She reproduces unusable cups, embroiders books worn out with time and collects antiques. Any fragile material is her best incentive. She works with time, memory and the intangible significance of objects. Mariana Tocornal practices art that is able to define and evoke an emotion in just one piece.

Tal como todos inconscientemente, lo mío es hacer lo práctico, impráctico.
l borde de perderse, pero en pie sobre un mesón, una antigua taza de porcelana vacía. Quién sabe en cuántas mesas estuvo de integrante a la hora del té años atrás. Mariana la mira y piensa en su abuela y la abuela de ella. No entiende bien cómo después de tanto, siendo de porcelana, vive para robar su atención y contrariarla. Una simple taza que ha perdido involuntariamente su propósito, vive única y exclusivamente a merced de un recuerdo, el que podría de pronto desvanecerla para siempre, casi igual como se perdería si simplemente cayera. Mariana Tocornal no suelta esa fuerza que le da el poder a un recuerdo para inhabilitarla en pos de hacerla perpetua.

As all of us do unconsciously, my work is do make the practical, impractical.
n the verge of being lost, but sitting on a counter, is an old empty porcelain cup. Who knows how many tables it has been on through the years as an integral part of their teatime. Mariana looks at it and thinks about her grandmother and her grandmother’s grandmother. She does not understand how after going through so much and being made of porcelain, it lives on to steal her attention and upset her. A simple cup that has involuntarily lost its purpose lives only and exclusively at the mercy of a memory that could soon fade forever, almost the same way it would be lost if it were to simply fall. The ability of Mariana Tocornal to take a memory and make it everlasting never wavers.
