Introduction Since the early 2nd Century CE, when it was invented in China, paper has become an integral part of our lives. The countless uses of it hardly require mentioning. Paper as an artistic medium is a subject of this exhibition. Be it a watercolor, pencil, acrylic, oil, ink, collage, or photographic image, there are many ways for an artistic expression using this versatile material. While paper is indeed ubiquitous, it presents unique challenges for the artists. It is well associated with immediacy, experimentation, and natural ability. As a medium paper brings together the uncanny gift of catching ineffable in the visual world with a concrete expression of drawing skill. And paper is as fragile as the fleeting subject matter of the drawing itself. Artios Gallery is proud to present works on paper of the 20 artists carefully selected for their creative spirit and masterful expression. We hope you will enjoy this collection.

Vitaliy Gonikman Vitaliy is an Ukrainian-born artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Although not formally trained in art Vitaliy loved drawing and painting as long as he could remember. As a child, he attended an art studio for 5 years in his native Odessa where he gained basic skills of handling various mediums and working with different materials. He participated in numerous art competitions and one of his early ceramic works has won the 1st Prize at the children’s international art completion in Paris, France, in 1973. His love for creating art did not stop even though his professional career took a very different path. Vitaliy received a medical degree and worked as a physician assistant in the emergency medical service in Odessa. Later, after emigrating to New York in 1991, he received an MS in Physical Therapy from Mercy College, NY. Throughout these years, Vitaliy continued to draw, paint and produce photographs. His drawings appeared in a popular Russian language newspaper Courier, published in Brooklyn. In 2014 the artist collaborated with Anna Krayn, a prominent psychologist and author of several children’s books. One of the books he illustrated "Metropolitan Museum and its Magic Stories", has won the Quality Excellence Design Award (QED). Vitaliy mainly works in ink and pen, but would gladly work with oil, watercolor, and pencil. His native city of Odessa, Ukraine, was an early inspiration for his black and white cityscape drawings. Says artist, “Throughout my life, I was trying to establish my own style, the style that will express my inner world and artistic preferences. When I started to create surrealistic black and white drawings I felt 'this is it'.....I have found it, and I named my style "Conceptual Surrealism". My main intent is to embed a deep meaning in each image but leave plenty of room for the viewer's imagination”. Vitaliy participated in numerous group exhibitions and competitions, most notably, at Greenpoint Gallery, Brooklyn, and Museum of Russian Art, NY. Two of his works were selected for the International Art Festival in New York in 2013 and were exhibited at the 25CPW gallery in Manhattan. Danny Glass "I create figurative paintings whose subjects are based on real people I have observed in my life. I believe that the most vivid and meaningful interactions of figures, space and light occur out in the world and I seek those moments by going where I go and gathering images. In addition to sketching live at the scene, the current state and accessibility of photograph technology allow me to gather a vast collection of reference material to aid my memory of any given space. I utilize classical and digital techniques to arrive at a final composition which serves as my guide in creating a painting. Through my figurative paintings, I hope to communicate the specific and unique emotions of those people I observe. My guiding criterion for choosing which scenes to paint is how well it expresses the thought I wanted to express through the painting. Many times the thought is a reflection on the emotions I read in the people around me in specific spaces. Another criterion is how well the scene allows me to explore space and light to create a complex scene full of lively figures. Ultimately, only the painting shows the moment that grabbed my attention. My painting process involves repetitious and preparative draftsmanship juxtaposed with spontaneous and succinct decisions and expression. My painting choices are informed by a variety of painting movements. This way of working speaks to my understanding of memory. It can be both through repetitive exposure and a spontaneous epiphany that memories come to us and in all cases that memory is its own new altered creature that is removed from any reality that exists beyond consciousness. Without