Editor’s Note

Art Bodega Magazine has always had a correlation with philanthropy and beautiful subjects. From the cultural iconic people we feature several times a year, our productions showcase a meticulous arrangement of elements, from photographers like Antoine Verglas and the up-and-coming talent who dedicate themselves to the art of professional photography to the careful and time-consuming process of professional makeup, hair, styling, and location scouting. This is what makes Art Bodega Magazine unique in the printing world of luxury magazines.

Our subjects also explore the continuity of culture, the arts, foundations that have for many years supported the base of a healthy and wonderful society where like-minded people create, support each other, prevail, and conquer the vicissitudes of ignorance, vacuous art and superficial approaches.

Our approach is significant in the pursuit of real stories, stories that impact like the foundation of War Horses for Veterans established in Stilwell, Kansas. This is one of the best examples of fortitude, endurance, dedication, and reality that impact our lives on a daily basis. The statistics are proof of this.

It’s Director Bret Cortright explains the impact that veterans receive by participating in their program. War Horses for Veterans has been so successful; the barn is expanding, more horses are being added, and more veterans are healing. Pat and Andy Brown created the program, and it is one of the most effective programs in the nation. The wellness it provides to the veterans, ex-law enforcement individuals, is a testament that horses can heal with their profound kindness.

FOLLOW

Facebook,

The other side of kindness we are witnessing is in New York City. The Luisa Diaz Foundation is a big part of this magazine with the role of helping women around the country who are victims of domestic violence. Our cover story is Dina Lohan, the mother of a successful dynasty of child actors and actresses, including Lindsay, Michael, Dakota, & Aliana Lohan (she is featured in the magazine as well). Lohan is the co-chair of the Mi Amor Gala to take place on May 6 (for full disclosure, I am also a co-chair of the prestigious Gala). With the support of the uber-talented Antoine Verglas, we were able to capture incredible images of the Lohans (wearing high fashion, Michael DiPaulo), Julia Haart, Luisa Diaz (founder of the Luisa Diaz Foundation), as well as Nicole Miller (on a separate photo session), and Candace Bushnell.

All these women make New York City vibrant, exciting, and the world's epicenter. The fact that they got together (thanks to Anna Rothschild) is a testament that women’s voices can be heard, that abusive men or women can be stopped and that kindness will prevail. Rothschild also secured the stars aligned for the non-profit PSA campaign Kindness is Cool. The purpose of Luisa Diaz’s foundation is to help victims of domestic violence, bring glamour to their wounded souls, and profess to the world that anything is possible, healing does exist, and that people who have influence and power can achieve beautiful things by uniting efforts and creating a beautiful Gala with a philanthropic purpose. This is the reason why we have donated an entire issue for these great causes.

Other stories of impact are currently featured. Ex-Playboy bunny and survivor Francine Fox's story is one of those captivating narratives made for a movie. She posed at ease in front of the lens of Stephen Almeida at the famous Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach. Our other fantastic article is that of Barbara Padilla. Padilla is a survivor of cancer, one of the most talented opera singers in the world, and is now ready to continue a legacy of many decades. Her talent exudes through the pores. Just listening to her sing awakens the strongest emotions of our senses. She does advocacy for cancer survivors around the world, her story is an incredible testament that life is a wondrous journey and that miracles do happen.

BAL HARBOUR SHOPS POP UP

Approaching the old charm town of Charleston, I have visited the wondrous city several times in the last few years. Nonetheless, nothing prepared me for the experience of the marvelous Bal Harbour Pop-Up Access brought by the business genius of Bal Harbour Shops President and CEO Matthew Whitman Lazenby. The luxury retail giant brought the 30 custom-built shipping containers on a touring experiential project of branded pop-ups in the United States, including Destin, Florida, Greenville, South Carolina, and currently Charleston, South Carolina.

The impressive installation is what captured my attention. The area was strategically chosen to be near Charleston. Just crossing The Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge, one of the most famous landmarks that straddles the Cooper River and connects Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston, you find a vast area that connects you to the soothing sounds and breeze of the river. Bordering the water, the luxury popup welcomes you with a fully staffed venue that consists of local hires and representatives from Bal Harbour. As you enter the facility, the pleasant smiles are glad to accompany you, ready to customize your experience for your needs. From Tiffany & Company to the beautiful Assouline Pop-Up, where you can find

the most luxurious books on the market, this concept is perfect for the sophisticated shopper who wants to take a friend to lunch, while looking for the perfect present, or for that father who wants to take her daughter and have a meal at the Whitman, the luxury in-dining venue carefully decorated with great black and white shots of fashionable women. The food here was superb. Every bite was delightful.

From the caramelized onion and goat cheese tart that melts in your mouth to the mojo braised veal cheek that was soft, organic, and delicious, every dish here was perfectly executed by the Constellation Culinary Group. The inviting atmosphere of The Whitman makes you not want to leave such an elegant dining spot. Also, The Whitman cheeseburger is a must! It comes with smashed caramelized onions and pickles in a brioche bun with a perfectly mixed Whitman sauce. Oh la la! It awakens all your senses. I get goosebumps just reminiscing about that perfectly sensory experience.

Outside on the patio, surrounded by the sumptuous garden, with the shop’s palm-tree motif and garden-like planters filled with lush greenery -with the only exception of the colorful koi fish that is in the actual mall in Bal Harbourgroups gather to enjoy the perfect daylight weather we were experiencing during our visit. The wine was delightful, as the food was. Perfect for any socializing, this pop-up surpassed our expectations. Ready to shop, we go to the stores, which include Tiffany & Company, Versace, Balmain, and more shops. The beautiful outfits, carefully curated to

rotate inside an array of excellent stores you might not find on King Street, await your presence. The entire concept is so desirable to shop, resulting in a luxury experience like none other. The occasion marks the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the famous mall that has captivated us since 1965, and what better way to honor this milestone for the retail giant in the luxury market, than by taking it to other beloved cities in the country. www.balharbourshops.com

WHAT’S NEW

Since 2020, Bal Harbour Shops in Bal Harbour has been undergoing a significant expansion and development plan to maintain its status as a premier luxury shopping destination. The planned project includes a $550 million expansion that will nearly double its retail space, adding around 400,000 square feet to accommodate 35 new upscale stores and restaurants.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

In 1965, when owner/developer Stanley Whitman opened Florida’s first exclusive, high-fashion shopping center on what had been the site of a World War II army barracks, retail experts scoffed at the ambitious Bal Harbour Shops’ upscale store mix. After all, at that time the norm was to mix essential service tenants—such as grocery and hardware stores—with retail. And, with the advent of air conditioning sweeping the nation, enormous, enclosed malls surrounded by seas of asphalt parking as far as the eye could see were being built at breakneck speed.

Bucking the trend, Bal Harbour Shops was designed to celebrate the balmy beauty of South Florida. Ideally situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay in the affluent village of Bal Harbour, the lushly landscaped, open-air destination didn’t look or feel like any other center in the United States. Even its parking areas with their generous palm canopies, were designed with comfort, convenience, and natural beauty in mind.

Bal Harbour Shops’ early success was largely due to Whitman’s resolve in persuading Neiman Marcus, in 1971, to open its first specialty department store outside its native Texas and in luring designer boutiques that previously could only be found along the Champs-Elysées in Paris.

The Whitman Saint Urban's IS A DELIGHT FOR THE PALATE

When you enter Saint Urban’s, you feel an air of European glamour nestled in the heart of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Located near the ever-expanding Charleston, the area is now synonymous with glamour, luxury, and old charm town feeling that makes you fall in love with it every step of the way. The narrow establishment is always packed; here, you can enjoy an ever-changing menu of farmhouse cheeses, charcuterie, and small plates. We tried the anchovies with paprika, and we couldn’t

enjoy it more, delicious for the voracious appetite of good foodies. Me, I am one of those! Warren Johnson is constantly present, making sure you have a unique experience.

He alongside his partner, Chad Besenfelder, founded the restaurant located at l’On Square, where other businesses look delightful and special. The menu list is intentionally succinct, with each label tasted and selected by Warren himself. Named after the patron saint of vintners, Saint Urban’s wine program leans

toward the old world, with clean, easy-drinking wines available by the glass. As we sipped our delicious pinot gris wine, we enjoyed the hand-selected cheese the staff recommended. It literally melted in your palate, waking up the senses of pleasant memories, as if you were visiting the South of France, in the proximity of a great destination city, like Charleston. Our early settlers couldn’t have been prouder of this little charm and cozy eatery that enthralls to the delight of the sophisticated.

The Eveningwear Collection “Enchanted” is comprised of delicate details seen in floral embellishments, vibrancy in color—canary yellow depicting the blossom of Spring— contrasted by black statement pieces seen in Chantilly lace jumpsuits and gowns.

