EMPOWERMENT AND MEANING FOR ULTRA HIGH NET WORTH FAMILIES By Eric Peterson

U

ltra high net worth families have needs that differ from that of a typical family. Multigenerational wealth brings with it challenges and a need for information that is unique, and similarly, opportunities that are compelling, for all generations. At the same time, some wealthy families have observed that they may face certain challenges due to lives that may be abundant in the privilege that provides a comfortable life and extraordinary opportunity, but may be lacking in the struggle and sacrifice that some believe is essential to motivate later generations to work hard, invest in themselves, and succeed. Wealth education is essential for ultra high net worth families, not only so that they may learn more about financial management, but also so that they build on the existing family ethos in order to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. It can be a powerful tool for family members to learn to communicate more effectively with one other about their values, hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Wealth education can benefit family members of all ages, whether they are next generation descendants, spouses, or the family wealth creator. It is a form of empowerment for the individual, but also a way to engender meaning for the family by exploring and deepening legacy and further contributing to the store of the family’s intellectual capital and development of their shared values. Simply put, family wealth education helps ultra high net worth families strive to maximize the value of their human capital by making it more likely that all members of the family will have the foundation to lead meaningful, fulfilled and engaged lives.

Shared Language and Understanding

expression tends to be emotional and subjective and not always logical and rational, and thus open to vast interpretation, and confusion or misunderstanding. Additionally, managing substantial multigenerational wealth can also become complicated and intricate given the issues around investing, tax management, legacy planning, and philanthropy. The responsibilities of managing great wealth are frequently complex and can seem awesome and even overwhelming. Wealth education can provide a common language, skills development, and understanding for all family members to understand, and discuss, the complex and varied financial issues that ultra high net worth families often face.

What is Wealth Education? Wealth education is a broad term, and can include everything from education and learning around personal finance and the tools for building a foundation in basic financial management, to more complex concepts of investing, to issues around family governance and philanthropy. The ARC Family Wealth Education (FWE) program covers Personal Finance, Investing, Career Development and Entrepreneurship, Family Business Ownership, Philanthropy, and Family Governance. These are areas that ultra high net worth family members may need to understand if they are to manage generational wealth and become effective stewards. The teaching strategy for the FWE program relies on a diverse set of methods to engage the family member and promote mastery. The educational approach includes assessments, discussion, experiential learning, workbooks, and eventually, a digital component. The program involves the creation of an entirely individualized curriculum for each ultra high net worth family based on their goals and aspirations, existing knowledge base and learning style, with a variety of learning connections leading to engagement, and understanding.

Wealth education can help a family learn, develop, and share a common language to discuss complex, and even difficult, family money topics. Education can teach and provide a language that helps us understand each other, and that helps us understand our money, and the connections between that wealth and the challenges and opportunities we face.

Wealth education can be a powerful resource for family members to manage more effectively the responsibility and opportunity that comes with possessing and stewarding substantial wealth. With financial understanding, and a grasp of the opportunities and responsibilities that wealth entails, comes confidence and success in managing, growing, and preserving financial and human capital for many generations to come.

Money can be a very emotional area, which makes communication around it that much more difficult. Money can fuel feelings of anxiety or joy, success or worthlessness, confusion or empowerment, or some combination of these and other emotions. The way that we spend money can also be an expression of an individual, or family, value system. This

Resident FEATURE

The Valentines:

A CELEBRATION OF DIVERSITY By Melissa McKenzie

A

therton is a community built on diversity with each resident having a unique background and set of interests. The town is composed of both young families and senior citizens with deep roots in the area, and people of various ethnicities and religious beliefs who largely contribute to Atherton’s vibrant community. Take Atherton residents Bill and Euni Valentine who bought their home in 2008 when Euni was eight months pregnant with their first daughter, Livia. Bill grew up on a cattle ranch in Shasta Valley, California. His early memories include practicing for rodeos, feeding cattle in the snow, and learning about the outdoors in general. Bill’s father, who came from a wealthy Southern California oil family, attended Stanford, became a survival instructor in the Air Force and taught escape and evasion in the Sierras and in Germany. He instilled in his three sons a love of nature. Bill, the middle son, inherited much of his father’s passion for the outdoors, including fly fishing and duck hunting. Bill’s first successful duck hunt remains one of his favorite childhood memories. “I was eight years old and in a duck blind with my Dad. It was stormy and dark with snow and wind blowing around us. I saw a group of Redheads zipping by from right to left. I fired at the lead bird and one of the ducks in the back dropped. My Dad was slapping me on the back, excitedly exclaiming good shot … good shot. Being out in that storm, hunting with my Dad – whom I really adored – was just the best. I was so proud.”

