Since 2010, the David McCune International Art Gallery at Methodist University has been Fayetteville, North Carolina’s premier art venue, where traveling exhibitions, fine art on loan from collections throughout the world, and work by Methodist University students are displayed. Free parking including handicapped parking is available and the facility is wheelchair accessible. Three of the gallery’s recent shows were Igneous Expressions, a collection of glass art by twenty-six western North Carolina artists including work by Harvey Littleton, considered the father of Amer-
ican studio glass; Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics from the Rosenbaum Collection, a selection of 40 plates, bowls, pitchers, vases, and plaques created in Vallauris, France; and Testament, a collection of photographs and writing by the award winning photojournalist Chris Hondros that document coverage of military conflicts in Kosovo, Afghanistan, the West Bank, Iraq, Liberia, Egypt, and Libya. Beginning in spring 2016, the gallery will host a traveling exhibition made available through the generosity of the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, which provides philanthropic leadership in medicine and the arts, with a special focus on the work of the sculptor Auguste Rodin and his contemporaries. During the last four decades, more than ten million visitors throughout the world have viewed work that the Foundation has loaned. The upcoming exhibition is entitled Rodin: Portraits of a Lifetime. It features seven-

teen works in bronze by Rodin, including depictions of Victor Hugo, Honore de Balzac, Gustav Mahler, Claude Lorrain, Chilean General Lynch Solo de Zaldivar, and Pope Benedict XV as well as portraits of Rodin by Edward Steichen, John Tweed, and Paul Paulin. The show also includes many of Rodin’s most admired pieces— from an early bust of his father to his Mask of the Man with the Broken Nose, critically-praised works that span Rodin’s long career and demonstrate his remarkable legacy in sculpture. The gallery will offer guided “touch tours” to allow visually impaired visitors to experience some of the sculptures—texture, shape, angle, size, and volume—with their hands. With spoken descriptions offered by trained docents and gloves provided by the gallery, visitors will experience the tactile nuances of Rodin’s work. Gallery staff will extend special invitations to K-12 school groups and to organizations serving the visually impaired.
The exhibition opens on February 11th, 2016, with a reception at 6:00 PM and a lecture at 7:00 PM by Judith Sobol, Executive Director of the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, and runs until May 7th. Gallery hours are 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM Thursdays, and noon to 4:00 PM Saturdays. The Gallery will be closed Sundays, Mondays, and March 25th and 26th. Admission to the Rodin exhibition is free.

Elder Gallery Celebrating 15 years In Charlotte, NC we sat down with Larry Elder of Elder Gallery to discuss the 15th anniversary of his gallery. Bringing together reknowned artists from around the country, Elder Gallery has been enhancing collections and defining the visual arts for the past decade and a half. For the past 15 years your gallery has grown to be one of the region’s leading art galleries. What brought you into this arena? After a hard-charging career in internet technology I decided that I was ready for a significant change. My artistic passion for creating and collecting art led me to believe that I could help people understand what constitutes good art. After being snubbed and condescended by gallery personnel around the nation I felt that I could establish an art gallery wherein visitors would feel welcomed and appreciated for wanting to learn about and enjoy art. What was your vision for the gallery? There’s good art and not-so-good art. I’ve discovered that many people don’t understand what constitutes “good art” which generally results in them not buying anything or buying something that is safe and forgettable. My vision for Elder Gallery continues to be one wherein I provide high-quality art that is provocative, unique, and reasonably priced. Define the art you choose to represent. I require that the artwork represented through my gallery be unique and intriguing and of the highest quality. I strive to offer a broad selection of styles, techniques, and subject matter with which I can personally connect in hopes that the market will support my choices. What has Elder Gallery brought to the Charlotte art scene? Elder Gallery embraces the concept that conducting good business includes giving
back to the community. In 2015 we hosted the fourth edition of Carolina’s Got Art!, the largest juried art competition for artists living and working exclusively in North and South Carolina. The ceramic component of Carolina’s Got Art! is the largest of its kind in the nation based upon monetary awards handed out to ceramic artisans. The competition has achieved national prominence and expresses our commitment to the visual arts in our two-state area. We curate gallery and museum exhibitions, present lectures, and serve as judge or juror for art competitions. What’s next for Elder Gallery? Each of my paintings represents a moment in time, a memory, a feeling, a personality. Each is a personal snapshot. This image is from a trip to Italy. I watched these two women as they were sharing some time leaning against the ancient wall relaxing in the loggia on the large square in Florence. Magnificent sculptures filled the space in front of them. Sometimes they chatted but often were in their own world. I found them quite interesting and took a number of photos of them. Facial expression tells so much about the subject. Not in the manner of a portrait but as a way of capturing an emotion or feeling.

