Laverton Old School Hosts “Wicked Widows” Hobsons Bay City Council is proud to present 'Wicked Widows' at the Laverton Old School on Thursday, 10th July at 2.00pm. “Wicked Widows” is about three widows of varying ages who meet for a lunch that holds a few surprises. The Old Laverton School will be transformed ‘café style’ and a light afternoon tea will be served prior to the performance.

LAVERTON SWIMMING CLUB 2008 CHAMPIONS The Laverton Swimming Club held their Presentation Night on Sunday 1st June 2008. Jamie Grusling and Sarah Chadwick came out triumphant after not only winning the Series 2 Aggregate Aw a r d i n t h e i r particular age groups but also winning the 2007 / 2008 club championship. Both swimmers have also broken Club Records over the past year.

Laverton Swimming Club operates out of the Laverton Swim & Fitness Centre in Jennings Street, Laverton on Monday, We d n e s d a y s a n d Fridays with Club time trials being conducted on Sunday mornings.

The Laverton Community Bus has arrived!

After successful funding by the Department of Planning and Community Development along with the Hobsons Bay City Council and the Laverton Community Renewal Project, the long awaited Community Bus is here and ready to get the Laverton Community moving.

The bus has a step that can be lowered for easy access. It can carry 12 people including the driver so a normal licence is O.K. to use. There is a small storage facility in the back.

Around and About With Our Roving Reporter Firstly we are still looking for someone willing to do the layout of the paper. I had no experience when I started so I am willing to teach anyone who is interested. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle. You need to put in the ads & photos and fit the stories around them. If you can't catch us on 9369 1304 try 0439 714 951 and I will arrange a time to suit you to have a look at what is required. Also we had no response to our request for someone to become distribution manager. It is your community newspaper so please someone come forward to help. Please don’t let the paper die! There are too many wonderful volunteers involved to let something unique disappear.

Secondly I need to apologise to Michelle from Borg’s Cakes in Harrington Square. She has advertised in our paper for many years and I left her ad our last month. Sorry Michelle. We found if you need an unusual cake, as my son did for his wedding, or any beautifully designed cake, Borg's is the place to go.

Everyone else said it couldn't be done but she did it and it tasted fantastic.

Laverton been granted more money to upgrade our entrances/gateways (Newlands, High & Aviation) so we should look fantastic in the not so9 distant future.

Finally Marje Bilston has got her wish and has moved back to Sorrento where she grew up.

Hope all goes well for her.

As you can see by the front page we now have a Community Bus but I can't give you any details as the final 'sorting out' as to when it will be available have not been finalized. Will let you know more next month.

I was asked the other day if the Laverton Community Garden was run by the Council.

have been very supportive but the local residents run it and are responsible for it. It is our garden and anyone is welcome to join in. We meet every 2nd Sat and (weather permitting) have a BBQ lunch after our 'dig around'. Come and join us and enjoy the outdoors.

Also I was asked why So'n'Sos had closed down. Well they haven't. They closed the restaurant part but you can still get a sit down meal if you wish in the shop but they are definitely open for business. Twice in the last week we have had food from there. I don't know if they have a new chef or what, but I can recommend the food and the service. We are lucky, for such a small shopping strip to have such a variety of food shops available for us to choose from. Why not try one of them soon?

The rain certainly has changed the look of Laverton and probably the whole state. It was not only the farmers who were hit by the drought but city people as well. Those in the gardening and mowing section and nurseries etc. did it tough as well. Let’s hope the rain continues and the grass grows for them and people start to think about plants for their gardens again. I suppose you know the drought caused farmers to reduce their stock but did you stop to think that this meant less milk produced, which in turn, meant less or dearer produce on the supermarket shelf for butter and cream.

Now that the rain has come the farmers will need to restock and that will mean less meat available so the price may increase.

Julia Gillard MP It’s Tax Help time again Each year since 2000 my office has assisted with the Tax Help program, which enables low income earners to receive free confidential help in completing their tax returns – and this year is no exception.

This is an excellent service for local residents on low incomes. I encourage those eligible, to make an appointment in the coming weeks.

The program will operate from my electorate office at Shop 2, 36 Synnot Street Werribee every Thursday from July 17th through to October.

Community volunteers give up their time each year to come together and form the Tax Help network. These volunteers are not Tax Office staff, but they receive training and support from the Tax Office.

The Tax Help program is often used by people on low incomes including seniors and students. However the program is not restricted to the above, it is open to any member of the community on a low income.

The taxable income levels to be eligible for Tax Help are listed below:

A single person

$35,000 or less per annum.

Married or de facto

$35,000 or less plus $2,500 for each child.

A single parent $35,000 or less plus $2,500 for each child.

Tax Help volunteers are restricted from assisting clients with business tax returns, partnership and trust matters, capital gains tax (CGT) and rental property.