Our new Blossom Collection is composed of a diverse array of silhouettes—sculptural designs contrast with soft and ethereal gowns. Intricate and whimsical embroideries and beadwork create unique, special embellishments of romanticism. www.michaeldepaulocouture.com

DINA LOHAN REMINDS us of what was once that young American beauty from Long Island who melted our hearts with her long blonde locks and her statuesque figure, which certainly enthralled us.  She still evokes an aura of the All-American Dream girl, capturing our imagination inspired by the 80s movies and high-level creative types that consisted of great talent rising from the Manhattan cultural landscape.  Lohan also produced some of the most good-looking, talented offspring of our new era in entertainment: Lindsay, Michael, Dakota, and Aliana Lohan—an All-American group filled with highly prodigious children who always stood out.

The woman who commuted from the East of Long Island in New York to the bustle and hustle of the big city, Manhattan, has always been a natural beauty with a sass for life.  Think of images of surfing babes in Montauk, grabbing a surfboard, ready to get on that convertible that took us to our long-lost dreams with the blue ocean on the horizon, hopes that went beyond and above, marking an era.  It was an era of dreams, of pure beachy vibes that we still behold in our hearts and carry in our souls, low and behold.

Even in the face of adversity, Lohan managed to create an empire of talented young individuals that broke the mold, including her oldest daughter, the iconic Lindsay Lohan, parallel to the stature of fame of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Brooke Shields.  “We worked very hard.  It took an entire support system to get our children to

Dina and Aliana Lohan just did a PSA for the Luisa Diaz Foundation titled: "Kindness is Cool" amongst other celebrities. Lohan is a co-chair of the Mi Amor Gala, May 6 at Cipriani, 25 Broadway, Wall Street.

Verglas is so used to photograph.  “She is a pro,” commented Verglas, while positioning her in front of the cameras at the Cipriani venue on 25 Broadway in Wall Street.

The secret of Dina Lohan that few people might know is that she comes from a thespian background.  The first thing she mentioned during the photo session was:  “My mother was a Broadway actress; she had me in ballet as a child.  As a child, we used to commute by train to attend ballet classes.  I was a dancer.  I loved all the entertainment that surrounded me, and being a high achiever was expected of me.  I grew up in a household that was really strong and family-oriented, with three brothers. In a way, I grew up like a tomboy.  I played sports, track and field, and was always in action.  I married at a young age and experienced heartache. One of my young memories was the loss of one of my first loves.  All that impacted my life,” commented Lohan, looking fantastic and enthusiastic about the future.

The next chapter for Lohan entails a very personal project.  “We are preparing my memoir with one of the big publishing houses in the United States.  Since we are in the planning stages, I cannot comment too much about it, but it’s making me think so much about my entire life.  My entire past is what I am about.  You think of all the things that have built your core.  I consider myself a powerful person, extremely spiritual.  I have an amazing foundation.  Through all the trials and tribulations I experienced as a single mother if it wasn’t for the support system of my household, I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

Fast forward, we discussed the stage of her life where the children were attending several auditions.  “My parents helped me. I call Poppop and Nana the foundation of our family.  They were always there for me. Family is so relevant.  My brothers, my kids.  We celebrate holidays, and we are united by this common thread: family.  No one can deny it.”

Indeed, Lohan suffered highs and lows in her life.  She married at a very young age, got pregnant during her honeymoon, and raised four children.  “I did have a marriage full of struggle.  I do believe it made me stronger.  I have always dreamed of being happy and having a perfect marriage similar to my parents.  It did not happen. I struggled so much because I didn’t know what was happening.  There was embarrassment and guilt, which I didn’t know, and I was just plain and simple, young.  I do think that it taught me how to be stronger, I became a survivor, and if it wasn’t for my strong spiritual background, it would have been much harder.  The support system was completely necessary.  I am still hopeful.  I do want to succeed in love.  It’s been a long ride

in the entertainment industry.  Learning in Los Angeles how to navigate the television and movie industry.  But you learn, and all those elements again make you stronger.”

Her profile has been documented in every major magazine in the world.  No matter what Lohan does or says, it becomes viral.  She guards her private life from the Hamptons to Manhattan, places she currently enjoys in the social setting that defines the metropolis.  Still, she travels to Los Angeles to manage the acting career of her children Dakota and Aliana.  Both are also extremely talented.  “It gets busy all the time.  We try to spend as much time together as possible.  We have family chats where we joke about parenthood, our habitual daily routines, and more.”

"I

CONSIDER MYSELF A POWERFUL PERSON, EXTREMELY SPIRITUAL"

Lohan, who has seen her personal life made fodder, maintains a regality about her persona.  “You need to have thick skin.  It is all based on how you handle the pressures of the entertainment industry, it either builds you or destroys you.  If you don’t have that, don’t pursue this industry.”  Reminiscing past experiences that were sometimes not that great, being in the public eye, and sometimes being bullied, Lohan has that stoic approach to acceptance.  “My formation as a child in dancing, with a beautiful strong family with very spiritual values, made me endure that pain.  Being a victim of domestic violence happens habitually, and being attached to the cause through the Luisa Diaz Foundation and the Gala about to take place enhances my motivation to help other women that struggle like I once did.”

“My children were affected.  There is not one day I won’t think about it, but it builds your character and your persona.  It makes you unique and different.  I always tell the mothers of children who are making the rounds of auditions and in constant pursuit of a movie or television career to understand that the casting director is an arm of the director.  That person will look for that angle that made the actor unique.  That’s what happened with Lindsay when she auditioned for The Parent Trap.  She

stood out among hundreds of children, with this unique way to smile that enchanted the casting agents.”

“If you fail at an audition, then you continue, move on.  Don’t derail.  I always recommend being proactive, looking the other way when you face intense criticism, and enjoying the ride.  That’s what life is about,” mentioned with confidence the attractive Lohan, who hasn t given up on romance, dating, and finding true love.  “I’ve only had a couple of serious relationships.  With age, experience, and wisdom, there are things that you will overlook when you are in the process of finding a partner.  I am in a good place now; I want to return to the quiet of the Hamptons.”  Alongside her youngest daughter, Aliana, who has also acted in films and TV series at a young age, the career of this singer, songwriter, actress, and model is about to take off. She’s been filming Netflix productions with her uber-famous sister, Lindsay Lohan.  Both are cornering the market of rom-coms thanks to their subtle, genuine beauty and, most of all, talent.

“One of the most important things I always asked my kids was, what are your dreams?  In my strong family network of support, we had an environment of embracing the possibilities.  You have to understand that my father was a theologian, he studied psychology and had a minor on theology His strong spiritual core built this family This is what I credit my kids for being strong.  They loved the arts.  Lindsay was into the arts at an extremely young age, dancing and singing.  She was a natural.  The thespian side comes from my mother acting in the theater on the East End of Long Island. The Theatre, Broadway, and the Arts have always impacted our lives and deeply influenced us.  People automatically assume we were just lucky But that’s not true at all.  We worked very hard and still work hard.”

The mother, who also managed her children's career, is an expert on building careers in entertainment.  Lohan has navigated Hollywood and is known globally The international stardom aspect of her children makes her a unique chameleon in the spectrum of privacy, fame, and maintaining relevance in an ephemeral field.  “You need to know when to stop when to recharge when to speak when to not speak.  Follow your instinct and make personal decisions based on instinct.  Another great detail that I teach my kids is that we should not judge anyone.  The battle for freedom and independence but maintaining a family while dabbling all these worlds creates a sense of expectancy – that you never know what to expect.  One of my favorite songs is Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror; listen to the lyrics.  It teaches a powerful message."

ALIANA LOHAN

JUST FILMED a PSA for the nonprofit pertaining to the Luisa Diaz Foundation. The mission of this charity is to help women who have suffered domestic violence as well as other type of aggression throughout their lifetime. At only 31 years of age, Lohan is considered a beautiful woman that helms from the Lohan family, a dynasty of entertainment individuals all connected to Hollywood and television. Recently she has acted in television movies released on Netflix, including Falling for Christmas, a holiday romantic comedy alongside her sister Lindsay Lohan.

“I just love songwriting, singing, I can do acting, modeling and perform in a live stage,

but there is nothing like music to me. Even if I delve in different genres, music is the one that I am the most passionate about, the one that will never leave me…” confessed the brunette while posing for the cameras for Antoine Verglas. During her participation at the Mi Amor Gala (MAG Gala) preview photoshoot that took place in Cipriani, Wall Street, the exuberant venue where the Gala will be celebrated on May 6, Lohan confessed she is happy to be in New York City living with her mom, the uber famous Dina Lohan. “I am happy I am back in New York City. I just love the authenticity of the city. Nothing like New York. I was in Los Angeles, I am working hard on my acting and singing career, but I am deeply in love with the Big Apple,” commented Lohan.

Lohan is the sister of several other siblings; she definitely conveys the fact that her mother is of great influence in her career. “If it wasn’t for my mother, who has been a single mother

raising different children, traveling back and forth from audition, she is the sole person that I am indebted to in so many ways,” emphasized Lohan during our conversation.

