Sociology BSc (Hons)*
This new Sociology degree provides a broad based, contemporary and practical sociological understanding in local, national and international contexts.
Sociology is both a theoretical and an evidence-based discipline. On this forward-thinking degree, you will gain a deep understanding of political theory, philosophy, ethics, and social, public and civic policy, as well as key practical skills in research, policy, and practice.
You will develop an understanding of Sociology as a practical tool to help you identify, appraise and address social issues. And you will cultivate skills highly sought after by employers including leadership, reflective practice and problem-solving abilities.
There is a deep focus upon employability throughout the course. In the second year, you will undertake a placement module, offering you real-world relevant workplace experience. As part of this, you will also gain the Level 5 Institute of Leadership and Management qualification. In year three, you will develop and demonstrate your business and leadership skills with the opportunity to scope, design and pitch a social enterprise-based solution to a real-world societal problem.
Employability is enhanced through close working relationships with key graduate employment destinations, such as local and national government, third sector and policy organisations.
You will be taught by expert teaching staff who have specialisms in a wide range of sociological areas, including housing, welfare, education and social work.
Module Themes
Place of study: Llandaff Campus
Course length: 3 years full-time
You will study two modules aligned to each theme. One module will take a broad, conceptual approach, introducing students to key sociological theories and debates. The second centres around real-world and practical use of these theories. Key themes are:
