SENSE BARRERES

EMBT Worshop - academic

Plaça Salvador Seguí, Barcelona 2013

The Plaça Salvador Seguí is located in the Raval neighborhood, known for its diverse immigrant population from countries such as Pakistan, Morocco, India, and the Philippines. To enhance the area as a cultural and tourist hub, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona and the Film Library have recently opened there. Despite its potential, the neighborhood has been perceived as unsafe.

The main objective of the intervention is to reconnect the square with residents, fostering a sense of belonging Salvador Seguí, a notable figure in the labor movement, inspired the establishment of the Salvador Seguí Foundation for social work To bridge residents with the city and Catalan culture, the proposal includes hosting events, such as Catalan language classes, facilitated by Casal del Raval, which supports underprivileged youth

In terms of design, the furniture in the square is inspired by Joan Brossa’s "Poema visual transitante," blending letters from various alphabets to symbolize cultural integration and celebrate Catalonia's independence Additionally, audiovisual elements will adorn the film library’s façade, featuring video mappings that depict Catalonia’s history and the significance of September 11. The urban furniture will consist of mobile metal and wicker benches, promoting playful arrangements and community engagement, ultimately creating an inclusive space that transcends physical and cultural barriers.

CONCEPTUAL COLLAGE

RE.CO

Undergraduate final project - academic Santa Maria, RS 2016

REuse + COcriate

The idea for the project came from observing vacant land in the city - places that used to be old houses that were demolished to become new real estate developments - that meanwhile were being used as parking lots.

The concept develops by emphasizing the importance of utilizing underused spaces in urban areas for temporary activities. This promotes a sense of ownership among residents, as they can transform these spaces into vibrant community hubs by enhancing community engagement This solution is presented as a viable alternative for it allows temporary activities to fill gaps while waiting for long-term implementations This approach encourages community participation and fosters a "do-it-yourself" attitude among residents, enabling them to actively engage in their environment by enhancing local businesses

The ephemeral structures allow for flexibility and adaptability. The base modules are 6x3m in size and can be expanded. They are ephemeral structures whose initial objective is to house new local businesses, but this use can be diversified. In different contexts, such as health care or education in remote locations or emergencies, they can be quickly assembled and easily moved.

VILLABOIM SQUARE

Praças team - professional São Paulo, 2018

The project focused on revitalizing our community square to make it an enjoyable space for everyone. We began by assessing its condition and identifying community needs.

In 2013, residents united to save a vital tree, igniting community engagement and fundraising for the square's improvement. Initial efforts included maintenance and gardening, but our vision expanded to a major renovation.

Before these changes, many people used the square merely as a shortcut Our outreach revealed important issues: elderly residents avoided the area due to poor maintenance, and only 1% of users were children, indicating a lack of play spaces Safety was a concern as well, with only 24% of visitors being women

The historical fig tree became central to our revitalization plan We created a visual diagram outlining key enhancements: new benches, improved sidewalks for accessibility, inviting areas for community interaction, redesigned tree bases, an upgraded children's play area with safe equipment, and modern bike racks.

Through community collaboration, the square reopened on December 2017, becoming a lively, familyfriendly destination!

CHIL

E HOUSE

Residential project to renovate and expand an existing country house.

The necessary changes involved adding a suite and a shared bathroom. The original floor plan featured compartmentalized spaces so we opted to merge the living room with the dining room and kitchen, seamlessly connecting it to the newly added covered area.

This expansion provides space for outdoor barbecues and entertaining friends, while enjoying a picturesque view of the lake

During the project's execution, while removing the existing PVC ceiling, we recognized the potential to modify the roof's structure for a more inclined angle

This adjustment allowed us to create a mezzanine because of a higher height and by utilizing the framework of the expanded covered area it was possible to develop a balcony that offers stunning views of the horizon, providing a tranquil retreat where one can unwind and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

R HOUSE

This residential project is designed for a family of five. We explored the angular shape of the lot by positioning the house to align with the main street while extending it along a perpendicular axis.

The social spaces are located at the front of the floor plan, featuring a living room that integrates with the kitchen and dining area.

This space extends to a deck that includes a barbecue area. Access to the laundry room and storage room is provided through the garage, along with a secondary entrance to the kitchen

A discreet passage leads to a private hallway that connects to three bedrooms, a bathroom, an office, and a master suite

All bedrooms have access to a common balcony along the right side of the floor plan, facing east, allowing residents to enjoy the morning sunlight

CLARA GAZEN LIBRARY

Studio Isaura Lara - professional São Sepé, RS 2023

Renovation of the Public Library of the City of São Sepé. Bringing this project to life was a dream come true for me, as this library is where I discovered my passion for books and the limitless learning opportunities they provide.

The concept for this project was to create a space that reignites the community's interest in visiting the library. We aimed to transform it into a place where new ideas can be exchanged and generated. Special attention was given to attracting children to the world of literature especially in an age dominated by technology and speed We wanted to ensure that visiting the library became synonymous with exploring a world away from screens and closer to imagination

We refurbished the existing shelves by painting them and encasing them in an MDF frame with LED lighting to highlight the books Additionally, we created glass modules to display historical artifacts from the city's culture The existing tables were renovated by repainting and restoring the wood, then adding new glass tops The shelf layout was redesigned to be open to visitors. This change allowed us to create a meeting room for residents, a space for on-site computer, and areas with tables and chairs for research. We also included a cozy reading nook with comfortable armchairs for relaxation and contemplation.

For children, we dedicated a special section filled with children's books and space for activities developed by teachers. The furniture was designed to create inviting reading corners, making it easier for young ones to develop comfortable reading habits.