Alongside her sister Lindsay Lohan in movies the experience marked an interesting chapter in Aliana’s life. She is very close to her sister Lindsay “We love fashion, we are so into it, fabrics. At some point of my life I lived with Lindsay when she was collaborating with Karl Lagerfeld. It was so amazing to be living with her while she was doing it I learned so much about the industry,” explained the brunette who has been doing modeling jobs since she was a child. She did campaigns for major brands including Calvin Klein. At the moment, Aliana is living an exciting moment in her life, producing music, singing on stage, booking jobs, and just being young, beautiful and joyful. Bravo to the new generations!

Julia Haart has always captured the attention of the cameras. Her life as a successful businesswoman in fashion, establishes her as one of the top executives to arise in the New York City world of design, art and fashion. One of the co-chairs of the Mi Amor Gala (MAG Gala) to be celebrated on May 6, 2025, Haart has always known that sharp business acumen would be a staple of her success. On this occasion, Haart will receive an award given by The Luisa Diaz Foundation. She also filmed the official PSA of the charity titled: Kindness is Cool.

Posing for the lens of Antoine Verglas, Haart walks with ease in the monumental structure in Wall Street surrounded by warm lights, soft hues of red, purple and orange, which reflect directly on her outfit, one of her designs, a beautiful dress she created during her time as a Creative Director for La Perla.

Her life story is impressive. She was part of My Unorthodox Life, a Netflix documentary that follows every moment of the woman that

left the Jewish Orthodox life for a chance in the secular world. The show focused on the career and mother of four children. The film featuring Haart premiered in 2021; during that time she was the CEO of Elite World Group, a modeling agency focusing in making great business deals for models in the fashion world. Here she successfully refocused on the brand and achieved great success.

Her life has been on the public eye, her strength comes from that endurance provoked by the choices she had made. She is now a household name for all Americans. Haart continues to serve as the CEO of many successful enterprises and resides in New York City.

Where Grace Meets Purpose, and Kindness is Cool® Becomes a Movement

THE FACE OF A WOMAN, the touch of soft hands, the smile of a young girl—these images evoke peace, beauty, and strength. As spring blossoms across New York City, a season of renewal and rebirth, we are also witnessing the rise of something extraordinary: a kindness revolution led by Luisa Díaz, a USA citizen and  a Venezuelan-born powerhouse whose heart beats for healing, hope, and humanity. Dubbed the new socialite in New York City positioning kindness as a strength, Luisa brings elegance, authenticity, and purpose to every endeavor. A former beauty queen turned full-time philanthropist, she is the founder of the Luisa Díaz Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to restoring dignity and hope to survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking.

Luisa’s mission was shaped early on by the woman who first taught her the true meaning of strength.“My grandmother, a survivor of domestic violence—my hero—taught me kindness,” she says.

voice, and value. Her signature initiative, The Runway of Hope, is a breathtaking moment during the gala where survivors walk the runway in couture gowns, their heads held high, radiating self-worth. “It’s not just a fashion show,” Luisa says. “It’s a celebration of courage, of hope—and of walking toward the light." Where fashion meets compasion. Luisa personally works with each person training them to walk The Runway of Hope with pride and rediscover how beautiful and worthy they are.

“I’m so proud of every single one of them,” she says. “The greatest gift is when the survivor tells me, ‘This is the first time in a long time I’ve felt beautiful.’ That moment means everything.” But Luisa’s vision extends far beyond the gala. Her upcoming Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign aims to position kindness as a strength—, cool, and  sexy Featuring bold voices like Candace Bushnell, Dina and Aliana Lohan, Nicole Miller, Julia Haart, Patrick McMullan, Nick Adams, and Brandon Cole Bailey. Directed by Scott Woodward, known for his anti-bullying work with Lady Gaga and One Direction.

“This campaign challenges the outdated view that kindness is a weakness,” Luisa explains, “Kindness is strength. In a world that feels increasingly divided, kindness is the force that brings us back together. Now more than ever, we need to embrace it.”

“Not from a place of comfort, but from pain. She showed me that kindness is strength— the strength to walk away, to protect her children—including me—and to rise.”

With that legacy guiding her, Luisa has transformed her platform into a movement.

One of the most impactful expressions of this mission is the upcoming Kindness is Cool®  Mi Amor Graciousness Gala (MAG Gala,) taking place on May 6, 2025, at the legendary Cipriani 25 Broadway. Now celebrating its 11th year, the gala has become a life-changing evening of fashion, compassion, and transformation.

Now a proud Manhattan resident, Luisa works alongside her husband, businessman Alan Brown, to support grassroots organizations that work directly with survivors. “Some of the women we help need plastic surgery because their partners have cut their faces. Others need dental work because their abusers shattered their teeth,” she shares. “We partner with incredible organizations like Safe Passage Heals, Hope’s Door, and others that provide not only medical treatment, but emotional and psychological healing—for both women and their children.”

Through her foundation, Luisa offers far more than aid—she gives survivors visibility,

“I’M SO PROUD OF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM”

Her journey is as inspiring as her message. After arriving in the U.S. from Venezuela, Luisa worked tirelessly to earn her college degree, break into television, and create her own space in the media landscape. “I started with a 5:30 a.m. segment on a local North Carolina station,” she recalls. “The Latino community was just starting to grow. I pitched the segment myself, and it opened doors—not only for me, but for others who needed to be seen.”

Today, her foundation is capturing the attention of corporations, changemakers, and supporters from around the world.

“The truth is,” Luisa says, “we’re not just helping survivors—we’re creating a ripple effect of empathy and empowerment that touches families, communities, and generations.”

As the world spins forward, Luisa Díaz stands firmly in her purpose—rooted in resilience, fueled by faith, and blooming with every act of kindness.

Because "Kindness is Cool®."

And she’s here to prove it—one life, one voice, one ripple at a time. Luisa Diaz foundation website: https://luisadiazfoundation.org

While posing at the Arlo in Soho, we spent an entire day with Nicole looking at some of her past designs, iconic pieces from past decades, while she posed for the cameras of Shafiyev.

You just sponsored and mentored the LIM College students at the Glasshouse. How was the experience? It was such a fantastic experience working with all this young talent. I was very impressed by how they produced every aspect of the show. They did everything from the concept to the choreography to the selection of the clothing and the styling. They seem to be a very motivated young group of

students. It was interesting to hear their vision and see all the work they put into it. I think it was a very successful event and something they should all be proud of.

How has fashion evolved from when you started. When I started designing everything in the United States was very cut and sew. We were very limited to the American factories that did not like to make anything too difficult. We didn’t have the global sourcing we have now. There are such tremendous options working with Europe, Asia and India. All these techniques and embellishments have clearly influenced and elevated American fashion. Trend wise I still see the same recycling of trends and bringing back one period after another.

What does Manhattan represent for you?

New York is the mecca. It really is the center of everything. I love to travel but I am always happy to come home. If I’m not here I always feel like I am missing out on something and I probably am!

What makes a dress become iconic. A woman wearing it? The textile?

All these things can make a dress iconic. If it gets worn on a celebrity, it’s a big help. Obviously, a strong design or print is more memorable than something on the plain side. Even though I was always known for the LBD my other designs have been more iconic. The most famous I think being the dress Angelina Jolie wore on stage at the Mr. and Mrs. Smith premiere. It was a beautiful striking print, and it was on a beautiful striking celebrity. The best of all combinations plus all the curiosity about their relationship added more buzz.

Also Beyonce has worn many of my clothes but there was on dress in particular that she performed in that became a huge hit . That was definitely iconic and very memorable.

What keeps you active in the city that never sleeps…

Well of course I have to go to every new restaurant!

I am such a foodie! I am always busy whether it’s gallery hopping, seeing shows or going to events my calendar is always full. Squeezing in time for the gym too!

You mentioned during our shoot that you only eat what is delicious. Tell me about your downtime, how

do you spend time with friends and loved ones. Well, I do not like to eat bad food nor waste calories on something that is not delicious. I think it is the French in me but it’s always important to me to eat well. Also, I love to cook and I love to experiment with different cuisines.

Plans for the Hamptons.

Our house is not quite done but hopefully we’ll be able to be in by early summer. I love entertaining and having friends over for lunch or dinner. I love going to the farmer’s market and buying all the fresh produce. We usually do a lot of wakeboarding and water skiing too. There are also a lot of fabulous events happening that we enjoy going to. Of course, I always love having my girlfriend lunches at Bilboquet!

Thoughts on the Mi Amor Gala to take place on May 6 in Cipriani? What makes New York City so interesting when it comes to charities and Galas? It’s a great organization and they do a fantastic job of helping women. Everyone last year looked very glamorous so it’s good for women and good for fashion. I think they are doing an amazing job.

TOSHA HAYS

HAYS GOES BEYOND THAT ATTRACTIVENESS OF HER PHYSICAL BEAUTY.

Tosha Hays is tall, slim, and resembles a supermodel. Captured by the lens of Antoine Verglas, her demeanor is understated, elegant, chic, with a New York City style embodying the high fashion so characteristic of the global jet set world; but instead of being superfluous and unapproachable, Hays goes beyond that attractiveness of her physical beauty.