Another use of the computer was demonstrated when club member Will using Roxio 7.5 demonstrated how to copy and burn, using an old 78rpm record, and including all other types of records and audio tapes, to disk. With some questions and answers time this tutorial took up most of the night. It was inspiring to see and hear one of our own club members 'stand and deliver' a session on a topic, which obviously, gives him much pleasure to pursue.

A WORD FROM LYNNE KOSKY $100,000 PROVIDES A GATEWAY TO LAVERTON'S COMMUNITY PRIDE Laverton's million dollar facelift has received a further $100,000 from the Bru mb y Go ve rn me n t's C o mmu n i ty Renewal program announced today by Lynne Kosky MP, Member for Altona.

Ms Kosky said the funding would help beautify the entrances and exits to and from the Princes Freeway and improve the streetscape and parking at Aviation Road's shopping precinct.

Laverton is one of eight growing communities across Victoria taking part in the Brumby Government's Community Renewal program, which gives local residents the opportunity to decide how they want their neighbourhood to change and grow.

“Locals involved in Laverton Community Renewal identified the need to revitalise the suburb's gateways as a key priority,” Ms Kosky said.

“Construction work and landscaping at the Aviation Road, High Street and Newland Street gateways will create more attractive entrances to the suburb and help make locals feel even prouder of their community.

“The shopping centre on Aviation Road will also receive a facelift and improved parking areas, making it safer and more accessible,” she said.

Hobsons Bay City Council will provide up to $710,000 to the project, and VicRoads will contribute $255,000 towards works at the Newland Street and High Street gateways.

The Department of Sustainability and the Environment has provided $73,000 for the

Community Renewal also contributed to the Bladin Street streetscaping project which will enhance the built environment in Laverton.

Ms Kosky said Community Renewal was giving local residents the opportunity to decide how they want Laverton to change and grow, putting the community at the centre of planning for its future.

“This project shows what can be achieved when local residents, businesses and community organisations work with government agencies to respond to the unique needs of the community – which is what Community Renewal is all about,” Ms Kosky said.

“It's great to see that the ideas coming out of community planning are leading to tangible benefits for community members.”

Paul’s endeavours started approximately 2½ years ago. It was his wish to reduce the amount of pollutant wastes on our environment. It seemed to him that all of human endeavours (so to speak) to reduce such wastes were not quite enough. Expectations and dreams don't change habit. He felt that what was needed is a means/ a method or maybe a tool. The tool came into fruition. It was a tool that didn't exactly change the method in which we achieve results. A tool that in itself assists in achieving the result and dramatically reduces the volume of pollutants. This waste pollutant is mineral turpentine. We may not quite realize how harmful paint residue and mineral turpentine waste actually is to our environment. A short story will help you realise.

Council Column Welcome to the July edition of Around Laverton.

The Council's 2008/2009 budget provides funding for a number of initiatives that will directly benefit the Laverton community.

Works to relocate the powerlines in Aviation Road underground have been given the green light and allocated $200,000 in the budget.

The funding also includes streetscape works for Laverton's most popular thoroughfare.

Down the road, the Crown Street Community Hub has also been allocated $200,000. The community consultation period resulted in 14 submissions being received by the Council.

The submissions have been considered and a revised plan is currently being developed.

As a result of a workshop held in March, the Laverton Train Station Taskforce has been established to transform the station into a vibrant community hub.

The taskforce has a strong representation of 12 local residents, representatives from the Council, the state government, VicTrack and Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria.

An action plan is currently being developed which will list short, medium and long term priorities for the station.

The taskforce will be receiving regular updates about works that have been allocated funding in the state budget, including an additional platform at the station, a kilometre of new railway track and a new footbridge at the Laverton station.

In other news, the Old Laverton School is hosting a theatre performance of 'Wicked Widows' on Thursday, 10th July at 2.00pm.

Wicked Widows' is a comedy about three widows who meet for a lunch that holds a few surprises.

ROTARY’S 35th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

ROTARY’S 35TH BIRTHDAY On 18th June 1973 the Rotary Club of Laverton (now Laverton/Point Cook) was formed and chartered by Rotary International. On the 13th October the official recognition of the Club was held at the Laverton Memorial Hall (since demolished and replaced by the Laverton Complex) with a celebration of some 200 Rotarians, guests and partners. Dignitaries representing the District and Presidents representing other Rotary Clubs welcomed the newest Club to the district. As a community service club the first big project undertaken was in 1974, when a house that had to be moved from site was donated to the Club. This was the start of the Community Centre house in Crown Street. With a grant and donations, a block of land was bought, the house sited and with a new brick fasçia the keys were handed over by the Club President Peter “Tiny” Jackson; with further financial support, the Centre was up and running and still is.

