Seza Zitha - Chambers Of Life - Lino Reduction - 28.7cm x 25.3cm - 2019 - R 350.00 Incl. Vat - Edition of 2

Seza Zitha Biography 26 year old Seza Zitha was born in Katlehong. Zitha wanted to study graphic design but did not have the means to pursue this passion. He studied construction/engineering but dropped out and got a job to support his son. He found out about Artist Proof Studio from a friend who is also an artist and was studying at APS part-time. Zitha took part in the Strauss & Co ‘Irma Stern’ competition, where he won 5th prize. Zitha is interested in assisting students and teaching which he may do next year as an intern at Artist Proof Studio.

Statement My work is about myself. I think I lead a mysterious life. I am the cat. The cat has died and has 8 lives left. I portray each life with a different breed of cat. I lost everything in a fire when I was in second year and it was a wake-up call for me. It encouraged me to do more than I was doing. I use ‘scary’ cats to portray the strength that I currently have compared with my previous life, before the fire robbed me of everything I own. I am not dead. Cats usually scratch things to mark their territories. The marks found on my artwork represent the current lives which I have claimed.

Khosi Kunene Biography Khosi Kunene was born in Johannesburg, 1997. After attending Summit College (now known as Pinnacle College) in Fourways, she joined Artist Proof Studio where she is currently in her Third Year. In 2018 she took part in multiple large-scale projects; the Shift, Sustainable Development Goals, and Cartier. She had the opportunity of exhibiting with Cartier at the 2018 FNB Joburg Art Fair. Khosi’ printing talents lie in linocut, screenprint and drypoint.

Statement The image of the fly in my work is a symbol of my own existential fear of death and being forgotten. I have worked with the symbol of the fly as it is something that is always around death or decay. In my images, the aspects of the fly and human skeletal structures are fused, to form a hybrid - the living and the dead. The bones and the fly both communicate with each other as both being forgotten creatures that have now evolved to take on another form. I use famine or flesh like colours in my work which contrasts these forms. My process involves working with many layers and veils of colour and image. This conceptually adds meaning to the work as it involves a process of concealing and revealing. In many images I had to hide the ‘mistakes’ under the layers which revealed new forms and created depth in the work.

Reward Maleyana Biography Born in Mpumalanga, Nelspruit, Zachariah grew up in Johannesburg. In 2016 he was awarded a screen printing certificate for participating in a Skills Development Centre project held in Germiston (out of the box). He is currently completing his 3rd year at Artist Proof Studio. His biggest art influencer, he says ‘would have to be Van Gogh’, he can relate to both Van Gogh’s style and contrasting images. For Zachariah, art is a means of expressing his inner self and uncovering his story. Zachariah has been fortunate to exhibit a number of times, and was recently part of a group show at the UJ FADA gallery “Collaborations ‘, he has simultaneously exhibited at the Turbine Art Fair, the Legacy exhibition, and the Joburg Art Fair, 2019. With dreams of establishing himself one day as a top South African artist, he plans on developing his skillset of screenprinting, monotype, etching and linocut with an additional year at Artist Proof Studio in the Fourth Year Internship Programme.

Statement My body of work examines my identity as a young black male within my township and Johannesburg. My work is an exploration of my search for identity, looking at my family’s history of survival in my township. The different tools in my works are metaphors for my different family members in my household (including female members). For me, these simple tools are all different and need to perform specific functions together to repair the part that does not work. Each family member has a role to play and function to fulfill, to make a family work. In order for the house to be strong we need to work hand in hand as a family. I chose to arrange the tools in my compositions in a specific way in order to tell my story, and reflect my struggles within my family structure of emphasizing dominance and hierarchy. The worn out tools bear scars and marks which are harsh and rough, similar to my harsh experience and the reality of my current, scarred landscape. The medium of etching allows me to work with different tonal textures and marks which are similar to the worn out marks and scars on my tools.

Showing talent from a young age, (while representing his school) he was awarded a certificate of merit in Pencil and Oils at the All Africa Student Convention at the University of Free State (2011). In 2013, Lubisi enrolled at Fuba School of Dramatic and Visual Art, and exhibited a number of artworks at both the Grahamstown Art Festival (2014) and at the Jo Anke Art Gallery. His work has been featured on SABC 1’s promotional show Making Moves. His third Year work focuses on etching, and lithography. Lubisi’s talent extends through a multitude of mediums, from painting, photography, digital editing, drawing in a multitude of mediums; charcoal, watercolour, pencil, and ink. Lubisi’s enjoyed being part of the APS at Turbine Art Fair, where a number of his works were exhibited. Statement My work focuses on ‘beauty in struggle’. I am influenced by a many things, I draw my inspiration from African art, animation, architecture, design and photography. I have a passion for photography. Lubisi starts his art making process by photographing patterns, textures and marks, which he later transforms through editing to create new images. During the digital editing process, things can happen by chance to alter the image. My work is often abstract and resembles Rorschach’s inkblots. These are then translated into etchings and lithography’s and combinations of these print techniques.