Ford Smith in Roswell Sparkling like a jewel in the heart of historic Roswell on Canton Street, the new Ford Smith Gallery emerges onto the local art scene featuring the radiantly serene landscape paintings from Atlanta’s own, worldclass artist, Ford Smith. This exclusive, artist-owned gallery is operated by veteran art team, Ford Smith and his wife Cristi. Ford is one of the nation’s most celebrated artists with worldwide gallery representation, while Cristi runs the the art business and writes for major art industry publications. This is their fourth Ford Smith Gallery, having had two other locations in Roswell and another in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “Ford lives and paints just a few miles from our new gallery, and after traveling for 3 years doing shows in other galleries, we missed having this broader stage to present his work,” Cristi says. Hidden Things Revealed Patricia Williams Opening Feb 5, 6-10pm A pinecone. A pear. An artichoke. Different and yet alike. A simple warmup sketch of these objects led Patricia Williams to this new exploration of the similarities and differences among common plants and animals. Glimpsed behind veils of abstract washes, disparate life forms are connected by color and shape. They reveal their nature as much by what is hidden as by what is revealed. The intriguing mix of abstraction and realism invites viewers to make their own interpretations of the images presented. The works are cerebral and often whimsical, yet display a strong emotional connection to the subject matter. A native of North Carolina, Ms. Williams now lives in Virginia and divides her time between Falls Church, the NC Outer Banks, and Albemarle County, where she finds inspiration in nature and the ever changing elements of the landscape. Mark Jenkins of the Washington Post said of Williams: The Virginia artist’s still lifes are hardly esoteric, but they do undertake the meta-
physical challenge of freezing instants amid unceasing change… Unlike most watercolorists, she applies multiple washes of paint, which is how she achieves voluptuous images such as “Plum Perfect,” which is halved, deep red and seemingly juicy. Williams also makes lyrical, near-abstract pictures in which bits of living things — petals, wings, pincers — swirl on white grounds… Williams may have a gentle touch, but it’s in the service of a forceful vision. This is the artist’s first solo show at 311 Gallery. February 9 – March 6, 2016 Opening Reception: February 12, 6-9PM Morphology and the Biomorphic Impulse “Biomorphism” or “biomorphic” abstraction is a term that describes a form of abstraction which employs rounded forms such as those found in nature. Well-known artists whose work employed this type of abstraction include, Wassily Kandinsky, Constantin Brancusi, Jean Arp, and Henry Moore to name a few. Mark Elliott, a sculptor and a featured artist in Morphology and the Biomorphic Impulse, delights in this form of expression because of its strong connection to the unconscious, not only in the creative process but in the viewing as well. He has teamed up with abstract painter Harriet Bellows, and photographer Bill McAllister, all three sharing aesthetic qualities and working with form, color, and line in various ways.
Norma Hendrix, founder and Executive Director of Cullowhee Mountain ARTS, began a practice several years back of doing a daily drawing as part of her journal practice. Before getting out of bed each morning, she would draw what she saw out one of the two long windows of her bedroom, in the circa 1890 farmhouse she dwells in. Mike Basher & Scott Taylor Black, White, and Color February 1-29 Beaufort Art Market, located steps from the waterfront on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, presents a very busy spring in both the gallery and studio! In the Gallery Throughout February, photographers Mike Basher and Scott Taylor will present selections from their wide and varied portfolios. Using an old-fashioned box camera, Basher finds the sublime in natural landscapes, while Taylor’s exceptionally composed images of coastal life evoke a sense of serenity and nostalgia. In April Natalie Italiano, portrait artist and Teaching Fellow with Studio Incamminati, will show off a portion of portraits from her year-long projects, “Portraits of Promise.” Italiano spent two years painting portraits of teenagers, one 4-hour session at a time. Individually, the portraits are both stoic and striking. Taken as a whole, they create a patchwork of possibility. In the Studio March 18-19, Donna Slade will lead a colored pencil workshop. Slade will introduce the basics of working with the medium with a focus on building bold color and depth with pencil. Slade is a partner of the New Bern, NC, gallery Fine Art at Baxter’s and is known for her realistic still lifes.
April 4-8, Natalie Italiano will present “The Portrait as Art.” This workshop focuses on building procedures to accurately paint a portrait from life. Students will begin with short studies and finish out the week with a two-and-a-halfday portrait session. Italiano is both an artist and a professional art instructor with honors from the Portrait Society of America, the International Portrait Competition and Artist’s Magazine.
Looking Forward This May, The Art Market will welcome Ken Karlic and Albert Handell. Both will lead workshops, and Karlic’s work will be in the gallery through early June. Sketching the beaches in Connecticut from childhood began Erickson’s passion for painting natural landscapes, the coast, and the shorebirds that inhabit it. After twelve years in business, just before turning 30, Erickson made a life changing move to Florida and resumed her artistic journey. She started painting again, studied with several of today’s masters, worked in a small gallery and began selling watercolors. After seven years she “quit her day job” and now maintains studios in Venice, Florida and Marshville, North Carolina.
