Anextremelyversatileartist,respectedteacherandanavidwriter,Subramanyandevelopedhisrepertoirewithinspirationfrom Indiantraditionalartsandcrafts.Hisexperimentswithreversepaintingsbeganaroundthelate1970’s,therebyexposinghimto manypossibilities.Theseworksstressedonelaboratevisualnarrativesandarechargedwithhumour,surpriseandtheinexplicable. “Idoodleconstantly,basedontheimagesIseeandtheirtransformations.Theirmentalextensionsandchangesofidentity.Iwant mypaintingtobeasquickanddirectasmydoodles,andthefinalstagesofmostpaintingstrytohavetheirspontaneity.They oftenalter,evenreverse,theoriginallogic.InthewayIdoreversepaintings,allchangesandimprovisationspertaintotheearly stageswhereIusewatercolours.HereIcanchange,evenwipeoutimages,introducenewdetails.Inthelaterstage,whereIback orlockthewater-colourimagewithoilcolours,myimprovisationsareconfinedtotheuseofcolour.Whilepaintingwithgouache coloursoroils,Icanimproviseateverystage[…]Itrytogivemyreversepaintingsaniconiccharacter.Ihaveusedinformal sketchinessonlyinafewofthem.(K.G.SubramanyaninconversationwithR.SivaKumar,NewWorks:K.G.Subramanyan2014, SeagullFoundationfortheArts,exhibitioncatalogue,Calcutta,2014,p.7&8)

FrancisNewtonSouza(1924-2002)isamongIndia's mostinfluentialmodernpainters.Muchlikehismoniker, EnfantTerribleofIndianArt,hewasafreethinker, oftenrebelliousinhisideologiesandirreverentto institutionshefeltwererestrictiveandoutdatedintheir norms.
Heoftenportrayedsubjectsthataregrotesqueoroften immenselydisproportionate-whetherafaceora landscapeandaimedfortheshockfactormorethanthe aestheticallypleasing.Hedidthistochallengeexisting ideasandposithisownsocialcommentaryorcriticism.
Onesuchideawaswomanhoodandsexuality,whichhe exploredonnumerouscanvasesthroughouthis painterlycareer.Inthem,heportrayedhisoften complexviewsonthetopic,themorality,andtheguilt ofteninvolvedwithit.
Thecurrentpicture,paintedin1984,isanexampleof this.Init,Souzadepictedawomaninthenude,
focusingonherbreastsandvoluptuousbody,whichis moreexaggeratedthanrealistic.Hepaintedanerotic woman,unashamedandfreefromanysocial limitations.Doingwithoutsubtlenessandportrayingan imageofsensualitythatisforthright,directand unapologetic,muchliketheartist.
ThenudesofSouzaare,inalllikelihood,intendedto undermineCatholicmoralityandnormstoexposethe Church'sinflexibilityandself-righteousness.Ashe explainedinhis1992article'NakedWomenand Religion,publishedinDebonairmagazine,"AsaRoman Catholicyouth,borninGoa,Iwasfamiliarwithpriests bellowingsermonsfrompulpitsagainstsexand immodestyparticularlyaddressedtowomen,making themstrickenwithguilt.TheCatholicmenstoodcocky intheirsuitsandties,concurringwiththepriests,lusting fornakedwomeninwardly.Hypocrites!"(asquotedin YashodharaDalmia,TheMakingofModernIndianArt: TheProgressives,OxfordUniversityPress,NewDelhi, 2001,p.92).

Itwasduringtheearly1970swhenhejoined KalaBhavanaasafacultymemberthathis arttooktothisnewdirectionofpainting aftergettinginspiredbyCompanyPeriod Lucknowtemperas.Thisswitchtoanentirely newidiomandmediawasastretchfromthe abstractgraphicsthathedidforlong; however,itdidnotclashwithhispursuitof figuration.
Inthepicture,theladyisstandingwitha gentlegesturewhileenjoyingaquiettimeof leisure.Sheexudesanairofeleganceand refinementseeninherposture,accessories, andentiredemeanor.Theportraitis achievedwithbrightflatcolorsandtidylines whileconfinedwithinborders,anidiom fashionedfromdiversesourcesofnative pictorialtradition.Aswithhisearlytemperas, thereisanobviousreferencetotheBengal Schoolbutevolvedtobeartheimprintofa modernistsensibility.

