IDENTITY an artistic noise exhibition I june 2018

mission and purpose

Artistic Noise exists to bring the freedom and power of artistic practice to young people who are incarcerated, on probation, or otherwise involved in the justice system.

Through visual arts and entrepreneurship programs in Massachusetts and New York, our participants give voice to their experiences, build community through collaborative projects, and learn valuable life and job skills. Artistic Noise creates safe spaces where court-involved youth can be seen, heard and supported on their path to adulthood. We believe the practice of making art offers opportunities for young people and communities to transform.

Curatorial statement Artistic Noise is an inclusive environment that encourages positivity and exploration. We make art that is a reflection of ourselves and shows our unique perspectives. Through our partnerships and projects, we unify diverse people using creativity. Our artwork is meant to challenge misconceptions and educate the viewer on social affairs. “Identity” presents the voices of our individual youth to create an extraordinary collective.

Youth selected text, images, colors, shapes, and line to create a narrative images that describe something about who they are and how that can be portrayed as message to the public. Imagery was carefully selected and layered and from the process of giving form to personally relevant content, the youth shared the deeper emotional aspects of their experiences.

Every Straight Crooked Path Teaching Artist Sophia Dawson and Art Therapist Francesca DeBiaso collaborative project How do you know if you are on the right path? Youth looked through a number of scriptural texts that focus on the path on which one walks and selected and collaged text that was meaningful to them. The group worked collaboratively to adhere the text and paint a pair of sneakers seen from behind.

superpower

Teaching Artist Sophia Dawson collaborative project If you had a superpower what would it be? Would you use it for good or for evil? The youths’ responses ranged from teleportation, invisibility, mind-reading to other creative, original superpowers.

One superhero has the power to control minds. He awaits his trial before the judge and plans to shift the judges mind to cause the judge to favor him. In another painting, we find “Mr. Rights”. A superhero that has the power to sense when an immigrant is facing charges and deportation because he hasn’t obtained the necessary documents to stay in the United States. Breaking out of his sleep he rushes to the rescue. King Kong was inspired by one youth who related to the character. He is seen as a monster by society but in reality is a loving creature who incredibly misunderstood.

This project was a multimedia exploration themed around shared characteristics between man and creature. Participants selected text and imagery reflective of these traits which included wisdom, aggression, vulnerability and mischief.

Sepia Collage Project Art Therapist Francesca DeBiaso This project sprung from a place of needing to process change, in its many forms. The youth had just changed housing units into one that felt far less contained and familiar.

Outside the jail walls, the hot sticky summer was changing into a cloudy fall, simply reminding many of the youth that they still had another season to go before they would be released. For this project, they were presented with the prompt: Think of a time that you went through a major change.

Conceal/Reveal Teaching Artist Rachel Granofsky and Art Therapist Francesca DeBiaso Altered portraits

Participants were excited to share their Facebook profile photos in the Rikers environment where individuals are identified by nicknames and numbers. Mostly interested in evaluating each other based on clothing labels and poses, participants were challenged to color their self portraits to convey an emotional representation of themselves. Using color pencils, markers, puffy paint and glitter, participants were asked to conceal their identity in the process of representing an emotion. Marked by happiness, excitement, anxiety, sadness, anger and fear participants transformed their appearance to express a range of colorful feelings.

Drawing from references of heraldry, emblem books, and medieval nation imagery, participants collaged crests to represent their distinctive interests and aspirations. Recombining imagery emblematic of bravery, labor and freedom, participants illustrated symbols of individual strength and communal humility. These badges reflect personal integrity and the morality that individuals choose to govern their lives.

Revolving around a conversation concerning how incarceration affects one’s perception of time, participants designed their own clocks. Most agreed that time moves twice as slow at Rikers. While using their time to reflect on the past, the anxiety of uncertain futures impeded participants ability to be fully focused throughout workshops.

Some participants chose to illustrate the activities which divide their daily routine at Rikers, while others colored mandala patterns in an effort to calm the mind. The bicycle wheel is a symbol of free time: spinning fast and travelling forward with friends while in control of the wheel.

This workshop gave participants the opportunity to stage a immersive landscape for their tiny twodimensional cut-out. Participants experimented with a variety of materials to compose a diorama environment. Similar to an “Alice In Wonderland” metaphor for growing up, participants played with scale and perspective in search of positioning themselves in relation to the camera lens.

image me Teaching Artists ebony walcott and julie novello art therapist francesca debiaso The Image Me project provided a conceptual foundation and framework for participants to explore and discuss their future. Youth artists developed imagery by visualizing achieving future goals. The result is a mixture of styles, compositions, and imagery that examine the individuality of our participants. Students thought about where they would like to see themselves financially, physically, and emotionally in the next 5 years and used these words/statements to create vision boards.

