‘You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.’ - Maya Angelou

T

here have been many silver linings

amongst the unexpected new challenges faced in 2020. Our first exhibition since lockdown celebrates the pure, multiplices and creative responses this period has enabled. The momentum of creativity has never, in our lifetime, felt so powerful. Artists have always needed and have been driven to respond to the world around them. Art provides a means of not only recording a moment in history, but equally gifts a window that transports their audiences on a personal journey they may not have otherwise embarked on.

Throughout the last six months, the diverse responses, interpretations and journeys offered by our artists, communicated through multimedia, has driven our determination to use the time we have spent in this altered universe to emerge fully ‘Locked and Loaded’. The ‘Locked + Loaded’ exhibition, the artwork it showcases and the artists’ quotes are a reflection of the unplanned journey we have been on, a celebration of what has been accomplished and a permanent reminder, that together, we can transform the world for the better. For instance with a little bit of imagination a photostudio can be created with stuff that is found at home. If you ask me the best part of being an artist is the freedom you have, the freedom to use your imagination any way you want, to be inspired by what is going on in the world or do something totally different to get away from it all. So I spent this period of time writing not only about the pandemic, but also my observations of human behaviour in society, introducing concepts of science, dance and art. The desert-like landscape was dramatic and from the moment of arriving I decided to create a work of art every day in my small bedroom, which I converted into a studio space. . The resulting body of work, Mindscape, is an expression of my pandemic experience and the insight that the outer and inner scapes are not separated from my own mind.”

Michael Slusakowicz works predominantly in painting, drawing, performance and video, often using different mediums to express his subject matter. In his practice, he aims to create images that communicate with the viewer in a narrative way. Very often, the subject of his work is hidden or takes place aside, unnoticed at first glance.

He tends to penetrate the veiled side of our society in search of the pure core of humanity both the dark and bright sides. Bold colours and texture are essential part of his visual language.

Sophie Derrick's work very much focuses on portraiture, but with the use of both painting and photography this genre is skewed and manipulated, and the transformative properties of paint are pushed to the limit. She photographs the act of painting onto her own skin and then paints on top of the photographs,

creating a layering of image of paint and painted image, blurring the boundaries between the two. The 'self' is lost, buried beneath the paint, and the notion of portraiture is questioned. ‘Into The Light - Blue Lagoon #6 100 x 70 x 3 cm Archival acrylic paint with overlying acrylic paint
