Meet the Artist • Carol Quinn Carol's strong affinity for art goes as far back as kindergarten, her parents and paternal grandfather always supported her efforts and her teachers always recognized and encouraged her . She first started painting in oils, as a child, using leftover paint from paint by number kits and creating her own compositions. Progressing from painting and drawing horses and sketches of people, she branched out into pen and ink and charcoal before settling on painting the California landscape in oils and gouache.

Moving to California was one of the biggest influences on her art. The beautiful, clear light and shadow patterns of the landscape, the dramatic vistas and glorious color, and the incredible atmosphere are an endless source of inspiration.

After visiting the town of Mendocino, with its New England feel and rugged coast, she added seascapes to her repertoire. Her paintings reflect her unique vision of the world with heightened color and glowing light, and a passion for translating what she sees into a scene the viewer feels they could step into. Carol states, “My art conveys a sense of peace and calm that I believe many people are searching for in these chaotic and uncertain times.” Many collectors have commented that they feel an emotional connection to her paintings. She is drawn to scenes of the local landscape such as the Gold Country, vineyards, the

I live and breathe art, painting almost every day.”

In May, my 1-year anniversary of ownership quietly came and went. It's been an incredible year full of growth, learning, doubt, frustrations and excitement.

A full annual rotation is now under my belt. I am so blessed that I fill my days meeting people in the community, learning about our county's history and working with local businesses and non-profits to increase their visibility. So thank you.

Thank you for reading, thank you for telling businesses you found them here and thank you for being a part of AHM. This issue was a delight to make! I am a huge fan of the outdoors, live music and events, and this issue has so much "Go and Be, outside..". Trains, stars, gardening, and fun. I love this issue's Women of History, it really resonates, and I always learn such amazing things from Ellen Osborn's articles. I hope you enjoy reading about some of our local business and nonprofits too, and I hope to see you out and about "Around Here" in El Dorado County.

Nature Matters

Each day, we share our connection with nature: relishing a glorious sunrise, enjoying a soothing sunset, listening to birdsong, seeing a plant’s vibrancy, sighting wild critters, sharing weather observations. We can be refreshed by sensing our natural world. Nature’s effects affect us, and vice versa.

Long summer days in El Dorado County allow for practically endless swimming opportunities found at lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers where one may slip, like River Otter or Mink, into cool silky, slow moving water. Azalea blossoms perfume the air. Leopard Lily’s bright orange flower petals with speckles of brown can be spotted streamside.

Many years ago, after a swim in the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River, miniature labyrinthine prisms all over the wet, sun-warmed rock caught my attention.

I have since been enjoying these magical apparitions, jewel-like beauties, in many settings, on a variety of surfaces. Sparkles seen on a suspended drop of dew or rain, shining like a star; I see them in my sink, in drops of tap water, even on floating dust motes, though not as dazzling. Look closely at that drop of water or twinkle of frost (possible at high altitude in the summer). Do you see them? They appear with rays of sunlight. Their outer edge looks similar to a gear with lots of tiny sprockets. Most often they are circular in form, with a maze of lines inside the circle.

A topper of my summer time fun is hiking in our magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountains and swimming in every body of water I get close to. Sometimes I can’t call it swimming. More like a mad dunk as the icy-cold water momentarily takes my breath away.

Memories of summer time nature matters are welcomed on this cold winter night as I write. Nature matters to me.

Clear balmy nights allow for viewing our celestial show of stars, planets, Moon’s phases, our Milky Way Galaxy. One can lie on duff scented with oak, pine and fungi, comfortably staring for hours as we revolve. Looking out onto still, high mountain lake water at midnight, admiring stars reflected up to us, is a special treat.

Keep your ears alert for calls of nocturnal animals: fox’s husky bark sounding from hillside, bobcat caterwauling, raccoon trilling, the full rhythmic call of a Great Horned Owl. Be careful - raccoon’s purring trill and Screech Owl’s call may sound similar. California Mice are delicate looking night creatures. Our paths crossed twice last summer. Was it two or the same one twice? Michael Nachman, Director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California, Berkeley, informed me that the California Mouse, Peromyscus californicus, is one of only a few monagamous mice.

Daylight brings Quail call from cool tall grass. Raven hunches high on a tree branch, stretching their neck down and out, expanding their scapulars and broadcasting their amazing guttural drumming sound. Golden Eagle surprised me last summer flying straight over, coming from behind. I heard the whoosh of full strong wings and looked up. With one more soft sounding pump of wings they traveled swiftly from my view. California Sister Butterflies flit and flutter about in shady spots where a bit of moisture lingers in the soil.

Manzanita shares ripe berries as tasty morsels or for making tea. Buckeye Trees, that looked like jungle escapees during spring, begin their browning in early summer. Black Oak’s mature green foliage offers needed shade to all.

Rain may come a few times, brief, in the foothills, or as an afternoon cloudburst in the mountains.

Let’s linger longer in nature. Raise our gaze and be mesmerized again and again by nature matters around here.

How many of you have seen the Milky Way? Here in rural Placerville, it is quite common, but it is reported that as little as 20% of the population have seen the glowing path of stars that mark our own galaxy. There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, about people in Los Angeles who experienced the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The electricity was out so people were sleeping in their yards to avoid the possibility of aftershocks collapsing their homes.

These city dwellers, seeing the glow of the Milky Way for the first time, called the police department to report “a strange glow in the sky.”

