Around and About With Our Roving Reporter This is the last paper for 2007 and we all need a break. We wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

We look forward to being back in your letterboxes in March 2008. Once again we thank our volunteer deliverers etc. without whom this paper would not exist.

On the 16th Nov a free concert/picture show/play was put on by the Torch project called 'The Con'. This short film made by interviewing some locals, was shown first (this is on DVD at our local library if you would like to check it out). It was very good and as part of the film Joe Inserra showed how he could skate, as the lights came on, up got Joe and skated around the stage. Everyone laughed & clapped. The play followed. They have an excellent cast and to make it special they included locals.

The Festival, on the 17th Nov. was a great success thanks to the good organisation by the Traders' Michael Boyd and the Community Centre. The Scarecrows, organised by the Laverton Community Garden, drew a lot of attention, the weather behaved and the people kept smiling. The patience of the mums & dads as they waited in line for Santa was appreciated, also the children were so polite thanking Santa and wishing him a Merry Christmas. They also admired his 'red bike' with one mum telling her child to ask Santa for one for his dad. Once again the free rides kept the kids going and exhausted the parents. Another difference this year was the sale of fresh fruit & vegetables (fresh from the market) at amazingly cheap prices. This stall was set up by IGA Supermarket. entertainment rolling along. This year a bus load of 35 people came to our festival from Wycheproof in appreciation for the support they have received from our area. I pinched this saying from the Wycheproof phone book “Our small businesses are like muscles use them or lose them”.

The next day, Sunday, started off with a bang.

The high winds sending off house alarms, tree branches dancing along the street and a little bit of rain.

As I key in this article I thought about my home computer that I use for this article. It has served me well as it has recorded our trips around Australia but like me it is old. Bought in 1993 it only has 12KB of memory, uses Windows version 3.1 and Microsoft Word version 6.0 from 1983/93 Maybe next year I might have to retire it & update.

LAVERTON SENIOR CITIZENS From all reports the members who attended the annual festive dinner at the Altona Bowling Club on the 20th November and they will know who they are had good meals, good company and a good night.

The past year has been very productive and informative with variations to the programmes with members showing more interest in the Multi Media presentations and good attendances at the weekend workshops.

Members are reminded to bring a plate of “something” for the Christmas breakup and last night for 2007, Thursday 6th. December commencing at 7.30pm at the Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre (upper level) located on the south side of Central Square Shopping Centre, corner Merton Street and Central Avenue, Altona Meadows.

In these situations, the court can still grant probate of the will. This is called letters of administration with the will annexed. A court order needs to be obtained before the deceased's estate is distributed.

Small estates Special rules apply where the estate is small, as defined in legislation. The Small Estates Office of the Probate Office of the Supreme Court can deal with these estates.

Contesting a will A will can be contested or challenged when :

? It is alleged the will was incorrectly executed or was tampered with. ? The will was executed under pressure from others or the will maker was incapable of making a will. ? Insufficient provision has been made in the will for a spouse, children or other persons the will maker has an obligation to provide for - formerly Testator's Family Maintenance applications (TFM's). ?The will has been incorrectly administered.

Contesting the validity or interpretation of a will can be costly and complex. Generally the courts cannot look behind the contents of a will where the words are clear and unambiguous.

TFM applications Where family members have not been adequately provided for under the terms of a will, application can be made under Part IV of the Administration and Probate Act for provision to be made out of the deceased's estate. ?Applications must be made within 6 months of the grant of probate or letters of administration.

Welcome to the final edition of Around Laverton for 2007.

I'd like to take this opportunity to reflect on a prosperous 2007 for the Laverton community.

In February the Council officially opened the $2.3 million Laverton Community Children's Centre with then Minister for Children Lisa Neville MP. The centre provides first class child care facilities for the Hobsons Bay community, especially those living in Laverton and its surrounding areas.

Offering 75 placements for long day care, a 26-place kindergarten, occasional care, a toy library, and family support services, the centre operates as a fully integrated children's services hub.

It was also a very fruitful year for the Laverton Community Renewal project with the Council's project officers relocating from the Civic Centre in Altona to Crown Street in Laverton.

These staff members are now based in the community they're working for which allows easy access for local residents and a direct avenue to liaise with the Laverton Action Group which is working closely with the Council during the Community Renewal project.

Arts and culture is also alive and well in Laverton in 2007 with the Torch Project bringing together aspiring actors, artists, musicians and writers to perform a community theatre production at the Laverton Festival in November.

The Mayor Leigh Hardinge officially opened the Laverton Traders Festival on Sat 17th of November. The group above were talking after the opening speeches.

Cr. Stuart McLean, along with 35 others, came all the way from Wycheproof to attend our festival. They are having their own on the 7th of Dec and were interested in seeing how ours was run. They also had an entry in the scarecrow competition and won one of the sections.

