Community Comes to Carols

Citizens of the Year Australia Day awards were presented by the Mayor and included our very own Lesley Ould.

The Mayor said joint winners of the Citizen of the Year Award, George Said and Lesley Ould, had spent most of their lives volunteering and helping out in the community and it was impossible to choose between the two.

“It is a great pleasure to also recognise the lifetime work of Lesley Ould,” said Cr Wilson.

“She is one of Laverton's unsung heroes. She has rarely missed a tree planting event in Laverton and has attended every Clean Up Australia Day. She raises funds for the scouts and distributes the Around Laverton newspapers to the local neighbourhood.

“Her enthusiasm, energy and sheer work ethic should be an inspiration to us all.

“Lesley is a passionate advocate for Laverton, and you would most likely find her on any committee created to support Laverton's renewal. She is committed to supporting young people and raising the profile of the suburb, making it an even better place to live.

“She is an inspirational local and a fitting addition to the list of people who have previously been awarded Hobsons Bay's Citizen of the Year,” said Cr Wilson.

The 2014 Young Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Gabrielle Duke. Gabrielle attends Mount St Joseph Girl's College and has already received several awards for her leadership and dedication to making a difference in our community

The Laverton Community Carols by Candlelight were run by the Laverton Community Association and Hosted by the Laverton P‐12 on Sunday the 8th Dec. The Amphitheater was filled with locals as they enjoyed the entertainment. The event was sponsored by Bendigo Bank and HBCC. During the performances we were all asked to go outside to see Father Christmas arrive in a Fire Truck. He was there to give out presents to the waiting children.

Around and About with Our Roving Reporter Val Welcome back all our readers. Hope you all had a good holiday break over Christmas and the New Year. Once again several of our volunteer walkers had to give their rounds away. We thank those walkers very much for their contribution, your help has been appreciated but we are desperately looking for new folk to take over. Lots of different happening have taken place since the last “Roving Report” Cr. Sandra Wilson was elected Mayor of Hobsons Bay and Cr. Colleen Gates deputy Mayor. Cr. Colleen Gates and Cr. Luba Grigorovitch were our council reps but Luba has resigned to take over the

position of Secretary of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union. Cr Colleen Gates is still our council rep along with Carl Marsich who has replaced Luba.

A word from Jill Hennessy MP VICTORIAN LABOR TO DELIVER HOMESAFE: 24-HOUR WEEKEND PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR MELBOURNE'S WEST A Victorian Labor Government will deliver 24-hour public transport across Melbourne with trains, trams and buses running all weekend, every weekend.

Member for Altona District and Shadow Minister for Public Transport Jill Hennessy said that the announcement by the Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Andrews, that Homesafe Trains will be running on Werribee Line and stopping a t S e a h o l m e , A l t o n a , We s t o n a , Laverton, Aircraft, Williams Landing and Hoppers Crossing would be welcomed by local residents.

“Under Labor, residents in Seaholme, Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Seabrook, Williams Landing, Truganina and Point Cook will have transport options that have never before been available to them,” Ms Hennessy said.

“The new Homesafe Trains will mean workers in Melbourne's west who work

cheaper for residents living in Seaholme, Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Seabrook, Williams Landing, Truganina and Point Cook. That's good for our economy, workers and our nightlife.”

This will be a $50 million, 12 month trial of all night Friday and Saturday public transport and will be up and running by New Year's Eve 2015. Following the trial, Victorian Labor will review demand and structure the system accordingly. If passengers vote with their feet, 24-hour weekend public transport will be continued and expanded where necessary.

A dedicated Homesafe mobile app will ensure that Victorians always know when their next Homesafe service will be.

Protective Service Officers will continue to staff train stations until the first of the morning services resume.

TIME TO PULL TOGETHER

The recent announcement that Toyota will be ceasing its Australian manufacturing operations by 2017 is devastating news for many in Laverton. Unlike natural disasters such as floods or fires, its impact will unfold in a less dramatic fashion, but it will still be a huge blow to our community.

As I said in my speech in Parliament on 13 February, this is a blow not just to the workers at Toyota but one that will extend further, deep into the families and communities of our electorate and into Melbourne's West as a whole.