Summer is the best season to see our galaxy. The evening sky is facing the galactic core, the nights are warm, and many of us will be vacationing far from the city lights. Take some time on one of the moonless nights

this summer to get outside in a dark location. It can take up to thirty minutes to get fully dark adapted. Here in El Dorado County, the Summer Milky Way should be obvious - it stretches from the North towards the galactic core, which is near our Southern horizon.

You will notice that the band of the Milky Way isn’t uniform. When you are looking at the glow you are seeing light from a myriad of stars that are along the disk of the galaxy. The darker patches within it, even though they may look like holes, are areas that have been obscured by dark dust. The glow should increase as you look from the avenue of light in the North towards the bright core along the southern horizon.

The center of our galaxy, called the bulge, is near the constellation Sagittarius. It is the home of a massive black hole and many older stars.

Looking that direction with a telescope, many star clusters and nebulae are revealed. My favorite summer nebulae are the Trifid, the Lagoon, and the Eagle.

The Summer Triangle is an asterism consisting of three bright stars: Vega, Altair, and Deneb. They become visible in the evening sky in June and are directly overhead in August.

The Milky Way nicely bisects the pattern. Vega, the western most star of the triangle, is the fifth brightest star in our sky not counting the Sun. It is only 25 light years away, so it is one of our closest neighbors.

Altair, the southern point, is not quite as bright but it is only 17 light years away. Deneb, in the east, appears to be the dimmest of the three, but that is because it is 2,600 light years distant.

It would greatly outshine the others, if it was in our neighborhood.

Another celestial event to celebrate during Summer is the Perseid Meteor Shower. These meteors are often called “falling stars” but are bits of debris left behind by passing comets or asteroids. The Perseids are remnants of Comet Swift-Tuttle that last passed close to Earth in 1992. These tiny fragments of rock and dust are seldom larger than a pea and most are about the size of a grain of corn. They produce such an amazing display because they hit our atmosphere at high speed. At thirty to sixty miles per second, they burn up quickly and leave a bright streak in the sky. The peak of this year’s shower falls on the night of August 11th and 12th, but meteors will be impressive for days before and after those dates.

For the best viewing, find a dark, high-altitude location and lay down facing East. Take the time to let your eyes become dark adapted and enjoy the Milky Way as you wait for meteors to appear. Later in the night you can normally expect to see around 100 per hour. With this year’s moonless night, you might see as many as 150 to 200 meteors per hour.

This would also be a great time to visit our local observatory. Placerville is unique in that we have an amazing observatory that is free and open to the public. Located behind Folsom Lake College on Green Valley Road, it is open every Friday and Saturday night when the weather cooperates. See communityobservatory.com for more information.

Fast Freddy's Under New Ownership Fast Freddy’s is a locally owned and operated shop located in Shingle Springs near the intersection of Mother Lode, Ponderosa and South Shingle, and offers not only oil changes and smogs, but also does small service repairs and brakes. Originally started by Fred Wren in 2014, the Fast Freddy’s torch was passed last year to his daughter, Valerie, and son-in-law, Zach.

Many things have stayed the same since the transition of ownership.

Hot Tomato! Helping Tomatoes Beat the Heat

If recent history is any indication, we are in for a long, hot summer. But tomatoes like hot weather, don’t they? Well yes – but not as hot as you think. Tomatoes are happiest at temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees, so when temperatures exceed 90 degrees for weeks on end, it can cause issues. We can’t control the weather and heat, but there are a few things we can do to set our tomatoes up for a successful and productive season.

Plant tomatoes in a spot that gets full sun in the morning and filtered sun in the afternoon.

If still in full sun by the afternoon, create shade for them with a sheet of row cover material or shade cloth. Leave one side of the plants free for morning sun, air circulation, and access for pollinators! Using shade cloth can drop temperatures by as much as 10 degrees which can sometimes be enough to keep tomatoes happy and productive. Shading the plant during the hours of the most intense (afternoon) heat can prevent sunburn and solar yellowing too.

Consistent watering is important to ward off problems such as cracking and blossom end rot. During hot temperatures, tomato leaves will curl to reduce water loss. Curling will not affect fruit production or the health of the plant. Keep in mind that tomato leaves can curl as a result of too much as well as too little water. Too much water can cause roots to rot, and the plant will not recover from root rot. It's easy to check soil moisture by poking a finger an inch into the soil. Only when the top one inch of soil is

dry is it time to water. Mulching will help to keep moisture around tomato plants more even. Use a three inch layer of mulch around tomatoes to help the soil retain moisture and thus stay cooler.

Low fruit yields are one of the most frustrating things about a prolonged heat wave. When we experience daytime temperatures above 90 degrees for an extended period of time, it is just too hot for tomatoes to be pollinated. We see blossoms falling off and plants failing to set fruit. The good news is, most cherry and other small tomato varieties set their fruit over a wider temperature range, so they are less affected by heat extremes. Make a note to plant some of these varieties too.

Giving your tomato plants a bit of protection in the heat of summer will go a long way to helping maintain happy and healthy plants that produce lots of juicy, delicious tomatoes.

Women Making History Part three: Newspaper

by Mary Cory "Women Making History" is part of a continuing series about women who played a part in the history of El Dorado County and is based on the Women of Influence exhibit at the El Dorado County Historical Museum, incorporating historical photographs and artifacts from the Museum's collection. These El Dorado County women were involved with the newspaper business.

The Georgetown Gazette was founded by Horace W. Hulbert in April 1880. The paper was published by the Hulbert family from their home, then merged with the Mountain Democrat and ceased publication in 1922, briefly starting back up 1935 – 1937. It was reactivated in 1972 and continues to be printed today.