2008 promises to be an exciting year for Laverton as we consolidate the hard work we've done over the last couple of years and introduce some more exciting community renewal initiatives, capital works projects and finish off some of the programs already underway.

I'd like to wish you all a safe and happy festive season and I look forward to working with you to improve Laverton in the New Year.

THE STRENGTH TEST. 4WD Monthly tested each tyre using the plunger energy test. All tyres were inflated to 51 psi and a steel plunger was pushed at constant speed into the top of the tread block. The distance the plunger moved from its first contact with the tread until it punctured the tyre was recorded (this shows the flexibility of the tyre), as was the force required to puncture the tyre. Out of the 14 brands tested the Cooper was found to be the most puncture resistant.

“Hangover” is when some of you are sober enough to realise how drunk the rest of you are.

Push a drunk out of a first floor window and he will gather his bruised, relaxed body from the footpath and stagger off towards the nearest pub. Do the same to a man with a hangover and you are likely to end up on a charge of murder (or at the very least, G.B.H.).

As mentioned last month, it was a long time ago when man discovered that if he left certain fruit, or honey and water to stand in a warm atmosphere, there was a definite change in taste; and if consumed in quantity there were interesting after-effects, initially pleasant, later less agreeable. The first hangover occurred about three-and-a-half hours after this discovery.

The location of this event is not easy to pinpoint, but (again as mentioned last month) as the species of vine which grows wine grapes is a native of Persia, there is a school of thought that lays it squarely at the Persians' door; and as such, must come as a considerable blow to the Ayatollahs.

The next important discovery was that there were

Attitudes to hangovers are complicated by considerations of nationality, morality, politics and class - especially class. The working class victim gets very little sympathy on the №13 'bus to the factory gates, whereas the banker is shown understanding and envy by his colleagues; which is all the stranger because the manual worker will not work that much less well on the morning after, while the banker's creative output is likely to be nil!

The claim that good wine causes less severe hangovers than bad is one that contains an irritating amount of truth. Cheap wines of dubious origins are likely to contain more vicious congeners (“a minor chemical constituent (of) wine or spirits, responsible for some of its physiological effects” Shorter O.E.D.) than their more carefully produced competitors. Congeners produce hangovers and it is well to remember that brandy, whisky, port, sherry, vermouths, rums (especially dark rums) and red wine, particularly rich and heavy ones, contain a good many. This leaves gin,

drinking the same quantity and quality of booze as others.

Here are a few truths, and remember that they are only for those who want the best of both worlds, to drink and be of good cheer afterwards: 1. Drink causes hangovers, but less drink causes lesser hangovers. Drink slowly, dilute your drink and use small glasses such as the Japanese use for saki. If you go to Japan you cannot help noticing that all the same, the poor dears get terribly drunk on the miniscule glasses they use.

2. Sweet drinks act faster than dry ones, iced ones more quickly than those at room temperature, etc. To put it another way, they all get you in the end. Alcohol leaves the system at around a single measure of spirits, or half a pint of beer an hour, and the stomach cannot, even when bombarded with fruit juice, coffee, etc., speed up the process.

3. Drink dehydrates. Remember that most of the physical ills of a hangover are due, directly or indirectly, to dehydration. Drinking soft drinks (or “Adam's Ale”) in the intervals of hard ones does help.

4. “You can tell a man who boozes by the company he chooses”. Guilt plays a large part in hangover misery, and guilt is caused as much by vague recollections of what nearly happened than by actual deeds. When planning to drink too much, try to do so in the immediate vicinity of people whom you are unlikely to see again. This will cause a physical rather than a mental hangover, which is much easier to treat.

Something New EXERCISE CLASSES FOR FEMALES OF ALL AGES Ann, a resident of Laverton, is dusting off her ballet shoes and will be commencing Physical Culture classes at Laverton Community Centre from 9am Saturday, 2nd February 2008, but book now before you forget.

Ann is an ex-Edith Parsons' School of Physical Culture instructress with over 20 years teaching experience.

Physical Culture involves exercise put to modern music and is a sport that can be enjoyed by mothers, daughters and granddaughters. It is based on ballet and dance and aids physical fitness, flexibility, coordination and posture. It is widely known in New South Wales but the closest sport to it in Victoria would be callisthenics (although Physical Culture does not focus on gymnastic movements).

T h e H a r r i n g t o n S q u a r e Tr a d e r s Association is seeking a graphic logo and slogan to brand the Harrington Square Shopping Centre.

Kerrie who is on the management committee and runs 'lol coffee & games' at the square says the traders are keen to invite community members from the Western Suburbs to enter a competition to design 'the logo and slogan concepts' for the shopping centre .