In lieu of just talking about the latest trends, she entertains extensive and deep conversations on the legal implications of the tariff policies that China has taken advantage of, by selling fast fashion to shipments of under 800 dollars through sites like Temu, Amazon and many more.

“Yes, it shouldn’t be allowed,” explained in detail Hays touching the subject of

sustainability. In today’s world, the Gen Z generation shows deep concern about saving the planet, but have the dire task of dressing fashionably -while being budget conscioushence the business of cheap clothes and fast fashion. “I’ve met young women that do not have a choice. But fast fashion is a big problem for our environment. We need to address this,” pointed out the Massachusetts resident. Hays who graduated from the University of Georgia, was born in a rural town of just 150 people. Her mother loved fashion, allowing her to grow up with an acute knowledge and intuition about fabrics, what really works for society, what creates comfort. She has created many patents we comfortably wear in today’s world and sometimes take for granted. Example given, fabrics that cool our bodies, great for women in menopause or perimenopause.

The former executive of Spanx has an impressive array of accolades to her name. She served as Chief Product Officer for Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA), and an institute supported by MIT,

the Department of Defense, and the state of Massachusetts. She also has TLH Designs, a consulting firm for entrepreneurs, worked for Blogilates, and Popflex Active, with brands distributed at big retailer stores like Target. She currently has a high position in Venus Fashion Inc, integrating AI into product creation. Hays and her partner are currently working on a first of its kind patented sock via Hurdle Apparel Inc.

“The importance of education and entrepreneurship are two things I am passionate about. I will continue to develop concepts to improve the world. This is just the beginning for a woman who loves fashion and who helped develop innovation with the big fashion names like Tommy Hilfiger, Bella Freud (Sigmund Freud’s granddaughter), and Sara Blakely, creator of the brand Spanx.

Profiles

María (Mari) Mediavilla

Some people walk into a room and command attention. Others build empires quietly, letting their work speak for itself. And then there’s Mari Mediavilla Allende - a woman who does both with ef-fortless grace.

Mari isn’t just a businesswoman; she’s a powerhouse, a trailblazer! The kind of woman who sees possibilities before the world catches on. Decades before global markets embraced the East, she was among the first to import art from Asia to the United States, curating and selling exquisite pieces in her French Quarter, New Orleans, World Trade Center, Dallas & Aspen, Colorado Galleries. Her abil-ity to predict trends and move industries forward didn’t stop there. She transitioned into entertain-ment, managing talent and shaping careers; all while staying ahead of the curve in a constantly evolving industry.

Today, alongside her husband, the legendary Mexican actor, singer, producer, writer & a renowned Contemporary Art painter, Fernando Allende, Mari runs a production company in Puerto Rico. But while her resume is impressive; what sets her apart is something less tangible—an instinctive ability to connect people; not just professionally, but in a way that transforms lives.

Mari doesn’t just network; she understands people on a fundamental level. She sees their potential, their dreams, and, perhaps most importantly, who they need to meet to bring those dreams to life.

Her memory is almost mythical—ask anyone who has crossed her path and they’ll tell you she nev-er forgets a name, a conversation, or a moment of connection. That rare ability

has made her one of the most effective connectors in the world, seamlessly linking ideas, businesses, and people across industries and continents. But for all her business acumen, Mari’s true legacy is her generosity. She gives freely—her time, her knowledge, her energy—without expecting anything in return. Whether she’s mentoring an aspiring entrepreneur, guiding a creative mind, or offering a word of encouragement to a friend, she does it with an open heart.

Viviane Ventura

My husband, Errol Wetanson's company owns more that 80 restaurants in New York Needless to say in 30 minutes he could prepare the best meal you could wish for! One day, standing in the kitchen talking with each other, I put a piece of bread in the toaster, and soon smoke starts pouring from the toaster!

Errol annoyed with me, says: "What on earth did your mother teach you?" Listen Errol I speak 6 languages, I have published 5 books, two were best sellers, I have appeared in 17 films, I am a scratch golfer, I am Viviane Ventura and do you really expect to know how to cook as well?

Are you insane?"

He answered:

"Say no more!"

Mari doesn’t just network; she understands people on a fundamental level. She sees their potential, their dreams, and, perhaps most importantly, who they need to meet to bring those dreams to life.

Time zones don’t slow her down; neither does distance! Mari keeps friendships and business ties alive across the globe, switching between languages as easily as she navigates industries. She is, in every sense, a woman in motion— unstoppable, relentless, and always a step ahead. Maria Mediavilla Allende isn’t just redefining what it means to be a modern businesswoman. She’s proving that success isn’t just about what you build, but about the lives you touch along the way!

Fernando Allende

In an unprecedented historical event, the renowned artist, actor and singer Fernando Allende has taken his art to a new stage: the Moon. Thanks to a collaboration with SpaceX and the Lunaprise Moon Museum project, a selection of his vibrant abstract paintings and music have been digitized and sent to the moon aboard the Falcon 9. This event not only marks a milestone in Allende's career, but also at the intersection of art and space exploration. The launch, which reached the Moon on February 22, is a testament to both technological evolution and the transformative power of art. Allende's works, known for their intensity and emotional expression, are now part of a time capsule aimed at preserving

human culture and achievements for future generations, who might one day explore and even inhabit other worlds.

The NFT creation of Allende's works reaffirms his status as a key figure in 21st-century contemporary art. With a track record of more than 50 years, her inclusion in this lunar journey highlights her ongoing impact on the art world and beyond. Galactic Legacy Labs, in partnership with the Arch Mission Foundation and Space Blue, has led this initiative, making significant progress in the preservation of human cultural heritage. The Lunaprise Moon Museum houses a vast digital collection of art, knowledge, and human achievement, ensuring that humanity's legacy lives on over time.

FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN SILVER
LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

The magic of LAS VEGAS during the FORMULA 1 RACE

Arriving at the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix was a unique experience. Joined by one of the most celebrated photographers in the World, Antoine Verglas, we covered the fun weekend full of glamour, celebs, and the fast and furious roaring of the cars speeding the racetracks built to change Las Vegas. The city that saw Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack and Elvis Presley's conquer the hearts of millions is now one of the biggest capitals of the entertainment industry.

Formula 1 racing teams gather to celebrate such an immense sports event in the USA. The flashing and colorful lights were the background of this spectacle, an avalanche of crowds circling the Vegas Trip, visiting different grandstands, all sponsored by the beloved American brands we so much like to hear on our radio and television sets. Gambling, casino excitement, and the roaring sound of speed filled my ears, something I had never experienced before. It was immense and wonderful and filled our hearts with joy and wonder. ➤

Sexy Celebs, Cars & Hotels

Celeb-packed hotels that Verglas and I witnessed, a succession of red-carpet events resembling the Cannes Film Festival, but this time, it was in Las Vegas. Jay Leno walked through the halls of the Wynn Resort, one of the most unique properties for hospitality glamour, as he hosted the amfAR Gala, the charity that raises the most funds in the fight against HIV. Beautiful women carrying the train of their dresses, a vintage Cavalli dress being auctioned off to benefit amfAR, Sylvester Stallone and his family being honored, plus the Paramount suite at the Hospitality VIP section.

Did we meet Elvis? Of course, we did. The Elvis impersonator took us back to that era, all while being walking through the fabulous entertainment hall with Gordon Ramsay's restaurants and Papi Steak. The cocktails were delicious, you are being entertained constantly while watching the races live and on the gigantic screens positioned throughout the grandstands. This last November, we saw George Russell of Mercedes AMG Petronas emerge in Formula 1 while Max Verstappen claimed the 2024 World Drivers' Championship. Other fun events were the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, plus the enormous T-Mobile Stage with the well-known Sphere in the background, making a glorious delight for the spectators. ➤

The entertainment never stops….

Famous acts included Ludacris, Alesso, and One Republic, plus Shakehips, Big Boi, and Vandelux. The 50 laps of intense competition across the 3.8-mile track while we visited Ceasar's Palace Grandstand were so impressive that we didn't want to leave our spot. More than 306,000 people attended the event, which pumped more than 500 million dollars into the City of Las Vegas. Elvis would be proud.

ABOUT THE AMFAR GALA

Icon Diana Ross performed at amfAR's inaugural Las Vegas benefit event on November 22, 2024. Academy Award-winning actor, writer, and director Sylvester Stallone and accomplished entrepreneur, philanthropist, and model Jennifer Stallone were honored.

EX-PLAYBOY BUNNY with a huge heart

AND A STORY TO TELL

Photography by Stephen Almeida

Location: The Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach, FL

Playboy has always brought to us images of sensuality, glamour, fancy cocktails, debonair men, gorgeous women. Tall and slim, Francine Fox is one of those unique ladies that evokes that glamorous past of playboy bunnies, exuding a supermodel appearance combined with charisma and sensuality.