Celia and Horace’s oldest daughter, Maude Hulbert Horn (1875-1935) learned the newspaper business from her parents as a girl, and then spent most of her life working on it as manager, editor, then owner. Maude said she grew up “with printer’s ink in her veins.” Maude was made editor of the Georgetown Gazette in 1891 at the age of 16. In 1898 Maude married Jack Horn, the Georgetown Gazette’s type setter. At the time, the Sacramento Bee reported “the bride, who has for several years had charge of the management of the Georgetown Gazette, is one of the brightest newspaper women in California. She has displayed considerable ability as a writer and shrewdness in business affairs.”

Maude belonged to many organizations where she gathered news and socialized with friends. During World War I (1917-18), she directed Red Cross public health and relief efforts. Following World War I Maude attended the League of Nations meeting as an honorary delegate. She joined the Daughters of the American Revolution, was one of the first women to serve as a juror in a County Superior Court trial, and in 1930, was appointed the first woman Justice of the Peace in Georgetown, serving for three years. Three generations of women produced the weekly Georgetown Gazette starting in 1880. Celia Welleford Hulbert (1855-1896) worked alongside her husband Horace to produce the paper every week. She had learned the business from Horace while publishing several other newspapers around Northern California before arriving in Georgetown.

The first issue of the Georgetown Gazette was printed April 9, 1880. Then, in 1886, Horace turned the publishing business over to Celia while he spent most of his time working at his mine, called Bright Hope. Horace wrote that he had “turned the Gazette over to our better half who will...ask only one day of our time each week to make up and do press work.”

Along with being responsible for producing the weekly Georgetown Gazette, Maude and Jack had four children to care for and she was responsible for running their home, as well as being the Gazette’s business manager.

Maude ceased publishing the Georgetown Gazette in 1922 due to economic difficulties, eventually selling off the equipment and subscription list. Following in the footsteps of her parents and grandparents, Maude and Jack’s daughter, Amy Horn Drysdale (1899-1985) learned the newspaper business at her mother’s knee. After Amy moved back to Georgetown in the early 1930s, Maude taught Amy to be a journalist. Amy wrote for the Sacramento Bee, the Auburn Journal and the Mountain Democrat. Amy decided to start up the Georgetown Gazette again in 1935 and was owner and publisher, but due to economic difficulties, the paper folded two years later.

At the age of 24, Bine went to work for W.A. Selkirk, then owner of the Mountain Democrat, learning to set type for the newspaper.

According to Selkirk, the newspaper was an ailing paper when he took it over, managing to keep it alive with the This 1899 photograph shows the Hulbert-Horn home on Church Street help of Bine whom he described as where the Georgetown Gazette was published. On the porch are the “lady printer, Horace, Celia, Maude, baby Amy and John. reporter, and businesswoman.” Bine was also held by her mother. She served as associated with Selkirk’s other Judge for the Georgetown Judicial paper, the Observer-Democrat District for 25 years. Amy was an which soon merged with the active member of the Friends of the Library and the El Dorado County Historical Society, and she worked on historical projects including the 1977 book, “I Remember.”

In 1888, Selkirk made Bine co-publisher and wrote of her promotion, “a year ago it was a serious question whether the old paper, so dear to the hearts of hundreds of our citizens, was to live and prosper or be discontinued… the secret of our new success is due more to Miss Bine V. Ingham than to any ten others…”

Bine loved her work and was known in business to have practical knowledge, good business judgment and wise discretion. She was an honored member of California Press Association and was described by a contemporary as “true-blue” throughout the county in business and her personal life, and known for her many acts of kindness. “It was her nature to make life’s pathway easier for those whom she found making the grade with difficulty,” continued on page 12

 The Mountain Democrat states that it is the oldest newspaper, starting publication in 1851. For many years, the paper was printed on Main Street, in a building now occupied by Placerville Hardware.

The presses were powered by Hangtown Creek, and the Mountain Democrat logo can still be seen on the door leading into the hardware store. During that time, two women, Bine Ingham and Mollie Carpenter, were involved in the production of the Mountain Democrat for many years, beginning in 1880.

Albina Ingham, always known as Bine, was born in 1856 in Illinois and moved to Coloma as a small girl with her parents, George and Sarah.

Bine was raised in Coloma and rode a horse into Placerville daily to attend the prestigious Placerville Academy. Her first job was learning telegraphy at the Coloma telegraph office when she was a teenager.

For many years Bine lodged with Mrs. C.H. Weatherwax and Miss Lulu Weatherwax in their home at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Conrad St. According to her obituary, “Bine Ingham was always associated with the genial smile, the o cheerful disposition, the Vi a n i Alb readiness to indulge in some passing pleasantry or joke.” Bine passed away in 1921 and is buried in the Placerville Union Cemetery.

Mollie Carpenter was the daughter of G. J. Carpenter, who purchased the Mountain Democrat from Selkirk in 1894, and Mollie began working there after she returned from the Boston Conservatory of Music.

Court, and a Railroad Commissioner. For a time, they lived in Sacramento and San Francisco. At age 9, Mollie was playing the organ in the Methodist church; by 12 she was singing in public and continued to sing with the Methodist Choir most of her life.

She attended public schools in Placerville, then high school at the Placerville Academy, and later

taught piano there. In 1885 Mollie went east to attend Wellesley College, then on to the Boston Conservatory of Music. One newspaper article stated that her devotion to family prevented her pursuit of music as a career. However, it goes on to say that “she gave her beautiful voice to comfort the sorrowing.”

