ismail latiff Melaka born artist who gained his formal training at Mara Institute of Technology, Ismail Latiff has shown his work locally as well as internationally. “ I embarked on a conquest of inner space, texture and colour bringing the beauty of the natural world indoor, that is transformed onto paper and canvas. I have explored my work in such a way which might lead to confusion and curiosity on the part of my viewers, I hope that the viewer will explore my work through his or her own individual imagination and perception of the world. I have arrived at my philosophy of life and work: Art is Life and one of the Best Introduction to Art is Nature.”

Ismail Latiff’s abstraction and mystical artworks have gained recognition locally and internationally. A graduate in fine arts, Ismail Latiff started his career in the advertising industry before becoming a full-time artist. Malaysian Art Writer Ooi Kok Chuen introduced him as “... one of the greatest escape artists ever to wield the brush. His is the realm of the enchanted and the enchanting, an utopian world built on love, beauty, purity and power.” Ismail’s works reflect a combination of movement, or gerak, a Malay word and mythology or sakti, a Sanskrit word. Unique to all his paintings, is the shape of a circle that is placed in the centre of each of his work. The circle according to Ismail, is a symbol of perfection and balance, and embodies his search for wholeness, and oneness with the cosmos.

jansen chow In Jansen watercolour works, he has pushed the watercolour medium to uncharted waters with several signature techniques like the stardust highlights, the sequin effect and a mock photographic (silver gelatin grain) in ‘freeframe’ stills. Some of his watercolour works are larger than normal and he likes the challenge. “The preparations are more important than the size”, he says, “Because even a small mistake can spoil it. The work has to be well thought out in terms of subject and execution with the larger watercolour paper ‘primed’ with gesso for layering as well as to make it thicker as if done by acrylic.” He also mixed the gesso with watercolour for the effect and uses bigger brushes than normal, and he likes to use more ‘dangerous’ colours and unconventional settings.

Jansen has always been very hardworking and always perfecting his artwork every time when he paints. From watercolour on paper to acrylic on canvas, his senses of creativity, thoughts and excitement are shown in his art. He always ask himself a question before he paint. “What is it about this scene that impressed me, and how I can convey my experience of it to the viewer? If a particular subject doesn’t result in a painting that excites me, then I abandon it because I believe that I have to impress myself first before I can hope to impress another.”

Lau wai leng I first came into contact with the largest wet market in Kelantan in 1997. Most impressed with the scene I saw – 90% of the workers and hawkers being women, I then decided to portray the women folk as due respect to their hardship and determination towards their family and society. I classify my work as realistic and have continued on to produce a tremendous number of “Market Scene” water color works since 1998 until 2002. Somewhere along the line, I wanted to experiment with different media to convey my subject matter; and I decided to use mediums like acrylic and oil. Finally, I chose to adopt oil as my major medium. In the meantime, I am always in touch with the countryside of Kedah as I love the view of the wide paddy fields; in parallel with the simple and unsophisticated life of farmers. They might seem to live a hard and laborious life, but inside they are happy and I can see satisfaction in them. Carefree and leisurely without pressure, that is the lifestyle which I too wish and hope for.

Ever since I became a mother, there have been many changes in me; in the things I do, and in each decision I make, there is now always a person that I place in consideration before myself. I have realized that it is not an easy task to become a ‘good’ mother, and in definite it takes a lot of sacrifices and understanding. But each time I see my baby smile, it is worth everything! In my own interpretation, this speaks the love of a mother. I would like to express my tribute to all women today who contribute their time, energy and love for their family, society and country as they make the world a better place to be in. This new impression is reflected in my latest work.

Lim Kok Peng Kok Peng wishes his art may probably go beyond the boundaries of the difficulty and the simplicity, should you look through the hard surface of art into its core value. That is how you can sense clearly what he wants to express himself through texture, colors and the composition. His works are to reflect his inner emotions as they depict the profound, mysterious and intense feelings. Kok Peng would release his inner pressure through his art, which enables him to relax not to push himself too hard.

His series of works displays the circumstances of life – the life goes on with an understanding in living life through our consciousness. His works, to some extent, give the feeling of positive, joy and relaxation. It is the truth that art basically comes from the way of life and the life is the mixture of life and art. Once an artist completely realizes such a truth, his life and works will become as one.

37

ng bee He work best with ‘abstract’ format which is a visual language of form, colour and line to create a composition which can be a degree of independent visual of the world. It is a form of imaginary art which can be partial or total accuracy.

Ng Bee’sworks derived from the phenomenon that is happening in our daily life. This phenomenon is evident in his painting of faces and the screaming faces tend to engage the viewers to ponder the source of this outcry. The faces are rendered in oil based cross-hatch lines which reveal his unique techniques in his ‘face job’ painting and also in his abstract, hippo and rhino series. The astonishing faces just penetrate towards the viewers in shocking coldness, lack of expression and they almost freeze the viewers to the bones. His art has emerged from his rich life experiences in society, politics and among ordinary people as his observations of the animal kingdom. His message is simple however, he says that people should never look back but only move forward into the future like rhinos who always move forward and never move back.

