Border Art Prize 2020 On

Due to the Coronavirus and social dist this year marks the first time the Borde been held as an online exhibition.

The Border Art Prize is a biennial exhibition which supports the endeavours of artists living and working in Tweed, Ballina, Byron and Kyogle shires, and Lismore and Gold Coast City. The exhibition is open to all media and subject matter and attracts a wide variety of styles from both established and emerging artists.

This prize began in 2001 as the Tweed Valley Art Prize. It then became the Border Art Prize, co-hosted by the Tweed Regional Gallery and the Gold Coast City Gallery, with the exhibition alternating between the two Galleries until 2017. The Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre now hosts this popular prize as a biennial event.

The 2020 guest judge is Niomi Sands, Director of Grafton Regional Gallery.

First Prize of $3,000 is funded by Tweed Shire Council, with Second and Third Prize, of $1,500 and $500 respectively, being funded by the Friends of the Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre Inc. This year marks the first time the prize has been held as an online exhibition.

Due to the Coronavirus and social distancing restrictions put in place to keep the community, staff and volunteers safe, the Gallery closed its doors to the public on 16 March 2020.

Rather than cancel the Prize, in support of the artists of the region we decided to deliver the Prize online and offer a different experience for 2020. At a time like this it is important to have creativity and excitement in our lives, and we all know that the visual arts can provide that, and so much more!

This year the standard of entries is high. I wholeheartedly congratulate all the entrants - for their enthusiasm and willingness to try this different approach to the Prize. I also wish to thank all the artists for their words of support to the Gallery staff as we’ve adapted to the digital version of the Border Art Prize. This year we will showcase 392 entries, the largest selection ever to be ‘displayed’!

The exhibition includes painting, photography, textiles, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and more - and reflects the wealth and breadth of artistic endeavour in the region.