Having lived in South Carolina most of her life, Teresa Jones is extremely familiar with the subtle beauties of this region. Her passion for capturing a glimpse of such beauty is what makes her paintings truly southern and uniquely realistic. From coast to countryside to the mountains, Jones offers the viewer a private window to the landscapes and scenery familiar to both South Carolina residents and visitors alike.
Fulfilling a dream since childhood, Erickson shares the beauty of the world she sees through her painting. Her soulful renderings of birds, beaches, and the southern landscape take the viewer through memories of their own.
Throughout the years, while raising three children, Jones studied various media and has selected oil as her medium of choice. She has studied with many local and nationally known artists, in formal classes, as well as workshops.
Erickson’s work can be seen in Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC; Helena Fox Fine Art in Charleston, SC; and Mary Anderson Fine Art in St. Simons, GA., among other fine galleries on the East Coast.
Jones is an active member of The Charleston Artist Guild and participates in many of their annual shows and exhibits. Her original work, as well as commissioned work is in private collections across the nation. She is also represented by Spencer Gallery I and The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery.

Courtyard Gallery is going “Into the Wild” for February as we feature large-format wildlife photography by John Nickerson. The images in Nickerson’s latest work were captured during trips to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. Nickerson and his wife, Brenda, were amazed at the magic and majesty of the bush and its inhabitants. “The hardest part of the trip was figuring out where I should point my camera, since we were almost always surrounded by wildlife.”
Jo Farris bases her paintings on layering forms with overlapping imagery. She combines abstract with realism, hard edge with soft, and bold colors with subtle tones. Her subject matter is also a combination of the real with the imagined.
Nickerson’s latest photo adventure included 8 days of photography game excursions during the height of the great migration. The images displayed are some of John’s favorites selected from the thousands he captured. Nickerson’s impressive large-scale photos bring the wilderness straight to the viewer, where one almost feels as if they were right there on the African plains face to face with a quirky giraffe, majestic lion, or intimidating cape buffalo.
Thomas Andrew is best known for is visually unique combination of acrylic and oil stain applied to wood and canvas using both brush work and palette knife. Mr. Andrew is a true colorist at heart with color taking precedence over the complexity of his subject matter. Jo Farris and Thomas Andrew are both southeastern artists with a long history of producing visually inquisitive works that take the viewer on a journey through canvas. The exhibit at Lagerquist Gallery is a unique exhibit bringing together the works from these two artists that showcase the dichotomy of palettes and subject matter that emcompass the portfolio of these two collector-quality artists.
Profiles in art Sandy Snead Lark & Key Gallery Sandy Snead co-owns Lark & Key Gallery with her husband, artist Duy Huynh. Celebrating 8 years this month, Lark & Key has been a staple of the Charlotte visual arts scene, bringing patrons unique, tantalizing 2D and 3D art. What was your introduction to art? I don’t recall a specific introduction but have been drawn to the creative process since childhood. My art classes in high school and a slight obsession with magazines led me to pursue a degree in graphic design, to do magazine layout and design. By the time I graduated I was more interested in jewelry and areas of art/design. Why a gallery? My husband, artist and gallery co-owner Duy Huynh, and I met at an outdoor art market where we were both selling our goods. Early in our relationship we talked about having a shop, a place to sell our work as well as work from other creative friends. Eventually we started hosting our own small art markets and the thought of opening a gallery became more enticing and realistic. I was freelancing as a textile designer when we decided to take the plunge and create what we had visualized for several years. How do you balance pottery and paintings? We represent a number of artists from around the country that work in acrylic, oils, encaustic, and mixed media. Since NC has a strong tradition of pottery we are proud to feature the functional and decorative work of local and regional potters. Balance of the two mediums can be achieved through contrasting and/or complimentary colors, textures, or narrative qualities that both may exhibit. We focus on flow, form and function, presenting work in such a
way that customers can envision enjoying in their own home. We noticed a lot of surrealist work. How do you choose your art? When choosing artists I look for work that is not only beautiful and well crafted, but fits the design aesthetic we have established for Lark & Key. We are drawn to work that is atmospheric, inspired by nature, slightly whimsical and/or slightly surreal (as you mention). I spent several years working in visual display and get to utilize those skills in the gallery, not only curating the work, but also striving for cohesiveness as well as breathing space. Our goal is to create a warm, cozy environment for our customers to explore art and hopefully leave inspired and uplifted. What’s next for Lark & Key? With each year we reevaluate what is or is not working, but ultimately we don’t plan too far into the future. We are very excited to be celebrating our eight-year anniversary this month, however we feel we are just hitting our stride. In 1999 a group of local women combined their extensive resources to plan a fun benefit to raise money to help United Family Services launch programs for victims of domestic violence. The annual event has raised over 1 million dollars for Safe Alliance over the past ten years through ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, a raffle, and the sale of auction items. Safe Alliance supports victims of domestic and sexual violence and child abuse and helps people build safe, healthy relationships. We do this through a continuum of shelter, counseling, legal and advocacy services serving more than 12,000 people a year in Mecklenburg county while reaching 10,000 more through advocacy and education.