“It was the best training anyone could receive. At the Playboy Club, Hugh Hefner and his staff made sure you were properly trained; you had to know how to treat the high end clientele, and understood to perfection the luxury hospitality world at most,” said the ex-Playboy bunny, who now lives in Tampa, Florida, happily married after a whirlwind of stories that belong to a Netflix movie script. What Fox has been through is one of those incredible stories that hook you with their authenticity, the sense of danger that she actually lived since she was 14 years old, and the controversial decisions that even had her become a fugitive and confidante to some of

the worse criminals from South Florida during the “Cocaine Cowboy” era in Miami and the Caribbean. What Francine Fox has been through would shock any viewer to the core.

“My story is of survival. What’s happened to me, I do not wish to any young girl. I became an orphan at a young age, hailing from one of the wealthiest families in Cuba.

My grandmother built an entire city before Castro. Even my father went to Georgia Tech in the early 50’s, these were highly educated Cubans that participated in the US economy and culture at the most elevated level.

Nonetheless, my story has sadness and guilt in it. So many things happened to me at a very young age, I don’t wish it to any young woman,” explained the charismatic and beautiful Cuban, who poses in front of the cameras at ease, confident and happy, as she is now living the best chapter in her life. Nonetheless,

MY STORY HAS SADNESS AND GUILT IN IT. SO MANY THINGS HAPPENED TO ME AT A VERY YOUNG AGE, I DON’T WISH IT TO ANY YOUNG WOMAN

IN HER OWN WORDS, FOX ANSWERED OUR QUESTIONS WITH CONSIDERATION AND LOVE DUE TO THE SENSITIVE ISSUES SHE DISCUSSED WITH ART BODEGA MAGAZINE:

Where are you from?

I was born in the elevator of Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fl. 1958.

How did you get involved with the Playboy Brand?

I was a cocktail waitress in Miami Springs. One of the regular patrons had “connections” at the Playboy Club and knew there was an up-and-coming private interview and audition. Of the hundreds of women being interviewed, only five were chosen.

I was a COCKTAIL WAITRESS IN MIAMI SPRINGS. ONE OF THE REGULAR PATRONS HAD “CONNECTIONS” AT THE PLAYBOY CLUB AND KNEW THERE WAS AN UPAND-COMING PRIVATE INTERVIEW AND AUDITION.

Who were your mentors early in your life?

My early-stage mentors, I would say the gentlemen that owned the first night club that I worked at in Miami Springs, The Hunters Lounge, they took the time to train me in making and serving cocktails. My Mid Stage Mentor is my son, who was the reason for the change and who kept my life on track.

My third and present mentor is the angel that I met and married two years ago, he is my cheerleader, my lover and best friend, my rock, and my husband Brian. Because every woman deserves to know what the feels like. To be loved like this.

Tell me about the most important highlights of your life?

Working as a bunny afforded me the ability to support myself. Playboy Enterprises were very involved in mentoring all the Bunny’s in finance and education. The bunny mother was very strict following the playboy rules and encouraged us to further our education.

How did you know you could become a playboy bunny?

I didn’t. I wasn’t aware of my looks but thankfully they were. I had years of dance instruction and had the body for it. I genuinely enjoyed providing good service to my customers and had a good sense of humor.

What does it take?

We had to go to Bunny School paid for by Playboy Enterprises. My school was about three weeks of extensive training on drinks, food, service and etiquette.

We had to GO TO BUNNY SCHOOL PAID FOR BY PLAYBOY ENTERPRISES.

MY SCHOOL WAS ABOUT THREE WEEKS OF EXTENSIVE TRAINING ON DRINKS, FOOD, SERVICE AND ETIQUETTE.

Who Inspires you?

A lot of hard working, strong, creative women, at different times in my life. Like my great grandmother. Her name was Aurelia Mayasen; she was instrumental in building the third largest city in Cuba.

You’ve suffered a hard process of survival when you were in your 20s and 30s, and even throughout your whole life. How did it change you?

I wish I’d had a mom that truly loved me unconditionally and was in my corner. What I got was very different. My mother married me off at 15! She just wasn ’ t the best mother, she just wanted to get rid of me as she was in the process of divorcing my father. She was also having a relationship with a nefarious character. Left beaten and bloody by the age of 16, without direction from a good mom or dad, terrible things can happen. Thats why I am writing my life story, and I can attest that what doesnt kill you, makes you stronger.

You want to inspire others to overcome difficulty and challenges?

My whole life story has been nothing if not heart wrenching, difficult and beyond challenging. If I’m still standing, it’s because by a God given miracle, I am still alive and well. I know my story can help others. This is why I am writing a book about my life that’s been 15 years in the making.

How do you want people to remember you?

For being resilient, a fighter. Despite my childhood I became a responsible and a loving parent.

What is the world of Playboy for you?

It was my fantasy job at the time.

What was the Hugh Hefner experience for you? What can you tell us that people don’t know?

That Bunnies were not in the magazine. We were not allowed to date customers for fear of losing our job. We were untouchable while

we worked. We were treated like rock stars outside of our jobs. Hefner stressed education and financial freedom. We have had Bunnies that worked for NASA, they have become attorneys, doctors. They come from every walk of life.

How do you feel the brand will grow?

The new Playboy direction is bringing back the magazine and lots of merchandising.

Fox is planning to write her memoir and publish in the next few months. Her life story is an unusual tale of betrayal, love, deception and hope.

If

I’m stillSTANDING, IT’S BECAUSE BY A GOD GIVEN MIRACLE, I AM STILL ALIVE AND WELL. I KNOW MY STORY CAN HELP OTHERS. THIS IS WHY I AM WRITING A BOOK ABOUT MY LIFE THAT’S BEEN 15 YEARS IN THE MAKING.

BEAUTY, LOVE & TALENT

Barbara Padilla is one of those unique talents that makes a difference wherever she goes, changing your life by witnessing her art.

The young Mexican Opera Singer has been on the limelight all her life. At a young age, she had already been trained in the classical arts. She also possesses a beauty and raw talent that only the most prodigious children can claim. Her uniqueness derives from that God given talent and her stamina, strong will also differentiates her from the rest. Very few people possess that. During our photo session in Kansas City, at the beautiful barn of Pat and Andy Lyon Brown, founders of War Horses for Veterans, both Padilla and her businessman husband Henry, arrive with their charm; Padilla with her beautiful soft eyes and alabaster luminous skin is ready for her photo session. Her enthusiasm captivates you.

“I was born in Guadalajara, which is the midwestern plateau of Mexico. I was born and raised there. Let me share one side note before I start our interview: I remember almost every day of my life since I was one and a half years old. I remember names and places, and even the climate, which is easy since Guadalajara has perfect weather almost every day of the year.”

In her own words:

MY CHILDHOOD, MY YOUTH, CANCER, AND THE ARTS: FACTS AND PEOPLE.

“In a few words, I’m a cancer survivor, the first runner-up of one of the seasons of America’s Got Talent, an opera singer, a motivational speaker, and, among other things, I was Juan Gabriel’s guest artist during the last two years of his life. Allow me to share with you some events and names that encompass this fascinating journey.

Guadalajara is almost five centuries old, so there are many and wonderful ways to start any artistic discipline from a very young age. My mom, Luz Elena, is a very smart and cultivated woman. She played piano, although not professionally, and had an impressive collection of classical music. I started piano lessons with Armida Pérez when I was just about four years old; although I am not a pianist, that exposure paved an important path for the rest of my life.

My artistic formation was not only in music, but also in painting, theater, dancing, and even writing. My brother and I began to attend painting lessons every Sunday morning when we were very young. It was fascinating. Opera and classical music were what I thought everybody sang and listened to. I relate the best moments of my life to that kind of music. Mom used to take us to the beach on vacation. In my childhood, that place in Puerto Vallarta was my favorite place in the world. During the five-hour drive, she played many things that I used to sing along with. For instance, my all-time favorite, the solo for soprano of Beethoven’s Nineth Symphony. I just belted it out. Mom was always tickled and baffled by

the big voice coming out of that little body. Every child needs that figure that would feed those dreams and for me, for a while, was my uncle Javier. He was an MD, and I spent some of the greatest afternoons in the world with him, listening to his medical explanations, singing and coming up with stories to write. He would feed my love for medicine, music and writing like nobody else in the world. Most of all, he fed the little clown in me. When I was with him, I became the funniest person in the world. Everything I said caused him to explode with laughter. In general, I was a quiet and timid girl, so causing him so great amusement was refreshing and fun. He was my favorite person in the world. He passed away when I was 15. But he made a mark in my life that was impossible to erase. Mom had to work to bring us up. She was a social worker at a major hospital for 30 years. I was the oldest of three siblings which wasn’t always easy. My youngest sister was 12 years younger than me, and mom worked all afternoons. About when my uncle Javier passed, a very important character became very evident in my life: My aunt Concha Camarena. She had a ranch about an hour

away from Guadalajara. She had several dozen fine horses and about 40 dogs. She would pick up my little sister and me to go to the ranch several times a week.

I used to go with her every time there was a cultural event in the city. I was like her project, and she was just perfect in my life. We went to the opera together and that was very convenient -and free- since she had to cover it anyway. I will tell you more adventures with Concha in my upcoming book. Those beautiful adventures in the ranch ended abruptly when I was diagnosed with cancer.