38

ng bee Ng Bee was born in Kuala Selangor in 1952. He graduated from the prestige’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore 1976 and Ecolle National Superieure des Beaux-Art, Paris in 1979 with a Degree in Fine Art. It was his first step toward bringing forth his inner creative forces. To him a wholesome living must incorporated into an artist life, balancing creative energy with a realistic day to day life. For the past 30 years, he has been actively involved in art and culture development in Malaysia by conducting workshops, art exhibitions and seminars. His passion in art did not stop him just to be an artist but creating and implementing creativity into his daily life. He sees art in all expect of existence; surrounding as well as from the inner self. Ng Bee is the one who initiated the formation of Sasaran Art Association in his hometown.

ong xing ru In this series of painting, I have used fables as a way of expression to construct the structure of my painting. I wish to use a simple yet profound way as a mean of expression to present the subtle interaction between every individual and a collective society. In between them, they unintentionally manifest behaviour of the unconscious mind.

Ong Xing Ru, investigates the world of cats – its politics, affairs and social status – and conveys it meticulously in the manner of magic realism, a technique favoured by the West in the early 20th century and regionally adapted by a number of Filipino artists. A prominent collector describes the process of her work as ‘tedious and time consuming’ and enjoys the results it brings as ‘cute and quirky’.

Quotes “ I am on a journey to discover the essence of innocent (childlike), intentionally breaking away from the mindset of grown ups in order to enjoy a true freedom”. “ When I was a child, I learn to lessons to survive in this world. Now I am a grown up, I am on a journey to discover the essences of being childlike so I may truly live”. “ I am now able to see the riddles and mysteries of this world through the eyes of a child”. “ Alone and wondering, when will my imaginative little friends pay me a visit? When they do I will paint them”.

57

queenie chow I had intentions to be an artist: It’s just that I have always been able to interpret everything and anything I see as a form of art. Art is a language I am most comfortable in conversing and communicating with the world. My paintings reflect the journey of life and I often find myself restlessly questioning the everconstant ramblings of the human mind. Thus this keeps me searching for meanings, values and ways of life. I think I paint the way a child would paint. It begins with a message, applying a stroke of color, with which I feel like the beginning of my journey, constantly and actively discovering, experimenting and exploring. Allowing imagination, openness, sensitivity and spontaneity to flow… The process is definitely more enjoyable, the end result more fulfilling and I am rewarded with the sense of contentment. Drawing and painting or building a sculpture seems natural for me. I am better at expressing myself through art. I believe words have limits and that many truths defy verbal explanation. I painted “Little Bonbon” (little children), as it is my spiritual journey to discover within me

the childlike values, of living life and finding true happiness. To me, little children represent one’s inner self. This is a place where one is most fragile and vulnerable. Grown-ups would most probably prefer not to expose it for he or she might not want to face the disappointment if what that is dear and essential in their heart would be taken lightly by someone else. I would like my work to be enchanting in its simplicity. The animated figures, childish yet soulful, shines through. The challenge is to make the characters come alive despite its non-realistic style. “I want to show the essence of a child, not much of composition of what they do. I think even if they are sleeping or sitting still, the postures and expressions speak, letting the simplicity, naivety and innocence which are so rich in nuance and narrative stands alone in my paintings. I used symbols, objects, characters, parables, figures and colors to represent abstract ideas or concepts. I use symbols, objects, characters, parables, figures and colors to represent abstract ideas or concepts. At times, I use harmonious moods to reflex the joy or contentment of one.

Sometimes, a sick child who needs help yet still optimistic; at times, puppets to represent the superficial and stage-like world, constantly proving their abilities and hungry for praises; a clown, intentionally, to break the barren grown up mind and culture. I use doves, cats, children, animals - depending on which suits me and when at different times, just simple pleasures of child. The little Bonbons are my reminder, comfort and courage. They are for me to hold on to childlike values, a contrast of grown up values. It is my intention to pass these messages to viewers of my art. Bring them beyond the little child figure paintings. My hope is that the little bonbons are an example of a learner as well as a teacher to the grown-ups, to get back to themselves. For we were all children once and some still keep a childlike spirit. Picasso once said “All people grow, those who don’t become artist. That is why I am an artist. You might think my art fitting for children, but you missed it. I am telling you that my art is a message for the grown-ups!”.

syahbandi Samat My artwork is more towards exploring the culture of people who believe in idioms, fairytales and quotes - things that will bring luck. I like to see the bad side and the good side of every story that I refer to as a subject of drawing. By using ballpoint pen on canvas I try to re-tell the stories in ways that are distinct.

tony ng Red bean has always been one of my inspirations. To me it symbolizes ‘Missing’ and it represents me. Red Bean series are always coupled with Nyonya tablewares as a concept or a story as a whole. Eventhough I do not come from Nyonya decendents, I chose Nyonya tablewares as it brings back my childhood memories of me and my grandma when I stayed with her during my younger days.

My grandma and I used to communicate in Hokkien dialect and in our dialect she does have some Nyonya accents to it. She uses a lot of Nyonya related tablewares and cookwares and loves to cook Nyonya food. I always look forward spending my time with her and enjoy chatting with her. She tells me a lot of her life experiences and how she enjoyed collecting Nyonya related pieces. These memories will always instil deeply in my heart and in my mind and for me, painting this series reflect how much I appreciate my grandma and my fond memories of her.