Beginning in 1902, Mollie was co-publisher of the Mountain Democrat, and in Mo r llie Carpente 1905 her father presented the newspaper to Molly as a gift. He did continue to write editorials until his death in 1908. Mollie Carpenter and Bine Ingham published the paper jointly from 1910 to 1921. After Bine’s unexpected death, Mollie remained editor of the Mountain Democrat until 1922, when she sold it and retired. Mollie died a year later, two years after the passing of her friend and business partner, Bine Ingham.

Gertrude Kirk, who has appeared in these articles before for her other accomplishments, was also a newspaper woman, working as a journalist with her own byline. She regularly contributed stories to the El Dorado Republican, which her father, W.S. Kirk, purchased in 1908. In 1919, Gertrude joined the Women’s Service of the YMCA and was in France with the American Expeditionary Force working in the canteens where the United States military troops were waiting to be demobilized after the Armistice of World War I. Gertrude wrote a series of articles describing her experiences overseas, which were published in the El Dorado Republican between February and November 1919.

Indian Hattie

One consequence of the El Dorado Indian Wars of 1850-51 was the displacement of Native Americans who lost their homes and extended families. Because their traditional lifestyle was destroyed, the survivors often had to live in an unfamiliar place among unfamiliar people. An example of how two individuals adapted and survived are the lives of Hattie Tom and her Aunt Emma.

Hattie remembered and recounted how she and her Aunt Emma survived: “The white men and the Indians got to fighting.

Her mother put her down on the ground, put brush over her and shook her finger at Hattie saying White man! White Man!” Nobody came back for her until the morning. In fact, it was Emma, Hattie’s mother’s sister who came back for her.

Hattie’s mother had probably been dead for some time, as Hattie recalled much later in life that her mother never saw an American, so she must have been gone by 1849. Emma’s role in Hattie’s life was like that of a godmother who must care for the child in the case of the death of the mother.

While the little girl lay hidden, the rest of the village started to make their escape over an established trade trail that followed Peavine Ridge east, then across the main crest of the Sierra Nevada to Carson Valley, or perhaps to seek shelter among the people of Chief Washo Ben, whose village was near where the town of Meyers, California is located today. Captain Tom, Hattie’s father and the leader of their village, was friendly with Washo Ben. They may have become acquainted during the annual exchange of pine nuts from Nevada for acorns from California.

Throughout the El Dorado Indian Wars the natives sought the protection of the mountains where they had the advantage of knowing the terrain, and where there were places to hide known only to them. The path of Hattie’s people took them by way of what we now call Desolation Valley. Hattie said a big snow came and they all froze to death. That, according to Hattie, is how Desolation Valley got its name.

Hattie and Emma were survivors of a village of Southern Mountain Nisenan. This is a group of Native Americans that took the brunt of the Now Serving El Dorado Indian WESTERN EL DORADO COUNTY Wars. Consider this account of a series of attacks beginning VIDEOS on January 25, 1851, ON by the militia on the DEMAND! villages located on the ridges dividing the South Fork of the American El Dorado County’s River from its Public Access northern tributary, Television Station Silver Creek. now called Peavine and Telephone Ridges. Following a march of twenty-five miles from their headquarters at Johnson’s Ranch, (now Apple Mountain Golf Resort,) the El Dorado militia reached their goal: an Indian village on the north side of the South Fork of the American River. Even in the gloom of a winter evening, with cook fires still smoldering, they could see it had been vacated only about an hour before. The moment the militia set fire to their lodges, they heard the Indians howling like wolves, so the militia knew they weren’t far away. The weary militia set out in pursuit, and did manage to engage a few in battle, taking some casualties, as the rest of the Indians faded into the darkness. The following morning the militia crossed over the dividing ridge of the North Fork of the South Fork and marched down to destroy the three lower and smaller villages. While this account wasn’t specific as to why they were targeted, this action follows Indian Hattie, right several newspaper articles that mention the Indians stealing cattle and taking them up on this ridge. It was a common practice to burn whatever the militia found in a deserted village to discourage the return of its occupants.

In later years as adults, Emma and Hattie drifted back to the place they continued to think of as home. On May 20, 1897, Emma filed under the provisions of the Indian Homestead Act of 1875, for a Homestead Patent on their home. We are indebted to the patent file for a description of her place. She had a good log house, sixteen by eighteen feet, with a wood floor and shake roof, complete with doors and windows. She had about sixty assorted fruit trees and a fenced acre for a garden, as well as land suitable for grazing. The file also tells us that she was single and that she had occupied this place for many years prior to filing. From the file we get the impression she was friendly with her neighbors because they provided the necessary witnesses for her to prove her claim. There is a high likelihood that both Emma, who died on December 3, 1908, and Hattie’s son, who died “about 1900” are buried there. The exact location of their graves is unknown.

An ethnologist working in the area in the early twentieth century recorded: “These two old squaws (Emma and Hattie?) live here alone on this mountain and are the most aboriginal in temper and hospitality I ever saw. They are Nician (sic) people and have seen very few whites at this place during the past thirty years.”

When Emma died in 1908, Hattie was her sole heir. The probate file establishes the relationship between the two women, and that Emma had no family, other than her niece Hattie. It also establishes Hattie’s true age. Hattie’s obituary made the claim that she was a hundred years old at the time of her death in 1928. This information was provided by the county hospital, where she died. However, in her statement in the probate file of her aunt, Hattie gives her age as “about sixty.”

