BIOGRAPHY Education & Training Jorge Mario Castillo Velasquez (Colombian) started his studies in Architecture. During his bachelor as a highly passionate designer, he acknowledges the importance and inference of the structural component into architecture. For that reason, he complements his vision as an architect with Civil Engineer, both bachelors, studied at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota. That combination has given him a clear comprehension of architecture from the engineering perspective and vice-versa, including the challenges and opportunities that each approach bring to any project.

With more than 15 years of professional experience as a Designer, Architect and Civil Engineer, he has developed a high sense of creativity, innovation and self-criticism in the process that involves design thinking, technical solutions, integration and collaboration.

This knowledge has been applied in all the stages of the process, especially in projects related to architecture and interior design.

Now after studied the Master in Design Innovation and Technology at RMIT University. He has evolved this passion to the Speculative area, including biological, parametric and interactive design, emphasising the design thinking in the application of new methodologies and technologies and its solution in the social and environmental challenges.

This compilation of projects in this portfolio showcases my vision and abilities acquired during my journey as an architect and civil engineer with more than 15 years of experience working in different areas of design.

These skills and thinking are compiled in the following projects, organized according to my developing process of any design project. From Speculative projects exploring Biodesign that include parametric design and new technologies, Architectural design competition until built spaces responding to different social and cultural activities are part of the repertoire of the work done during my professional life.

This folio also describes my current approach to the field incorporating new technologies, methodologies and thinking into the design process.

This integration developed my vision of interpolating different knowledge to pursuit holistic solutions for the design challenges face in the current world.

SYMBIOME Symbiome is an architectural concept that was originally developed at the start of the year by a partnership between RMIT School of Design, Master of Design Innovation and Technology (MDIT) and School of Fashion and Textiles Bachelor of Design (Fashion).

Under the supervision of RMIT School of Design, Industry Fellow Lecturer Dr Ollie Cotsaftis and material scientist and artist JJ Hastings. in June 2019, we presented Symbiome at both places, Parsons School of Design and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. Where it was named as a finalist of the 2019 Biodesign Challenge.

Symbiome was developed by: Jorge Mario Castillo, Tria Amalia Ningsih, Elaine Regina, Wai Yin Tat during the first semester of 2019 in the Subject Biodesign.

SYMBIOME

Inspiration Behind Symbiome Symbiome is a breakthrough architectural bio-system using both biodesign and biomimicry to promote Mangrove regeneration in the megacity of Jakarta, Indonesia. Its purpose: to raise awareness on, and address Jakarta’s main environmental concerns: floodings, city sinking and water pollution.

The building’s architecture works as an artificial mangrove protecting the city from sea floods and rising sea levels. Replicating the role of a natural mangrove forest, it desalinates and filters seawater, and provides a substitute for city groundwater consumption. If implemented at scale, it could also help rebuild Jakarta’s shoreline and restore the native flora and fauna.

With Symbiome —a symbiotic relationship between an architectural building, its residents and the natural environment—we aim to restore Jakarta’s marine biodiversity and ecosystem, create new models of urban sustainable living, and design a new landmark for the millenary-old city of Jakarta.

SYMBIOME

Architecture Behind Symbiome The architecture of Symbiome takes inspirations from mangroves. With a distinctive organic shape and the ability to retain form against rising sea level and floods. In a way, the building can be considered as a synthetic mangrove that accomplishes the purposes of the real ones. The difference is, it can be built in a shorter period.

The mangrove tree is divided into trunk, roots and canopy, and each element has its specific functions. Symbiome is mimicking the proportion, aesthetic and features of these elements. Allocating architectural and functional elements in the superstructure (Livable spaces, contention structure, greenery, recreation and public spaces). That creates better environments, which will enhance human activities and experiences within the building.

SYMBIOME Science Behind Symbiome

Symbiome is implementing a Photosynthetic Microbial Desalination Cell or PMDC system which will work as a bio-battery.

The PMDC consists of three parts, the middle part which is a desalination chamber, where the seawater is filtered, an anode chamber on the left and a cathode chamber on the right. The chambers are separated by a membrane that allows specific charged particles to pass through. In the anode chamber on the left, a bacteria called Geobacter breaks down the organic compounds in the seawater to generate electricity, and as such, it attracts negatively charged particles.

These negative charges are transported to the cathode chamber on the right, where it mixes with the oxygen produced by algae, to attract positive charge particles from seawater.

PMDC is a seawater filtration system that generates electricity and produces oxygen to support the system itself.

BIO-CITIES Bio Cities: Bio Melbourne is the exploration and application of the Biodesign on an urban scale. This project was divided into three stages.

The first stage was the development of the project 26ºStreet during the semester. This project was a group development in which I were involved in all the stages of the process. The second was the contest Evolo 2020 in which Heliotrop evolve to be presented in this international contest. In this stage, I was in charge of 3D modelling and rendering. Finally, the Bio-Cities Exhibition was a compilation and evolution made by Dr Ollie Cotsaftis in which this two project was re-developed and re-design to be presented in the Melbourne design week 2020 under the concept of Bio-Cities-Bio Melbourne.

For MDW 2020, the Design team was lead by Dr Olllie Cotsaftis and collaborated by Jorge Mario Castillo Velasquez, Suri Aldina Ilham, Tria Amalia Ningsih and Shimroth John Tomas.

BIO-CITIES Concept Behind Heliotrop

Speculative Design.

As part of understanding and explore future architectures, the speculative design promotes the exploration of solution for a plausible future. That is estimated and projected analysing the current situation and understanding the evolution of the context.

For that specific project was the Climate Crisis as an engine to re-think the cities.

