The River Region's Friendly Place for the Arts

Many Hands Can Make One Masterpiece

Great ideas strike in the middle of the night for some people, in the shower for others, or perhaps while driving. Sometimes, however, you don't even realize a great idea has alighted, until it is done. Such is the case with our MUGS Fest collaborative mural project. We had no idea it would unleash such creativity from so many people! Theresa Wayne chaired and facilitated this project down to the cleaning out the paint brushes. She provided a primed and roughed in the mural (see left) for the MUGS Fest visitors to use as a foundation for their painterly ideas. As the time-lapse photos depict on our web site (www.arrac.org) things change fast when there are a lot of artists involved. The younger artists had an opportunity to watch others paint or to sketch their ideas before addressing the palette. Learning to work with what was already there and grow from there while still respecting others' work spoke life and art lessons on multiple levels. Learning to draw mugs took some time, as did learning to don and remove a smock! At the end of the day, we at the Arts Center knew we had helped plant big seeds, by providing an opportunity to create a unique collaborative masterpiece from a community of new artists. We couldn't have asked for a better day!

FILMS

Austin Thompson coordinated the film shorts for MUGS.

FUN! Films, Food, & Fun!

FOOD

Top; early afternoon, Greenville resident, Mary Brown quickly stirs her 15-bean soup with chicken and turkey in one of her hand-formed micaceous clay pots. Mary's micaceous pots are available in the ARRAC gallery for purchase. Above; Vanessa Bordlee kept the healthy waffles coming (for recipe see page 6) all morning.

An irresistable combination. The weather was threatening at times, but the artsy-fellowship and hot ocoa was warm and inviting indoors at the Arts Center. "What is 'MUGS Fest'?" we were asked. It was many things depending on what room you happened to be in! It was painting a collaborative mural project in one room and sewing penguins in another. It was having a lively discussion regarding the chemistry of clay and glazes in the pottery studio, while the chemistry of different grains was discussed in another. It was all about "making-up-good-stuff." To close the day we watched film shorts that other artists and students from around the world made, and we all applauded the good stuff they made. In short, MUGS Fest was about making friends through the arts, and that, my friend, is good stuff!

JoAnn & Lisa Bailey supplied samples of J & J Berry Farm's fruit jams as perfect toppings to hot waffles.

UPDATE/JAN. 2012

Memberships are due!

About Us

The Arts Center is a volunteer based, community

supported organization that derives its funding from public and private donations, contributions, grants,

benefactors and the proceeds from memberships, Artist Space, Rentals, Gallery Art Sales and special events.

If you have not already done so, don't delay in taking action on sending in your 2012 membership to the Arts Center. Our new membership flyer (available online, or stop by the Arts Center) is easily filled out to specify your particular passion in the "arts." The arts covers a broad range. Here at the Arts Center we see our mission as being that of an encourager and nurturer to help you develop your passion. We have many opportunities for you to get involved: write for the Update, enter information in our data bases, fix shelves, etc. There is always something to do on our "to-do" list. There is a role for everone. We believe that growing a community-supported and community-needs driven arts center benefits everyone in the community. A positive, diverse arts environment in a town functions as a culture magnet to maintain and to draw new businesses and families. A healthy collaborative arts community reflects on everyone in the River Region.
