“Imagine there’s no countries… Nothing to kill or die for… And no religion too… Imagine no possessions… I wonder if you can… Imagine all the people… sharing all the world…” John Lennon’s Imagine perhaps offers a close reflection of Kiet Cheng’s body of work. Kiet Cheng is interested in the coexistence space between humans, animals and nature. Her work explores the balance between her idyllic space and the reality of the world that are becoming more and more crowded. Her earlier work departed from an imagined utopia where she considered as no boundary between countries, no government, no power conflict, no religion, no money and no need for any law enforcement. All beings live according to the law of the nature in this condition. Kiet Cheng’s latest body of works (2013), include paintings, collage and sculptures, goes further to explore the law of the universe where all beings in this space go through the impermanent process of birth, aging, sickness and death. She uses images of humans, animals, flowers and plants to convey love, beauty, and life and death. For Kiet Cheng, beauty is impermanent but what is decayed is not necessarily ugly. However, unavoidably, we all have to live and cope with the acceptance of transience and imperfection. Kiet Cheng’s canvases embrace her sentiments and romantic feelings towards nature and her feelings are often catalysed or intensified by literature, poetry, music and theatrical drama. She uses various methods and combination of subjects to express her beliefs, hopes and fear that are comparable to the works of Romanticism artist Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) and Realism artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875). Imagine all physical things are impermanent and nothing that coexist with nature is forever. Eventually, all beings will become extinct, probably due to us exploiting our environment to such an extent, that we will not be able to survive in it any more. Kiet Cheng’s body of work does not provide a solution for the problems. Instead, it offers a balance by imagining peaceful coexistence as the way of life, where no one predates upon nature, upon animal and upon one another. However, one may question that if all physical things are impermanent according to the law of nature including an utopia, where else can we find an idyllic place if it is not from imagination?. - By Andrew Pok

Chor Shy Miin Shymiin’s work includes large scale drawings, paintings, intimate thread work and sculptural forms. She interprets the world through a 21st century lens using traditional materials and occasionally combining it with found & commercial objects. Her work often merges memory with narrative and often asks what it means to be beautiful. Her latest sculptural form uses raw clay and resin to give form to lines and register gestures that invoke memories and narratives.

Faizal Suhif My work combines the textural qualities of textile and printmaking processes, including mono prints and it is naturally sourced from mark making. It also features unusual viewpoint by depicting patterns of soil, landscape and floating seeds lurking within. There are images of seeds from different plant types. Its function is to learn the knowledge of God that gives us sustenance and greatness that time comes from just a tiny seed. A thousand seeds can be sown but there won’t be a thousand plants growing, shooting from the earth. Each opportunity given is a test to our faith. To me, this also tests the ability of our appreciation towards art and nature. By exploring the possibilities of mark making. I travelled to Singapore, Indonesia, Beijing, Turkey and some places in Malaysia to find accidental marking and textures from cement surfaces, soil, wall textures, trees and pedestrians. It was an interesting journey because each place gave a different marking. I’m working with the marks that can be achieved by laying items onto canvas and the very practical technique is by rubbing and rolling ink into the surface. Some of them are done with my exquisite marks that were formed by a mixture of planning which would evoke curiosity and randomness, which I feel is the underlying foundation of my work.

Keiong Chooi Ling Art is one of my languages for expression, it helps me to process my thoughts and feelings and interpret them non-verbally. I love the sparkles of fairy dust in normal life and the only way to achieve it is by making art. I always find inspirations through stories and fairy tales. I create stories beneath the layers of paints in my Fairy Tales series, stories that transmit me into the beauty of fairy tales as though there are real life adventures, waiting to be explored. My work encompasses figurative arts, using figures, especially children as the main subjects in my visual arts practice.

Liew Choong Ching For over 10 years, Liew has expressed his passion for the Southeast Asian cultural traditions. Inspired by Malaysian & Balinese subjects, Liew has been focusing on portraits and dances in his paintings since 2001. In exploring his personal feelings and desires in art, Liew has taken the unusual step to depict the aesthetic effects of martial arts. This led him to create his ground-breaking Shadow Boxing series in the year 2010. As a martial arts lover, Liew loves kickboxing. This series reflected his passion to combine the spirit of martial arts and fine art to represent the sparring of the human mind as we constantly battle within ourselves.

Ong Xing Ru I want viewers to understand my thoughts, expressions and ideas depicted through my paintings. I use human figures and paint them like animals as the core and the main character in my painting is animals. I use only simple but yet profound ways as a means of my expressions, which, like in fairy tales, lots of symbolism and surreal elements are shown through my paintings. Besides simplified shapes, images are created to deepen the atmosphere of my paintings. These props bring out the contents of my paintings.

Syahbandi Samat

Residing in a big city such as Kuala Lumpur has inspired me to explore and further advance my talent as a self taught artist. Initially in my early works, I concentrated much of my time on portraits and figures which I improved with time. I ventured into local folklores, myths, idioms, quotes, poetry as well as foreign fairy tales, translated them in my own versions. Given time and after more than 3 years of hard work, dedication and concentration, I started to understand and finding my own style of work. By using only ballpoint pen on canvas I try to go beyond the limit of a pen that is common use for writing into a medium that can produce beautiful and meaningful visual arts for all levels of people to see and appreciate.

biography

Syahbandi is a self-taught artist from Sibu, Sarawak and was born in 1992. He became one of the awards winning for the Malaysia Emerging Artist Award (MEAA) 2011. He is an unusual and a talented artist. Prefer to draw only using ball pen has brought him to a different level in the art industry.