A few months later, Chester my horse, died, but Concha had already marked my life for the better, forever. Meanwhile, my artistic life was taking form. There came a time when I was seriously thinking about entering medical school; I had never considered music as a career for real. I thought it was just an

impossible dream. Of course, mom made sure I took the prospect seriously. She said: “If you want to be a singer, be one, but you’ll have to study music, go to school and get a degree...”

Ah! How amazing was her advice! She found a chorale that I entered, and she also found my first voice teacher, Alicia Gonzalez Pacheco.

After a while, I found myself in the center of the music scene of my hometown.

After a short time, I was accepted into the School of Music of the University of Guadalajara. There, I met the voice teacher who helped me find my voice, literally. Maestro Enrique Suárez was my teacher and mentor. Under his guidance, I sang my first leading role in an opera, and I developed the sound that I still produce to this day.

In the afternoon, I was attending the school of music and in the mornings, I was working on a degree in Modern Languages. I took the

bus to and from both places, and I worked the weekends singing in the different chorales and giving concerts with symphony orchestras and other music companies. After a couple of years of that exciting rhythm, I noticed that, while I was riding the bus, I was almost falling asleep with exhaustion. Naturally, I attributed the fatigue to a very intense lifestyle.

One day I touched my neck, and I noticed that there was something new. At first, I thought I was developing muscles from singing; however, the growths were not symmetrical.

One evening, after my last class, I took the bus home. It was after 9:00 pm. My mother finished her shift at 9:30, so I decided to stop by her work so that we could get something to eat and ride home together.

Once in her office, I mentioned the strange bumps in my neck. Mom then took me to Dr. Peña’s office who was still in the hospital. He looked at me and said that he did not like the strange nodules. He was blunt and honest. He did say that it looked like cancer. Neither my mom, nor I got scared. We even joked about it. The doctor’s face was that of incredulity to our very strange and light attitude. I think we were just trying not to get ahead of ourselves. We are catholic. We have faith. We have trust in God Almighty now and then. We knew that no matter what, His Plan was perfect. I was attacked by a Hodgkin’s disease; a lymphoma that had progressed undetected to stage four. I faced the adversity with bravery and optimism that generated from blissful ignorance. At first, I thought the worst thing would be losing my hair. And it was a big thing, but nothing prepared me for what followed the next five years.

The initial treatments were somewhat of a nightmare, and all became progressively

worse. I had all the symptoms one might generally expect from receiving chemotherapy. My veins were burned, and hurt; my mind became confused, entire days disappeared from my memory. Everything became gray, and the scope of my vision diminished. I had no hair; my skin became green. I was just a sack of bones. I lost the capacity to feel pleasure in anything; I didn’t want to eat, nor sleep, nor talk; a heavy sadness shrouded me. I felt utterly and completely alone, as I tried to understand and explain my symptoms. All hope was just a weak concept I was hanging onto just for the Grace of God. How I prayed! How I begged for answers in my Faith; and I got them in due time. In His time. As all symptoms came and went in various degrees, and before I was done with the first cycle of treatments, I made way to graduate with two degrees. I kept singing, touring, and traveling in between sessions, and, let me tell you, it was hard! But I think without the stage and music, I would have certainly given up.

My panorama didn’t look good at all. The first treatments didn’t work. The illness kept coming back and I was just too tired, and I did not have any plans... I thought I had no future at all. I gave up. I wanted my hair back and to fall in love, you know, like any normal young woman. So, I quit going to the doctor and decided to stick with alternative medicine (natural, vegan, etc., etc)

One day, I heard the news that the State Choir of Jalisco was holding auditions. The whole institution was to be restructured: new conductor, section leaders, and all voices were called to apply. Being a member of the state choir was a real job. Singers were to show up for daily rehearsal from 9:00 to 1:00, in addition to several performances. The job came with medical insurance and a salary. At first, I was not interested at all; but all my friends urged me to try, so I acquiesced. The day of the auditions, I woke up with an awfully sore throat. I had a fever, my body ached, etc. Naturally, decided to just forgo the entire deal. I couldn’t sing anyway. My friends Hector and Paty Lopez, two magnificent singers, called me and insisted me to just do it. Hector even told me to stop by the homeopathic pharmacy on the way to the location where the auditions were to take place (which was in the same old convent where I learned how to paint). So, again, I yielded and got up, took a shower and left. When I arrived, my friends were there with an attitude of overwhelming support. My throat

ALL HOPE WAS JUST A WEAK CONCEPT I WAS HANGING ONTO JUST FOR THE GRACE OF GOD. HOW I PRAYED!

cleared for me to sing an aria, sight read some musical passages, and just like that, a few minutes after the whole affair passed, my throat closed up again. I went home and slept with fever. The next day, I received a phone call from my friends to let me know that I had gotten the post of section leader of the sopranos. The position of conductor was bestowed to Harlan Snow, (I can’t stop crying now.)

He and his wife Joy had retired in Guadalajara from The U. S. Harlan was a doctor in music and voice teacher who had created a small choir in town, and later was invited to conduct the State choir. Joy too was given a part amid the altos. We started the same day, and he became my teacher and mentor.

I sat middle front, facing Harlan all the time. I was the soloist in most works we performed. After a few months one can say that he knew

I WAS IMMENSELY GRATEFUL WITH THE SNOWS FOR WHOM I WAS MAKING THAT TRIP. THEY BELIEVED IN ME, SO I HAD TO GO AND TRY ONE MORE THING.

me well. He noticed that I was grabbing my neck often. I did not want to think about it, but I knew deep down that I wasn’t well.

At the end of one day of rehearsal, he and his wife asked me to stay. He asked me when the last time was that I had gone to see a doctor, and why I was grabbing my neck so often.

The conversation was an uncomfortable one because I did not want to admit that I was still very ill. My hair was back, and I was in love. Who needs these shenanigans? Eventually I admitted that I needed to focus on staying alive. I conceded that I had to see my doctor and submit myself to more treatments.

I knew already from the last unsuccessful cycle that I needed a bone marrow transplant, and there was no other alternative; however, I was not a candidate anymore because of the damage done by the chemotherapy. Harlan knew it as well, but he was not ready to give up on me.

A few days later, he asked me to stay yet again after rehearsal. Harlan and Joy told me that I should go to MD Anderson in Houston for a second opinion. Sure thing! I had no money, nor desire to embark in such search for the impossible! No way! What for? But they had everything figured out. I was to travel to Texas at the beginning of August and that was arranged. I had nothing else to worry about. Except that I had already seen my doctors and they were not optimistic. This time around, with good advice and tons of help, I decided to change gear and went so see the best oncologist in town, Doctor Gilberto Morgan. A sweet and knowledgeable man that was the head of the oncology department in the Medical Center of Guadalajara. He told me that seeing a doctor in Houston was a good idea and that he would take care of me in this side.

About one week before my anticipated trip, Harlan hosted a master class in his house imparted by an important teacher who came from the U. S. A few of Harlan’s pupils attended the class and I was one of them. At the end of the class I stayed and had a chat with him. He knew about my situation and my upcoming trip. Among other things, he grabbed a yellow Post It note and wrote two names. No numbers, nor anything else. He said to me that if I was going to go to Houston, I should contact the people whose name were on the tiny piece of paper. I took it

and put it in the pocket of my jacket and forgot about the little yellow note.

A week later, I was flying to Houston. I was not excited, I was a little disillusioned, and just going with the flow. I was immensely grateful with the Snows for whom I was making that trip. They believed in me, so I had to go and try one more thing.

At my arrival I was to meet a person for whom I can never express enough gratitude, Judi Hoover. I had never seen her before, but she was waiting for me. She was my hostess, and she oversaw my stay. I trusted her, as I trusted Harlan.

We hit it off immediately. She was -and still is- sweet, funny and in command. During our conversation in the car, she asked me if I wanted to sing something and for someone. I did not, but didn’t say it. Instead, I reached into the pocket of my jacket and voila! There was the little Post-it note with two names and nothing else. She grabbed it, put it away and I forgot about it again.

The next day, we went to the hospital, and she took care of everything. We were waiting to see Doctor McLaughlin. While waiting for test results, I ordered tomato juice and sat down in the lobby. Judi said she needed to make a couple of phone calls and disappeared for about 20 minutes. When she came back, she had a big smile and said to me: You have an audition tomorrow at 1:00 at the university of Houston with Peter Jacoby, the head of the opera department at Moores School of Music. Peter was one of the names on the little note. Now, Peter was not supposed to be in town in the middle of the summer, let alone in his office. But he was there at the time when his phone rang. He did not want to answer, but he did. Judi asked him to give an audition to a complete unknown. That’s not the way it should be. The whole thing was even more interesting given that Judi had never heard me sing a note. Peter wanted to say no, but said yes, and there! It was arranged.

