As we end another year here at Creative Quarterly we’re reminded of just how far we’ve come. Forty-four issues and counting. And in a market that is dwindling for print publications we’ve managed to survive and thrive.

We continue to receive accolades for our work and we continue to be excited about the future, challenging as it may be.

What we’ve found is that where once there was a spike in interest for digital publications that has subsided and now the interest among creative audiences is to touch and flip through an actual printed copy.

As an aside, we find one test for a designer is how they approach a printed piece. True designers lift the page to their nose and take a whiff, then put the page between their thumb and forefinger to feel the weight. And most view the piece back to front whereas non-designers look front to back.

It’s not to say that digital magazines don’t have their place. It’s certainly easier to forward an article to a friend, digital indeed saves trees and for weighty magazines viewing on a tablet is less cumbersome.

But recent studies show that people by and large still prefer print over digital. We just took a look at a study from August* that showed the readership of print versus digital was quite extreme: 60% had not read a digital magazine. Whereas 40% had read one or two print publications; another 35% had read three or more.

And when it comes to print subscriptions, 32% subscribe to one to two publications, 25% to three or more. Digital? Not so much, 77% don’t subscribe to digital publications at all.

Studies also show that we retain knowledge and experiences better through physical interaction i.e., thumbing through pages, writing notes, highlighting passages, dog-earring pages. The principal advantage of digital is again the ability to share content.

When it comes to viewing digital content a study found 48% of Americans own a tablet, where only 26% of those do in the United Kingdom.† Smart phones are also used but the experience is diminished by size of the screen and content style changes.

A common complaint with digital publications is that you can’t find something a year from now. And then there are the computer crashes, increased storage space and even the fact that publishers can track your activities online. These inconveniences have led more and more back to print.

The upside to these surveys is that many readers actually prefer a combination of print and digital. Print to read, digital to access and forward information. That’s why we’re introducing our new subscription package, you can now order your print subscription and get the digital content free.