Christmas in Korea with Halaboji (Grandpa, in Korean)

Growing up, Bill attended a two room schoolhouse, grades 1-4 in one room and 5-8 in the other, with a single teacher in each classroom. Bill’s mother, also a Stanford grad, was (and remains) an avid learner and

educator and essentially home schooled the boys until they were sent off to boarding school at Robert Louis Stevenson School in Pebble Beach. Bill is a fifth generation Californian with roots dating back to the Gold Rush and a fourth generation Stanford University graduate. But unusually for a Stanford student, Bill took a detour during college into crab and salmon fishing in Alaska for almost half a decade. “When I was at Stanford, a group of the boys went up to Alaska for the summer and worked on crab and salmon boats to earn some extra money,” he says. “I went up after my junior year and stayed for almost five years.” Even though Euni laughs at having heard all of Bill’s crab fishing stories numerous times over the years, there is one that sticks out in her mind as a heart-thumping tale that to this day gives her anxiety when he tells it. “When he was working on his first crab boat out in the middle of the Bering Sea, a large wave tipped the boat up in the air, throwing him over the side, down 20 feet and into the freezing water without a life vest,” she says. “No one saw him fall in and no one could hear him screaming as the hydraulics on a crab boat are very loud. With the 35 degree water temperature, he had at most a few minutes before his muscles would seize up and he would lose use of his limbs. As the boat motored on, he managed to grab hold of the boat’s deck hose which was hanging down the side and clung on to it until the boat slowed down and the hydraulics were turned off. At that point, one of Bill’s mates who was on the lower deck happened to look out the porthole and to his horror, saw Bill in the water, holding on to the deck hose. He ran up to the deck and with all his adrenaline-charged might, managed to pull the hose and Bill out of the water and over the four foot hand rail as if Bill weighed nothing.” After putting his crab fishing days behind him, Bill came back to the Bay Area, graduated from Stanford and started working in commercial Continued on page 10. His career path took him briefly to New York where he completed a Real Estate Master’s program at Columbia University but he soon after returned to California where his roots lay. After a brief stint working in Manhattan, Bill returned to California to start a mortgage bank with his graduate school finance professor. That led to a 20 year career financing income properties at various firms. More recently, Bill ventured out on his own and is now the owner of his own company, Vale Capital, a Menlo Park-based private lender specializing in real estate secured bridge and construction loans. “This is a great business. Every deal is different. We move quickly to provide value-added capital to a pool of capable, financially strong real estate entrepreneurs seeking reliability and efficiency.” When asked how he competes with bank financing, Bill explains that “we fund much more quickly and efficiently than a bank which often takes several months to process a loan.” Bill enjoys getting to know the borrowers and helping them achieve their goals. His clients range from a gas station owner in Dixon who lost his property after the 2008 recession to a high net worth businesswoman with an investment in Nevada real estate who needed short-term liquidity while assets were being sold. “It’s a win-win for our borrowers who get fast and efficient funding and for our investors who get attractive current yields on their Ellie’s first on-stage ballet performance.