Each young man in probations SWAG program who participated in this activity walked away with a sense of the direction they want to take their life. These vision boards were displayed at probations SWAG ceremony the young men from all 5 boros came together for a celebration of their future selves.

We worked together to design a hoodie that represents our shared story. The spray can represents art and Artistic Noise giving us the tools to redesign our futures and our communities. The mirror is held up to represent selfreflection, but when we look in the mirror we see ourselves as the community. The tree represents our roots, while the branches of the tree turn into roads which represent the different paths we choose to take. Behind the tree is Boston, our home. The lyrics speak to our stories, our challenges and our communities pulling us through.

Ubuntu means “I am because you are”. It is about how one person cannot live independently of their community. Ubuntu has us think about the impact we have on our communities and how they also influence who we are. We realized that there is a common thread weaving us all together so we made this piece by crocheting yarn. The interlocking loops of yarn represent all of us and our connections to one another.

The center piece is a rainbow that represents the idea of Ubuntu. All its colors represent all the people and their differences and how beautiful diversity is. The triangles that surround the Ubuntu rainbow symbolize the words that represent what we want for ourselves and our neighbors. We chose the colors that we felt best matched those words and crochet the triangles. The colors of the triangles are part of the rainbow the way we feel that these words represent elements that are very important to Ubuntu. “The Cards You’re Dealt” is an eight by five foot painting, separated across four panels. The quadtych represents the uncontrollable aspects of our human existence and how we choose to live given those circumstances. The first three panels portray how we do not have the choice to pick our race or ethnic background, the socioeconomic status we are born into and how that affects our climb to the top, or many of the fortunate and unfortunate events that happen to us throughout our life. The last panel asks us to consider how we grow and develop as people in response to our circumstances and to also consider the circumstances of others.

The last panel is for reflection. You will find a rap composed by Takari which speaks to some of the harshness in the world and encourages us to appreciate what we have and keep pushing until the end.

This is an interactive art piece that requests everyone’s participation. The artists encouraged you to take a gamble at each panel, think about the cards you’ve been dealt, and then share your thoughts with us on the last reflection panel by writing your response directly below Takari’s lyrics.

This piece represents the understanding of Ubuntu as we should show love, care and understanding for one another because we do not get to choose the life we have, but are still responsible for the person we become.

sva - good art: bad city collaborative project between the school of visual arts department of art therapy graduate program, the public and a & e students.

During the Fall semester of of 2017, Artistic Noise partnered with the Art Therapy Department at the School of Visual Arts. During this partnership, A&E participants met with graduate students to design and paint murals in one of the art therapy classrooms. This programming evolved into a collaborative relationship between A&E participants and SVA graduate students, sharing stories and experiences in an artistic environment. A&E participants also led a workshop for youth from the Cooke School and Institute at SVA centered around the A&E murals. The partnership culminated in a one-night event of art making an opening reception for the exhibition, Good Art: Bad City.

identity politics teaching artist nic holiber In this project, participants began by brainstorming what exactly “mainstream America” means and looked closely through the lenses of the media, government, police, and society to determine how young people of color are represented today. Accompanying this, Artistic Noise participants were asked to consider and brainstorm what they think is a more accurate representation of themselves. This resulted in words and ideas that came to represent their true identity.

Each youth artist created two panels based on our discussions; one examining the ways in which young people of color are represented in “mainstream” America and the other showing how the young people of Artistic Noise represent what they feel is their true identity.

This project was inspired by the work of Toyin Ojih Odutola, who’s portraits and large scale drawings explore the complexity and malleability of identity. Through Artistic Noise’s partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art, our A&E participants were given a guided tour and studio workshop of Odutola’s solo exhibition, To Wander Determined.

bishop This piece is pretty self explanatory. It goes very deep into African Americans role in the history of America. It also has a lot to do with how we’re portrayed in the media. My main objective with this piece was to purposely guide the viewer out of their comfort zone, daring them to exceed the limitations of what is appropriate in contemporary art, all while exposing the corrupt system that I almost fell victim to. My goal is to inspire creativity in someone else. This is without a doubt my personal favorite. I am very proud of how it turned out. I tried to really let go and experiment with this one. I took my time and really felt the brush strokes and let the picture paint itself. The boy in the hole is me, another metaphor for me being an underrated underground artist.