the act of painting and engaging visually with the people I see in my life, I may have forgotten the experiences entirely. In giving these experiences visual form, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve endowed the moments and people with a type of significance. In an age where countless images are available at a single touch, committing any particular image to memory more daunting but ultimately more exciting than ever". Born in 1991, Danny Glass was raised in Hollywood, Florida. Danny graduated from the Brown/RISD Dual Degree Program where he studied Art History and Painting respectively. Danny recently received a Masters in Art Business from the Sothebyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Institute of Art in NY. Eleonora Hobbs / EllaNiza Eleonora Hobbs (EllaNiza) is an artist with an exceptional feeling for a rich saturated palette. Her artwork represents the world as she perceives it: vivid, magnificent and breathtaking. The variety of details in each of her painting fills the entire composition. Her abstract works are based on a perception of color, and bring the sensation of life to each of them. Born in the former Soviet Union, she has a degree in architecture from the Tashkent State Polytechnic University (Uzbekistan), where for 5 consecutive years EllaNiza studied the history of art, composition, professional drawing, pastel, washing with Chinese ink, and watercolors as a major part of that program. She moved to the USA in 1996 and has been working in oil and acrylic since 2001. In 2012 she attended the Art Academy in Miami under the supervision of Jaque Harwey. She exhibited in Miami, Miami Beach, and NY. EllaNiza has participated in the 26th and 27th Chelsea International Fine Art Competitions (2011-2012) that were organized by the Agora Gallery of New York, the Miami Red Dot - Miami SOLO International Art Fair (2011), the Jerry's Artarama Self Portrait Contest (2013), the Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition (2018), and the Contemporary Art Exhibition (2019), presented by Margo Gallery in NYC and Jersey City. EllaNiza says: "I've been passionate about art all my life. I was in New York City on 9/11. Those tragic events gave me a strong impetus to start painting. I used to consider myself a graphic artist, with my love of light pale aquarelle hues, monotone gray-white-black tones, and straight lines. Later on, when I tried some new techniques using oil and acrylic, I discovered an amazing world of vivid and bright colors, which gave me a vast range of new possibilities. From precise straight lines to free impulsive strokes and texture - this is my evolution as an artist. I am a positive dreamer and an optimistic human being. In our days of high technology, of fast impetuous life, sometimes there is no time for a brief respite, for a glance around us, for a look into oneself. People are callous to our environment, and a lot of time just indifferent. Va s i l y K a f a n o v Vasily Kafanov is a Russian-American artist, born and raised in Moscow, Russia. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Art, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the country, and started his career as an illustrator. In this capacity, Vasily has produced drawings for over 20 children’s books. When he emigrated to the US in 1990, he contributed his works to the New York Times and illustrated a cover for the rock band The Smashing Pumpkins’ 2000 album entitled "MACHINA: The Machine of Gods." The artist also illustrated covers of all the full-length albums for the Philadelphia rock band MeWithoutYou. Throughout his career, Vasily has worked in many different mediums and styles. His paintings are inspired by such prominent artists as Pablo Picasso, Mikhail Shemyakin, Giorgio Morandi and Marc Chagall, whom Vasily knew personally. The great master was not only an inspiration but a mentor for the young artist. Over the years, Vasily’s style has notably evolved but to this day his works pay an homage to Chagall’s heritage in their fairytale themes and propensity to be symbolic and surreal. The artist has developed his own unique method of creating works, using mixed media to produce incredibly detailed, precise, and complex paintings. He starts by applying oil and then adds acrylic for texture and Japanese ink for detail. The final product lets the viewer peek into the artist’s vivid imagination masterfully realized on canvas or paper. Vasily has exhibited extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Asia and has been represented by several galleries, including solo shows at Art 54 Gallery, Grant Gallery, and Broom Street Gallery, among others. His works are held in numerous private collections and museums around the world.