So eighteen years later when Hattie died, she would have been closer to eighty years of age. The actual ages and birthdates, as well as the Nisenan names for both women, are lost to us. It was not the custom of the Nisenan to share their names with others. The use of the surname “Tom” comes from the belief that their father, and we know the two women did not share a father, was “Captain Tom.” Tom is fairly common among the names assigned to local natives by Americans. Emma and Hattie are names that were popular among Americans at the time and undoubtedly given to them by some of the first Americans with whom they came in contact. Since there were so few settlers in the area in 1851, it is a good possibility that the soldiers brought the two girls back to militia headquarters at Johnson’s Ranch where the wife of Johnson’s partner, Sophronia Phillips, herself the mother of two little girls, may have taken them in.

A letter printed in the Mountain Democrat on January 11, 1929, entitled “About Hattie Tom” is valuable for the information it provides about Hattie as a young woman. The writer of the letter said she had lived near Hattie in Camino.

She wrote that Hattie married a white man by the name of Boles, who was originally from one of the Southern states.

closely. He told her that her husband had been his tent-mate through the last years of the Civil War, a soldier of the Confederate Army. Hattie probably didn’t understand why her husband would feel the need to leave her and risk his life to fight for a cause she didn’t understand in a place far away.

Shingle Springs was the last place Hattie knew him to be. He had gone there to begin the long journey home to what was then a hostile nation. He must have spoken Hattie Tom warmly of her to his tent-mate, that he would take the time to look Hattie up after the war. It is probable that Boles died before the end of the war and was unable to return.

at the time that he made this observation. Plenty of people in El Dorado County would be amused if an outsider such as this researcher found Hattie & Emma to be reclusive. Hattie had lived for extensive periods of time in the households of several of the old families of the county. She spent quite a bit of time on the Rupley Ranch, where Native Americans were welcome.

Hattie also cooked and washed for several families over the years, where she was always well liked by the children. Hattie was a regular visitor at the home of Milt Morris, the United States Forest Service Ranger assigned to Pacific Ranger Station.

She became good friends with his wife and children, often joining them for lunch.

The recollections of Lloyd Morris, the son of Milt Morris, the ranger assigned to the Pacific Ranger Station, confirmed that Hattie was once married. He recalls her husband as a Dutchman whose last name was Tom. In 1927, and again in 1928, ethnographers interviewed Hattie Tom. Both she and other informants described the place of her birth as “a small settlement near a spring on a rocky hillside on the north side of the South Fork of the American River.

This description fits both the place Emma homesteaded, and the place on maps now known as “Indian Hattie’s.” In the days before the Americans arrived, the Nisenan would move their camps often, yet it has been said that most Nisenans would die within a mile of where they were born. Hattie followed that migratory pattern, staying at times at Fresh Pond at the Pacific Ranger Station where she had made a traditional cedar bark house, or at the place she inherited from Emma, and at times with families in the Camino area. While she ate with the families who befriended her, she also prepared the traditional Native American diet for herself. Hattie had a favorite rock where she wore several mortar holes grinding acorns, a staple of the Nisenan diet. She was known for her woven baskets made in the traditional fashion of her people. continued on page 15

continued from page 14 On a blustery day in late September of 1925, Hattie’s days on her own came to an end. Ranger Morris went to check on Hattie and found her badly injured by a fallen tree limb. Before Ranger Morris could render first aid to Hattie he had to cut away some of her long black hair, an act Hattie found outrageous and hard to forgive. He took her to the hospital in Placerville where she was treated and where she stayed and lived until her death on December 26, 1928. While she was living at the hospital, another anthropologist tried to interview her about her life, but noted that whenever Hattie reflected on her early days, she was so consumed by the despicable actions of the whites against her people she had trouble concentrating on his questions.

When Hattie died, she was buried in the Indian cemetery on the Jack Johnson Ranch. Her passing was noted with an obituary and a ceremony attended by many citizens who had known her for most of their lives.

El Dorado Western Railroad Welcomes New Locomotive On May 18, a gathering of locals, railroad enthusiasts and El Dorado Western Railroad volunteers welcomed a 65 ton GE to our family of locomotives.

The donation from the California Trolley & Railroad Corporation was met with a lot of excitement and interest as it was carefully unloaded onto the tracks. As rehabilitation and refurbishment of the flat car and 1094 Caboose continue, the 65 ton takes its place in line.

The 65 ton GE locomotive, and an identical twin, were delivered new to Kaiser Permanente (Cupertino) in 1941.

The two shared switching duties at the large facility for the next 30 years. About 1970, the company bought a used SW1500 to replace both 65 tonners. The 881-002 was kept as a backup for the 1500 while the second 65 Tonner was scrapped on site. At some point, Kaiser replaced an original engine with a newer Cummins version. It has operated on the one engine for several decades. In the mid

90s, our organization was alerted that Kaiser wanted to scrap the 881-002 and a donation was arranged with a provision that it would be stored at the cement plant.

It was stored for the next 20 years until we decided to move it The 65 Ton GE arrives! via truck to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds to join SP 4-62 #2479 for a proposed railroad museum. For an industrial locomotive, it is rather complete.

Sadly, its original horn was given to an employee upon his retirement. She had resided in Santa Clara County since 1941, but is now home at the Shingle Springs Depot, waiting for her turn to be back in operation.

The Railroad Comes to El Dorado County The Sacramento Valley Railroad: First Railroad West of the Mississippi

by Mary Cory The discovery of a nugget of gold in 1848 in the tailrace of Sutter’s Mill in Coloma sparked the California Gold Rush.

