Don’t drag on dialogue with TTP

P

MEDIA WATCH

China’s terrorism problem

RIME Minister Nawaz Sharif appears to be optimistic about

re-

start of the apparently stalled peace talks with TTP. In an interview with BBC, he pointed out that some elements unhappy with the Taliban ceasefire were ‘neither our, nor the TTP’s friends’. He aptly described these elements as enemies of peace. We share optimism of the Prime Minister and hope that the dialogue process would move forward and taken to the successful conclusion. However, it is rather un-understandable as to why talks cannot be re-started when both sides are publicly committed to carry forward the dialogue. Issues like agreement on venue and date for the next round of dialogue are not big ones and these can be sorted out immediately if there is will and determination. The government has repeatedly made it clear that its preference is dialogue and use of force would be the last resort. People of Pakistan too had taken a sigh of relief when the two sides engaged in peace talks and their contacts ended up on positive notes. Declarations issued at the conclusion of the previously held talks were encouraging and sent right kind of message to all those who wanted peace to return to the country. No doubt, there must be something that is hampering resumption of talks but talks are always conducted with the spirit of give and take. It is understood that the issues involved are serious, critical and complex and they would need bold and imaginative approach to tackle them to bring much needed normalcy to the country, which is pre-requisite for implementation of the economic agenda of the present Government. The delay, however, doesn’t augur well for the process as there are forces inimical to peace and they might exploit the opportunity to derail it. They did so by launching attacks in Fruit and Vegetable Market and District Court in Islamabad as well as in Peshawar and they may repeat their efforts in a bid to create misunderstandings between the Government and the TTP. Therefore, we would urge the Government to remove bottlenecks expeditiously and resume peace dialogue without further wastage of time.

T

he management of roads is an art, rather than a trade, to ensure smooth and uninterrupted

traffic, through a well considered system of road crossings, U-turns, lane demarcation, cat’s eyes, reflectors, traffic lights, automated signals, etc. The concept of under-passes, overhead bridges, flyovers and by-passes is developed for the convenience of the commuters in the over populated human settlements, towns and cities. Unfortunately in the countries like Pakistan, state of the art roads are built by spending billions of rupees, but are not allowed to be used by common people. You will see police pickets with undue blockades in the name of security; the situation is further aggravated at rush hours in mornings and afternoons at the beginning and closing of the schools, colleges and offices. The poor police officials deployed at these pickets, tired of and fed up with their thankless, useless and aimless deployment in severe cold and hot weather and also till odd hours, develop a special psyche of perversion and sadism; and feel pleasure in seeing the people suffer; hence greater the rush, smaller the drive way. To add insult to injury, the U-turns provided for genuine reasons have also been blocked by placing heavy concrete structures. People are facing a great trouble because of these U-turns blockings. Petrol, diesel prices are too high that it is now very difficult for a person to pay for that. One who has to go to a place near home has to face many hurdles while driving on road and that is because of the blocked U-turns. Traffic remains stuck for hours because various crossings and U-turns have been permanently blocked. If the government can’t facilitate people then please don’t increase their problems. I have myself seen the people caught in traffic blockades become restless, full of anxiety, impatient, intolerant and ready to break the traffic rules to reach the destination in time. I saw a private taxi driver with tears in his eyes while talking about the long journeys due to blocked u-turns and expensive petrol and rarely available CNG. Had the government or the traffic police followed the traffic rules, allowed the people to use the beautiful roads and managed the traffic as per law, there would have been no need to go for expensive political projects like metro bus service in Islamabad. It is good but it is too big a project for a poor and economically starved country like Pakistan. Please create convenience for the people, allow them to move freely in this beautiful country with beautiful roads, remove hurdles facilitating them to save fuel for themselves and for the country, protect them against mental strain and stress, tension and road related worries. They are already hard pressed due to sky-rocketing prices of essential items, please don’t add insult to their injuries. —Via email informed debate. New technol- of illiterates entering the field. Kaneria loses HC battle against ban

LONDON —Former Essex and Pakistan cricketer Dan-

ish Kaneria has lost a High Court fight with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The player was given a life ban after a disciplinary panel concluded that he had encouraged a team-mate to under-perform by deliberately conceding runs during a limited overs game against Durham in 2009 and brought cricket into disrepute. The decision was upSana Mir of ZTBL and Kainat Imtiaz of Omar Associates receiving winner trophy from Chairparson Women Wing Bushra Aitezaz and Noureen Khalid of Faysal Bank.

held by an appeal panel in 2013. But Kaneria decided to take High Court action claiming that the ECB appeal panel had been wrong to uphold the life ban and wrong to order him to pay ECB legal costs of £200,000. A High Court judge dismissed those claims at a hearing in London. Mr Justice Hamblen said the appeal panel had not exceeded its powers and there were no grounds for suggesting an error of law had been made.—INP

Younis given second term as coach Waqar can pull Pakistan back on track served as bowling coach of the Pakistan side in 2006-07 ISLAMABAD —Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis

has been appointed national coach for a period of two and briefly in 2009, and as head coach in 2010-11. “I am extremely pleased to have been selected as the years. He will join the team in June, having previously head coach,” Waqar said. “My immediate aim would be to prepare the team for the upcoming busy cricket season including the next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.” A committee comprising Intikhab Alam (director domestic cricket operations), Haroon Rashid (director game development) and Moin Khan (chief selector) met today in Lahore to review the applicants for the coaching job and “unanimously” recommended Waqar, a choice that was endorsed by the PCB chairman. After Dav Whatmore’s contract with Pakistan ended in February, Moin, who had been the team manager, was named coach and was in charge until the World Twenty20 in April, when the same PCB administration under Najam Sethi that had appointed him, gave him the dual roles of team manager and chief selector of the national team. Waqar had previously quit as Pakistan coach reportedly because of personal reasons, but his differences with former captain Shahid Afridi were a factor during Ijaz Butt’s term as PCB chairman. When asked last week if he was okay with working with Afridi, Waqar said: “Pakistan cricket is like my family and differences aren’t the end of life, so things get better. I am here to serve cricket and want to MUMBAI: Varun Aaron bowled with pace and picked up a wicket during Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers return what I have learned from my playing career.” Bangalore, IPL on Tuesday. During Waqar’s previous stint as Pakistan coach between March 2010 and August 2011, Pakistan endured several off-field controversies - the spot-fixing scandal in England and Zulqarnain Haider fleeing to the UK mid-way through a tour - but their performances were satisfactory. They drew a Test series against South Africa, won one in New Zealand and reached the semi-finals of the 2011 World Cup.