I g o r S t a s o v s k i y / S TA I G O Igor Stasovskiy (STAIGO) is an artist of Ukrainian origin, who spent most of his adult life in Russia and now lives and works in New York. He holds an undergraduate degree in conducting and orchestral management from the St. Petersburg Culture Institute in Russia. Igor currently writes music and songs for his solo musical project "STAIGO", which he performs in New York clubs and at music festivals. He also plays in the band "Patzany" ("Boys" in English) that performs throughout the metropolitan area. Igor attributes his love for art and drawing to two mentors. The first one was Tatiana Zhukova, a professional artist who taught Igor the basics of drawing, painting, and color mixing at the local art studio for kids. He returned to the studio to become her teaching assistant upon graduating from college. Later, Igor met Genadiy Nazarov, a well known Ukrainian caricaturist, who became another teacher to the young artist. For several years they collaborated on various projects, from advertising to stage design for theatrical productions. It was Nazarov who taught Igor how to pay attention to every detail in producing graphics and caricature. The artist began participating in local exhibitions and art competitions. In 1992 his works were printed in the Italian catalog for caricatures. Even though Igor’s main activity remains in the music field, he is constantly engaged in producing artworks. He enjoys working with all kinds of media and materials including oil, acrylic, ink, and mixed media. For the Works on Paper exhibition, the artist presents three works from a series of five created in 2015, titled “Forms around us”. Igor says of his works: “I wanted to reveal the harmony of the surrounding human world, consisting of simple and perfect geometric forms that are present in our daily life.”

Elena Iosilevich "Creativity is the way to tell a story and evoke my feelings. I take my inspiration from the great Impressionists as well as old masters of the Renaissance period, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, and Caravaggio. I capture the mood of the surrounding world through colors and lines. I am also drawn towards the simple and unpretentious. I use traditional materials such as oil, watercolor, ink, and pencil. Trained as a classical painter, I decided to expand my artistic view on abstract forms that consist of a blend of lines and color. This reflects my interpretation of the abstract way of thinking. The sensibility is reflected in my graphics series “Love in three colors” and “Adam & Eve Rebirth”. Each work depicts an emotional connection between people, an expression of love, passions, and movement as a continuation of life" Elena Iosilevich is a Russian-American artist who was born in Kaliningrad, Russia. Elena studied fashion design at LEX University in Tallinn. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Elena returned to Kaliningrad, where she earned her diploma from the Art and Industry College in Decorative Art major. It was here that she got her first experience as an art teacher in the local elementary school and as a stage designer for the school of performing arts. In 1996, Elena moved to New York. She participated in the intensive two-year program for figurative drawing at The National Academy and School of Fine Art. During her study at NASFA, Elena met great artists such as Sharon Sprung, Nicholas M. DollarRaynolds, Eric March and took multiple private art lessons with Brandon Soloff at Chelsea Classical Studio. Elena's interest in classical drawing and painting allowed her to build a strong understanding of the core rules in fine art. For the past years, Elena has been focusing on developing new techniques and expanding her view in abstract art. Elena is a member of the Southampton Artist Association, National Association of Women Artist, an International Art Alliance, and Brooklyn Arts Council. Elena believes that observation and creativity, as well as hard work and learning, are the keys to her development as an artist. She currently lives and works in New York, NY.