investment,” says Bill who has found that he is providing a much needed service. “We have the luxury of being selective about the deals that we fund and while we’re driven to take care of our borrowers, our primary responsibility is to protect our investors’ capital. We do this in part by investing personally in every loan, usually in a first loss position.” Bill explains that “investors are craving yield in this market and we’re able to offer them high single digit yields protected by strong, well-secured real estate.” In contrast to Bill’s California roots, Euni is the daughter of a Korean diplomat and grew up traveling and living all over the world, including living in in England, Switzerland, Thailand and Belgium. Euni’s father was born into a rural gentry family who had their land confiscated by the Japanese during their colonial occupation of Korea. He overcame many obstacles - including walking 100 miles from the Southern part of Korea to Seoul to attend Seoul National Prep School - and eventually joined the Foreign Service. “I grew up moving to a new country every 2-3 years,” explains Euni. “It was a wonderful experience and I learned to truly appreciate and enjoy the diversity of all the different countries in which I lived.” Although her parents intended for Euni to marry into a traditional Korean family and become “a well-trained mother and housewife,” she had other plans. After graduating from Stanford – where she and Bill first met - she went to Columbia Law School and worked as a corporate attorney for a few years in New York and then in Korea. “It turned out that law was not my cup of tea,” she says, “so I moved into investment banking” – a successful career she maintained for 15 years with Lehman Brothers and UBS Warburg. For 12 years of those years, she lived in London and it was during this time that she sailed competitively and raced historic motor cars. “My first vintage car race was in a 1963 Lotus 23 at Castle Combe in England,” she says, adding that she has raced on the circuits in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Spain. Eventually, Euni’s job gave her the opportunity to transfer with UBS Warburg to its Los Angeles office where she reconnected with Bill who was living in Santa Monica at that time. They were soon married and Euni decided to “retire” to have children and raise a family. “Having my first child in my 40s was the most amazing achievement of my life,” says Euni. “While we are totally out of sync with our peers, one of the wonderful advantages of late-stage parenthood is that we have the emotional and intellectual wherewithal to be fully focused on enjoying raising our children, something that I absolutely could not have done while I was working 24/7 in investment banking. We are blessed with the two most wonderful daughters in the world.” Eight-and-a-half-year-old Livia is an avid reader who is currently engrossed in reading the Harry Potter series (just starting book 6), is the lead singer in a rock band that has performed at the Riekes Center and Off the Grid in Menlo Park (songs include Riptide by Vance Joy, Seven Nation Army by White Stripes, Drag Me Down by One Direction), rides horses, loves gymnastics and has a flair for art. In the fall, she will be entering fourth grade at Synapse School, a relatively new progressive K-8 school in Menlo Park. She also has a deep compassion for animals, says Euni, especially Chase Jr, the family’s 7 pound Maltese mix, Bogey,

pictures her younger daughter spinning through the living room in her tutu. "I'm grateful that our daughters have my love of music,” says Bill. “Without them, Euni would still be stuck listening to Free Bird,” he jokes. Ellie will be entering Kindergarten at Synapse School in the fall. Livia and Ellie are well-traveled, visiting their maternal grandparents in Korea once or twice a year since birth. They have been diligently taking Korean classes so that they can speak in Korean when they go to Seoul. “They love visiting Korea, seeing all the sights and learning about the culture and history,” says Euni. It’s important to both Bill and Euni that their daughters are fully bi-cultural.

a black Labrador retriever that Bill takes hunting, and Lucy, the family’s well-adjusted calico cat. Ellie, almost five years old, is a talented ballerina, first performing on stage at the Woodside Theatre when she was only three-and-a-half years old. She loves all kinds of music and dance and also has shown an aptitude in art. “If you turn on the music, chances are that Ellie will be up and dancing and singing along,” says Euni, smiling as she

In talking about how they have found living in Atherton, “I love the diversity of this neighborhood, which has an open, welcoming community” says Euni. “We’ve become good friends with many of our close by neighbors and are friendly with all of the surrounding neighbors.” For Bill, he notes that Atherton is a very connected, close knit and active community. “It was one of my Atherton neighbors who helped rekindle my interest in starting my own private lending business and the timing was just right,” says Bill. “It was also through neighbors that I’ve become involved in T4GS, a non-profit that seeks to use technology to help create a safer world, and ADAPT (Atherton Disaster And Preparedness Team). As Athertonians, we can reach out to each other as a community and the connections can produce results.” It’s a wonderful place to live. ■

ICONIC MODERN SILICON VALLEY RESIDENCE IN LOS ALTOS HILLS $18,000,000 “I looked at the first sketch Swatt-Miers showed me and said, “That’s the house I want!” said Luxury Home Developer, Melvin Vaughn of Vaughn-House and of some of the more noted estates in the area, of the original concept for the three-story dwelling, modeling its sculptural massing of rectilinear forms and astonishing Architecture. “Starchitect” Robert Swatt of the renowned Swatt-Miers Architects, in turn, translated that vision into nuts-and-bolts reality, collaborating closely with designer Connie Wong whose inspiration included materials as well as lighting for the main house, the state of art theater, Bedroom Suites, Wine Cellar, Bar and entertaining spaces, guest house and pool deck and other interior and exterior spaces. Add to this formidable roster of talent a battalion of artisans, contractors, engineers, consultants and high end furnishing from DZINE of San Francisco, and one begins to fully grasp the ambition of the undertaking.