The name on the song is George Stinney, who was a African American boy wrongfully convicted of murder and executed in 1994. The rose is also a metaphor for Tupac Shakur. It has a lot to do with the harsh environment I was forced to overcome. The shadow like figure in the right corner represents the modern day black man, no future, no past, no identity, just infinite emptiness.

eli In my piece, I tried to incorporate many segments in order for you to get a complete understanding of what I’m stating by creating this piece in the first place. The people in the fire and jumping of the cliff are followers. One person follows the other into a “Stupid Decision”.

I’m saying that Mainstream America Views Us/Me as Followers or a Follower”. The angel on the left is in distress because he doesn’t enjoy the sight of his people killing themselves.

Mainstream America makes us/me ashamed of ourselves/myself. The lady on the cliff represents an unauthentic personality Mainstream America projects on us or forces us to adopt in order to be accepted into society.

There is a dark man standing on the cliff with the lady. He is not a follower. He is a leader who has gotten to the top and is now looking at the angel and followers. He is a person who has created his own path even though there is no path to the top in the painting. This is basically stating that anything and everything is possible even if you can’t see it. There is also a sign in the lower right cliff which is the Egyptian symbol for “Life”. I see myself as someone who is a part of the world like everything else on this earth. I always remember my mistakes and go over the lessons I have learned. Each mistake that I’ve made in my past taught me something I could correct in my future in order to live in the present without any regrets.

angel My piece is about mainstream America and how people view me in society, I chose to do this piece because there are a lot of people that experienced racism. I remember when I used to live in Staten Island I went through people not liking me because of my complexation. They viewed me as a bad person. I specifically choose this because this is something that I went through when I was younger. I put this African American man in the middle because somehow we are always the target and get locked up for something that’s very petty. Some people look at people of color as bad people and always judging us, everybody is not perfect and it does not matter what race you are. I chose to paint a lion because this animal is something that represents me. The lion represents me because I am a Leo. We are just chilled until someone get us out of character, but besides that, they are chill, laid back, and fun. That’s all me.

community teaching artist nic holiber This project began by brainstorming what “community” meant to each participant and all the different types of communities they could identify. Questions were raised such as, is community fluid?

Inclusive/exclusive? Permanent or temporary?

Next, the participants looked at the work of contemporary artists Abigail Deville and Rashid Johnson, whose work involves mixed media materials and construction, as well as sculptor Louise Nevelson. All three of these artists live(d) in New York City and cite the urban environment as a major influence in their work.

The artwork the participants created was about one specific community they belong to or had belonged to during their lifetime. They were given free range of materials and styles to complete their vision, resulting in a truly personal account of their experiences.

eli Golden Dream This project was centered around choosing a community I belong to and illustrating my experience with in that community.

The “Golden Dream” is about the feeling of being trapped in my community.

The gold on the outer portion of my piece represents wealth and the three strips of white represents bars specifically jail cell bars that keeps me shackled in like a bird whose wings got completely cut off.

Notice how the wealth is connecting to the inner portion of my piece(me) but yet it is still unreachable because it resides on the outer portion of the piece.

The inner portion of the piece represents the real me. The clouds represent the thoughts that we all have in the vast, mysterious and beautiful space we call our minds. The two planets (Sanity and Insanity) in which one has to balance in order to succeed in our modern society has a prayer that helps any and all deal with the life we had no choice of receiving. We have free will as said, but we never had the free will to choose whether or not to be born.

bishop This piece is about the stereotypes I was faced with growing up in New York. I put his head in the clouds because one of the stereotypes I noticed was that black people are not focused and have and have low attention span. But I put his head in the clouds for a different reason; to show that his mind is free and busy thinking of a master plan. The idea for the frame came from another stereotype that black people like watermelon but I don’t usually eat fruits at all.

The individual displayed in the frame is a self-portrait that that I think pretty much raps up who I am as a person. A stereotype, a thug, a bastard, I am all these things in one.

Looking from a more advanced point of view I’m just a victim of society nothing more nothing less.

I decided to make work about the Apollo because I’m from Harlem and when people come to here, it’s the first thing they want to see. The Apollo means a lot to me because every day I walk past and see a happy crowd and tourists looking at new things and that’s what I love about Harlem.

tenth intervention teaching artist nic holiber Tenth Intervention was founded in 2012 by violinist Hajnal Pivnick and composer/pianist Dorian Wallace, the group formed with the purpose of creating new work in a highly collaborative environment. Together with composers, musicians, visual artists, choreographers, and dancers, Tenth Intervention has produced programs that expand the reach of music to be community focused, diverse, and pioneering.

