Dutchman Ludwig von Siegen invented the mezzotint. Mezzotint (manera negra, or «black manner») is one of the varieties of the copper cutting engraving. Principles: • depth of velvety-black colors • subtlety and richness of shade gradation • pictorial softness of tone transitions Small editions: • 10–15 prints • Up to 40 prints (with exceptional skill)