much, he continued making them. Many of his mixed media pieces also contain a heart, including his favorite piece, “The Journey,” where four figures are standing on an inverted triangle. The heart in that piece is not pronounced, as it lays on its side, encased in a bubble. Bob says it’s an interpretation of everyone’s journey in life. According to him, each of the four figures – one pushing forward, one turning back, one helping another up and one facing the world - is a representation of a stage in life. “That’s the journey,” he says. “You fall down and you have to get up and then you fall down again. You don't just fall once. It's about falling down and getting back up. The whole world going around and doing whatever it's going to do, and you don't have any control over that, but you have some control over whether you get up."

piece on the campus of Santa Clara University. And, while many artists begin a specific career path, realizing later they only want to create, Bob knew as a young child he wanted to be an artist and decided to pursue art as a career in junior high. Bob says, at that time, people constantly told him he needed a fall back career, but he refused to change his mind. “If I want to be at peace with myself, I have to make art,” he says. “I’m an artist … If I can’t make it as an artist then I’m not falling back on anything.” Until 2010, Bob painted in primary colors, but after seeing a Lynn Powers show at Santa Clara’s Triton Museum of Art and meeting the artist, he changed his outlook on painting and began incorporating additional paint colors into his heart pieces. Even though he’s quick to say he doesn’t consider himself a painter, Bob says he wants his art to be multifaceted. “I just want to make stuff,” he says. “I don’t want to compare myself to Picasso, but I want to be like that and get up in the morning and say ‘I think I’ll work with clay today’ … and then the next day say, ‘I want to paint.’ Then the next LUNCH day do something different. I Monday – Friday don’t make art to fit in. I make DINNER it because I don’t fit in, and it’s Monday – Saturday not going to make me fit in, Private dining rooms available but it makes it easier to live with myself. It helps me live.” Visit www.robertjknight.com/ to see more of Bob’s work or to www.johnbentleys.com contact the artist. ■

orking in the design industry, we are privileged to see new trends roll out and implement them in new spaces. The latest style that’s made its way into kitchen and bath design is “gold, black and white”. We are crazy about it! Nothing screams Atherton Sophistication like this design movement. Characteristics of this trend focus on warm color tones combined with simple shapes and interesting patterns. Soft brass metals with contrasting finishes in tile, cabinetry and countertops are key. And for additional drama, details like a unique wallpaper will intensify the effects. By incorporating soft finishes with clean and concise lines, what you get is a glamorous space that feels elegant, sleek and timeless. We carry many faucet and furniture manufacturers that are leading this design trend. Companies like Brizo, Samuel Heath, Rohl, Watermark and California Faucets are releasing products in polished or satin gold finishes. Combining this with rich marble countertops and walnut cabinetry from specialty craftsmen like The Furniture Guild, you are guaranteed to make this a reality in your home. Modern-day glamour is a trend to watch. We invite you to make an appointment to visit our showroom and see the newest products to hit the market! rom the catalog: “Sotheby’s is very pleased to announce the inaugural Space Explorationthemed auction, the first since the groundbreaking Russian Space History sales of the 1990s. The only such relic available for private ownership, it is exceptionally rare.”

Winning Love Through

Feng Shui

By David Marin

By Master Woody Chan

For those of you who want to win the love from others easier, here are the best Feng Shui techniques:

1. If you are the male owner of the house, place your dreamed lady’s picture on the northwest corner of your home and bedroom. 2. If you are the female owner of the house, place your ideal guy’s picture on the southwest corner of your home and bedroom. 3. Find out your dreamed person’s sign (Chinese Zodiac). If he/she is a. Snake, rooster or ox, focus on the fire treatment. Sending a red color heart shape gift or having a candle light dinner together will melt the heart. b. Pig, rabbit or goat, focus on the water treatment. Having a romantic beach walk or taking on a relaxing cruise line vacation can dissolve the barrier. c. Tiger, horse or dog, focus on the wood treatment. Bringing gorgeous flowers or hiking in Big Basin trails will ignite the passion. d. Monkey, rat or dragon, focus on the metal treatment. Inviting for a great concert or having a Europe trip will fence in the love. 4. If you were born in the year of goat (1967,1979, 1991) or ox (1961, 1973, 1985), you have the top people relationship and marriage luck in 2016. Go full force in pursuing your love because the most auspicious stars are shining upon you. 5. If you were born in the year of monkey (1968,1980,1992) or tiger (1962,1974, 1986), your luck will be bad in 2016. It is likely for you to create a joyful event such as marriage to kill off the bad fortune. At least try to enjoy your own wedding. 6. In 2016, the #9 people relationship purple star lands on the east space. East is the direction for the eldest son, who will enjoy superior people relationship luck in 2016. If you are not the elder son of the family, you can still take advantage of this star by occupying the east room and placing 9 red roses in the east corner of your room, home or office. The Lupus Foundation of Northern California PROVIDES PATIENT EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH By Melissa McKenzie

