The business designs and makes high quality furniture and fittings, specialising in bespoke commissions. It is also known for its extensive collection of historical furniture designs which can be reproduced with complete authenticity to sit comfortably alongside period originals. BESPOKE SERVICE Much of Arthur Brett’s production is for bespoke commissions; either an adaptation of an archive design or a completely new piece of furniture created by our experienced designers working to a client’s instruction. Our construction methods remain largely unchanged from the mid-19th century, except where technology can help us create even better results, and we pride ourselves in paying attention to the smallest detail and working closely with the client to ensure complete satisfaction.

OUR CLIENTS Arthur Brett has earned a worldwide reputation for making furniture of unrivalled quality. Our pieces can be found in public and government buildings, palaces, yachts, boardrooms, hotels and luxury homes around the world. Whilst we don’t overtly brand our furniture, the lasting quality of an Arthur Brett piece is instantly recognisable to the practised eye, and has long been acknowledged as being without rival in terms of authenticity, build quality and finish. From our London showroom we cater to both design professionals and private clients with a wide selection of our finest creations on display. Accustomed to working on prestigious projects worldwide, Arthur Brett is pleased to assure total client confidentiality.

TRADITIONAL Arthur Brett prides itself on manufacturing ‘museum quality’ furniture spanning a range of styles from the 17th century to the modern day. We still make furniture by hand, using the tried and tested techniques that make our furniture often indistinguishable from period originals. From our vast archive of historic designs we can replicate precisely or adapt a design to suit a client’s style or size requirements.

CONTEMPORARY Contemporary furniture commissions are a regular part of Arthur Brett’s work and often come from past clients of traditional furniture who expect the same high standards in their contemporary pieces. The company’s strengths in this area are illustrated by a regular programme of new collection launches. These often draw on our period archives for design inspiration, but feature materials and finishes suited to modern interiors.

CORPORATE Arthur Brett has long been recognised as the UK’s premium supplier of fine quality boardroom and executive office furniture. Our archives contain numerous classical desk and cabinet designs which are often combined with panelled and shelved walls to create the ultimate corporate environment. We work with our clients to ensure that their furniture is fitted with all of the requisite functionality, from charging sockets and network cabling to concealed display monitors. Increasingly we work with more contemporary finishes to produce striking new desk and cabinet designs that are better suited to modern commercial environments.

With business associations lasting many decades, the Arthur Brett name has long been synonymous with the finest quality boardroom and executive office furniture. Bespoke table for GCC Bahrain

RESIDENTIAL Furniture for high quality residential projects forms the backbone of Arthur Brett’s work. It is also the most diverse of applications for our furniture as we meet the demands of an international clientele. Our global perspective enriches our creativity and our designers are immensely flexible in their capabilities and recommendations. Arthur Brett is rightly regarded as being at the pinnacle of authentic period-style furniture creation with a large collection of designs spanning several style eras. The skills used to create period designs, however, are eminently transferable to more contemporary styles and materials. This has resulted in a natural progression of creative style and expertise from the purely traditional to more classically inspired yet highly functional furniture.

A typical commission may range from something as diverse as a modern and stylish trestle desk in exotic veneers to a Georgian-style mahogany extending dining table with chairs to seat 20 guests.

HOTELS The development or refurbishment of a luxury hotel takes a considerable amount of detailed planning and requires careful implementation. Arthur Brett’s designers are well versed in responding to client briefs and helping devise solutions to the constraints of space, time and budget. Our furniture primarily features in suites and public areas, and includes items such as dining chairs and tables, serving tables, centre tables and custom-built reception desks and counters.

Over many decades, Arthur Brett has contributed to the furnishing of some of London and the world’s best known clubs, restaurants and hotels.

YACHTS The specific requirements for sea-going furniture have provided Arthur Brett with many interesting challenges over the years. From period-style motor launches to the very latest superyachts, we have experience in designing and making the furniture to suit, whether it be a custom bed to fit a curved bulkhead, or bookcases with simple retaining bars.

For some applications we use high gloss polyurethane finishes on more unusual veneers to create durable contemporary finishes.

FINISHES Arthur Brett works in a variety of traditional and contemporary materials. Our furniture is centred largely around wood and illustrates the amazing variety of textures and colours available in this medium. With a focus on the woods traditionally used throughout the various design periods such as walnut and mahogany, the company also works with less common native timbers such as rosewood, maple, sycamore and elm. Increasingly, we use a number of unusual and exotic veneers such as santos rosewood, maccassar ebony, amboyna and thuya burrs. Many of these less traditional timbers can be finished in such a way as to create highly contemporary finishes. The company still polishes mainly by hand using the ageold French polishing technique and the Arthur Brett name has come to be associated with this authentic soft-sheen finish. For more durable or modern finishes however, we may use a polyurethane spray technique, and we are constantly experimenting to create new and exciting contemporary finishes.

Arthur Brett works not only with timber finishes but with gold and silver leaf and a vast array of metals, stones and glass.

Arthur Brett 1868 - 1952

The Arthur Brett business traces its origins to John Brett, a chair maker born in Norfolk in 1815. His son, Jonathan, followed in his father’s footsteps and with his six sons established a thriving manufacturing and retail business in Norwich and across East Anglia. Jonathan’s third son Arthur was instrumental in growing the company substantially, with workshops and showrooms in Norwich and a showroom in London’s Fitzroy Square. Subsequent generations of the Brett family have contributed towards the success of what is believed to be the oldest extant English furniture making company, with a history in excess of 150 years. Still based in Norwich, the company continues to rely on a highly skilled and dedicated workforce who are proud of the Arthur Brett name - a name that is now recognised worldwide and has become synonymous with the very best in hand-made English furniture.