Thabo Skosana Biography Born in the East Rand in 1996, Skhosana has always had a love for art particularly drawing from an early age. He was inspired by the animation and comic books that his father would give to him. He studied graphic design at Rosebank collage and subsequently joined the Artist Proof Studio 3 years ago. Skhosana has been part of a number of joint exhibitions with the Artist Proof Studio and Strauss & Co at Turbine Art Fair 2018/19, The Legacy exhibition 2019, as well as the recent Joburg Art Fair 2019. When Thabo isn’t printing artwork he is either busy with a beat, producing music with friends or working on his ongoing comic book series, that he would one day hopes to publish. Having learned many different printing mediums, he has focused on of linocut, etching and combination printing with colour monotypes.

Statement My work portrays the mob ‘justice’ attacks in my community on the East Rand in Johannesburg, where live, and in South Africa as whole. My style of drawing is influenced by animation, and graphic novel illustrations and their content (which is often violent). The graphic marks in my work emphasise the graphic content of my subject, the mob, in action. In my compositions I have exaggerated the scale and the arrangement of the people in the mob to dramatize the subject. In my works I capture individual characters of people in the mob that are from the community, or I leave out the facial features to place emphasis on the group mob mentality. In my work I have explored the different styles of drawing that express and convey violent behaviour that I see in my community.

Mummy Khumalo Biography Born in the Vaal Triangle, Khumalo was raised by her single mother, a domestic worker. Unable to afford a home, Khumalo’s childhood was filled with continual moving, and jumble of relatives and friends who would temporarily house them. Her constant companion and support during this time was art. After finishing high school, she was invited to attend art classes at Potchefstroom University. She learnt about Artist Proof Studio from a friend and is currently a third-year student here.

Statement My work is influenced by the many facets of my identity. I am an African, female, a mother, my skin condition Vitiligo and my spiritual beliefs that are intertwined with mother earth and my ancestors. I have created a series of portraits that bring together these different facets of my identity. The female figure in my work is a universal symbol of the African woman, a mother, grandmother - she is unclothed and walks a path of hardships inherited from our past and the burdens of our future. She is scared with and has marks on her body which resemble my skin condition Vitilgo. She looks straight at the viewer challenging conventions of female beauty, her breasts are empty from feeding families. She is alone, emphasizing the absence of fathers in our society. Often her gaze is confrontational, making the viewer acknowledge her role in our society, When I draw I use a range of artistic processes to generate work, I have been influenced by surrealism, drawing using my unconscious and memory, hence the distorted limbs and physical features in my works. The print medium of etching allows me to draw directly and freely on to the plate, allowing my unconscious to take control of the image.

Vuyisile Koahela Biography Vuyisile Koahela was born 1992 in Warden, South Africa. Six years later he moved to The Vaal Triangle where he still lives today. He spent most of his childhood drawing cartoons and his favourite pop stars of the time and eventually developed a love for art. In 2013 he went to study graphic designing, jewellery design, web design, sculpture and fine arts at the University of Free State for a year. Three years later in 2016, he enrolled at Artist Proof Studio to study printmaking and is currently completing his Third Year specialising in linocut and etching. He plans to enrol for his Fourth Year in 2020 to further his skills.

Statement Fascinated by the night sky, constellations and planets, it was only natural that Koahela believed that one day he would become an astronaut! Trading spaceships for inks, Kaohela examines the nature of duality and explores the complexity of polarities. His work is centered on the idea that duality exists and permeates through every aspect of reality. He says; “science tells us that matter and anti-matter are created equally and simultaneously in the universe, in fact, De Broglie states that all matter has a quantized particle/wave duality”. In order to build a sense of self-awareness (a consciousness of respect & mutual love to become better human beings) Koahela attempts to reconcile two opposing forces (masculine/feminine, good/evil, and positive/negative) into one entity. Ensuring that opposites are no longer seen as separate but interconnected and, therefore instrumental in the pursuit of self-awareness. He is constantly fascinated by the nature of the world, the repetitive turmoil and the violent chaos in which it unfolds. His inspiration is vast, ranging from; African masks, birds, reptiles, patterns, mirrors, duality, spirituality, sex, Afro-centricity, African literature and Eastern cultures. Having worked in both Linocut and Etching this year, his preference is the Linocut technique. As a published poet – his poems are currently available worldwide in two Anthology books. Art allows him true self-expression and freedom, and while he continues to strive for that ‘Freedom’ in art, he looks forward to his graduate exhibition at APS in November in JHB and December in CPT.