W

hile some diseases are easy to see in those afflicted, others don’t manifest in measurable ways. You can’t look at someone and know they suffer from diabetes, arthritis or fibromyalgia. Still, even some of these silent diseases, like lupus, for example, are not only difficult to treat but can go undiagnosed for years, leading sufferers to feel frustrated and often depressed. Sufferers of lupus, an autoimmune disease, take an average of six years to receive a diagnosis, and within that time the average person sees a minimum of four doctors and obtains multiple incorrect treatment plans that focus on only one manifestation of the illness. Many individuals are unable to maintain employment due to symptoms ranging from extreme fatigue and crippling joint pain to a compromised immune system and poor mental health. Organizations like the Lupus Foundation of Northern California aim to bridge the gap between life with and life without lupus. Since 1978, LFNC has focused on programs to educate those living with the disease and their loved ones. The non-profit also engages in advocacy and lobbying to ensure adequate funding is allotted to research that will result in a cure.

“Lupus patients tell us time and time again that the most important thing in their daily fight is the hope that they are not along in their battle,” said Executive Director Erin Badillo. Through speaker series, new patient education classes, community outreach programs, speaking engagements, a #lupus101 series and social events, LFNC continually pushes toward deepening the public’s understanding of a misunderstood disease. “Recently we started our #lupus101 series, a combination of live and in person events that promote awareness among the community and provide education for those living with lupus,” said volunteer social media coordinator and patient educator Christine Von Raesfeld, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2002. “These have included live online Facebook sessions with rheumatologists from Stanford Hospital and an in person make-up class at Westfield Valley Fair's Sephora. We recognize the need for patients to connect in various ways and try to accommodate those needs.” LFNC operates on a small paid staff of three and a host of volunteers who donate time as their health permits. Recently, a small group of advocates visited Washington, D.C. and met with members of Congress to further the organization’s mission. They arrived with three asks: healthcare reform, including ensuring pre-existing conditions do not hinder individuals Lupus advocates visit Sacramento from obtaining healthcare, low-income based government assistance for those on disability, continuing protections against lifetime caps on healthcare, planning to include prevention and wellness activities for those at risk for chronic diseases, avoiding discriminatory practices within the open healthcare market and eliminating racial disparities in chronic diseases; supporting a

P

eriods of extremely hot weather--heat waves--can cause serious health problems for everyone, but the most vulnerable people are older people, especially over 75 years, babies and young children, people with serious chronic conditions, people with mobility problems, people with serious mental health problems, people on certain medications, people who misuse alcohol or drugs, and people who are physically active. The most common heat-related conditions are heat exhaustion and heatstroke; they are also the most serious. Heat exhaustion means your body is overheating. It is the result of prolonged perspiration and loss of large quantities of salt and water. It occurs most often in hot, humid weather, when adequate fluids are not replaced (common in older adults who have a diminished thirst mechanism despite dehydration). This can occur either indoors or outdoors, with or without exercise. Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include nausea, cold and clammy skin, heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, shallow breathing, abdominal cramps, and muscle tremors. Mental disorientation and brief loss of consciousness may also occur. If you are concerned that someone may be experiencing the symptoms, make him lie down with his feet 8 to 12 inches higher than his head, and sponge him off with a cool, wet cloth. If possible, move him to an air-conditioned environment; if you are outside, move him to a shady spot. Loosen his clothing to allow the circulation of air to cool the body. If his symptoms worsen or last longer than one hour, seek medical help. If left untreated, heat exhaustion may progress to heatstroke. Heatstroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails and the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106º F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. The most common cause of heatstroke is vigorous physical activity in a hot, humid environment. Heatstroke can also result from overexposure to direct sunlight, with or without physical activity, or to very high indoor temperatures. It can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Symptoms include an extremely high body temperature; red, hot and dry skin; no visible perspiration; fast, strong pulse that may slow and weaken as the blood pressure drops; throbbing headache; dry mouth; vertigo; nausea; confusion; and unconsciousness. If symptoms of heatstroke are present, find a cool place; if outside, find a spot in the shade. The victim should be undressed (retaining undergarments only) and his bare skin should be cooled with cold water or ice compresses. Place cold packs around the neck, under the arms, and around the ankles to cool the blood in the main arteries. Use a fan or air conditioner if available. Continue the treatment until the temperature falls below 100ºF and check it every 10 or 15 minutes to ensure that it does not rise again. Obtain medical assistance.

