A NEW CREATIVE HUB FOR JEDDAH In 2017, Art Jameel announced that construction had begun on a landmark development for Jeddah.

Conceived as a community hub, the 17,000 square metre development is specifically designed as a home for the creative industries, in the broadest sense. The Centre is set to bring together — and nurture — homegrown Saudi artistic and entrepreneurial talent, from contemporary artists to comedy stars, from leading young businesses to the most innovative of eateries.

Art Jameel commissioned Ibda Design to create a dynamic, contemporary building that encourages a cross-pollination of ideas between community partners and their audiences. The three-storey development features open internal courtyards surrounded by shaded terraces and walkways. Shared facilities include a Multi-purpose Theatre / Cinema and an Events Space, which are designed for a range of activities: from performances and exhibitions to community markets.

LOCATION The Centre is located in an upscale area in the north of Jeddah, between two main roads — the Prince Sultan and King Abdul Aziz­— in Al Mohamadeyah neighbourhood. The Centre is near residential buildings, shopping malls and restaurants, and is close to the new American consulate.

King Abdul Aziz International Airport is just 10 kilometers away, while Jeddah Corniche is 12 kilometers from the Centre. The location is convenient as it is easily accessible and is surrounded by many amenities.

ARCHITECTURE Ibda Design took on a brief to create a centre for creative innovation in Jeddah; the award-winning architects considered the design of the building in terms of internal openness, flexibility and connectivity.

The volume of the building is developed around a main Central Courtyard that acts as the heart of the

Centre as well as between people inside and outside the building.

On the upper levels, the Central Courtyard is surrounded by shaded staggered terraces that serve as an extension of the courtyard and as circulation routes leading to the facilities. The design of the exterior facade responds to the need to maintain privacy while allowing natural light to flood into interior spaces. The scale of the stepped volume relates in a friendly way to its context and provides a subtle perception of the building from the outside.

The construction of the Centre is managed by Abdul Latif Jameel Land. Following decades of experience developing and delivering Abdul Latif Jameel’s own corporate real estate projects, Abdul Latif Jameel’s real estate division was formed in 2012 in anticipation of the needs of Saudi Arabia’s rising population and growing urbanization. Today Abdul Latif Jameel Land has a property portfolio that extends across the MENAT region, Europe and Eastern Asia. Within the next five years, a further 150 projects are to be added to the portfolio, ranging from the refurbishment and construction of our own properties, to participating in

Art Jameel is working with like-minded cultural partners to ensure that the programme offered at the Centre is diverse, engaging, accessible and of world-class standard – as relevant and compelling for international visitors to Saudi Arabia as it is for local audiences. On any given day, audiences can experience around six different art exhibitions, both commercial and non-commercial; browse a farmers’ or crafts market in the Events Space; take in a poetry reading or comedy workshop; drink artisanal, fair trade coffee out in the Central Courtyard or inside in the Library; and invite colleagues and friends for a meal at the rooftop restaurant. The Multi-purpose Theatre / Cinema comes alive with performance, Theatre / Cinema, films, or comedy, as exhibitions and events continue into the evening. While audiences spill out into the Central Courtyard in winter, they are sheltered by enclosed, air-conditioned cafes and galleries in summer.

With digital studios / community learning centre and entrepreneurial workspaces dominating the second floor, the Centre has a local community of its own whose shared calendar of events runs throughout the days and evenings. The vibrant programme is set to make it a home-from-home for Jeddah’s creative community as well as the growing number of cultural tourists visiting Saudi Arabia.

COMMUNITY SPACES Art Jameel is joined by art galleries and businesses that have privileged access to the community spaces that have designed for maximum openness and flexibility.

At the heart of the hub, particularly in winter months, is the Central Courtyard, imagined both as a space for performances, films and events, a place for people to spill out from the cafe, Library, and Events Space. The Courtyard also links the Jameel Galleries and the Multi-purpose Theatre / Cinema - a highly flexible venue for performance at its most diverse.

The Events Space again is designed to be highly adaptable: farmers’ and crafts markets could be regular weekend fixtures — again drawing diverse crowds into the gallery and performance spaces — while the space is also equipped to take temporary art exhibitions and other more formal events.

In a more secluded spot on the top floor are four studios for in-residence artists and designers, plus a production facility and photographic dark room; the studio programme will be developed in consultation with our gallery partners – as will the reinforced, weight-bearing sculpture platform in the Central Courtyard.

‫صاالت عرض الفن والتصميم‬

The hub includes four art and design gallery spaces in a variety of sizes and positions, allowing for both emerging and established entities to join the development. The gallery spaces have been specifically designed with contemporary art in mind, particularly works being made by today’s Saudi artists. A basement loading bay and wide service lift correspond with large-scale access doors to each space; the larger galleries features double-height ceilings in one section for major works, coupled with more intimate spaces. Some are located within the body of the Centre, while others have direct street-facing windows.

Situating galleries within such a creative zone draws together like-minded arts enthusiasts and collectors, while the diversity of the other partners and businesses is likely to draw in a new audience for artists and their work.

IBDA DESIGN Ibda design is an international Architecture, Urban and Interior Design practice based in Dubai with collaboration offices in Beirut and Tokyo. The firm was founded in 2009 by Wael Al Awar, who moved back to the Middle East after spending several years in Tokyo, collaborating with renowned Japanese architects and designers on various scale projects in Japan and around the world. In 2012, Wael Al Awar was joined

by Kenichi Teramoto as a partner. Both Principal Architects / Designers had worked closely in Tokyo on several international projects.

Ibda design has a multi-disciplinary approach to design, addressing the social, environmental, economic and technological aspects of each project in order to tailor a highly specific concept to the given context.