In 2015 he explored fashion and started making his own range of clothes. In 2016 he took further steps to improve in his skills and enrolled at the Artist Proof Studio. Motloung has exhibited prints with the Artist Proof Studio in collaboration with Strauss & Co at the 2019 /18 Turbine Art Fair, in 2019 he was awarded second prize from Strauss & Co for his outstanding print. Statement Motloung’s work weaves together a story of his past, his ancestors, beliefs and emotions. His prints are a physical representation of his dreams, visions and imagination where his ancestors come alive in their physical form. Using the print medium of etching, Motloung uses mezzotint to draw into the darkness of the aquatint, revealing a light to accentuate the shapes of his ancestors. Mongezi Gumede Biography Born in 1993 in Johannesburg, where he still lives, Gumede is currently studying printmaking in his graduate year at Artist Proof Studio. He has not only mastered the printmaking techniques of lino, etching, silk screening and mono type but is also a filmmaker and photographer. He was recently awarded the Ubuntu Student Award from Artist Proof Studio and has exhibited at the Joburg Art Fair and the Legacy exhibition, as well as at The Turbine Art Fair in both 2018 and 2019.

Statement My body of work is based on my daily commute by train from my home in the Vaal to the city of Johannesburg. I have taken a series of photographs and short films during my journey on the metro rail. My work is a personal documentation of the difficult movement and journey of commuters from one place to another. My work captures the over-crowded train, and the dangers working-class people face in their daily battle to travel to work on time. The train is always late and full and sometimes it never comes, leaving commuters stranded. I have layered photographic images in screenprint of workers crowded on top of one another, like you would find them crammed on the train. After all this time we still don’t have an adequate and safe public transport system. This daily exodus of the working-class people who have been displaced to remote township areas, cast off far way, is the legacy of apartheid and continues to effect the working-class people of our country.

Betinho Mokwane Biography Born in Soweto, Gauteng in 1995, Mokwane is currently completing his third year at the Artist Proof Studio. Mokwane is an active member of the APS student body and has been involved in numerous corporate commissions – translating the medium of printmaking into relief carved mural works with Special Projects at Artist Proof Studio. With an interest in combination printing which including; monotype, screenprinting, etching and linocut, Mokwane has extended his skillset into a range of designs that he silkscreens onto t-shirts as a sideline business. Mokwane has exhibited with the Artist Proof Studio in collaboration with Strauss & Co at the Turbine Art Fair (2018/19), the Legacy exhibition (2019) as well as at the recent Joburg Art Fair. He was awarded the Ubuntu Student Award this year from the Artist Proof Studio. He plans to enrol for a Fourth Year Internship programme at Artist Proof Studio in 2020.

Statement Mokwane’s work explores both ancient and contemporary forms of writing and drawing on walls. By juxtaposing ancient handmade symbols with contemporary graffiti markings, Mokwane has created a layered form of visual communication. Inspired by colour and texture, he builds on his artwork by scratching, writing and painting over existing ‘narratives’. His work reflects different time periods, with contrasting aesthetics between ancient and contemporary forms of recording information. Using ‘synthetic’ and natural colour, handmade marks, splatters and spray can markings he interweaves a complex tale of the urban landscapes of Johannesburg and Soweto. Just as early man left a visual record of his early life, he too makes a visual documentation of his current contemporary urban lifestyle as a young African male pulling references from the textures and marks of pavement corners, abandoned buildings, highways and bridges in Johannesburg and Soweto.

Simphiwe Dlamini Biography Simphiwe Dlamini was born and grew up in KwaZulu Natal. In 2010 she moved to Gauteng, where she fell in love with the visual arts, in particular art and drawing. In 2017 Simphiwe enrolled at the Artist Proof Studio in order to pursue her artistic dreams, which are quickly becoming a reality. In 2018 she exhibited at the Turbine Art Fair in a group show co-curated by Strauss & Co and the Artist Proof Studio - she was selected as one of the 4 finalists for outstanding work. During her 3 year programme, Simphiwe has mastered numerous print mediums, from etching, monotype and linocut. With hopes that one day her art will impact and change the world around her, Simphiwe plans to enroll for the 2020 Artist Proof Studio fourth year internship programme to further refine her skills.