Alexander Rees The famous American art critic and collector, Robert Harris Rothschild, wrote: ”Alexander’s works are popular because they celebrate the beauty of the city in all seasons of the year. His vibrant brushwork, his spatially open and airy compositions, and his beautiful blending and mixing of the colors that compose his forms all are essential elements that build his pictures. His paintings create a wonderful scenic, atmospheric moods, and feeling”. Alexander Rees was born in Moscow, Russia. He received his doctorate degree at the Gnesin Institute, now the Russian Academy of Music. Dr. Rees performed as a soloist, conductor, and chamber musician. Alexander played with prestigious chamber groups such as the Borodin String Quartet, Svyatoslav Richter chamber ensemble, Madrigal Baroque Ensemble, and many others. Alexander Rees found his passion for creating art during his teenage years. Since that time, he has been producing sketches and paintings. For many years, Alexander kept his art hidden from the public. It could only be viewed in private collections. After the publication of Alexander’s first art book, Moscow-New York-Moscow in 2003, Dr. Rees received several offerings from galleries to exhibit his art. After that, Alexander has participated in many solo and group exhibitions at reputable institutions such as The Museum of Russian Art in Jersey City, Pleiades Gallery of Contemporary Art and Salomon Art Gallery in New York, and others. Yelena Lezhen Yelena Lezhen is an American artist located in New Jersey near New York City. Born and raised in Ukraine, she graduated from an art school and then the Art and Design Colledge in Kyiv, Ukraine. Her preferred media is oil, acrylic, and ink on canvas and paper. Yelena started painting at an early age and continued to do so after immigrating to the US and settling down in New York. Unforgettable, surrealistic images brought from the artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imagination to paper or canvas are inspired by her thoughts, dreams, memories and filled with a childhood melody, the charm of forgotten moments. Total freedom of light, color, and complexity of composition in many of her works gives a feeling of watching the life itself in its multilayered manifestations. Mark Kaufman Born on the prairie, Mark Kaufman has called the mid-Atlantic home for decades. He began to study in painting at the Corcoran School of Arts & Design (Washington D.C.) while still in high school and continued at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts whose graduates include Mary Cassatt and Thomas Eakins. His works were part of the exhibition dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Academy at the American Museum of Art in Philadelphia. The artist works with watercolor by layering washes and glazes on a softly sketched image that is then erased. It is quick compared with other mediums. Mark’s focus is on figures. He explains, “Painting figures and faces is a challenge. We know the human face and body so well that there is no room for error. It takes a delicate balance between fluidity and precision. Figures are windows into the mind. The focus this work requires is an integral part of both controlling and expressing the bipolar, which I must manage every day. It is like deep breathing. It is an external structure and discipline.” He is now a signature member of the Baltimore, Philadelphia and Delaware Watercolor Societies. Other media include woodcuts, a traditional form of printing, graphite, and charcoal. His works have appeared in galleries across the country including the New Orleans National Show 2017, 2018, Focus Point International Gallery, Gallery 311, Raleigh, N.C. Nadia Klionsky Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Nadia Klionsky began her art training with her father, Marc Klionsky, a prominent artist in Russia and the US. He remained Nadia’s mentor throughout her life. She attended Intermediate Art School, an affiliate of St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. After immigrating to the United States at the age of thirteen, she continued to pursue her art education at The Cooper Union in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia College of Art. Ms. Klionsky’s exhibition record includes gallery and museum venues in the United States and abroad. One of her first exhibitions in New York was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she was featured in a group exhibition of “Outstanding Young Artists of NYC”. She was selected by a panel of distinguished international art critics, curators, scholars, and historians as one of a few artists representing the United States among 35 other countries for the 1999 Biennale Internationale Del’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy. Ms. Klionsky’s work has appeared in publications, such as Architectural Digest Magazine, and New American Paintings, where her work was featured on the cover. Ms. Klionsky was represented by Hammer Galleries in New York for many years and later was represented by Elizabeth Moss Galleries in Falmouth, Maine. In 2014, she had a retrospective exhibition at Elizabeth Moss Galleries. Ms. Klionsky has received numerous honors and awards. In 2014, Ms. Klionsky was elected to become a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts. She was also elected to the National Association of Women Artists, the Salmagundi Club, the Audubon Artists Organization, and the Allied Artists of America, where she currently serves on the board. These works on paper were done in 1990s. They are based on the “stream of consciousness” concept through juxtopositions of images, movement, and color.