I saw Dr McLaughlin who said to me what I had already heard: that I needed a bone marrow transplant, and it was close to impossible because I was not a candidate, but this time it was different because the future had some resemblance to a shape. That appointment came and went as fast as a gust

ONE DAY, WHEN I WAS LOOKING FOR OPPORTUNITIES, I FOUND OUT THAT AMERICA’S GOT TALENT WAS GOING TO HAVE AUDITIONS IN HOUSTON.

of wind. But the next day, that day is eternal. I was still a little reluctant to sing. I did not have music with me, but Judi said: It is U of H. They have a huge library. And they did!!! I grabbed a copy of the arias I decided to sing, and we marched towards the studio where Peter was waiting. The pianist was Tim Hester, the head of the piano department. Just the best! I sang two arias and after that we had the most unbelievable conversation. Can you come? I might be able to get you a full scholarship... etc. I don’t remember the details. I just know that I had to live. I had to fight hard to remain alive! Did I have something to look forward or what?

The next year was intense. There were many more chemotherapy cycles to try to avoid the transplant. I was hooked to a hospital bed most of the time. But I kept singing. God used music to keep my hope alive. It was the end of October of 1999. I had a full scholarship waiting for me in Houston and I was to start in January of 2000. Dr Morgan did one more check and sent me downstairs with the radiologists without saying much. Mom walked with me into a circle of doctors. They said I still had a little nodule located in the neck, and that they were going to try to finish it with radiation. There was a caveat though: My vocal cords were going to be

severely damaged, and I wasn’t going to sing again. My whole world crumbled in a second. The question was not what I was going to do, but who I was supposed to become. Mom took my hand and said firmly: “Barbara, doctors are not God. If you want to sing, you must remain alive.” That was it.

I received radiation that burned through tissue, my hair fell again from half of my head, but I never lost my voice, praise God. I was traveling to Houston in January. My voice was intact. I had the most amazing semester that Spring. Learning, singing, living a life that I never even dreamed of.

During the summer of 2000 I had a relapse, the worst of all. The cancer was back in full force. Doctor Grey from the medical center of U of H gave me the terrible news and I couldn’t stop crying. I gave up. I remember thinking I wanted to go back to my mom and die. Peter and other beautiful angels in Houston did not let me give up. They offered me to pay for the transplant there in Houston. But I went back to Guadalajara promising them that I would fight.

I went back to treatments and finally Dr Morgan made the bone marrow transplant possible for me. I was ready for whatever may come. I faced the possibility to die, but I wanted to take the small chance to keep living. Against all odds, just for the Grace of God, I overcame. I received the transplant in December of 2000 and was flying back to Houston in January of 2001, never to relapse. I can tell you that my illness has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. The way God chose to build the rest of my life.

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT

Life after graduating was as ordinary for an opera singer as it gets. I auditioned for roles, and I got some. One must sing to pay for the next round of auditions in NYC, and you must adapt and better yourself constantly. One day, when I was looking for opportunities, I found out that America’s Got Talent was going to have auditions in Houston. It was an odd choice, but I decided to do it. The worst thing that could happen is that they said no. And suddenly, I found myself amid a myriad of acts trying for the biggest talent competition in the world.

I made it through all the rounds and ended up First Runner up. Yes! One of the most amazing and extravagant highlights of my life! After that, I had to change the way

I approached music in a major way. AGT opened an amazing and dynamic world which has allowed me to tell my story, to be closer to the audience than never before. I found out that music is limitless, and I can bring a lot more to people than I ever thought possible. This journey took me all the way to Abby Road Studios where I recorded my first CD, Barbara Padilla, accompanied by The London Symphony Orchestra.

JUAN GABRIEL

Juan Gabriel is the most prolific singer songwriter in the Hispanic world, bar none. If you speak Spanish, you know his songs, sometimes without realizing that they are Juan Gabriel’s. Yes, even opera singers know his music by heart.

After America’s Got Talent, my world expanded immeasurably. My then manager, Cristina Abaroa, introduced us through Maestro Eduardo Magallanes, the best arranger in Mexico and close friend to Juan Gabriel. We became very good friends fast. I was his guest artist for the last two years of his life. We toured everywhere. We sang in stadiums full of people, theaters, big arenas and he was just the best. Everywhere we went people sang his songs and the concert became a big party. He made people happy like no one else. He wrote a song for me which I sang at every performance I did with him, on his stage. Juan Gabriel became my teacher and mentor, but most of all, my dear friend. It is impossible to convey how much he influenced and inspired me. I promised him that while I had a voice, I would sing his music, because he is one of the greatest, and I will carry his music the rest of my existence. When he passed, I felt his loss with the whole world. It was unprecedented. I’m just in awe at the opportunity Heaven gave me by allowing me to call him my friend and mentor. So, from here all the way to paradise, my voice to you, my adored Juan Gabriel, until we meet again...

PROJECTS

Right now, I am working on some amazing duets with one of my dearest friends who has the most beautiful tenor voice ever, John Hagen, one the Texas Tenors. We were in the same season of AGT. We want to bring the music that everyone knows and loves. That song that brings you to a familiar place. My husband, Henry Van, is helping us with the arrangements. It’s proving to be a very exhilarating and wonderful project.

Horses Horses

FOR VETERANS

MAKING AN IMPACT FOR THOSE WHO SAVE

by Eli Guresh

Veterans and law enforcement individuals save our lives on a daily basis. Same with EMTs and many other blue-collar groups that train, live, and die for us. Based on the initiatives of therapy and wellness, the mind has always been a wonderful universe that few can understand, and experts have continued to study day in and day out -for ages -and for humanity. These therapies can be applied to the most interesting experiences, improving our mood, our hopes to live, and our desire to be understood amid a flood of contrarian scenarios. This is the mission of War Horses for Veterans.

When you walk into the facility headquarters in Stilwell, Kansas, you see plains of beauty hailing from the Midwest, where folks in the industries of agriculture, nature, and horses convey in one world. Yes, this is the horse country of the Midwest, and the non-profit established by Pat and Andy Brown is one of those unique American treasures so many people don't know about. Yet, it does exist, it does help, and it does change lives.

After interviewing the WH4V Executive Director, Bret Cortright, we understood the magic of what is going on in this area for citizens who struggle to keep living after deployment, after years of service, and after long hours of sacrifice, training, and working to save others. Other staff members we met were Jake Greenlief, Director of Operations, Case Manager Jessica Draper, Mental Health Coach, Sydney George, Kendal Gammon (Chief Development Officer), Joshua Schmied (Fractional CFO), among others.

Cortright talked to Art Bodega from Kansas City to expand on the mission and significant influence of WH4V:

How many people work for your organization?

We have between 10 to 12 people making it happen. It happens that we bring 5 participants for a weeklong program. That means we bring between 50-60 people a year. We also have one-day programs, where many people can participate in one day, which could be 12 people. We welcome anyone across the nation; they can fill out an application, and then the case manager can assist with finding the resources, maximize the veteran's benefit, and guide you through what you are entitled to use, at no cost to them. They can assist with daycare costs of whatever, and our case manager can get education and resources for them.

How did it start for Pat & Andy Brown? They started in 2013. They were doing it with small groups of people they knew and would just invite them to the pool house. These small groups would be invited here for a 3 to 4-day stay; they would stay in hotels, cook

Yes,

Yes, THIS IS THE HORSE COUNTRY OF THE MIDWEST, AND THE NONPROFIT ESTABLISHED BY PAT AND ANDY BROWN IS ONE OF THOSE UNIQUE AMERICAN TREASURES SO MANY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT.
WeLOVE THAT IS HORSE COUNTRY. YOU HAVE A LOT OF DIVERSITY, YOU HAVE DOWNTOWN, MUSEUMS, AND HISTORICAL SITES, AND IT'S BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME.

lunch at their home, and cater for dinners here and there, and it started growing. We were able to build the facility in 2019. We began in the fall of this year and finished during March of 2020, during Covid. When we launched it, we couldn't fly anyone. Hence, we invited first responders, EMTs, and policemen, as it was more of a local initiative due to the circumstances. That's how it all started.

What is the goal of War Horses for Veterans?

Are you building another barn?

Yes, we are building a 14-stall barn, mainly because we don't have the facilities to house all the horses. At the moment, the barn you see is only for temporary housing. It is very old (it dates from the 1800s) and has been exposed to the weather; it's rusted down. We can only use 6 of 10 stalls. We need better housing to build something that will last.

Do you guys go to Las Vegas? Do you compete at the exhibition programs for roping and more?

We pick veterans who have been through the program. We work with them throughout the year. We also work with professional trainers wherever they are, or we find in their area new trainers from Texas, Oklahoma, or anywhere.

We HELP THEM HOW TO NAVIGATE, WHICH IS PIVOTAL TO LEARNING, TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS TO SURVIVE. THE TOOLS ARE THERE!

How has this impacted their lives?

We get comments and testimonials before they leave, they text us an email and reach out, and we do have people who come back and just visit They just simply need a mental reset. They asked us: can I come down and check you out? It may be one person. They have found a true community, a good support structure, we are not like other programs, one and done, like checking the box on to the next; we want people to come back, we build a horse network- an online people page where they can submit resumes, get them resources out to people.

Why is Kansas so special?