In the Fall/Winter of 2017, Tenth Intervention led a series of music and art making workshops art Artistic Noise. During these sessions, participants listened to live music and created artwork in reaction to what they heard. The music ranged from classical, to experimental and carried with it themes of protest, revolution, and emotion.

Artistic Noise presented their artwork as part of Tenth Intervention concert series, It Can’t Happen Here: art in response to oppression, on January 20, 2018.

curator bios Angel Angel Valerio is in the 12th grade, he is currently graduating at Grand Street Campus in June and his favorite subjects are Forensic and History. Angel’s role at Artistic Noise is a curator and artist, he has been at Artistic Noise for 4 years. Angel likes to work because ever since he started working he has been in less trouble. His best feeling when he is at Artistic Noise is painting and going to galleries. When Angel had his first exhibit he was surprised that people actually liked his work and bought his pieces and it boosted his confidence as an artist.

bishop Bishop has been drawing ever since he was able to hold a pencil. No matter what he was faced with in his past, he never put it down and in return it’s never let him down. By embracing this ability his life has slowly but surely started to transition from a negative to a positive. He is a firm believer in no matter how slow you go, if you never stop you will eventually reach your destination. During his time at Artistic Noise he’s had the opportunity to sell out two art exhibitions, illustrated the cover of a college textbook, and also became the apprentice of a very talented artist.

eli Sadiq Armuni Elijah Slade aka – ELI, though very quiet and mysterious, he is a smart, creative and inspirational individual who sees positivity in the most negative environments. His creative and accurate descriptions through music and artwork of the hardships he has noticed in his community are well organized, very descriptive, ground –braking and enlightening. He is a multi-tasker, currently working two jobs in New Rochelle and Harlem NY while simultaneously attending college in White Plains NY. He is a hard worker with a goal of becoming a business manager who is in charge of his music and artwork that “will most definitely be accomplished”.

sam Born in East Harlem in the year 1999, Sam has lived throughout NYC but currently resides in the Bronx. She has been a participant of Artistic Noise for a year and six months. She continues to flourish as an artist day by day, but also has a love for music and goes by the stage name “Baeinse”.

vanessa ruiz - executive director, boston

Curtis Young is an advocate of youth education programs focusing on art and opportunity expansion.

He joins Artistic Noise after more than 10 years working in education at high impact organizations including the International Education Resource Network, where he managed U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs grant programs in five countries and most recently the Ross Institute, whose mission is to transform education and prepare children with the skills, knowledge, and values to succeed in a complex, global society. His dedication to service began while an undergraduate student when he was awarded the prestigious White House Internship under the administration of former President William J. Clinton. While at the White House he worked under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall Jr. in the Cabinet Affairs Office. Curtis continued his work in government in the Office of Congressman Bobby Scott, and as a Legislative Aide to Delegate Mamye BaCote in the Virginia House of Delegates in addition to the Presidential Campaign of Former Secretary of State, John Kerry. It was the culmination of these experiences which provided the foundation and interest in working locally to bring about change.

Vanessa, better known as Nessie Ruiz, received a BFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design, including global and liberal arts studies through Semester at Sea, and a MFA in Visual Arts from the University of Chicago.

Nessie's photographic work revolves around social issues affecting marginalized populations, both locally and abroad.

Since 2010 she has been an adjunct faculty member at several colleges including Montserrat College of Art and Community College of Rhode Island, where she teaches photography and visual arts courses. She has also taught continuing education classes at RISD and the University of Miami.

minotte romulus - assistant director, boston

Ebony is an artist, mentor, and youth advocate from Brooklyn. She is an alumni of the Institute of Transformative Mentoring at The New School. She has led Artistic Noise groups held at probation in all 5 boroughs. She has also led and taught workshops for Artistic Noise in Washington, D.C. at The Crittenton Foundations In Solidarity We Rise seminar and The Healing Justice Summit held at Columbia's School of Social Work and organized by H.O.L.L.A Ebony has spoken on panels at NYU, John Jay, and Hunter. She is using her time at Artistic Noise to not only build upon her skills as an artist but also to learn the ins and outs of running a non-profit. She hopes to use everything she is learning here to spread awareness about life after lockup to the people who don't understand. She is currently working on a project with Boston college and Fran Sherman called I Am Why centered on the lived experiences of young women who have emerged from juvenile justice and its related systems.

Minotte Romulus is an artist, mentor and educator who has collaborated with John Ewing on several large-scale public art projects. She has taught for St. Stephen's Be Safe Program and led projects for Artistic Noise in both New York and Boston.

