One degree – three subject specialisms.

This unique applied degree examines educational issues and additional learning needs from psychological perspectives. The degree will provide you with an in-depth theoretical knowledge and the practical strategies needed to support a range of learners, including those with additional learning needs.

There is a strong focus on psychology throughout the degree. You will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to understand how applied psychology can inform education policy and practice in a variety of contexts.

You will explore the varying fields of psychology and how they can contribute to our understanding of such things as social, emotional and physical development, additional learning needs, school behaviour, mental and biological processes of learning, and the influence of self-esteem and motivation on learning and achievement. There is also an emphasis throughout on the importance of critical thinking in the context of educational practice, and the development of research skills within education.

You will be taught by staff who are highly experienced in the application of psychology to educational contexts, both in mainstream and special education.

Throughout this exciting degree you will undertake work experience in a range of educational settings, including special needs schools and specialist provisions within mainstream schools. You will also have opportunities to complete additional training and accredited courses, such as Autism Aware training, further enhancing your employability and career opportunities.

Typical modules

Your future

• Typical careers include working with individuals who have a range of additional learning needs, educational support services, educational social work and educational psychology.

• This degree also provides a platform to progress to teacher training. At Cardiff Met all graduates are guaranteed an interview for the Primary PGCE, subject to meeting entry requirements.

• Progression to further postgraduate and PhD study is available, including our MA Education and BPS accredited MSc Psychology in Education at Cardiff Met.