Julia Michry The highly detailed and almost ornamental watercolors that Julia Michry produces are rooted in her Russian background. Masters like Victor Vasnetsov, Isaak Levitan and Aleksey Savrasov deeply influenced her work. Julia’s love for art and design started early and by the fourth grade she was enrolled in an art school for gifted students in Saint Petersburg, Russia. After graduating from high school, Julia studied fashion design at the Saint Petersburg Art and Industry Academy, one of the country’s best art colleges. She continued her studies in America, earning a BA in Graphic Design from New York’s School of Visual Arts. Julia's favorite medium is watercolor because of its transparency and flow of color. Her landscapes bring the outside world in, an idea that gained strength in the beginning of the last century. She strives to bridge the chasm between everyday life and nature. By bringing the beauty of landscape into the forefront, we are reminded to slow down and reconnect with the natural world. In doing so, we tap into our deeper selves. The artist has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout the tri-state area, including two solo exhibitions at Tuxedo Park and Sloatsburg libraries, and Russian Museum of Modern Art and Pushkin Society Artists Guild group exhibitions in New York City in 2017 and 2018. Julia also participated in several national and international art festivals as well as competitions. Alyona Mak Alyona Mak is an artist and a designer of Russian origin, living and working in New York. Alyona graduated from Pratt Institute with an MA in Industrial Design. She studied art in Russia, the US, Italy, and Denmark and has worked as a designer and illustrator for almost 20 years in a variety of design fields. Recently Alyona was commissioned to create over twenty hand-painted watercolor and ink illustrations for Barnes & Noble, which are now a part of the store environments in Dallas, Atlanta, New Orleans and other locations around the US. Over the years she created original illustrations for Ritz Carlton, Stagebill, Black Book Magazine, and Ipolita, to name a few. Alyona received a special award for Design Excellence from the Society of Publication Designers (1997) and became a Merit Award Winner of Taiwan International Design Competition / Exhibit “Humor & Design” in 2007. Her sleeping bag for two became a part of the permanent collection of Taiwan Modern Design Museum. Her works were published in ID Magazine, Black Book Magazine, Stagebill, Tango Magazine, 32nd Publication Design Annual and in a number of web Design Portals. Olga Malamud-Pavlovich Olga Malamud-Pavlovich is originally from Russia and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. She has begun studying art since childhood. Olga continued her journey through the art world after she came to the USA. She never stopped learning as much as she could about the arts. Olga has studied several years with Frederick Wong at the Art Students League and has taken a number of workshops with other esteemed artists in New York. Olga's paintings have been included in numerous group exhibitions in local galleries and business offices in Brooklyn and Manhattan, at the Art Students League of New York and are also held in private collections in Russia, Belgium, and the USA. Olga Malamud works with watercolor and acrylic, mixed media on paper and canvas. Victoriya Kondratyuk Victoriya Kondratyuk was born and raised in the Soviet Union. She received a degree from the Polytechnic University in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and worked most of her life as a researcher in the metrology field. Although never formally trained in art, she has always loved painting and drawing. After her retirement, Victoriya started drawing for pleasure and continued to do so when she came to America in 2007. In 2016 Victoriya started taking classes in Tatiana Zaikaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art studio in Brooklyn. Since then, she has participated in four group exhibitions at JASA Center (Brooklyn), at group exhibitions of Pushkin Society Artists Guild in New York. She also took a master class with Alexander Dudorov, a well known Russian artist. Victoriya works mostly with acrylic, oil, and watercolor. She draws her inspiration from the natural beauty of the world. An avid gardener, Victoriya enjoys depicting flowers and landscapes. She recently started experimenting with portraits and figure drawing.

Elena Zelenina “I often start with a meditation to connect with my untamed spirit. My whole life I’ve been using art as a tool to help others, to open them up, to heal, to start them on a new adventure. In reality, I was helping myself to have courage, to trust life, and to be ready to meet the unknown”. Elena’s childhood in Russia was defined by neutral color fantasies, fairy tale dreams of Prince Charming, and winter wonderlands. As a child, she was surrounded by greatness. Elena grew up in the studios of two artists M.BIryukov (1926-1995), her stepfather and Godfather, and N.Gladkih (1927-1995), her uncle. Spending summers by the sea watching her uncle painting with all shades of blue and green, or being in the studio alongside her stepfather shaped Elena to a great extent. However, they differ significantly as they magnified the beauty of the real world, and Elena often paints the unmanifested reality. For years Elena wondered who she was as an artist. Elena met her creative destiny while surrounded by vibrant ineffable colors of India. In 2008 she trekked the Himalayan Mountains where she stood above the clouds in complete awe of the place and the creation. A shock wave went through her body that allowed her to feel and realize her potential as an artist. Exploring India became her new journey. The music, the food, the colors, the spirit was almost addictive. It was a virtuous circle. As she went deeper into herself, Elena felt the craving to come back again and again. During her travels, Elena discovered the navigation map of the Creative Spirit, Vedic Art. In 2013, Elena became a certified Vedic Art Instructor which defined her true purpose. Elena’s identity as an artist is to help others experience the state of Oneness and their highest potential, the concepts she explores at length in her book “Art Completes You. Transformation through Art and The Science of Completion.”

