BSB30-30th Anniversary Fan Tribute Boxset

Page 1

Autumn, 1996...

That’s when I became a fan of the Backstreet Boys.

On that fateful day in Rome, Italy, in a shuttle van on my way to middle school, a friend played Get Down on the stereo. My first thought was that it sounded like a cross between Boyz II Men & Color Me Badd. It couldn’t have been any blacker, until I saw the music video for it. Lo and behold; five young white dudes - AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson & Nick Carter - of diverse age, crooning and stomping to a clearly New Jack Swing-like beat.

... And I LOVED it!

My musical knowledge as a teen was limited to Michael Jackson primarily and the Europop sound of my environment at the time. I lived in Italy for most of my formative years and it was a rather eclectic experience in many aspects of my growing life, especially in music. Not long after I heard the Boys with Get Down coming out of their international eponymous debut album did I fully pay attention to boybands preceding and following them. Granted, the New Kids on the Block were already a thing before the Backstreet Boys were formed in 1993, but I could have cared less about them and the english groups that pretty much formed the soundtrack of my eight years in Europe.

Today, I hold those sounds dear to my heart and it’s thanks, in no small part, to the Backstreet Boys.

What makes this male vocal group unique? Is it their versatility of sound that has kept them busy for this long? Is it the fact that they’ve been duking it out for 30 years and not divorced due to ‘irreconcilable differences’? How about because they have the most loyal fans or that they command respect from their contemporaries? As a fan, I can concoct a number of reasons about what makes this group tick and succeed in their endeavors, even when the world is not watching. Really?

I can count the number of times the pop music world utters the tired (and annoying) phrase, “they are having a comeback” whenever the Boys release something new or going on tour. Of course, they cannot be blamed because the music world is a protean landscape constantly in flux and always searching for the next big thing. For the Boys, it was 1999. Their third album, Millennium (considered their sophomore outing in the United States of America), not only put the group on the map, but it made them overnight superstars and would put them on the path to being one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

What a reward for them! What a vindication for the fans who knew them before all that superstardom!

They cemented that success the next year with Black & Blue, but some of us could tell that the “next big thing” phase was and has always been an ephemeral enterprise for any artist to venture into. Not long after their greatest hits work, The Hits - Chapter 1 (which somewhat inspired this boxset) was released, an understandable hiatus seemed in order.

In 2005, the anticipation of anything new coming from the Backstreet Boys after a good 3+ years of rest was infectious. The biggest boy band was making a “comeback”. I confess myself a little let down when I heard Incomplete, their first single off of their 5th original album, Never Gone. Perhaps my musical tastes had not matured enough to accept the new alternative pop sound they were forced to go with, according to late admissions from bandmates years after the fact. All the new sound had to do was grow on me... and it certainly did. The new Backstreet sound carried over to Unbreakable two years later, only this time, to the sorrow of the fans, without Kevin Richardson. Whether it was the temporary loss of their fifth wheel for their next musical endeavors or the lack of publicity the group would experience for some time, it obviously did not slow them down. Kevin would eventually find his way back to the group after a well-deserved time of rest and creative sowing-of-oaths. He would accompany them on another journey of music history-making on April 22, 2013 when the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame while also celebrating 20 years together. That same year, they released In A World Like This, their first album as a quintet since 2005’s Never Gone.

It has been upwards for them ever since.

So, the question becomes how possible is it for a grown black man like myself - husband & father of four - remain a fan of the bestselling boy band of all time? Oh my!

I wish I had the most honest answer that will break through the usual noise of everyday music lovers. Perhaps it’s the same reason I am still a fan of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson... great music, and it so happens that they are, more or less, a set of good guys that I can tolerate for the next 30 years, I hope.

This is my humble artistic tribute to the Backstreet Boys. This is a salute to them for being the “last boy band standing”; for contributing to the soundtrack of my younger life; for sticking up for each of their convictions (even ones I wholeheartedly don’t agree with nor support), and for keeping the music coming as one of their songs reassures: “As longs as there’ll be music we’ll be coming back again!”

Here’s to keeping the Backstreet pride alive for 30 years and to 30 more.
