Biomedical Science

Professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science and the Royal Society of Biology this degree is designed to enable you to develop, integrate and apply scientific knowledge, understanding and skills to the multi-disciplinary investigation of human disease and disorders, such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Laboratory and teaching sessions will provide you with the scientific knowledge and essential technical skills that will prepare you for years two and three.

Biomedical Sciences with Health, Exercise & Nutrition

BSc (Hons)

Professionally accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, this unique degree focuses on the scientific study of aspects of both lifestyle and wellbeing which encompasses different strategies that can be employed to improve health and health promotion. Emphasis is placed on the role that exercise, health promotion and nutrition contribute to this end. You will be introduced to the underlying themes of human nutrition, human physiology, biochemistry, and the body’s response to exercise (including the ability of exercise to elicit health benefits via its impact on the physical and mental development of the body).

Typical modules

In your first year you will gain an understanding of human physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology and immunology. On successful completion of the first year, students can decide which degree to follow from year two onwards. Modules from years two and three may include:

• Blood & Cellular Sciences

• Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology

• Molecular Biology & Genetics

• Clinical Exercise Physiology & Physiological Wellbeing

• Nutrition in Sport & Exercise

Your future

• Biomedical Science graduates will be equipped to become a Biomedical Scientist and find employment in pathology laboratories, research laboratories, the food industry, forensic science, pharmaceuticals, health and safety, commerce, and teaching.

• Biomedical Sciences with Health, Exercise and Nutrition graduates will be equipped to work in the health and fitness sectors including the Sport and Leisure industry, National Health Service, National Sports Councils, Sporting National Governing Bodies, Health Promotion and Wales National Exercise Referral Scheme.

• Many of our graduates have gone on to study for higher degrees at Cardiff Met, as well as graduate entry medicine and dentistry degrees, Physician Associate training, Clinical Scientist training and further professional qualifications.