Vladimir Deming Vladimir Deming is a Russian-born artist that is most known for his jewelry design. Upon graduating with a Master Degree from an Academy of Industrial Art, St. Petersburg, Russia, he started his career as an industrial designer and in addition helped his father who was a stage jewelry designer for the St. Petersburg Musical Comedy Theater as well as the movie production industry. Vladimir went on to become a jewelry designer in his own right, briefly working in this capacity for the Vienna Opera House while awaiting an immigration visa to the US. Once in New York, Vladimir worked as a jewelry designer for several jewelry companies and then developed his own business, making jewelry for private clients and restoring ceramics for antique dealers. Vladimir has also been teaching at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York for over 30 years, first, the course in Restoration of Ceramics and later, Handcrafted Costume Jewelry. About 12 years ago, Vladimir came across a book called “Autobiography of a Yogi”, by Paramahansa Yogananda. This book left a deep impression on him. He traveled to India every year since to meditate and practice an ancient science of Yoga. Vladimir credits this annual pilgrimage for his good health and artistic energy. In these travels, the artist couldn’t help but wonder about the beauty and wisdom of this vast country and its amazing people. He started photographing scenes that struck him the most, accumulating over 4000 photos about the daily life, religious celebrations, Yoga practice, and the exotic views of the countryside. These photographs as a well-kept secret, have never been seen by the public before. Vladimir says, “I tried to capture unusual images that were in front of me, with all their kaleidoscopic chaos and colorful bustle. Katsura Okada Katsura Okada was born in Tokyo, Japan, attended Sokei Academy of Fine Art & Design and has a Master of Japanese Calligraphy Arts from the Tokyo Academy of Calligraphy Art. The artist’s distinctive works include a myriad of tiny dots painted by brush in different colors and arranged in a particular order to give an impression of an organic form or an abstract shape. Katsura utilizes powdered golden pigments, ink and natural liquid adhesive on handmade paper to produce her unique lightweight paintings. Says the artist: “For this new Flecks of Shine series, I‘ve created my own technique of painting tiny dots in gold; after undergoing a special process, the pigment’s texture and flecks are permanently fixed in gold. Every tiny part, every groove reflects the light, amplifying its natural beauty”. Since 1990, Okada’s work has been shown extensively worldwide, including many European countries, Mexico, Canada and the United States. She has exhibited in a number of galleries in Brooklyn and NYC, including A.I.R. Gallery, Black and White Gallery, Columbia and Marymount Manhattan Colleges among others. Recently, Okada’s works have been exhibited at Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Hammond Museum in North Salem, New York, and Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, She also participated in the 57th Venice Biennial in 2017. The artist’s works have been shown in her native Japan in Karuizawa New Art Museum in Nagano, and the Museum of Arts & Crafts-Itami in Hyogo. Okada has received first prize/grants from Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Shoto Museum of Art in Tokyo and the SoHo Art Competition in New York among others. Natalia Koren Kropf “I refer to life as to a process. I prefer printmaking media for its technical complexity and visual simplicity - a print on a clean paper, where less implies more, where simple becomes capacious. To me prints are like poems - they are hand-printed notes on current thoughts, potent fragments of feelings and sketches of my surroundings. The layering of prints brings forth multi-layered thoughts and memories. I combine prints into one composition to convey the challenges and the joys in the life of a contemporary artist. My classical education provides a sound foundation for my work with reference and reverence to masters that are influential in forming my own aesthetic.