The winning logo and slogan will be used on display at the shopping centre and in the squares marketing and publicity campaigns to promote business in the square. Our aim is to make sure that people know where the square is and what type of shopping it has to offer.

The competition will open in mid December 2007 and run into the first week of March 2008.

“THE HOMESTEAD BLUES FESTIVAL” to be held on the 10th February 2008, is expected to attract thousands of music lovers to the Point Cook Homestead grounds, the venue for this exciting concert with several Blues groups engaged to perform. There will be also children's activities, wine tasting and gourmet food available.

2nd LAVERTON CUB & SCOUTS Old Geelong Road Laverton

The Scouts of Laverton have been busy getting ready for 2008, the year of the Scout. In 2008 Scouts from 1st & 2nd Laverton will join Scouts across Australia in marking 100 years in the community.

Part of these celebrations will include a special float in the Bayside Festival parade on Sunday 9th March 2008 at the Bayside Festival. Scouts Australia plans to have an absailing wall, children’s games and free craft activities open to everyone.

The Cubs from both Laverton groups are preparing for the Cuboree event. This is a state activity, in the 2008 April school holidays, where thousands of Cub Scouts will come for four days of camping and activities.

The Cubs of 2nd Laverton have been busy fundraising for this event and many readers will know of the unfortunate theft that affected the group. We are pleased to say the Community spirit in Laverton has lead to lots of support and the Cubs are starting again, using the coming months as a chance to gain the funds needed to attend such an exciting event.

At 1st Laverton, four Cub Scouts recently got the highest award for their age group, a Gary Wolf Award. This award shows many hours of hard work and learning including day walks, learning about Australian history, camping and running games for other Cub Scouts at the group. It is a good achievement and these Cubs will be able to apply their new skills around the home and at school.

Scouting in Laverton is going strong as we mark the 100th year of our movement. Please join in on our celebrations. We will be at the Bayside Festival, be out and about at fetès and fairs and have lots of activities in public. If you see us around come and say hi – our leaders are the ones in the blue shirts!

We are looking for a few more adults to put on the blue shirts. Both groups in Laverton rely on a 100% volunteer team to keep our youth programs running. Last month the club hosted a pie night for all.

I have never seen so many pies.

We also held our annual Trivia night with around 50 members, family and friends all having a good time. Of course, the Fry’s won again. Well done to all. A huge thank you to Di and Stacey once again for running the evening.

On Friday 30th November, we hosted a movie night. Another great night of club socializing. Thanks to Noel for running that one.

By Dr. R. Cox. The baby boom continueth this year! Ann had a boy in January, Kate had a daughter in July, Lydia had a daughter in August, and some of you may remember Lynley, who had a son in October. For the rest of us, I'm afraid, it's business as usual. Matthew moved from semi-rural to suburban Lara.

When we refer to grass seeds being a problem, we are referring to those approximately 1 cm long things that look a bit like a wild oat, with a sharp pointy end and spikes radiating out and backwards so that they can burrow through skin quite efficiently, but only in one direction. They are a problem at this time of year, although less so now that this area is more built up.

Dogs with thick wavy coats, most particularly spaniels, are prone to getting them stuck in their fur, then they work their way slowly but inexorably through the skin.

The most common place we find them is in the paws, followed by the ears, but they can be found anywhere. They have been found in the liver of a dog and in the lungs of a cat.

In the paw, the most common place to find them is between the middle 2 toes, where there is a natural pocket that seems to trap them. If they have worked their way through, you will see a red, angry swollen lump above or between the toes, which may have a visible hole leaking pus. Your dog will have attracted your attention by licking at it constantly. If we're very lucky, the tip of the grass seed is still visible, and can be grabbed and pulled out. Occasionally they will trick you by having two seeds in there, so we always double check, if the patient will let us. If a grass seed is missed, it will slowly work its way up the paw, and appear as a swollen red area indicating an abscess.

Antibiotics may make this temporarily better, but it is primarily a reaction to something the body recognises as foreign, and will keep forming an abscess until you track down whatever is in there.

If the grass seed is in the ear, your dog will have very suddenly started shaking its head and may be quite distressed. If you look at the ear, it will probably look quite normal from the outside, as opposed to an ear infection, where it is usually red and smelly, but the only real way to tell is for us to look down there with an otoscope. If we are lucky, we can fish out the seed on the spot, but often we need to sedate them, particularly if it is deep into the skin, or close to the ear drum.

If you think your dog will need sedation, remember not to feed it for at least several hours before the appointment, if possible.

If your dog is prone to grass seeds, it is wise to have them clipped reasonably short all over through summer, or failing that, a grass seed clip, where the paws, (and the ears too, if they are very hairy ) are clipped short, so there is less chance of the grass seeds being caught, and they are easier to find. If you have taken your dog into grass seed territory, check between its toes afterwards, so find and remove them before they tunnel in.
