Dear Colleagues and Friends, Dear Colleagues and Friends, To date “HydroMediT” is being established as one of the major International Congresses on novel scientific and technological trends and aspects on aquatic living resources in our region, covering the Mediterranean and its adjacent seas.

It is organized biannually by a highly dedicated Committee on behalf of the: • D epartment of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment (DIAE), University of Thessaly (UΤh) • Department of Marine Sciences (DMS), University of the Aegean (UoA) • Department of Fisheries & Aquaculture Technology (DFAT), University of Applied Sciences of Western Greece • Panhellenic Society of Technologists Ichthyologists (PASTI) Our 3rd Congress (HydroMediT 2018) is being hosted in Volos, Hellas (www.dimosvolos.gr/?lang=en), with a series of national and international stakeholders as co-organizers, supporters and sponsors. The general fields and the specific topics of the Congress will attract contributions from all over the Mediterranean and its adjacent seas, and their list can be viewed in full on the Congress website, which is updated regularly.

There is an outstanding set of keynote speakers from many fields of the fisheries, aquaculture and seafood supply industry, as well as government agencies, environmental bodies, and biodiversity scientists. We have joined our forces and resources in order to host a series of high profile panel discussions on the encountered thematic and parallel sessions. Our Congress provides an ideal forum for interactions between science, regulators, industry, and the concerned general public, and has already attracted pivotal support from a range of delegates and interesting groups.

The topic of the meeting, “Blue Biotechnology in Aquatic Living Resources”, highlights the importance of novel methods in the secure and sustainable supply of good quality food from the sea. Policy makers, industry players, scientists, and conservationists shall work together as they are all determined to deal with the challenges this growth presents, and to ensure that biomachines in real time make a positive contribution to the sustainability of aquatic living resources in a changing world.

Our key note speaker will be the distinguished Professor Achillefs Kapanidis of the University of Oxford, addressing on “Single-molecule stories: from biological nanomachines to smart biosensors”, and the different sessions will run from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th of November 2018.

General Information HydroMediT 2018 will focus on research and innovation technology applied mainly in the Mediterranean and its adjacent waters, but interesting solutions from other parts of the world will also be accepted.

Main topic of the Congress will be: Blue Biotechnology in Aquatic Living Resources The official language of the conference is English.

Papers will be peer reviewed by two (2) reviewers and only those accepted by the Scientific Committee will be presented. The oral presentations must be less than 15 minutes.

A E-Poster Session will be included in the Congress. Scientific Committee reserves the right to re-assign submission to a different type of presentation (from oral to poster, and vice - versa).

Proceedings will be available to delegates upon arrival on site (in digital or web-based format).

Author Guidelines (please refer to the sample below) • Type of file: Word • Paper format: standard Α4 (portrait), margins: top=4cm, bottom=2.5cm, left=2.5 cm, right=2.5cm • Font: Times New Roman.

• Length: (a) for Oral presentations in minimum 4 to maximum 5 pages, and (b) for E-Poster presentations in maximum 2 pages, Including, in both cases, Tables, Figures and Illustrations. Please do not use page numbering.

• Title of paper: type in bold in upper-case letters (full capitals), font size 12 dpi, centered text, single spaced. Scientific names in the title in italics in lower-case.

• Author(s): leave one line (12 dpi) between title and author(s). Type in bold, 12 dpi, centered text, single spaced. Mention first the surname and then the initial(s) of each author. Only the first letter and the initial(s) are capitalized. Initial(s) are followed by a full-stop, while use a comma (,) for separating names of each author (e.g. Smith A., Cooper B.). Do not use the word “and” for the last author. Use an asterisk (*) after the name of the corresponding author. Authors with different affiliation must be numbered consecutively (e.g. Smith A.1*, Cooper B.2).

• Affiliation: Leave one line (10 dpi) between author(s) and affiliation. Use 10 dpi font size, non-bold, full intended, single-spaced. Use a different number for each institution. Mention first the name of the Laboratory, then Department, School, Insitution/University, postal address, post code, city, country.

• Abstract: Leave one line (10 dpi) between affiliation and abstract. For the word “Abstract” use left margin, upper/lower case, 10 dpi, bold. Do not leave a line between the word abstract and its text. Type text in 10 dpi, single spaced and full indented. Text not exceeding 250 words.

• Key words: Do not leave a line between abstract and key words. Give 3-5 representative key words and type in italics, 10 dpi.

• Corresponding author: Do not leave a line between key words and corresponding author. Give the full name of the corresponding author and type in 10 dpi, non-bold, give his/her email address in parenthesis e.g. *Corresponding author: Smith Robert (rsmith@abc.ac.uk) • Main text: Generally, all papers should be divided into the following sections and appear in the order: 1. Introduction – 2. Material and Methods – 3. Results – 4. Discussion – Acknowledgements – References. The Results and Discussion sections may be combined and may contain subheadings.