As we know, when Toyota goes, so will many of the component factories, the design firms, the maintenance companies, the caterers, the food vans, the cleaners, the uniform suppliers - the list goes on.

Many in our community either work in these areas or know someone who does. Thousands of people will be out of a job, and many more will feel the financial hit as a consequence of this news.

In periods of distress and adversity, Australians pull together and help each other out. It's a part of our national character, and if there's one thing I know about the people of our community, it's that we are a tough people, we never give up and we never give in.

This is a time for the people of Lalor to show our true colours, to pull together, to look out for each other and to lend a hand. This is a time to make sure your neighbour is OK, to put your ear to the ground and let your friends know of anything that may ease the burden. Even helping out in small ways is often very much appreciated.

Well the New Year started very well. But since then, one of our popular members Bob Nicoll has passed away, our thoughts are with his wife Maree. After the bad the Good News is that we have a driver for mini trips in the club bus. The first trip is to Frankston to the Food Star restaurant ‐ all you can eat. The next one is to Blackwood Mineral Springs for morning tea. This is followed by a two course meal, at the hotel in Blackwood. We will be leaving 8.30 am and should be home by five pm. Members must have six visits to the club before the Blackwood trip as the club is paying $20 for each eligible member. Since we have only been back in our club room at the Hub, Railway Avenue for two months, there is not much more news to give you, so best wishes for the New Year to all.

I cannot believe it is already March and summer is almost over. Hot Cross Buns and chocolate eggs have been in the supermarkets for some time now and it is possibly too late to be wishing everyone a Happy New Year!!

I wanted to take the opportunity to update readers on an Cr Colleen Gates representing issue close to my heart – car parking at the Laverton Train Wetlands Ward in Hobsons Bay Station. Much has changed since 2000 and many local City Council. residents would still have memories of the old train station and cross‐ramp. I must say the new train station (albeit with its own challenges) has played a significant role in modernising the urban landscape in Laverton. Along with the station upgrade, came the car parking, then more car parking and then came the cars. . . . . lots of cars, to a point where it was considered by some, to be out of control. The former Epsom Street primary school site gradually filled up with cars, becoming a public nuisance and creating new issues with antisocial behaviour. Cars also park along the rail reserve, turning this area into a mudpit and generating significant traffic hazards during morning and evening peak.

Council installed parking restrictions in nearby residential streets which provided significant relief for those who had struggled to even exit their own driveways on a daily basis, but more work has been needed. In late February, Council commenced a parking permit trial in Railway Avenue.

Approximately 45 car spaces located between Grace Street and the Princes Freeway overpass have been designated for permit parking only. Residents of Laverton, Seabrook and Altona Meadows will need to apply for a parking permit sticker to enable free parking in this permit zone without incurring an infringement notice. Applications can be made at the Council offices in Civic Parade or online using the permit management system under the Fees and Forms section on the Council website.

More recent developments have included the installation of bollards on the northern side of the rail line between Bladin St and Goble St. Council has written to the Dept. of Education and Early Childhood Development, successfully requesting that the Epsom Street site be secured so that informal parking on this land will no longer be an option for commuters.

I anticipate that these recent developments will further restore the amenity of the area and improve safety for those who visit or live in the area. Following a review of the trial, further considerations will be made.

Family fun in Altona on Australia Day

Hobsons Bay receives boost to tackle litter hotspots Hobsons Bay beaches and local streets are set to receive a clean-up from Victorian Coalition Government's $100,000 Litter Hotspots funding initiative.

Member for Western Metropolitan Region, Andrew Elsbury, said the Litter Hotspots project in Hobsons Bay with $5000 will help prevent local litter and keep the area beautiful.

“With this funding Hobsons Bay City Council will receive a helping hand to help clean up our favourite beaches and maintain the amenity for all beachgoers,” Mr Elsbury said.

The Cigarette Litter Reduction project will be delivered by Hobsons Bay City Council, focusing on removing cigarette butts in our local streets and on our beaches that are then washed into Bay. Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said the $100,000 in Coalition Government funding will support 10 local councils and community groups deliver projects that will prevent litter and clean-up areas along the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay catchment.

“The Cleaner Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay Litter Hotspots Project is one of several strategies in place as part of the Coalition Government's A Plan of Action which received more than $7 million in last year's state budget.