Quickly, bustling mining towns brought about an endless demand for building materials, dry goods, mining equipment and other goods. Freight arriving by sea in San Francisco traveled up river to Sacramento. From there, teamsters hauled heavily loaded wagons up dusty rutted roads to the mines. The Comstock boom of the 1860s in Virgina City brought a second wave of fortune seekers up the waterways and over the poor, yet welltraveled roads of the Sacramento Valley and the Mother Lode region.

Clearly, the business of transporting passengers and freight to the mining camps netted huge profits. In 1852, Colonel Charles Lincoln Wilson and his wife turned their sights toward creating what would become “The First Railroad in the West.”On August 16, 1852, the proposed Sacramento Valley Railroad (SVRR) began mapping the line from Sacramento to its final destination of Marysville. Meanwhile, Wilson headed to New York to raise more capital, purchase rolling stock and to find an engineere Theodore Judah - who had just completed work on the Niagara River Gorge Railroad. Judah jumped at the chance, and after arriving in California in April 1854, went to work surveying the railroad. Construction of the Sacramento Valley Railroad began in February of 1855.

June 1855 saw the arrival of passenger cars, ties, turntables and signboard signals shipped by sea from Boston to San Francisco. During July and August 1855, railroad ties and iron were laid along the line at the rate of two blocks a day. The original rails, made of English iron and weighing 60 pounds per yard, set in wrought iron chains fastened to the ties with halfpound spikes.

Progress along the line moved at full speed until October 1855. Then the Sacramento Valley Railroad Company went broke. Wilson was replaced by Captain Joseph Folsom, who owned thousands of acres of land. He granted the Sacramento Valley Railroad (SVRR) a long strip of rightof-way over his land.

When Captain Folsom died suddenly in July 1855, his executors renamed the town in his honor. Folsom was replaced as SVRR president by two San Francisco business men, Cornelius Garrison and William Tecumseh Sherman, later famous as the Civil War general. The company completed the building of the railroad to Folsom on Washington’s Birthday - February 22, 1856.

That sunny morning, enthusiastic onlookers gathered in Sacramento to cheer two trains as they departed for Folsom.

The locomotive “Sacramento”, with its gold leaf curlicues and brass lamps, pulled the first train consisting of six flat-roofed passenger coaches with wooden seats and tiny windows. A second long train of platform cars pulled by the locomotive 16

“Nevada”, known later as the “Pioneer”, followed. Senator Wilson Flint proclaimed, “This day you are witnessing the inauguration of a railway that will one day within the lives of the oldest and youngest present, span the continent and embrace out two oceans.”

Business along the new rail line was slow at first, but the discovery of silver in the Virginia City Comstock mines in 1859 proved a bonanza for both the railroad and the mining companies. However, the SVRR was staggeringly in debt. High interest loans and extreme building costs plagued the company.

The SVRR scrapped its plans to extend the line beyoond Folsom.

While the company struggled, Folsom flourished as the main distribution point of passengers and freight headed to Nevada. Freight Miner’s Hotel, Mormon Island storage, lumberyards, hotels and other businesses sprang up.

Trains from Sacramento arrived in Folsom three times each day.

More than twenty stagecoach companies set up in Folsom. Even the Pony Express tood advantage of the train. Only in operation from April 1860 to October 1861, the Pony Express riders would take the mail on the train to Sacramento when their schedules coincided.

The citizens of Placerville wanted and needed rail service “for its self-preservation” they said. So, on January 30, 1860, a meeting was held at the El Dorado County Courthouse in Placerville to discuss the possibility of building a line from Folsom to their city.

They drew up a series of resolutions, the principal one being “That a railroad between Placerville and Folsom is essential to the prosperity of the city, that the road is entirely practicable and may be constructed in a short time.”

On June 12, 1862, a new company, the Placerville and Sacramento Valley Railroad (P&SVRR) was formed to extend the railroad line from Folsom to Placerville. Construction started in 1863, just a few months after the “Big Four” (Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford, Collis Huntington and Charles Crocker) who owned the Central Pacific Railroad’s eastbound route through Auburn and the Donner Pass. While progress moved quickly for the Big Four, work on the P&SVRR got off to a slow start. Most of the track they ordered lay at the bottom of the sea in ships sunk by Confederate privateers.

In 1864, the rails reached Latrobe at the western edge of El Dorado County, and by June 1865, extended to Shingle Springs.

Although the P&SVRR was making money, it had no means of financing the remaining construction to Placerville or meeting its looming bond payments.

The P&SVRR came under control of the Southern Pacific Railroad a month later and served Placerville for the next ninety-nine years. Known as the “Placerville Branch”, the railroad was an instrumental part of the the growing timber, dairy and fruit industries in El Dorado County. The tracks were eventually built east, to the Upper Main Street part of Placerville, where another turntable was built to meet the lumber trains from Camino. Along with hauling freight, such as newly milled lumber and fruit, especially pears packed in the large Placerville Fruit Growers Association facility, the Southern Pacific Railroad also carried passengers until the 1940s.

With the railroad on the verge of bankruptcy, the P&SVRR was sold to the Central Pacific Railroad in 1865. This ended the independent existence of California’s first commercial railroad.

The new owners halted the planned expansion to Placerville, and instead concentrated their efforts on the Central Pacific Railroad. When the Central Pacific reached Reno on the route through Auburn, it quickly became the gateway to the Comstock and continued east to Promontory Point, Utah, completing the first Transcontinental Railroad.