Minotte has spoken at Boston's Cyclorama, The Boston State House, The Cloud Foundation, Columbia University, The Massachusetts College of Art and most recently at The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's Annual Conference in Washington DC. Minotte worked with Artistic Noise while she involved with the justice system as a young woman. Now over 10 years later she is the Assistant Director teaching art workshops in the very facility where she was incarcerated. As a former Artistic Noise participant she offers the young people she works with hope that they can succeed, follow their dreams and that anything is possible.

Nessie is uniquely suited to lead Artistic Noise because of her own background. She herself grew up in a low-income Latin family with a history of incarceration. As a teen she created a leadership project for girls in her community, and successfully secured a grant to fund it. Since then, she has been passionately involved with youth-focused non-profits in the US, Sri Lanka, and South Africa where she has helped to create and implement positive youth development programs for young children and teens. She believes wholeheartedly that art has the power to transform lives. She has two ongoing missions in life: to bring art to underprivileged youth, and to meet Dolly Parton (now for the fourth time).

staff bios francesca debiaso - program director of residential placement, ny Francesca DeBiaso is an art therapist living in Brooklyn, New York. She received her BA in Art History (2012) from Gettysburg College where she focused her studies on feminist art of the 1970s. Her interest in the intersection of mental health and creative expression led her to pursue an MPS in Art Therapy at the School of Visual Arts (2017). During her first year of graduate school, Francesca interned with Artistic Noise which solidified for her the connection between art therapy and social justice. She was hired on after the internship ended and was the Program Coordinator for C.A.S.E.S.'s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and planned a curriculum that focused on personal, professional and artistic development. She then interned at MercyFirst, a residential treatment center for adolescents located in Syosset, Long Island where she deepened her understanding of clinical assessment and trauma-informed art therapy.

Francesca is excited to be apart of the team at Artistic Noise and is grateful to support these young people on their journey.

rachel granofsky - teaching artist, ny Rachel Granofsky (b. 1980, Montreal, Canada) graduated from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, with an MFA in 2013. She received her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute, New York, in 2003.

Her current body of photographs combine tropes of trompe l‘oeil painting with sculptural interventions to satirize the imagery and language of real estate listings in New York. She has exhibited in group shows in South Africa, Germany, Sweden, Canada, the U.S.A. and Brazil, and was awarded artist residencies at Lighthouse Works (2018), Ox-Bow (2017), Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2015) and Greatmore Studios, South Africa (2011). Rachel currently participates in the Drawing Center’s ‘Open Sessions’ program (2018-2020) in New York City. She also facilitates art workshops with Artistic Noise for incarcerated youth on Rikers Island.

nic holiber - art, entrepreneurship & curatorial program director, ny Nicolas is a Brooklyn based artist and educator who paints, sculpts, and creates public artwork. Completing his MFA at the New York Academy of Art in 2012, he was awarded a Postgraduate Fellowship the following year. Holiber's art is characterized by its unique use of materials and vivid use of color, creating multidimensional works that combine painting, drawing, and sculpture. Recent projects and awards include public commissions for the NYC Parks Department, Bloomfield College (NJ), and LMCC's Process Space Residency Program on Governors Island. Since 2007, he has worked in a diverse range of educational settings. Nicolas is passionate about his work at Artistic Noise and remains committed to empowering youth through the visual arts.

sophia dawson - artist in residence, ny Sophia Dawson is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, New York.

She attended the School of Visual Arts and obtained a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts in 2010. She recently graduated New York University with her Masters in Visual Arts Administration. Sophia's personal practice aims to educate people on recent history and collective and individual struggles through her art. She has worked as both a teaching artist and muralist on a number of projects throughout New York City.

julie novello - teaching artist, ny Julie is a youth advocate, artist, and writer, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She currently works at Friends of Island Academy as a mitigation specialist - representing justiceinvolved youth in court. Previously she taught middle school Science and completed Teach For America. She completed her BFA in 2013 at SUNY Purchase, where she was also the commencement speaker. Julie makes pictures and writes when she isn’t working and will be starting an MFA program at Hartford University this Summer. She is excited to share the artwork from the ECHOES team.

paul singleton - teaching artist, ny Art Therapist Paul Singleton III likes to focus on healing by incorporating mindfulness techniques into Creative Arts Therapy. He first began working with court-involved youth as an Art Therapy Intern at CASES in 2009, and joined Artistic Noise in Fall 2013. Drawing on years of clinical experience and classroom teaching experience, for Paul art is a way to break down barriers. In addition to being a Licensed (LCAT) and registered Art Therapist (ATR), Paul is also a published poet, author, and illustrator.
