Study primary education though a contemporary lens.

This degree is rooted in the field of education studies, providing you with the knowledge of fundamental issues in education across a range of contexts and environments. The course has a specific focus on the primary sector and will provide an ideal platform for those interested in careers in primary education, as well as working in the wider fields of education, teaching and health.

There are two pathways of study available:

• BA (Hons) Primary Education Studies

• BA (Anrh) Astudiaethau Addysg Gynradd (Dwyieithog)**

Modules introduce and explore contemporary issues and debates surrounding equality, gender, globalisation, sustainability, and technologies. You will engage with a range of concepts and competing perspectives which influence and affect children’s experiences within society and education. Teaching and learning encourages you to engage with the relationship between social, political, and economic landscapes, issues, and policies. At each stage you will be encouraged and supported to develop your capacity to think critically and creatively.

Regular opportunities for work-based experience and current practice are available using the latest technologies and learning strategies. In year one you will attend a placement in an alternative setting outside of primary education, e.g., private nursery, community playgroup, secondary school, hospital school or sports coaching. In year two you will work in a primary school as a teaching assistant and in an observational capacity. Both experiences introduce you to a wide range of career paths.

You will be taught by research active academics and guest speakers from local nurseries, schools and pupil referral units. Local field trips enhance your learning. You will spend time in classrooms and various outdoor settings, including the University's Outdoor Learning Centre. You can also choose to gain the Level 2 Forest School qualification. In addition, you will explore the importance of block play, woodwork, clay and gardening at our specialist resource space, Froebel House. All these practices, plus extracurricular experiences on offer, develop your knowledge and understanding of curriculum, pedagogy and practice.