This design was located in Melbourne CBD and the proposal questioned the sense of the urban centre and how it can be renovated bringing back the habitational spaces into the business area. That renovation brings new problems such as the energy consumption and the heat island effect and this project to propose a bio solution for these issues.

Heliotrop literally means to move towards the light. It is a speculative and discursive architectural response to today’s societal and environmental challenges. Designed for respect of, and symbiosis with all the forms of life, it shapes a new cultural narrative by remodeling and repurposing an existing corporate tower in western urban center.

Overall, the architecture is designed to perform as an integrated Biosystem. Heliotrop is essentially a Bio-battery enabling the capture, storage and on-demand recovery of energy. Thanks for the combination of emerging organic material and microorganism-based technologies, the building is self-sufficient from an energy standpoint.

Fed by the sun and functioning as a suite of floor-based micro-grids, the building can generate more energy than it will consume over its lifetime.

As such, Heliotrop is a breakthrough carbon-negative bio-skyscraper suited for high-density urban environments and 21st century narratives.

BIO-CITIES Bourke Street Mall

26º Street & Bio-Cities This part of the project explored the possibility to humanize and revitalized the street level in harsh climate conditions caused by the increase of the greenhouse effect and the heal island effect. 26º Street In term of the architectural proposal, the project evaluate and explore the possibility to think the street in different level utilizing the spaces in between buildings to improve human interaction in Bourke Street Mall. For that reason the creation of the amphitheatre, a conjunction of the values of street performance in a green space that will enhance the street into the next level.

BIO-CITIES The Exhibition

Bio-mimicry Using bio-mimicry the Design of the Moss Pod inspired by the cellular structure of the moss. , the surface of the pod was arranged using this biological pattern to be cover with moss, this treatment can reduce the temperature in the interior of the pod.

Exhibition Bio-cities The presentation was run during the Melbourne Design Week 2020 and exhibited in Neon Park Gallerie. Bio-Cities showcased as a concept of a sustainable and resilient city using Bio-Design. The Exhibition organized using one poster that showed the master plan of the project, two videos and two models.

REPLAY BOWLING This project is the result of an outstanding idea to create, and indoor amusement park able to integrate the entire family in one place among the entertainment. For that reason, the design organizes the park’s activities in a way that it can participate from young users to adults in the same space but also giving identity to each specific age and activity.

The parks are compound of a variety of attractions such as Bowling, kiddies, redemption games, video games, playground, soft plays, indoor gokarts, jumping and food areas.

The design concept generates dynamics spaces for entertainment targeting different clients ages using forms and colours allowing children to fell in a kids park and adult in a mature space.

What is Replay Bowling ?

Replay Bowling was a new park’s concept that amalgamates the family’s laces thought the game. This park was designed to create an atmosphere that can be adapted to a wide range of age. This concept allows all the user to enjoy different activities in one place.

Go-Kart Track To make a challenging Go-kart Track was necessary the incorporation into the design of a mezzanine that increases the length of the track. That mezzanine also brought a new technical and structural challenge into the project.

YARD HOUSE The “Yard House” was the result of the design for the Rojas Family’s summer house. The design fallows the construction and design codes requested for the administration and the local construction office. This project was developed in both architectural and structural stages and the design mix both concepts to create and open areas and clean spaces.

The house was designed based on the idea of temperature control. It was considerate the position of the sun for the location of the windows and the apertures, open spaces and the high ceiling was designed to allow better airflow and ventilation.

In the middle, a central yard works as a node to organize the activities of the house around this green and thermal space.

YARD HOUSE Furniture as a complement

Design and Form Concept The design was thinking to organize all the activities of the house around the interior yard.

That is tanking as a concept of the colonial houses in the area.

That internal garden also brings freshness into the house allowing the wind to go through the house and ventilate all the areas and spaces.

Proposal for the complex The house was designed preventing the concatenation of houses in the entire complex.

That will create a bigger garden in the middle of every two houses, allowing also, the integration with the neighbours and bring the concept of community to these leisure houses.

SOFTWARE ONE This project was the result of a process to design a new workplace of this software company, which like software were in constant evolution and growth. For this project, the big challenge was to design flexible spaces and elements able to adapt due to the constant growth of the company.

Besides the design concept, the construction process had to fit in that adaptive concept allowing build the office in parallel to the normal activity of the company.

The design of the office created dynamic, clean and bright spaces for the employees, with a clear connection and distinctive hierarchy besides of a wide variety of meeting rooms and the social and interactive area which promote the increases in the productivity of the company due to the wellbeing of the employees.

SOFTWARE ONE Organizing the Project

Construction Plans This project was designed in different stages and growth at the same time that the client does. This condition brought a new challenge to re-design, re-utilize, re-incorporate and re-interpreted the client during the time. That company started with a small area an only some employees, and finalize almost double the occupancy of the office.

That development was done without sacrifice the quality of life of the employees.oductivity of the company due to the wellbeing of the employees.

SOFTWARE ONE Furniture as a complement

Furniture Architectural project has to be understood as a whole. The need to incorporate the interior and industrial design into the final design is vital to create a unique congruent design language among all the space. The furniture design is a vital part of this kind of projects and enhances the experience of the users within the space.

Kitchen Design Part of the cultural environment in the office, and to enhance human interaction and wellbeing in the workplace is the communal spaces. The kitchen space was designed taking into consideration the social factor of the food and sharing to bring welfare to the employees.

Lobby Design The lobby is the face of the project. This space has to be clear and promote an idea of the vision and mission of the company. This area has a huge value because is the first impression for any future client and also is the node that organizes almost all the activities in the office.
