Letter from the Board Chair and President

Dear friends,

First and foremost, from the Arts and Education Council to you and yours, we hope you are healthy and well. 2020 feels different than years past, but the Arts and Education Council, thanks to the generosity of our donors, continues to build appreciation and support for the arts in our community.

This year has certainly brought many unexpected challenges for so many in our community, but our commitment to our arts community has not changed. We are excited to share some of the ways we keep art happening.

We also invite you to look back at some of the highlights you helped us accomplish in 2019, on the reverse side of this brochure. The success of 2019 carried us into 2020 and kept art happening across our bi-state community. Thank you for your continued support that contributes to our vibrant arts community.

IMPACT

The Arts and Education Council serves diverse communities throughout our region - where you live, work and play. That’s why the Arts and Education Council’s grant programs fund everything from art education programs in a variety of schools to theatre and visual art events for those living in rural communities surrounding St. Louis. The Arts and Education Council understands that our donors are as diverse as the arts themselves, and our wide range of funding approaches reflect the myriad values of our community.

The Arts and Healing Initiative

is the first program of its kind in the Arts and Education Council’s history. In 2019, The Arts and Education Council received funding from the Missouri Foundation for Health to launch a five-year program to improve the quality of life for people throughout St. Louis City and County. In 2020, with additional support from Crawford Taylor Foundation, Missouri Arts Council, Marillac Mission Fund, Graybar and Church on the Rock, 13 organizations were awarded a total of $115,000 in funding to support programs that provide healing through the arts.

2021-22 Arts and Healing Initiative Grantees

The Angel Band Project Through Telehealth Music Therapy for Survivors board-certified music therapists with experience in trauma will conduct music therapy programs with survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence.

Bread and Roses Missouri Workers’ Theater Project strives to make theater more accessible to workers and their families, broaden who partakes in artistic expression, and welcome working-class St. Louisans into artistic spaces by using theater to examine and discuss the political and economic landscape of the region, getting to the roots of the poverty and inequity in St. Louis.

Family Resources and Community ConnectionsFamilies will learn how to release stress, anxiety and depression, build self-esteem and awareness and how to express, communicate and connect through music, drama and writing.

Intercultural Music InitiativeSonic Safari is an educational and community outreach program for young people of middle and high school age which leverages diverse cultural programming as a rallying platform for intercultural appreciation and to forge dialogue.

Jacob’s Ladder Ministries Sew Hope provides therapeutic sewing support groups with access to sewing machines, instruction, and techniques led by local skilled seamstresses for women who have been exposed to the criminal justice system.

Springfield Street Choir.

Prison Performing Arts allows individuals completing their sentences at the Transition Center of St. Louis, a community reentry facility in North City operated by the Missouri Department of Corrections, opportunities for self-paced, hands-on learning in their pursuit of self-awareness and healing.

A Red Circle Chosen Pathways is a summer job program for youth between the ages of 15 and 24, that exposes youth to the positive culture of our community, helps them explore their own gifts and talents and network with other organizations.

Rustic Roots Sanctuary participants will create natural art through the foods they grow as they learn agricultural arts. The programs will include art workshops at the farmers market, an annual arts festival and culinary art demonstrations.

Springfield Street Choir which provides its singers an artistic outlet, a sense of purpose and a place to belong and works to create social change through awareness and advocacy, is made up of people experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty.

St. Louis ArtWorks Art Therapy will be provided to youth at St. Louis ArtWorks. Their art therapist will meet with each participant at the start of every program to identify and address barriers and to engage with participants throughout the program to address issues identified by apprentices.

St. Louis Classical Guitar in partnership with Hope Creates and Clayton Juvenile Detention Center, will offer a 15-week program for teenagers recently released from incarceration that will provide teens who have a history of addiction with multidisciplinary arts and music healing experiences.