Seenhereasafacelessentity,Husaincompletelyremovedanyfacialfeaturesfromtheportraitandinsteaddepictedthe iconinoutline,almostimperceptibleifnotfortherobesshedonned,awhitesariwithabroadblueborder,accentuating theabstractfigureandimplyingasenseofcorporealityinanotherwiseabstractedfiguration.Althoughtheinsideofthe robesthatholdherpresenceisshownhollow,sheisdepictedpurportedlyreadytoreachouttohelpthedestituteintoher folds.Wittingly,thegarbwhichHusainhighlightedinhisinterpretationsofthesubjectservesasanapt,albeitabstract metaphorthateffectivelyevokesboththepersonandthesymbolismthatsheinspires.

The1970'swasaperiodwhereRaza’sstressonhisIndiansensibilitiesbecamemostapparent.Havingleftfor Franceintheearly1950's,Raza’ssenseofmemory–particularlyofhischildhoodtrystwiththeearth,forests andrivers–playedastrongroleinshapinghisartisticworldview.Thesememorieswerereinstatedandpatched togetherinthefrequentvisitshewouldmaketoIndiathroughthe1960s.
DrawingfromtheminiaturetraditionsoftheRajputsandthelandscapesofRajasthan,Razaaddressedthis senseofnostalgiathroughmajorpartsofthe1970'sand1980's.Themelangeofcoloursanddistinctbrush strokesevokeavibrantrepresentationofIndianlandscapes,whileretaininganon-representationalqualitythat hadbecometypicaltoRazabythisperiod.

4.1. ArtianaprovidesanassuranceonbehalfoftheSellerthateach artworkofferedatauction, isagenuineworkoftheartistlisted. Artianaguaranteestheauthenticityofsuchartworkforaperiodof sixmonthsfromtheauctionclosingdate Authenticityinrelationto artworksshallmeancomplianceoftheartworkwiththedescription providedonthe website, particularlywith referencetothename oftheartist, title(ifany)oftheartwork, date, theschoolofart (ifmentioned), dimensions, medium, etc.
Intheunlikely eventthatwithinsixmonthsfromthecloseofan auction, itisproved bytheBuyer, tothe reasonablesatisfactionof Artiana, thattheitem wasnotauthenticandif, inArtiana’sopinion, thiswouldhavesignificantlyimpactedthe WinningBidfortheitem, Artianashallbeentitledto rescindthesale Insuchan event, the SellerwillbeliabletorefundthepaymentfortheitemtotheBuyer,

