Maxime Maufra (1861-1918)

‘La plage de Kerhostin, Morbihan’ Oil on Canvas - 24” x 31” - Framed size: 32½” x 40½”- Signed

A native of Brittany, Maxime Maufra was not formally trained as an artist and at first worked in commerce, painting only in his spare time. Although he submitted two paintings to the Salon of 1886, he did not take up painting as full-time profession until 1890. In that year he made his first visit to Pont-Aven, where he met Paul Gauguin and Paul Serusier. Two years later he settled in Montmartre in Paris, with a studio at the Bateau-Lavoir. He continued to spend a considerable amount of time in Brittany throughout the early 1890’s, meeting several of the other painters working at Pont-Aven and Le Pouldu. Like Gauguin, Serusier and Charles Filiger, he contributed to the decoration of the inn of Marie Henry at Le Pouldu.

Unlike many of these artists, however, Maufra preferred to depict quiet, almost Symbolist landscapes devoid of figures. His friendship with Gauguin remained a close one until the latter’s departure for Tahiti, and the elder artist continued to encourage him in his work. Maufra spent his summers working in Brittany, a practice he maintained throughout his career, although he soon found Pont-Aven too crowded with artists and chose instead to live and work in more isolated communities, among fishermen and peasants. As Caroline Boyle-Turner has noted, ‘throughout his life, he retained his love of Breton subjects, exploring them again and again.’

Jean Baptiste Olive (1848-1936)

‘Paysage Marin’ is an exceptionally powerful work. Olive has visibly used both a brush and a palette knife. As on a painting palette, the painter has mixed his colours directly on the panel. The gesture is spirited and confident. Contrary to his habit, Olive did not prepare the panel; he painted this marine “in reserve”, leaving the support to appear in multiple places, playing with the colour of the wood. Olive would have applied his colours almost without any preparatory drawing or only after a quick sketch on the wood. Olive who was from Marseille adored the sea, he observed it all his life; he painted it like no one else.

In this intelligent composition, Olive shows his talent and knowledge of the Mediterranean Sea, whose colours vary according to the sea bed, the sky and the wind. The sea passes in front of and behind the rocks, the indented coastline causes the white foam that illuminates the painting. From blue to purple, from pure white to green, the waters are moving

Famously known as “the inventor of the pin-up” for his slender-necked, flawlessly sophisticated portraits of Parisian women from the 1920s. His works are a celebration of feminine beauty and elegance, with refined lightness and fluidity. Each painting captures the lavish stylishness of luxurious fabrics and accessories of the time. With a distinct style, his artworks were cherished during his lifetime, and are still honoured today.

Domergue refined his skills at the successful École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. At first, he was recognised for his landscapes, exhibiting his works at the Salon Des Artistes Français in 1906 at the young age of seventeen, then going on to win the Prix de Rome. Though, during the 1920s, he began painting Parisian ladies in his recognizable style.

Marcel Dyf (1899-1985)

Dyf decided in his early twenties to give up his career in engineering and become an artist. Throughout these years Dyf principally painted in three areas: Brittany, Provence, and the Ile de France, although he also travelled in Morocco, Venice, the United States, Holland and England.

His artistic legacy will be a lasting one; he painted the landscape of France with an intensity of feeling that entirely matched his personality and with a vigour that never tired. His life yielded a rich harvest of work whose quality, once established, did not dwindle in his later years. His art is youthful, yet traditional, with a sensational use of colour. His paintings give an outward appearance of being simple, undemanding compositions, but the process of creating them was exactly the opposite - it was complex, rigorous, disciplined, considered, measured. The final effect, though, is to produce an art form that is so disarmingly uncomplicated that it remains, as the artist wished, accessible to all.

Gabriel Deschamps (1919-2011)

Known for his expressive paintings of Mediterranean landscapes and serene village scenes. His paintings are distinguished by their impressive use of light and colour, capturing scenes of Southern France with spectacular quality. With an ability to bring an authentic sense of life to his paintings, he mastered and refined his skills to create pieces with fluid brushwork and vibrant hues. His evocative works are celebrated by a vast range of people, with his paintings being sold to many collectors in the United Kingdom. Deschamps was drawn to art from a young age, inspired by the works of impressionist and post-impressionist painters. He pursued his interest at the École Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, later becoming a State Art Professor and a regular exhibiter and member of the Paris Autumn Salon. He held one-man exhibitions in Paris, Algiers, Oran and Casablanca, as well as his work being represented in important private collections in Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, USA and Argentina.

Carlos Nadal (1927-1998)

Carlos Nadal spent the initial years of his life in Paris. There, his father, who ran a commercial atelier, had connections with established Montparnasse artists like Maurice Utrillo, Raoul Dufy, and Henri Matisse. This was a period crucial to his artistic development, when the young Nadal was exposed to Fauvist techniques that would influence his own artistic style.

In 1921, at the age of five, Nadal’s family relocated to Barcelona, where he honed his artistic skills. Nadal joined the Catalan artistic circle, Cercles Artistis de Sant Lluc, at the age of 16, which provided him a platform for artistic discourse and exhibition opportunities.

After the Spanish Civil War and World War II, Nadal ventured to Paris with a modest scholarship to study at the Academy of the “Grande Chaumier”. Paris at this time was undergoing a revitalization, and became a hub for artists and intellectuals who gathered in Montparnasse cafés to discuss new concepts and philosophies. Nadal further developed as a Fauvist painter during this time, applying these techniques to traditional subjects like still lifes, landscapes, and interiors.
