Famously, Peter Weiss began his epic novel The Aesthetics of Resistance with a scene in which three young men stand in front of the frieze of the Pergamon Altar in 1937 Berlin. A mere heartbeat before Germany’s darkest hour, they contemplate the “gigantic wrestling” contest between the Giants and the Olympian gods. A peripatetic conversation takes the readers along two pathways: one depicts the violent defeat of the Giants as a kind of allegory of class struggle and repression, while the other carries the conversation to the actual earthly city of Pergamon, near present-day Izmir, where the altar was originally produced and installed.

Rather than uniquely concentrate on the representation of the battle depicted by the frieze, the friends try to reconstruct the necessities of its material production – the practices, skills, and labor relations that went into its making – focusing on the exploitation and suffering of the slaves that produced it some two thousand years ago. This double reading – material and representational – describes a condition by which, according to contemporary Marxist literary scholar Frederic Jameson, “we are ourselves called upon to retraverse [this “space time”] by way of reading.”2 The slow reading of the frieze – as a representation of class struggle and as a material product of class and labor relations – invoked for Weiss the necessity for a politics of resistance. Indeed, towards the end of the scene, the narrator will decide to join the doomed International Brigade in the fight against Franco’s army in Spain. The novel thus performs what Weiss called an “aesthetic pedagogy”: one in which art, architecture, history, and rough matter become entangled in the production of revolutionary subjectivity through economicpolitical analysis.

ARQUITECTURA DOCUMENTAL: LAS HISTORIOGRAFÍAS DIGITALES DEL MODERNISMO1

Peter Weiss comenzó su épica novela Una estética de la resistencia con una famosa escena en la que tres jóvenes se paran frente al friso del Altar de Pérgamo en el Berlín de 1937. Casi a punto de entrar en la hora más oscura de Alemania, contemplaron a los gigantes y a los dioses olímpicos competir en una ‘lucha de gigantes’. Una conversación peripatética lleva a los lectores por dos caminos: uno describe la violenta derrota de los gigantes como una especie de alegoría de la lucha de clases y la represión, mientras el otro lleva la conversación a la ciudad real de Pérgamo, cerca de la actual Esmirna, donde el altar fue originalmente producido e instalado.

En lugar de concentrarse únicamente en la representación que el friso hacía de la batalla, los amigos intentan reconstruir lo que requirió su producción material – en las prácticas, habilidades y relaciones laborales que participaron en su creación – centrándose en la explotación y el sufrimiento de los esclavos que lo construyeron hace unos dos mil años.

Esta doble lectura, material y representativa, describe una condición por la cual, según el crítico literario marxista Fredric Jameson, “nosotros mismos estamos llamados a volver a atravesar [este ‘espacio-tiempo’] por medio de la lectura”2. Una lectura detenida del friso, como representación de la lucha de clases y como producto material de relaciones laborales y de clase, invocaba para Weiss la necesidad de una política de resistencia. De hecho, hacia el final de la escena, el narrador decidirá unirse a la Brigada Internacional – condenada al fracaso – para luchar contra el ejército de Franco en España. Así, la novela desarrolla lo que Weiss llamó una ‘pedagogía estética’: donde el arte, la arquitectura, la historia y la materia en bruto se cruzan en la producción de subjetividad revolucionaria a través de un análisis económico-político.

Few remember these days that the Human Rights Watch, an organization that reports on human rights violations and abusive governments across the world, started as a private American ngo in 1978 under the name of Helsinki Watch. The organization tasked itself with observing the former Soviet bloc countries’ compliance with the Helsinki Accords of 1975 which sought to guarantee individual freedom. This group, along with many others, reported on and supported Eastern European dissidents.

On the Eastern side of the Iron Curtain, the Moscow Helsinki Group also formed, as well as Charter 77 in Czechoslovakia, and, since 1979, the Helsinki Watch Group in Poland – amongst others. The specter of the dissident haunted the last decade of the Communist bloc and contributed to its meltdown.

While the Western human rights activists could use the media for “naming and shaming,” Soviet bloc dissidents had to work largely underground with painstakingly prepared samizdat publications, declarations, exhibitions, performance, gatherings, open letters and communiqués under the omnipresent risk of state persecution, physical violence, imprisonment, forced exile, social discrimination and abuse.

To be a little diagrammatic, we could thus say that on the one side of the wall was the Western activist, while on the other was the Eastern dissident. The former is the prominent model for modes of political engagements in the world, the latter – now seemingly extinct – is a mode of retreat from it.

The main reason contributing to the disappearance of “dissidentism” is obviously the collapse of the Soviet bloc states that gave it target 74 |

DISIDENCIA A TRAVÉS DE LA ARQUITECTURA

En estos días, pocos recuerdan que Human Rights Watch, una organización que reporta violaciones de derechos humanos y gobiernos abusivos en todo el mundo, se inició en 1978 como una ong privada estadounidense con el nombre de Helsinki Watch. Dicha organización se encargaba de observar que los países del antiguo bloque soviético dieran cumplimiento a la Declaración de Helsinki de 1975 que buscaba garantizar la libertad individual. Junto a muchos otros, este grupo informó y apoyó a los disidentes de Europa del Este. En el lado este de la Cortina de Hierro también se formó el Grupo de Helsinki de Moscú, así como el Charter 77 en Checoslovaquia y, desde 1979, el Grupo de Observación de Helsinki en Polonia, entre otros. El espectro de la disidencia acechó la última década del bloque comunista y contribuyó a su colapso.

Mientras los activistas occidentales por los derechos humanos podían utilizar los medios de comunicación para ‘denunciar y avergonzar’, los disidentes del bloque soviético debieron trabajar, en gran parte, de forma clandestina: con publicaciones samizdat [autoedición clandestina] cuidadosamente preparadas, declaraciones, exposiciones, performances, reuniones, cartas abiertas y comunicados, bajo el riesgo omnipresente de persecución estatal, violencia física, encarcelamiento, exilio forzado, discriminación social y abusos. Siendo un poco esquemáticos, podríamos decir que de un lado del muro estaba el ‘activista’ occidental y, del otro, estaba el ‘disidente’ oriental. El primero es el principal modelo de participación política en el mundo; el segundo – ahora aparentemente extinto – es una forma de apartarse de él.

La principal razón que contribuyó a la desaparición del ‘disidentismo’ es, obviamente, el colapso de los estados del bloque soviético que Ediciones ARQ | Escuela de Arquitectura, UC Chile | 2020
