Camp ARTumpka June’s Fun

Day camps are already available in all flavors and locations…or are they? “Certainly there is a need for an artsfocused day camp that encompasses and presents all the arts—from music to pottery,” the Brainstorming Committee at ARRAC (known as “Brainers”) decided. Last February we enthusiastically dove in to the planning process. Little did any of us know how things would turn out! We now have one week of Camp under our belt and aside from being tired, we have a wonderful feeling of having sown (and sewn) some great seeds into our inaugural group of Camp ARTumpka campers. Over the course of five days we presented opportunities to try to play the ukulele, learn to sew a yo-yo, paint a mural, design a t-shirt, make a clay percussion instrument, and tell a story with your hands while dancing. Parents and honored guests got to witness the closing presentation at our last day (see page 2), but we invite you to view the slide show on skydrive or check our Facebook page. A picture is worth a 1 000 words… Alabama River Region Arts Center

Percussion rattles and air-dry clay tiles were the result of two days in the Pottery Studio (Above, and below, left). Below, two campers worked on the collaborative canvas; the results appear in our masthead at top of page.

News from The Center

ARRAC receives grant from Elmore County Community Foundation May 15 was the Elmore County Community Foundation grant awards ceremony at Lanark. It was a big day for the Arts Center with an award of $2500 for a childrens' arts camp. Accepting the award (at left) were ARRAC Board members Marty McIntyre, Theresa Wayne and Marilyn Winborn. The Camp was a creation of the Brainer Group with the grant request being written by Theresa Wayne under the ECCF's grant guidelines. ARRAC’s plans for hosting a chidrens' Art Camp, called Camp ARTumpka, includes the goal of introducing campers, ages 6-1 4, to a variety of arts such as music, painting, t-shirt decorating, sewing, clay and other various arts. Thanks to ECCF for their faith in our mission to bring the arts to the River Region community.

ARRAC's Theresa Wayne, Co-Executive Director, with finished mural

ARRAC Hosts Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce members met May 8 at ARRAC for Business After Hours. For some it was a trip down memory lane, as they once walked the same hallway as a high school student. Chamber guests explored classrooms and the pottery studio, and heard about the upcoming Camp ARTumpka. Culinary delights were prepared and served by Vanessa Bordlee; ARRAC members provided punch and tea. A free membership at the Arts Center was won by Carl Bledsoe during the raffle. And FOR FUN, all attendees were invited and many participated in a collaborative painting of the Bibb Graves Bridge. The painting was based on a reference photo taken from the northwest riverbank and an outline was transferred to a 36" x 44" canvas by Theresa Wayne, Co-Executive Director. The finished painting now hangs in the Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce and will circulate among participating Wetumpka businesses. At a later date, the painting will be auctioned for a community project. If your business would like to participate in displaying this painting for a month or two, please call Vanessa Lynch, WACC Director.

Three Seasons Arts League meets at ARRAC…to paint! TUESDAY, MAY 22, Three Seasons Art League met at the Arts Center to paint their own collaborative mural. The abstract design was of their own creation. They supplied their own brushes and paints, while Frank Sullivan, ARRAC Board member, had built the frame, which Theresa Wayne stretched with canvas and primed. It was truly a collaborative group effort from many hands. Collaborative art projects may be a fun activity for your group. Call for more information, 578-9485. ONE ARTS CENTER’S TRASH is another artist’s bird feeder. We artists are very frugal people. We supported “green” even before it was popular. We paint outdoors (“plein air”). Our studios are often unheated or uncooled garages or attics. We keep our art supplies forever. We collect odd things for use in sculpture projects...before we know it our spouse refers to our creative stash as “junk.” Yes, even an Arts Center must clean out the unused items, which is precisely what we did May 12 at our Indoor Yard Sale. We made over $300 while we disposed of many things and were overjoyed when our customers told us what they planned to do with their new-found treasures:

Music Arts News

Sunday Special 2 ARRAC’s second Sunday Special was well received by our loyal audience. Performing Sunday May 6 in the Wetumpka Performing Arts Center were: Laurie Harris on guitar; Home Remedy; Reborn Harmony; and Grace Point Praise Band of Grace Point Church in Wetumpka. Four groups brought their sound equipment and friends and family along with their abundant talent to the ARRAC fundraiser. This was a great opportunity to not only showcase many different types of gospel-praise music to the community, but it was a chance to fellowship with others and meet new friends.

Keep watching for our next Sunday Special Concert Series production. If your group would like to perform for these fundraising events, please contact Jerry McRay, Board member and Music Committee Coordinator at jwmcr7158@yahoo.com for more information. We are planning our next event for August.

Bluegrass Under the Old Oak Tree While April and May's Jams were indoors, June’s Bluegrass Jam took place under the old oak tree in ARRAC’s front yard. It was a beautiful day and chairs were toted outside to take full advantage. Bass, mandolin, guitar, resonator guitar, banjo and fiddle players all showed up. Join us next month, first Saturday, July 7th, from 9 am – 12 pm. All acoustic players are welcome, any skill level.