Over those 35 years the Club has contributed to community in many ways, too numerous to mention here; suffice to say many residents have benefited and recognition given to those residents who have given of themselves when presented with the Rotary “Citizen of the Year” awards.

By now you would be aware our Stage 2- $8.4 million project didn’t get funded in the State Budget. Regardless of Stage 2 being delayed we will continue to develop our school to be the best school possible. This is a setback but we will continue to move forward and develop our new school culture. We have to be optimistic and work with what we have got using our existing resources to the best of our ability to improve student learning outcomes.

Our focus will be on expanding many of our current wonderful programs in action across the 3 campuses and to develop new and exciting programs to improve student learning outcomes.

Grade 4 building with the latest state-of-the art computer/ICT facilities. Stage 1 was to be finished by mid October 2008, it now seems closer to the end of November. The slab will be completed during the term holidays.

July is the month that we are waiting for to prepare for spring, despite the fact that the temperature is a lot colder plus a lot of cold winds.

July is a good month to work in your gardens and take notice of your soil.

Hydrangeas indicate lime content in the soil.

Very pink means high in lime, another sign is yellow leaves means alkaline soil and salt content.

Apply soluble fertilizer to blooming winter annuals such as cineraria, poppies, primrose, polyanthus and stocks. Prune roses until the end of the month and give them a spray with fungicide to help control black spot.

Prune your shrubs and trees and give them a feed.

Start preparing your vegetable gardens now.

Dig in well rotted animal manure, composted organic material and blood and bone.

The more time you spend getting your soil ready the better your vegetables will be.

Now is the time to plant delphiniums, dianthus, foxgloves, snapdragons pansies, primula, stocks and sweetpeas .

Now is also the time to plant bulb; arum lilies, cliveas, daffodils, freesias, and snowdrops.

Get out and enjoy your garden, rug up and keep warm.

We are a traditional Scottish Dancing Club that teaches Scottish, Irish, swords, sailors hornpipe.

LAVERTON SOFTBALL Hi everyone, Hope you are keeping warm and staying well this winter...

Over the long weekend last month the Victorian Masters Softball Championships were held at Presidents Park.

Hosted by Werribee Softball Association.

Many people were involved from the Associations clubs. Everyone worked together to host a successful tournament.

The weather wasn't too cold or wet compared to other years.

Our Laverton Men's team competed in B Division and finished 4th. Our Laverton women's team competed in E division and finished 5th. Both our Laverton teams played 6 games each, enjoyed the tournament and did well.

Great job to the players, coaches, managers, scorers and umpires. I hope there weren't too may aching bodies after the weekend.

Next edition I'll have the details of our annual Open day to be held at our club rooms in Laverton next month.

Each year, August is Pet Dental Health month. Each August, we offer Free Dental Health checks. Note: if further investigation is required before an anæsthetic, or for something we find elsewhere of your pet (depending on the time involved) then a fee would be charged. That’s only fair; but it’s a good place to start if you were concerned or unsure about the health of your pet’s mouth.

The mouth can reflect conditions elsewhere in the body – for example, the gums are the first place we look to find

symptoms of anæmia, jaundice, or circulation problems.

In cats, inappropriate inflammation of the gums can make us suspicious of the feline aids virus. Infections of the mouth can seed bacteria to the rest of the body, most notably the heart valves and the kidneys, if you are unlucky.

Animals can’t clean their teeth. In the wild, they would have to a lot of chewing on bones, fur and feathers in the process of getting their food. As for modern human- processed foods, we make life too easy for them, and set them up for dental disease. Eating canned food is like eating cake and never cleaning your teeth.

Animals don’t get tooth decay as we do, but periodontal disease, where the normal small gap between the gums and the teeth traps food particles, then bacteria. Infection eventually causes separation of the gums from the tooth, leaving a bigger pocket to trap more food and bacteria, and so it goes. This process is irreversible, and eventually the tooth comes out.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Teach your pet to chew things, as in big raw bones (nothing cooked, sharp or splinterable), chew toys, and chunks of tough chewy meat and if possible, chunky, chewy veggies. As far as mouth health goes, we recommend dry strongly over canned, but it’s not the sole answer.

Train your puppy/kitten to let you play with and examine its mouth. Reward it for doing so. You may not want or need to clean your pet’s teeth, but it is useful to know you can. Then you can at least know what is normal in your pet’s mouth, and monitor changes.

If your pet requires veterinary intervention, this will usually involve a general anæsthetic, for a full investigation, and any treatment required. We normally recommend an intravenous drip, as a dental can be timeconsuming. For older animals (8 to 12+) we recommend a pre-anæsthetic profile.

We clean and scale the teeth, removing hard stuff (tartar), remove any that are loose, or will be soon, then polish the teeth to make them as smooth as possible to prevent plaque (the soft stuff that turns into tartar) sticking to the tooth.