Follow these tips: drink plenty of water; wear cool, light-colored clothes even if you don't feel hot; cover sunny windows with drapes or awnings; and use air conditioning, if possible. Avoid hot foods and heavy meals—they add heat to your body. Limit outdoor activities; try to plan activities for the coolest times of the day--before 10 and after 6 p.m. When spending time outdoors, wear a hat and use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) greater than 15 to protect yourself against sunburn. During extreme heat conditions, listen out for health and safety updates on the radio or TV. ■

A view of the vineyards at Kings Mountain Vineyards during the summer.

KINGS MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS:

Taste the History By Laura Ness, Wine Journalist

O

n a bucolic and private 50-acre gated estate that has existed just outside the town of Woodside since the 1880s, sits a beautiful one-acre vineyard nestled between redwood groves, on the eastern side of the coastal hills. Meticulously hand-tended, dry-farmed and sustainably maintained to the highest possible standards, these 520 vines on a quadrilateral cordon-trained, open lyre trellis, are the source for all the wines produced under the Kings Mountain Vineyards label. Only 400 cases are made annually. Planted in 1992, the vineyard once produced both Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties, but was entirely grafted to Pinot Noir in 2009. Each year, the wines are made in the same fashion. Only new French oak is used for aging, and the wines are never filtered or fined. Two clones of Pinot are planted here: Clone 13, also called Martini, a heritage clone known for its alluring mix of earth, herbs and spice, and Clone 667, a newer Dijon clone, delivering dark cherry, ripe raspberry and blackberry flavors. Kings Mountain Vineyards currently produces two versions of Pinot Noir: the Reserve, which is 100% Martini/Clone 13 and the “Bacchus,” which is approximately two-thirds Martini/Clone 13 and one-third Clone 667. The differences are remarkable. The Clone 13 Reserve is decidedly more “old world” in its initial restraint, yet possessing profound depth, flawless length and soaring elegance. Bolder and more fruit forward, the Bacchus is a sunny style of California Pinot with universal appeal. On the Reserve label, you will notice a magnificent theater: it was built by the second owner to accommodate his Hollywood guests who entertained one another in its lavishly decorated interior that boasts artifacts and renderings of antiquities from Greco-Roman times. The Bacchus label bears the countenance of the ancient god of wine and merriment himself. His likeness appears in a giant stone sculpture on the property, near the vineyard, adjacent to where the lion cage once stood. Yes, this place holds many stories. The vines that produce these wines are located within the Skyline subregion of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. This area can experience dramatic temperature variations, with frequent evening maritime fog during the summer that brings cold coastal air to chill the warm afternoons. It’s one of the coolest microclimates in Kings Mountain Vineyards are located in nearby Woodside.

The lineup of Kings Mountain Vineyard wines.

California, making it ideal for growing grapes. Santa Cruz Mountains wines are distinctive in their earthy, forest floor attributes, along with abundant minerality. This is especially pronounced in the Pinot Noirs, which exhibit complexity and abundant acidity, ensuring graceful maturation. The Skyline subregion Pinots are prized for zesty acidity, bright lively red cherry, cranberry, guava, cocoa, allspice, orange peel and intriguing herbaceousness. Woodside is also part of the Chaine d’Or, or chain of gold: since the mid 19th century, a series of small vineyards here consistently produced gold medal wines. Kings Mountain Vineyards continues to uphold that gold-medal winning tradition. The current vintage showed well at the 2017 California State Fair, with the 2012 Bacchus taking Gold, 95 points and Best of Class of Region, and the 2012 Clone 13 scoring Silver, with 91 points. Since Kings Mountain Vineyards is a private estate, the winery has no formal tasting room and is only open for special wine club events. Fortunately for oenophiles lacking cellars in which to properly age wines, the folks at Kings Mountain have done it for you. Their wine club enables members to receive allocations of current vintages as well as access to library wines, with flawlessly aged examples dating back to 2002. At the recently held Silicon Valley Wine Auction, a five-case auction lot of library wines from Kings Mountain Vineyards sold for $22k! Fortunately, you don’t have to pay that much to get your hands on some. The Pinots are priced at $65, and the Meritage at $60. ■