I've grown up here my whole life... It’s the middle ground; most people are just everyday people making it through life at a slower pace. The seasons can be crazy: winters and summers, we are in the tornado alley, sometimes it can be 80 degrees, and the next day, there is freezing rain. We love that is horse country. You have a lot of diversity, you have downtown, museums, and historical sites, and it's been around for a long time. You can be driving through giant fields, and then suddenly encounter the border of another city

How do you keep the momentum of the organization?

We've seen growth as an organization, and we keep posting and announcing additional services that most don't know they can get. Being able to help a lot of people with PTSD after the war and the trauma is a big deal. But we don't stay there, sometimes this trauma goes beyond the home. You can be fighting with your spouse, using drugs, or abusing alcohol; we help them how to navigate, which is pivotal to learning, to develop the skills to survive. The tools are there!

How is your personal experience Bret? I was a participant. I was actually a drunk; I did struggle with alcohol, and to save my life and my family, I stopped drinking. I have been working for 20 years in the law enforcement field. I can tell you that on March 8th, I celebrated eight years of sobriety. Once I came here, I found a safe haven. I am hooked with the organization. I love the people that come through; when you put them on a horse, and you see the white knuckles finally coming to life, finally seeing a smile again and having some color come back into these individuals, you know this is the right thing to do.

We

BUILD

YOUR CONFIDENCE BY PROVIDING THOROUGH TRAINING OF BEING ON YOUR OWN WITH THE HORSE, NOT JUST RIDING A HORSE, BUT OF BEING AN EXPERT ON THE HORSE AND COMING CLOSE TO THIS EXPERIENCE WITH EXPERTISE. WE PROVIDE THE TOOLS FOR IT.

Is WH4V the only one of its kind in the country?

There are many Equine therapy non-profits around the country. But we are unique because we teach how to do mounting, roping, cutting cow, sliding, and spinning, and we push the envelope. We build your confidence by providing thorough training of being on your own with the horse, not just riding a horse, but of being an expert on the horse and coming close to this experience with expertise. We provide the tools for it.

What other events and projects are we expecting to happen here?

The Derby, our big Gala is coming up. We also have the Annual Roping and Roses, where people learn how to rope on dummies. It's cowboy casual but very cool. The important thing about what we provide is that experience, that wondrous journey of believing in yourself again, reminding you that once you had a wonderful youth when you had hope, and we transport you to those memories. The smell of the barn, the texture of the nose, the warmth of the horse. It's a very special thing.

LILLY KASSELMANN ECHANTS WELLINGTON

GENERATION ALPHA - LILLY

Lilly is of the Generation Alpha known for independence. The youngest Kasselmann of Hof Kasselmann, a synonym for elitelevel equestrian sport. Ullrich and Bianca Kasselmann, with their son Francois, have been training horses to the highest level for more than 30 years and established the Hof Kasselmann name as a world renowned brand. They are famously known the world over as the centre of expertise, heart and meeting place of international dressage in Hagen, Germany. The eldest granddaughter Emma at 13, loves show jumping ponies and horses like Francois, her father; her sister, Dressage.

When I met the charming sisters Emma, and 11 year old Lilly the summer of 2023 at their training centre and home, it made me wonder. Emma is successful in jumping ponies then, now competing horses. Her sister, Lilly loves dressage. Their mother Dianna, met their father Francois when they were young and

jumping horses. That summer I watched Lilly compete at a local show near Hagen. She was very serious, focused and impeccably dressed as she trotted down centre line in her children’s dressage class. Each scored movement seemed on point, all the way to the final halt and salute. She did not win that day, but very close. I tried to say hello, but best to give her space as she walked her pony to their trailer. Lilly immediately grabbed a bucket of water for her pony, kindly petting him with a hug.

Two years later, this season she is showing at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, I watched Lilly again, scoring the highest in the mid 70s percentile at the FEI CDI for children level classes.I find it so intriguing that the sisters both love horses like her family yet one does Dressage and the other Jumping They are a perfect pair for future partnership for the family business. I stopped to study how that could be. According to psychology theories,

“ TO LIVE IS TO DANCE... TO DANCE IS TO LIVE ”, SAYS CHARLIE BROWN.
WPB
Lilly wears feathers by Ingenue on

and article “Siblings Share Genes, But Rarely Personalities,” by Alix Spiegel I read.. “And when organisms compete," says a Darwin scholar Frank Sulloway, "there tends to be a phenomenon that Darwin long ago identified in the origins of species called the principle of divergence. The role of divergence is basically to minimize competition so it's not direct. And that leads to specialization in different niches.”

Then you have the Environment. ”Children grow up in different families because most siblings differ in age, and so the timing with which you go through your family's [major events] is different.” Finally, there is Exaggeration described in this article, whereby ‘the final theory is the comparison theory, which holds that families are essentially comparison machines that greatly exaggerate even minor differences between siblings. One may be considered an extrovert, and once the introvert label is assigned -- even if in an absolute sense it's not really true -- it influences the choices that the child makes.” All of this can be hog wash or nonsense, maybe it is just God’s choice of selecting our destiny. But what I see is two girls that are very supportive of each other and protective. It is awe inspiring.

Lilly is having great success on her pony, Charly Brown, with six wins in six starts here in Wellington. It’s not just a one pony show for her, last week she won on another pony named Vodka Soda also in the high 70’s percentile.Lilly has a huge heart and while she can be sweet and fun when not competing, she is not a pushover. As the younger sister, she will go head-to-head with anyone. Like an alpha mare, she holds her own to maintain her dominance. And usually with a roll of the eye, she need not speak up loudly or make a scene, she only has to stand tall and look you in the eye.

Emma Kasselmann Delights the Dressage World

I met Emma at her family’s Hof Kasselmann, sport horse breeding and training farm in the summer of 2023. Her family has been linked to the land in the idyllic Teutoburger Forest as far back as the 12th century. Can one in the United States even fathom that thought, when Italian Christopher Columbus discovered us in 1492 or the 15th century. I think few in this country live on their family land dating all the way back to the 15th century. Emma was then eleven, happily riding her jumping pony. She is the oldest of the two sisters. Then and now, I still see her eye always watching to protect her sister. At her home in Germany, there are always international clients and guests coming through her home. She has learned from a young age to be a wonderful hostess greeting the guests and many VIPs coming for entertainment dinners and business meetings with her famous grandparents Ulli and Bianca Kasselmann, as well as her own parents, Francois & Diana.

That summer, I was impressed as I am still today that Emma takes care of her pony and now jumping horse. Her parents teach that if you have animals, you must learn to care for them, from cleaning the stalls to feeding, to tacking them up. In Wellington, Florida, the winter capital of equestrian sport, the trainers here, keep the pony kids and juniors on a tight schedule by having their own staff do the care and tacking for the children and teenager clients who show up for their lessons and show times so they can meet the demands of their own regimented schedule.

It’s interesting that Emma has a love for show jumping growing up on a predominantly dressage sport breeding farm. Like her father, the thrill of flying over the fences on her horse now, you can see the joy in her eye, as well as the love for her animals. She is not spoiled like you might imagine. In fact, she is strong willed and will certainly be a leader in whatever she chooses for her future.

“Emma wants what Emma wants”, and best not get in her way. I say this in a kind way, because she is not rude or disrespectful, just very clear what she wants. Of course, by now knowing her strong family members, one can tell she is cut out to take over the Dynasty when her day arrives. Our Art Bodega shoot was not what we expected, thinking we were photographing Emma and her sister, two young girls. But cameras do not lie, and all of a sudden you can see the strength of her beautiful soul coming out. It was a fun day and Emma is such a beautiful girl inside and out. To watch her progress in her show jumping career is going to be exciting. She is already doing victory laps and recently was Reserve Champion at CSI* 1.25m in Horses & Dreams in Hagen, Germany.

“EMMA WANTS WHAT EMMA WANTS”

THE OLYMPIC TORCH is said to symbolize the light of spirit, knowledge and life. “The passing of the torch from one runner to another runner acknowledges collective human achievements as they move from community to community, spreading goodwill to all.”

Art Bodega December 2023 feature. I wrote this story featuring Francois Kasselmann, son of Ulli Kasselmann who built Performance Sales International (PSI) with his partner of over forty years, Paul Schockemöhle. The two men got together in 1980 and came up with the idea of a combined auction of their respective breeding farms, one dressage horses the other jumping to be held in America. The first event in 1981 became so successful that the men moved the auction to their German homeland. The young men in their ‘80s could not have predicted annual sales as high as $24 million realized in 2022. Francois took over the family business, including a robust strategy to strengthen their all ready strong ties with America. In 2021 and 2022 he took head rider Frederic Wandress with some of their top horses to Wellington. By 2023, Francois purchased their Hof Kasselmann USA based Wellington farm. All the pieces of the puzzle were coming together in 2024, with “Freddie” winning at the Olympics for a Team Gold, and the move of his family for now two winter seasons. The two daughters Emma and Lilly found how much they love American school coordinating back with their German teachers. And now 2025, five years in the making the beautiful light is touching the girls who are growing up in Wellington.