Suchexaminableproofshouldbeprovided byanestablished andacknowledgedauthority Artiana’sdecision, with regardstosuch claims, shallbefinalandbinding.
4.2 Theaboveguarantee giveninclause4.1shallbesubjecttothe followingconditions:
•TheclaimismadebytheBuyerasregisteredwithArtiana(the benefitoftheclaimisnotassignabletoanysubsequentownersor otherswhomayacquireorhaveaninterestinanyoftheProperties)
•ThePropertyisreturnedinthesameconditionthatit wasinatthe timeofdeliveryofthePropertytotheBuyer
•TheProperty wasindisputablypurchasedthroughArtiana
4.3. InthecaseofPropertieswhichhavebeencategorised by Artiana asPreciousObjects,Artianaprovidesanassurance, onbehalfofthe Seller, thateachpieceshallcomplywithcharacteristicsorfeatures mentionedintheDescriptionofthePropertyintheAuction CatalogueforaslongasthePropertyisinthepossessionofArtiana. Allcoloredstonesunlesscertifiedmayormaynotbetreatedfor enhancements. ItisthereforeadvisableforBuyersorpotentialBuyers ofsuchProperties, toinspectthePropertypriortoBiddingorprior toshipmentorBuyerpickupfromArtiana.
Intheunlikely eventthatduringsuchinspection, theBuyerisableto provetothe reasonablesatisfactionof ArtianathatthePropertydoes notmatchthedetailsintheDescription, andif, in Artiana’sopinion, Biddersbeing awareofsucherrororomission wouldhaveBid significantlylessthantheactualSalePrice,Artianashallbeentitledto rescindthesaleandtheSellerwillbeliableto refundtotheBuyerthe SalePricepaidfortheProperty; and Artianashallhand overthe PropertytotheSelleruponrefundoftheSalePricepaidtohimfor theProperty Once Artianaobtainsthe refundedamountfromthe Seller, itshallforwardthesametotheBuyer Thisguaranteewillnot beapplicablewherethePropertyisbeingshippedtotheBuyer byArtiana.
4.4. InthecaseofPropertiessuchasantiquitiesoritemsofhistorical interestwhichhavebeencategorisedbyArtianaasCulturalArtifacts, Artianaprovidesanassurance, onbehalfoftheSeller, thateachobject ofantiquarianorhistoricalinterestorsignificancehasbeenacquired withoutviolatinganylocalorinternationallaws.
Intheunlikely eventthatitisprovedthattheacquisition, provenance and/or ownershipofsuchCultural Artifactsofferedatour Auction issubjecttoalegaldispute, theBuyershall keep Artianaindemnified fromanysuchlegalproceedings.
4.5. Inallcases Artiana retainsthe righttoconsultwith, atthe expenseoftheBuyer, uptotworecognizedexpertsinthefield (suchexpertsbeingmutuallyacceptabletoArtianaandtheBuyer), toexaminethePropertyunderquestionbeforedecidingtorescind thesaleandoffertherefundundertheaboveguarantee Theopinion oftheexpertsshallnotbebindingon Artiana.
4.6. IntheeventoftheSeller’sfailuretorefundtheproceedsasstated inthisclause, theBuyershall returnthePropertyto Artianaand authoriseArtianaasitsagenttoinitiatelegalproceedingsagainstthe Seller Anysuchstepstakenorlegalproceedingsinstituted by Artiana, againsttheSeller, shallbeatthecostoftheBuyerandArtiana’s liabilityshallbelimitedasperClause5.1.
5.1. Artianahasanobligationto refundtheSalePricetotheBuyer onlyuponrecoveryofsuchamountsfromtheSellerandinthe circumstancesdescribedinClause4above(AuthenticityGuarantee). TheBuyerindemnifiesArtianafromanynon-recoveryofsuch amountsandagreesthattheyshallnotholdArtianaresponsiblein casesuchamountsarenot recoverablefromtheSeller Artiana providesinsurancecoverageonsoldLotsforsevendaysafterthe Closing Timeoftheauction Afterthatperiod, oronceaLothasbeen collected(whicheverisearlier), theLotwillbeentirelyatthebuyer’s risk. Damages, lossesorlossin valueofanyartworks(including frames)incurredduringshippingandtransitarenotcoveredasper theinsurancepolicytaken by Artiana. IncasetheBuyeroptsfor transitinsurancecoveragearrangedforbyArtianabyanyoftheir insuranceproviders,Artianashallnotentertainanydirectclaimsfor damageorlossduringshippingandtransitandthese wouldhaveto bedirectedtosuchinsuranceproviders; Subjecttotheauthenticity guaranteeabove, neither Artiana’ssuppliersnor Artiana, noranyof Artiana’semployeesoragents, shallbe responsible, eitherforthe correctnessofanystatementsastotheauthorship, origin, date, age, attributesorgenuinenessofanyPropertyinthesale, orforany mistakesintheDescription, orforanyfaultsordefectsinthe Properties, orforanyotheractoromission, whatsoever Artianaoffers noguaranteeorwarrantyotherthanthelimitedassurancecontained intheauthenticityguaranteeabove.
5.2. Itisstatedandagreedthatthe rescissionofthesaleandthe refundofthetotalSalePricepaid bytheBuyeristhesole remedy thatmaybesought byaBuyer, andsuch remedyisexclusiveandin lieuofanyother remedywhichmayotherwisebe availableunderlaw. Noimage, illustrationorwrittenmaterialmaybeusedor requiredwithoutthepriorwrittenpermissionofArtiana Artianaand theSeller(s)makeno representationor warrantythattheBuyerofa Propertywillacquireanycopyrightorother reproduction rightsinit.
7.1. Artianamay validlyservetheBidder/Buyerwithlegalnotice, if required, undertheseConditionsofSale by:
•SendinganemailtotheemailaddressdisclosedbytheBidder/ Buyerto Artiana; or
•SendingacouriertotheaddressdisclosedbytheBidder/Buyer toArtiana.
7.2. Suchlegalnoticeshallbedeemedtohavebeenproperlyserved:

Artianaguaranteestheauthenticityoftheartworkforaperiodofsixmonthsfromtheauctionclosingdate Authenticityin relationtoartworks shallmeancomplianceoftheartworkwiththedescriptionprovidedonthe website, particularlywith referencetothenameoftheartist, title(if any)oftheartworkitself, date, theschoolofart(ifmentioned), dimensions, mediumetc.
Intheunlikely eventthatwithinsixmonthsfromthecloseofanauction, itisproved bythe buyertothe reasonablesatisfactionof Artianathatthe item wasnotauthenticandif, in Artiana’sopinion, this wouldhavesignificantlyimpactedthepricea buyer wouldhavebeenwillingtopayforthe item,Artianashallbeentitledto rescindthesale, andthesellerwillbeliableto refundtothe buyerthepricepaidfortheitem.