Shingle Springs, as the terminus of the P&SVRR in El Dorado County, was a bustling commercial center for many years where wagons met the trains and then hauled the freight to Placerville.

Southern Pacific Railroad ceased all commercial operations to Placerville in 1986. The corridor was eventually sold to the Sacramento Placerville Transportation Corridor Joint Powers Authority, and it is now managed as a “rails with trails” recreation corridor, with the El Dorado Trail and excursion railroads, including the El Dorado Western Railroad, a living history program of the El Dorado County Historical Museum.

With a general reduction in all mining on the Western Slope, El Dorado County and the City of Placerville could not pay off the bonds due in 1876.Placerville’s City Council simply resigned, as did the County Board of Supervisors, leaving no one responsible for the project and the financial obligation. Finally, after reorganizing the railroad company again, the tracks and three stations were completed to Placerville in March 1888.

Tech Trek

American Association of University Women

by Sharon Lawrence American Association of University Women (AAUW) began in 1881 when a small group of women college graduates banded together to encourage more women to seek higher education. AAUW has published hundreds of research reports, from an 1885 paper disproving a prevailing myth that college impairs a woman’s fertility to, most recently, a study documenting the economic impact of workplace sexual harassment. We have supported the academic achievements of many thousands of scholars, from scientist Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, to astronaut Judith Resnik, the second woman to travel in space.

Though we are nonpartisan, we are not values-neutral: We fight to remove the barriers and biases that stand in the way of gender equity. We train women to negotiate for pay and benefits and to pursue leadership roles.

The Foothills of El Dorado County Branch was originally founded on March 8, 1947 as the Placerville Branch. The principal activity of the branch at that time was co-sponsoring, along with the Placerville P.T.A., the establishment of a County Library. The branch awarded our first college scholarship to Ceodola Veerkamp in 1949. Over the ensuing years our branch was instrumental in the establishment of a full time public health department, expansion of our county high school district, establishment of the local League of Women Voters, as we continued to provide scholarships for both entering and returning women college students.

Most recently our branch has been focused on sponsoring Middle School girls to attend Tech Trek. Tech Trek is a summer camp for middle school girls that focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Campers spend one week on a university campus – they live in the dorms, eat in the cafeteria, attend labs and classes, and learn what it might be like to be a college student. Most recently the camp is also being offered in a virtual format. With help from generous sponsors, including Soroptimists Placerville, Soroptimists El Dorado Hills-Cameron Park, Youngdahl Consulting Group, Inc, The Latrobe Fund and Sutter Mill Parlor 336 Native Daughters of the Golden West we have been able to send several girls to Tech Trek each summer.

Our 2023 Tech Trek campers will tell us about their camp experiences at our Tech Trek luncheon on Saturday September 30, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM at Faith Episcopal Church, 2200 Country Club Drive, Cameron Park, CA 95682.

Our branch also offers a social aspect with various interest groups including a play reading group, multiple book groups and an out to lunch bunch. You can see our latest newsletter at https://eldoradoca.aauw.net/.

Both AAUW National and California have several active programs in addition to Tech Trek.

How Wine Is Judged

When I visit the wineries in El Dorado County wine country, I take note of the countless ribbons and medals that have been earned and awarded. Every year wineries submit a bottle each of their best wines to county, state, national and international wine competitions.

The results bring credibility and sales in a big way. Consumers who have sometimes not been aware of their winery now hear it's top tier.

So how does the judging work? I had the rare privilege as a journalist to "sip and spit."

It is 1998 at the Grandfather of California wine competitions, the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, with roots going back to 1855 in Sacramento, CA. At 8:00a, we picked up our name tags - mine said "guest judge" and was different from the real judges. I was in a room with all of the Greats of the wine community: people like Darrell Corti, John Parducci, Alex Sebastiani and many of the El Dorado County winemakers.

I was assigned to the Zinfandel panel, tasting with winemakers Scott Harvey from Folie a Deux and Nancy Walker from Fetzer Winery. The panel also included Mike Dunn, food and

wine writer for the Sacramento Bee, and Jason Brant Lewis, PR Director for Storrs Winery.

The Chief Judge was "Pooch" Pucilowski who explained to all of the panels in the room, each assigned to a different wine varietal, that we would taste 40 wines at a time. We would be judging a flight of 40, then a flight of 22 and the last flight of 49 wines with this new system, at a total of 111 wines.

That day 12,000 bottles were judged. Each flight is poured in a private room, rolled out on carts to each panelist and presented blind. We sniff each of the first 40 and sort our favorites. Then taste and re-sort, hunting for Gold, Silver and Bronze medal ratings. At the end of each flight, the judges at each table gather and discuss their scores and combine the scores, then present them to the officials. My scores don't count since I was a guest judge, but my scores were 75% in agreement with the real judges.

as enthusiastic and fresh at 3:30p as they had been at 8:00a.

I pay wine judges my immense respect!

When my children first began to talk, one of the first phrases they learned was a request to be picked up. They would stand at my feet, stretch their tiny hands into the air, and say, “Hold you!” Of course, what they actually meant was, “Hold me! Pick me up! I want to be in your arms!” Their mistake was understandable. Before they had the words, they would simply reach their arms into the air, and my wife or I would ask, “Do you want me to hold you?” So they adopted the end of that question to form their Call first to verify es. tim worship

They were not amused by this.

Once I had picked them up, I liked to play a little game where I would loosen my arms for a second, allowing them to drop an inch or two. This would eventually induce giggles, but their first reaction would be to grab on to me. If I was lucky, they would grab a fistful of my shirt.

stress and difficulty, I have grasped for Him, fearing that I would fall.