The headings of sections must be typed in bold (not in full caps). Leave a line (10 dpi) between each section. The main text must be typed in 10 dpi font size, single spaced, fully indented. The first line of each paragraph should be intended at 1.27cm.

Latin nomenclature and scientific names of organisms should be typed in italics. Complete scientific names should be given when organisms are first mentioned in the text and in tables, figures and key words. The generic name may subsequently be abbreviated to the initial, e.g. S. aurata.

• Tables and Figures: These should be referred to in the text using Arabic numbers, e.g. Figure 1, Table 1, etc., in order of appearance. Do not use abbreviations (e.g. Fig. 1). Please leave a line before and after a Table/Figure to separate it from the main text.

Figure legends are given below the figure, while the titles of Tables above the Table. Both legends and titles are typed in Bold, 10 dpi, upper/lower case, single spaced, full indented. Within Tables, text and symbols may be typed in 8 to 10 dpi font size, but non-bold. Below the Table, a note can be used for explanatory purposes.

Colored figures, illustrations etc. are permitted as proceedings will be only in electronic form.

• References: References should be cited in the text by author and date, e.g. Lie & Hemre (1990). Please use the symbol “&” instead of “and”. Joint authors should be referred to by et al. (in italics) if there are more than two, e.g.

Hemre et al. (1990). More than one paper from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters a, b, c, etc., placed after the year of publication. Listings of references in the text should be chronological. At the end of the paper, references should be listed alphabetically according to the first named author. The full titles of papers, chapters and books should be given, with the first and last page numbers.

Ιnvited Speakers Prof. Achilles Kapanidis Professor of Biological Physics, Oxford University, Oxford, UK Achilles Kapanidis studied Chemistry at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and completed a Master’s in Food Science and a PhD in Biological Chemistry at Rutgers University (USA). After holding research scientist positions in single-molecule biophysics at Berkeley and UCLA, he became a Senior Lecturer at Oxford University in 2005, and a Professor of Biological Physics in 2013; Prof Kapanidis has also been an ERC grant holder and a Wellcome Trust Investigator. Prof Kapanidis is currently leading a group of physical and biological scientists (the “Gene Machines” group) which studies microbial biological machinery in gene expression, maintenance, and regulation, with a focus on gene transcription and DNA repair. The main tool of the group is single-molecule fluorescence microscopy. Prof Kapanidis has also been pursuing miniaturized single-molecule imaging, a project that culminated in the formation of the Oxford Nanoimaging spin-out.

Prof. Yuri Kartavtsev Laboratory of Molecular Systematics Head, National Scientific Center of Marine biology, Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS).

Vladivostok, Primorye District, Russia Yuri Kartavtsev Graduated from the Far Eastern State University, Vladivostok 1971. Ph.D. 1978, S.D.1995, professor certificate 2012. His major research interests focus on Population, Evolutionary & Ecological Genetics, Evolutionary Genomics, Conservation Genetics, Phylogenetics, Genetic Basis of Heterosis, Genetics of Quantitative Traits, Genetics of Reproduction and Animal Stock Rehabilitation. Yuri Kartavtsev has been appointed as head of major research grants from 2002 until today. More specifically: • 2002 until 2006: Head of the grant project in the frame of the State Program “Cooperation of Science and Education”.

• 2007-2009. Head of the 2 grant projects by Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

• 2009-2011. Head of the grant project funded by Russia Academy of Science Board.

• 2011-current. Head of 5 grant projects by Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

Prof. Cemal Turan Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetic Laboratory, Marine Sciences and Technology Faculty, Iskenderun Technical University, 31220, Iskenderun, Hatay, Turkey.

Cemal Turan is heading Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetic Laboratory and has 20 years’ experience in marine biodiversity, molecular ecology, marine biotechnology and fisheries management. He was awarded as the Outstanding Young Scientist Award by the Turkish Academy of Sciences. He used to be Chair of Living Resources and Marine Ecosystem in the CIESM (The Mediterranean Science Commission) between 2007 and 2013. He has published more than 250 scientific papers, books and book chapters and patents. He has received several external national and international research grants and participated in European projects as partner. Has was involved in organising several international Congress, Symposiums and Workshops. He is Editor and member of Editorial Boards of International Journals. He also serves on various bodies as a scientific committee member, including General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policy and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Turkey, Turkish Marine Foundation, and be invited several times to the expert meetings by GFCM.

Prof. Reyhan Akcaalan Professor in limnology, Faculty of Aquatic Sciences, Istanbul University, Turkey Reyhan Akcaalan graduated from Fisheries Faculty, Ege University and obtained Master and PhD degrees in limnology, specialization in water quality and cyanobacteria/cyanotoxins from Istanbul University. She spent one year in Prof.

Codd’s lab in Dundee University working on cyanotoxins. She is currently the Head of Department of Freshwater and Marine Biology.