CURRENT RELEASES The current—and final—Meritage blend from this vineyard, vintage 2008, is made from all five Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. “Meritage” is a fancy word designating that the wine is a Bordeaux blend. This handsome wine is perfectly aged and drinking beautifully now, with dark olives, capers, pine, black pepper, blackberry truffles and an intense chocolatey mouthfeel. The 2012 Clone 13 Pinot Noir is a slice of Burgundy, packed with cranberry, raspberry, orange zest, fern, cinnamon and dark tea, with many chapters yet to be revealed. The 2012 Bacchus Pinot Noir is immediately accessible and juicy ripe, lush with dark cherry, cocoa and allspice. Sign up for the mailing list to be invited to private tastings, which occur twice yearly in the spectacular vineyards: kingsmountainvineyards.com

Travel:

DON’T SETTLE FOR AN ISLAND RESORT, BOOK THE ENTIRE ISLAND By Melissa McKenzie

A

lthough planning a family vacation or exciting trip for two can be fun, putting together an exclusive getaway is much more difficult. Visiting theme parks and traditional locales on breaks is often more exhausting, with lines and crowds sometimes sucking the excitement out of a trip.

Traveling during off-times can help – visiting beach resorts in the winter or smaller ski resorts (even though many cater to outdoor, warm weather activities) in the summer, but for those who truly want their time away to be like nothing else on the planet, there’s one place to go – Makepeace Island. Makepeace Island, the Australian home of Sir Richard Branson, is a sanctuary of seclusion upstream from Noosa on Queensland, Australia’s Sunshine Coast. While there are island experiences that only allow small groups of patrons, Makepeace is completely different. The island is offered on a sole use booking basis, meaning those traveling alone, honeymooners or family reunion attendees will be the only guests on the island for the duration of the trip. Accommodations are open to as few as one and as many as 20 all for the cost of $5,550 per night for up to four guests with a two night minimum stay (additional guests are charged $600 per person per night). Only three villas occupy the property. Each contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, separate lounge area, deck, stocked bar, Nespresso coffee, air conditioning, fans, heating, work desk with WiFi access and evening turndown service, among other amenities and guests are given the exclusive use of Branson’s island. Island use includes: tailored experiences designed specifically for the booking party and their guests; non-alcoholic beverages and daily menus designed by the island’s executive chef, Lisa Mahar; transfers from Noosa or Maroochydore Airports to Noosa Marina on arrival and departure; river transfers between Makepeace Island and Noose Marina, Lake Cooroibah, North Shore beaches and Noosa Heads; a unique sunset lake ‘cruise’ on Makepeace’s ‘aircraft carrier’ barge each stay and use of all island facilities. On the island, guests have access to the lagoon pool - the property’s centerpiece with a water feature, dive sports and 15 person heated spa, island bar; a game room with a selection of musical instruments and open air balcony for dining; relaxation wantilan – a large, two-story structure overlooking the river; outdoor activities – complete with three Hobie Cats, two stand up paddle boards and four kayaks; fishing; all-weather grass tennis court; island walking Makepeace Island’s Wantilan Lounge Photo property of Makepeace Island

Off island adventures can also be arranged by the Makepeace Island team, all with a focus on the Sunshine Coast. Options range from chopper tours and transfers (complete with a lunch packed by the island’s chef) to trips to the Great Barrier Reef, Four Wheel Drive beach adventures (with a gourmet lunch), dolphin experiences, river fishing, beach horseback riding, the Australia Zoo, deep sea fishing and whale watching, golf at one of five Sunshine Coast golf courses, diving, surf lessons, onsite spa treatments with therapists who will meet your needs (offsite arrangements are made for specialized sessions) and on- oroffsite yoga.