God is my Father and I want to be held by Him, but so often I have felt that I had to be the one holding on.

As a father myself, I now recognize that God has always been the One holding me. There was never any danger of falling because He is strong enough to support me in my weakness. It is as King David wrote in Psalm 139:9-10, “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

I know now that I can rest in the strength of God and His love for me.

He will never let me go, even when I try to get away.

My children have not always wanted to be held. There are times when it is necessary to hold a toddler against their will. When they want to run where it is not safe.

When they need a nap but would rather continue to play. When it is time to go, but they would much rather stay. At these moments, I hold them tight as their legs kick and their arms flail. They scream and

And I think God feels the same way about me. As often as I have tried to cling to God, there have also been times when I have tried to run from Him. I have tried to wiggle out of His grasp, but He has always held firm. The Father’s love for me is not something that I earn and not what I deserve. It is by grace alone that God loves me unconditionally. He will hold me even when I struggle to escape. He pursues me with grace and mercy.

In Romans 8:38-39, the Apostle Paul writes, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. He will hold us. We can trust in His strength and love. With this assurance, may you find peace, hope, and rest in Jesus.

Homemade Salsa Prep Time: 5 min. * 1 1/4 lbs ripe Roma tomatoes* (about 5 - 6) * 1 (14.5 oz) can petite diced tomatoes * 2 green onions, ends trimmed, chopped into thirds * 1/3 c chopped red onion 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and roughly chopped * 1/3 c. fresh cilantro (about a handful) * 1 large clove garlic, roughly chopped * 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice * 1/2 tsp chili powder * 1/4 tsp ground cumin * 1/2 tsp granulated sugar (optional) * Salt and pepper to taste 1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and pulse in 1 second bursts until all ingredients are finely chopped.

2. Serve with tortilla chips. Note that salsa always tastes best after it's been refrigerated for a few hours, so if time allows, let the flavors marinate together before serving.

3. Store in refrigerator up to 1 week.

Mediterranean Shrimp & Rice Servings: 4 Cook Time: 25 min. * * * * * * * * * * *

2 tbsp. olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 7 oz pkg. rice pilaf mix, uncooked 1 1/2 c. water 12 oz. can tiny shrimp, drained and liquid reserved 1/4 tsp. dried oregano 1/4 tsp. dried mint 14 1/2 oz. diced tomatoes, canned or fresh, drained* 2 oz. can chopped black olives, drained 1/2 c. grated parmesan cheese

Heat oil in skillet over medium heat.

Add onion, garlic and rice mix, setting aside seasoning packet: cook and stir until ricce is golden.

3. Add seasoning packet, water, reserved shrimp liquid and herbs.

4. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, until rice is tender.

5. Stir in shrimp, tomatoes and olives.

6. Simmer for 8-10 minutes, until heated through 7. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese.. * For extra flavor, use the tomato liquid in place of some of the water. *

Lemon Blueberry Sheet Pan Pancakes Serves 6-8 * * * * * * * * * * * *

½ c. unsalted butter melted, divided 3 c. blueberries, divided 2 Tbsp. lemon juice ½ c. granulated sugar, divided 2 c. AP flour 2 tbsp. baking powder ½ tsp kosher salt 4 lg eggs, separated 1 tub (15 oz.) ricotta cheese 2 tbsp. lemon zest 1 c. whole milk Powdered sugar, whip cream and maple syrup, for serving

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Grease a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray AND line with parchment paper. Set aside. (Trust me on this) 2. Combine 2 c. of blueberries, the lemon juice and 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar in a medium bowl. Let stand for 15 minutes or so until the juices get a little syrupy.

3. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in another medium bowl.

4. In a large bowl, whisk egg yolks, ricotta cheese, remaining 6 Tbsp. granulated sugar, 6 Tbsp. melted butter, the lemon zest and milk to blend.

5. In a third medium bowl, beat egg whites with a mixer until soft peaks form.

6. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, whisking until smooth.

7. Fold in egg whites.

8. Spread batter in prepared pan, smoothing top with a spatula.

9. Evenly sprinkle blueberry-sugar mixture on top.

10. Bake until the center is set and springs back when touched, 12-14 minutes. Remove the pancake from the oven. Set the oven to broil (do not move the rack from the middle shelf).

11. Brush remaining 2 Tbsp. of melted butter over the top of the pancake. Broil until golden brown (2 minutes – no longer!)

12. Cut the pancake into 12 squares. Stack 2 pancakes per serving dollop with whip cream and put remaining blueberries on top and dust with powdered sugar. Maple syrup is optional, serve on the table if guests want more sweetness.

Blueberry Yogurt Clusters Prep Time: 45 min. * * * * *

1 pint blueberries 1 c. vanilla Greek yogurt ¼ c. chopped almonds ¼ c. shaved coconut 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips * 1 tbsp coconut oil 1.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Place the blueberries, vanilla greek yogurt, almonds and coconut in a large bowl and stir to combine.

Using a 1.5 tablespoon-size spring loaded cookie scoop, scoop 16 clusters on the prepared baking sheet. Freeze for 20 minutes.

Place the chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave at 30 second intervals.

Stir the chocolate in between each 30 seconds until the chocolate is melted.

Use a fork to hold each blueberry yogurt cluster and dip in the melted chocolate. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off.

Transfer the clusters back to the baking sheet and allow them to set for 5 minutes. Enjoy immediately and store any leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer.