Her research interests are toxic cyanobacteria, eutrophication, taste and odour problems, water management, especially the understanding of cyanobacteria bloom dynamics and toxin production in lakes and reservoirs and the effect of toxins on biota.

She is coauthor of publications in international journals, co-chair of national and international conferences and scientific meetings. She has been coordinator/ member of national/international projects.

Dr Constantinos Mylonas Deputy Director, Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture Hellenic Center for Marine Research, Athens, Greece Constantinos C Mylonas is a research director at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture, of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR). He studied Aquaculture (B.Sc.) at Texas A&M University (1988), followed by an M.Sc. degree in Zoology at North Carolina State University (1991) evaluating the application of pharmacological methods for the induction of ovulation in salmonids. He completed his studies with a Ph.D. in Marine-Estuarine and Environmental Sciences at the University of Maryland (1996) studying the reproductive endocrinology of Moronidae fishes and the use of controlledrelease delivery systems for gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa), in the induction of ovulation and enhancement of sperm production.

The research field of Dr. CC Mylonas may be summarized in (a) the study of fish reproductive biology and endocrinology, (b) the identification of the dysfunctions exhibited by female and male broodstocks in captive conditions, and (c) the development of pharmacological methods for the control of reproduction, induction of spawning and improvement of sperm production in fish of interest for the aquaculture industry. In this framework, he is involved in basic and applied research, aiming at the optimization of broodstock management methods, focusing on marine fishes. Some of the species of interest include the meagre (Argyrosomus regius), wreckfish (Polyprion americanus), greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and the Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). Dr CC Mylonas has published 109 scientific articles with an ISI-Index (H-index 34) and has co-authored 5 books on the reproduction of fish.

Prof. Mark Dickey-Collas Ecosystem Approach Coordinator, Professional Officer (PO3) at ICES and Associate Professor at Danish Technical University, National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Copenhagen V, Denmark Mark Dickey-Collas (@DickeyCollas) is the ecosystem approach coordinator in the secretariat of ICES (www.ices.dk). He facilitates the development of the ecosystem approach for sustainable exploitation of the marine ecosystem and regional ecosystem assessments. Mark has 25 years experienced in providing fisheries and marine science advice to national and international institutions and has a particular expertise in pelagic fish and fisheries, having previously worked in national fisheries science laboratories in Northern Ireland and the Netherlands. Mark liaises with international and EU marine management and science organisations on issues such as ecosystem assessment, data provision, Good Environmental Status (MSFD), vulnerable species and impacts of fishing.

His scientific experience is in the field of population dynamics, ecosystem modelling and the policy/science interface (http://www.researcherid.com/ rid/A-8036-2008). Mark is a member of the IMBER science steering committee (www.imber.info) and member of the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance WG on ecosystem based approach.

Dr Χavier Durrieu de Madron Research Director, French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Centre d’Etude et de Formation sur les Environnements Méditerranéens (CEFREM),Université de Perpignan Via Domitia, France Xavier Durrieu de Madron is research director at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and his laboratory (CEFREM) is based in Perpignan.

He obtained a BSc in Physics from the University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis (France), a Master in Oceanography from the University of Aix-Marseille (France). He earned his PhD in Oceanography from the Neuchâtel (Switzerland) where he worked on shelf-slope exchanges processes on Mediterranean and Atlantic continental margins. He then moved to the Florida State University in Tallahassee for his postdoctoral work on the deep circulation in the Brasil basin.

His current research focuses on dense water formation processes and effects on sediment transport in coastal and deep marine environments, with an emphasis on Mediterranean ecosystems. He also works on suspended particles dynamics, especially on the size spectra, aggregation, and settling. He has extensive field activity and has participated in or directed numerous oceanographic cruises. Xavier is leading the MERMEX (Marine Ecosystems Response in the Mediterranean Experiment) project and was involved in great number of French and EU-funded projects.

The City of Volos Volos is one of the largest and most attractive cities in Greece as well as one of the country’s most prominent ports. The modern-day city, built near the site of ancient Iolcos, dominates the region of Magnesia from its position at the foot of Mount Pelion overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf. This is one of the most beautiful areas in Thessaly, in the centre of Greece (Volos is situated 320km N of Athens and 219km S of Thessaloniki) combining the allure of the sea with the mystical charm of the Centaurs’ mountain.

The area’s mythical background captivates the visitor’s imagination. Magnesia features in some of the most remarkable tales in Greek mythology. The progenitor of its peoples was Magnes, son of Zeus and Aeolus, yet Magnesia is believed to be the birthplace of a strange race, the Centaurs, beings which were part equine, part human and originated from the union of Nephele and Ixion. Asclepius and Achilles were, among others, pupils of the Centaur Chiron. The famous Argonaut expedition, one of the greatest epics in the Greek mythological cycle, set sail from the Pagasetic Gulf.