Altona Community Bank® Manager, John Dawson, said “We were so pleased to be part of this magnificent day. It was really a great demonstration of how wonderful the Altona spirit is. The Altona Village Traders Association did a great job.”

Altona's Secret Treasure An article by Jack Hallowell from the Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society.

Surrounded by the high metal fence opposite the Kooringal Golf Club in Queen Street these 16 hectares have lain dormant for many years undisturbed by the development surrounding it. As a result of this the Explosive Reserve is one of Melbourne's last unique and beautiful coastal spaces of archaeological, geological, geomorphological, fauna, floral and cultural significance with direct frontage to Port Phillip Bay. The Fight to Save Truganina Reserve In 1995 the Department of Treasury and Finance declared the former explosives reserve as surplus land and alternative uses for the land was sought. Local residents formed the Save Explosives Reserve Group and with the assistance of the Hobsons Bay City Council worked to protect the site, and maintain it as a significant piece of open part land.

With the development of the Victorian Coastal Strategy and then a Strategic Plan to create a continuous parkland along the Williamstown – Altona coast in 1997, pressure to save the site began to m o u n t . I n S e p t e m b e r 1 9 9 9 t h e Department of Natural Resources and E nv i ro n m e n t rev i e we d t h e 1 9 9 7 Assessment and Evaluation Report (that

had suggested disposal of the site) against the Victorian Coastal Strategy and determined that the land was not surplus a n d w o u l d b e r e t a i n e d i n c r o w n ownership. In June 2000 the State Government appointed the City of Hobsons Bay as the committee of management to administer the former explosives reserve for use as a recreational park. Many thanks are due to the local residents who undertook this fight, and helped to achieve this result.

The detailed mater plan for the Explosive Reserve has now been agreed t o b y t h e S t a t e D e p a r t m e n t o f Environment and Primary Industry.

Council and the Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society (TERPS) now have a clear direction forward.

LAVERTON PARK TENNIS CLUB MERTON STREET The team of coaches and committee warmly welcome back readers and wish all a very happy and healthy 2014. Whilst all went quiet over the Christmas/New Year period to enjoy festivities and holidays, a couple of members from our hard working committee ensured daily/weekly inspections of our facility and it is with much thanks to them that the club continues to be enjoyed by its members and community. By Dr. R. Cox Never give a pet human medication without getting veterinary advice first.

Dogs are not small humans, and cats are not small dogs, so it should never be assumed that what is normal or safe in one, is equally so in another species.

However there are some biological basics, that carry across species that mean that we can all suffer from the same diseases.

For example, diabetes is a condition where the body does not produce insulin, which is needed to get sugar into cells. Without insulin, no sugar can get into the, cell, but flows in the bloodstream in high levels.

The patient is essentially starving, with a really high blood sugar. The patient becomes progressively thinner. The kidneys have to wash out a lot of water with the excess sugar. The classic appearance of a patient in early diabetes is of a reasonably happy animal, which is excessively hungry and thirsty, but losing weight.

(Of course this deteriorates if they are not treated) Although the principles of the disease a n d t h e t r e a t m e n t a r e s i m i l a r, sometimes the underlying factors are different. Diabetes in dogs is more like type 1 or juvenile diabetes in humans.

They will always need insulin, and once the right dose is found, this does not alter much, unless something else changes.

Cats are more like type 2 or adult onset diabetes.

Burmese cats are overrepresented, so there are hereditary factors, possibly also in domestic cats, but we have pedigrees for very few of them! They will need insulin to start with, but some will recover enough pancreatic function to live normally without insulin, if treated early.

There is a specific insulin made for dogs and cats, however we use it mostly just for dogs. There is a type of long acting human insulin that works very well in cats, so we use this in preference. Occasionally we will use human insulin in dogs too.

There are exceptions to this, so never give a pet human medication without getting veterinary advice first.

Epilepsy is treated with similar drugs in dogs and cats to people. However there are a few exceptions - some drugs are excreted too quickly by dogs to be effective in seizure control.

Cats have less enzymes to detoxify drugs, so there are several drugs that they can only tolerate in small amounts, or not at all.

Panadol would be the best known example of this.

Neurofen, which is safe enough to be stocked in supermarkets for human use, is much more toxic in dogs.