Statement My work deals with my personal loss of a close friend. In my prints I tell this story using memory, metaphors, landscape and found materials. In my work the pigeon is a metaphor of my friend, she is a bird now and she visits me in an ideal dream-like landscape that I have created. The birds nest in my work is a symbol of my home, secure and safe, but in my prints the nest is unravelling and coming apart. When I lost her I felt like everything was falling apart. The medium of etching gives my story an atmospheric quality similar to my memories, some areas clear others faded ,areas that appear soft and dark .Together with the subtle tones, I have exaggerated the scale of the bird, nest, plants and flowers to recreated our relationship and friendship in my constructed dream-landscapes. I can create anything with my mind.

Tshegofatso Nkhumeleng Biography Better known as I.N.I and born in Soweto, Nkhumeleng currently in his 3rd year at Artist Proof Studio. He is drawn to watercolour, pen and collage and specializes in the printmaking techniques of lino, dry-point, etching, and colour monotype. While studying at APS, Nkhumeleng is also a voluntary teacher at St Martin High School, for the ROOM 13 Program (an international program that represents a growing network of student-run arts studios in schools and community settings worldwide). Nkhumeleng has so far held two successful exhibitions at ROOM 13 (2015 – 2016). He has also won a number of art awards for his poster designs, artwork and photography competitions.

Statement Nkhumeleng’s work focuses on what he calls the ‘Kasi Hustle’. A growing population paired with an increase in unemployment has meant that many people have turned to hustling in order to make ends meet. For Nkhumeleng, there is ‘good’ and ‘bad’ hustling - his body of work focuses on the good side. Drawing influence from his own township, where labour is the commodity of trade and employment opportunities are scarce – he has seen how his community has learnt to hustle for survival. Using rats as a metaphor – he draws a commonality between their scavenging nature to find food in the township waste, with the people that surround him who fight a daily struggle to merely survive – pushing themselves towards another day

Statement Shiviti is inspired by travel and movement, in particular, the movement of people and migration. Driven by life’s journey and lessons he’s learnt along the way, he feels ‘life is transport, you never really know where something will take you.’ Making comparisons between urban and rural areas, with a primary focus on public transport and landscapes and heavily populated vs. less populated areas, he expresses a perspective of where we see ourselves in society today. Alex Molokoane Biography Born in 1995 in the North-West Province, Molokoane moved to Johannesburg in 2014 to pursue a career in the visual arts. He initially enrolled at the Artist Proof Studio only part-time, attending the Saturday classes, but subsequently joined the full-time programme in 2017. His interests lie in merging traditional printmaking art with a digital medium. During his three years, Alex has mastered monotype, silk screening, etching and lino, as well as developing a wide range of digital skills which he has successfully implemented into his artwork. Alex was part of the Nirox Conversations in 2016, he exhibited with APS in collaboration with Strauss & Co at the 2018/19 Turbine Art Fair, as well as the Legacy Exhibition and the Johannesburg Art Fair. He recently received the Ubuntu Student Award for his 3rdyear student work.Alex is looking forward to his graduate exhibition and plans to enroll in APS fourth year internship programme to further develop his skillset.

Statement The title of my Third Year body of work is ‘window to a dream verse’. The concept behind the title focuses on a parallel world I have created that mirrors downtown Johannesburg. Within this parallel world aspects of fantasy, surrealism and realism can be found. The style of drawing/illustration in my work is also influenced by Japanese animation known as Anime. The combination of all these influences is my attempt to create an Afro-futuristic fantasy. Within this fantasy world I have created a character which I consider a doppelganger. This character is a hybrid between human and butterfly. He has the ability to move between the two worlds. The butterfly in my works is a ‘Cosmic Morpho’ of my own creation and is inspired by the Blue Morpho butterfly and moth. The fragility and femininity of the butterfly in the urban JHB landscape brings an organic element that contrasts the man-made landscape. I want my work to give the viewer a glimpse into this parallel world and universe I long for, where I am able to lose my identity as an African saturated in sweet synthetic colours and morph into something outside of the social constructs I find myself in. I get to exist within my own realty where I feel empowered to create active social change.