Your Words STL Crossing Delmar is a collaborative project where students from elementary and middle schools located on opposite sides of the Delmar Divide will collaborate on a creative project which fosters individual and relational healing by guiding the development of racial and emotional literacy.

PNC Program Grants

underwritten by the PNC Foundation help smaller organizations make a big impact by providing meritbased grants for arts and arts education programs addressing community needs across the region. In 2020, 10 organizations received support for programs that occurred virtually and in-person.

2020-21 PNC Program Grantees

Bach Society of Saint Louis’ Finding Your Voice Educational Video Series will expand its educational reach by providing free content via an engaging series of videos that introduce children and youth to different singers’ stories and musical materials students might not otherwise be able to experience in an in-person classroom.

Bread and Roses Missouri’s Workers’ Theater Project strives to make theater more accessible to workers and their families, broaden who partakes in artistic expression, and welcome working-class St. Louisans into artistic spaces by using theater to examine and discuss the political and economic landscape of the region, getting to the roots of the poverty and inequity in St. Louis.

Circus Harmony’s Architecture and Acrobats teaches young people to be creative artists as they choreograph and perform site-specific shows that bring the arts to neighborhoods. Throughout the process they’ll work with neighborhood organizations and those interested in the history of the region to ensure accurate storytelling and community engagement.

Creative Reaction Lab’s Artwork for Equity Advocacy Campaign, which was launched in 2017 in recognition of the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, will address the decline in arts education among Black and Latinx youth by centering and uplifting these youth voices and promoting their artwork as a means of enacting social justice.

Midtown Community Services’ ARTrepreneur and Midtown Radio Production Programs leverage the arts to teach students entrepreneurship, brand development and media production. Students learn how to write, produce and perform their own music, ultimately learning how to create valuable media projects that can be used to inspire the community and serve as a tool to promote social justice in St. Louis.

Pianos for People’s Free Summer Music Camps cater to a broad range of skill levels, including age-specific camps that provide students with educationally appropriate material while also building a sense of community and belonging.

Prison Performing Arts’ Learning Through the Arts offers year-round performing arts classes to youth and young adults, ages 12-24, who are currently in prison or detention facilities with the goal of creating opportunities to reveal their talents, intelligence and humanity to themselves, their families and the wider community.

Riverview West Florissant Development Corporation’s Imagination Creates Expression supports youth in the North Corridor of St. Louis City who are using their voices in the community in which they live through verbal and written expression.

The St. Louis Artists Guild will present It Was All Very Queer, a national juried exhibition examining contemporary queer artists residing within the United States. The show will examine contemporary queer artists’ work, which investigates identity, social norms, inclusivity and the celebration of being queer.

St. Louis Poetry Center’s Outside Literary Magazine empowers high school students as writers, artists, entrepreneurs and leaders through online and print publishing. Through the publication process, students build literacy, web and graphic design, marketing, printmaking, event planning and leadership skills.

Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis’ 2021 Tennessee Williams Festival highlights the works of the St. Louis native and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright through multidisciplinary arts events, including “The Glass Menagerie”.

IMPACT

The Bayer Fund Rural Community Arts Program

has been essential to providing access to the arts in rural communities across the bi-state region for nearly two decades. In total, the program has provided more than $200,000 in funding to bring artists and entertainers into classrooms and performance venues so that adults and children living in the rural communities surrounding the St. Louis metropolitan area can thrive with greater access to the arts.

is a professionally led program targeted to executive directors and CEOs of arts and cultural organizations. The focus is to support executive directors with peer exchanges and resource sharing through peer learning. Research has proven this “peer learning cluster” is a low-cost method of offering training and technical assistance to nonprofits that could not afford the full services of a capacity building consultant. The Arts and Education Council collaborates with The Rome Group to professionally facilitate the roundtables.

The 2021 St. Louis Arts Awards

on May 24 at The Big Top celebrated our region’s rich artistic legacy and future by honoring seven artists, educators, organizations and corporate citizens for their contributions to our community.
