Social Work BSc (Hons)
Change lives and qualify as a registered Social Worker.
The study of Social Work involves a flexible approach to meeting the needs of individuals, groups or communities. This degree is based on the National Occupational Standards for Social Work practice and is delivered in partnership with local Social Work agencies and with representatives of individuals that use services and carers. It combines and integrates professional training in Social Work with academic study to degree level. You will explore the legislative provision of services and the importance of understanding Social Work within a Welsh, UK and International context.
Integration of theory to practice underpins this degree. Throughout your three years, you will be supported within practice by one of our host agencies and will be required to undertake at least 200 days of practice-based learning to consolidate your learning.
Year one presents an introduction to Social Work. You will undertake 20 days of assessed practice through which you must demonstrate that you have the interpersonal skills and values required to engage in work with people with social care needs and their carers. Study focuses on core values and skills, as well as broader social, cultural and institutional processes that frame the role and task of social work.
In years two and three you will apply and develop your knowledge, skills, values and competence in social work practice, so you can excel. You will complete a further 180 days in assessed practice learning settings (80 days in year two and 100 days in year three), which involves a minimum of two practice settings. This provides you with a range of learning opportunities to demonstrate competence in relation to National Occupational Standards for Social Work (2011) and the Code of Professional Practice for Social Care (2017). By the end you will be able to apply social work knowledge, skills and values including research findings into your practice and within academically assessed work.
You will be supported to evaluate the impact of inequality, disadvantage and oppression and to critically consider contemporary social work issues. On completion, you will be able to demonstrate professional judgement, intervention and critical and analytical reflection across your practice to be able to address complex social issues and be an accomplished Social Worker.
