ABASTO MULTI-MEDIA LIBRARY.

The Provincial Multi-Media Library of Cordoba is located in a post-industrial abandoned land on the periphery of Cordobas city center, Argentina, next to the Suquia river. Under the urgent need for a public space that allows the recovery of the river, reduces insecurity, allows social interaction, and connects the neighborhood with the city, a building is proposed. A large perforated raised volume supported by a structural system of a “pratt” truss, generates a large building for community meetings, learning, and entertainment. At the street level, a covered plaza hosts spontaneous social activities, and inside a central ramp distributes the user through the different educational, recreational, and cultural levels.

Pratt truss made up of three metal beams I 600mm, welded and bolted.

Ventilated facade, composed of double laminated glass, 70cm air chamber, welded to Pratt beam by means of metal tubes.

Galvanized steel rain drain gutter.

Steel deck slab + floating flat rooftop.

Grid-type metallic skinwall ceiling.

THESIS PROJECT - ALTA CORDOBA SPORTS CENTER.

The Alta Cordoba Sports Center is composed of two identical volumes, arranged to articulate the scale of a complex urban proposal with a multiple-use program. Volume one serves as a office building, while volume two serves exclusively as a high performing sports center. The green rooftops of the buildings are connected in height with the walkway platform which allows the normal functioning of a public transport tram line. Under the roofs, a series of structural beams allow the development of large open covered spaces, a continuation of the ground-level public space, projected towards the interior of the building and connecting the sports park with Av. Juan B. Justo.

A level drop of -2.80m allows the appearance of different interaction levels, thus generating a multiplicity of horizontal planes in visual and programmatic coexistence while allowing the sports program to gain the necessary height and the spectator stands.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING - BRUNNSHÖG.

A multi-family residential building was requested to be designed in the district of Brunnshög in Lund, Sweden following the parameters of energy efficiency, moisture safety, and passive conditioning to meet the Swedish building codes requirements (i.e. Primary Energy Use ≤ 75 kWh/m²). The base requirements included a heated floor area of 900 m² and an average window-to-wall ratio of 30%, aiming to ensure basic thermal comfort properties without active cooling, not exceeding 26°C of room temperature more than 10% of the time in summer (April to September), and an overall net zero energy consumption from the grid. After finding the best-performing shape, a correct consideration of a low-embodied Co2 materiality was crucial. Composed mostly of CLT systems and hemp insulation boards, which were assessed for thermal bridges in Heat2 and moisture safety in WUFI. Passive design strategies like horizontal and vertical shadings and special performing windows were analyzed to reach the desired thermal comfort. The construction aims to meet the Miljö Byggnad sustainable building certification and single parameters of other certifications such as FEBY or Passive House.

THERMAL COMFORT STRATEGIES

Base Case initial geometry simulations in Climate Studio showed excessive overheating, overpassing the FEBY 12 standard. Being the 2nd and 5th floor the particular cases to study in depth.

Flat 1 on the second floor exceeded 26°C for 90.18% of the time between April and September, highlighting the need for improvements. (see hourly carpet plot of the operative room temperature per improvements).

A two-meter-deep balcony reduced overheating to 59.73h-% in Flat 1 and 44.90h-% in Flat 2c by blocking the summer sun while allowing winter solar gains.

An optimized window assembly, upgrading them to better performing panes with lower U-value and g-value, cuting overheating to 35.58h-% in Flat 1 and 13.30h-% in Flat 2c with a minimal heating demand impact.

Adding Mechanical Night Purge during summer nights, helped further reducing overheating to 24.58h-% in Flat 1 and 6.97h-% in Flat 2c.

Lastly, Incorporating Natural Ventilation when indoor temperature was higher than 26°C, lowered overheating to 2.80h-% in Flat 1 and 1.23h-% in Flat 2c, meeting the FEBY standard by having overheating under 10%.
