From the Editor Inspiration for this column comes from many things.This time it’s the challenging experience of being without internet for 11 days. I was surprised by the freeing feeling that comes with not being toggled to technology! I’m inclined to enjoy the benefits, but it can become too absorbing. I wish I could be more like my son, who recently traded his smartphone for a flip model. Those of you who know him wouldn’t be surprised; after all, he lives in a treehouse. That’s another story for another day!.

I’m a big believer in print publications and love having a part in keeping print alive. Nothing affirms the importance of print like being without internet access. When technology breaks down and we can’t read our online news sources or go to Netflix to binge watch our favorite series, we pick up our books and magazines. If there’s an internet outage, our print products don’t disappear! In fact, we keep them on our coffee tables and look through them multiple times, catching something new with each read.

Even if you don’t find yourself without internet, why not try an occasional technology fast? When television gets boring and the political news, fake or otherwise, is too much to handle, reach for your books and magazines (especially Around Canton!). We work hard to pack each issue with enough information that you’ll turn to them as your source for local news in this era when fewer and fewer newspapers and other print products have that focus.

Despite developments in technology - or maybe because of them - there’s still a demand for the written word in a printed format that can be held, stuffed in a purse or briefcase, or stashed in the car console to help pass the time spent waiting in carpool.

Grab your phone (or your wall calendar) and plug in the dates for the Canton festivities that you don’t want to miss. You’ll find a schedule on page 18, the community calendar on page 36 and the listing of library events on page 40. If you’ve held on to your favorite library books a little too long, be sure to take advantage of the fine forgiveness offered April 9-15, a special treat in honor of National Library Week.

While you’re in the planning mode, circle the summer camps on page 58 that might interest your children. Make your calls soon, though, because they can fill up quickly.

She was recently named the public outreach manager for the city of Canton, and continues to volunteer on numerous boards and committees. Pharmacist Dale Coker owns Cherokee Custom Script Pharmacy in Holly Springs and lives in Woodstock with wife Susan. The University of Georgia graduate is vice president of the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. His community involvement has included Cherokee County Habitat for Humanity, youth league coaching and church leadership.

Dale’s latest achievement is co-inventing the patented TopiCLICK, a topical metered dosing device.

Cindy Crews is a longtime Cherokee County educator.

She joined the Sixes community as assistant principal of Sixes Elementary School in 2011 and is now principal. Cindy and her husband, Andy, have lived in Woodstock for more than 20 years, and they have two young adult daughters.

Her motto: Children are the future of the human race; teach them well.

Dr. Joe McKechnie senior pastor of Sixes United Methodist Church, grew up in Cobb County. After earning a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Georgia, Joe spent six years as a television sportscaster. He has a master’s degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and a doctorate of ministry from Southern Methodist University. Joe and wife Catherine have two children, David and Grace Ann. Sonia Carruthers is the executive director and CEO of Cherokee FOCUS and the Cherokee Youth Works program, based in Holly Springs. The Cherokee County native grew up in Canton and lives in Woodstock with her son and daughter. She is very active in the community and currently serves with local and regional organizations to strengthen families and children.

Chantel Adams is the founder and CEO of Forever We, Inc., a socially responsible toy company that believes every child deserves a forever family, safe housing and a healthy body. She has a biology degree from the University of Evansville, serves on the Executive Board of Highland Rivers Health, and volunteers with the Cherokee County Juvenile Court. Chantel and her husband, Gavin, live in Canton and have four children.

With the grand opening scheduled for May 6, the new Northside Hospital Cherokee, visible from I-575 just south of Exit 19, is receiving the final touches. The replacement hospital will have more than double the square footage of the current facility and offer all existing services.

Along with cutting-edge technology and exceptional patient care, the hospital’s design pays special homage to the county’s unique landscape, heritage and community. The facility’s motif uses a deliberate mix of art, architecture and interior design to create a modern-yet-familiar atmosphere for patients and their families.

North Georgia’s remarkable economic growth and the natural vistas that make Cherokee one of the most beautiful places in the state became the foundation for the design of the replacement hospital, which sits on a 50-acre parcel.

“Our team adopted the theme Where Metro Meets the Mountains to embody the modern nature of the hospital, as well as the lakes, forests and mountains that surround it,” said Kris Kirchner, IIDA, ASID, Principal of K2J, Inc., the interior design firm for the project.

In keeping with this vision, mountainous elements such as stacked stone, terrazzo tile and earthen tones intermingle with sleek steel and expansive windows throughout the building.

Themes of valleys, lakes, farmland and other concepts also are represented in separate departments to simplify way-finding for visitors. The Women’s Center, for example, uses grays, purples and jewel tones in the furniture and finishes to reflect its “mica” theme — a mineral prevalent in the Cherokee area. In the emergency, critical care and surgery departments, cool paint tones conjure a “lake” motif, also providing a soothing atmosphere for patients.

Coupled with the broad windows in each patient room, the hospital’s placement was specifically oriented so that patients and their families have open views of the Blue Ridge Mountains that etch the North Georgia horizon.

The artwork featured in the hospital reflects themes such as trails, summits, farms and lakes, and was created exclusively by Georgia artists and artisans. The galleria area of the main lobby includes a glass composition comprised of hundreds of blown-glass elements that visitors can experience from a variety of vantage points as they travel through the corridor. A rotating art exhibit will feature paintings and drawings from Cherokee County grade school students throughout the year.

April 9-15: Celebrate National Library Week The Sequoyah Regional Library System will offer fine forgiveness, one of many programs Cherokee County residents can take advantage of during National Library Week, April 9-15.

During this week only, past and present fines up to $15 per library card will be dismissed.

Residents need to visit their local branch to participate; some fees may be excluded from the offer. Free replacement cards also will be available.

Libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies, learn how to use a 3D printer or even borrow a sewing machine.

Community members – elected officials to toddlers - depend upon libraries and the resources they offer. The Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED) recently unveiled a multi-year plan to enhance the county’s workforce.

“The major component of the Workforce Cherokee Strategy is collaborating with industry and education to ensure each side benefits. Cherokee County has a skilled workforce and as we continue to recruit new employers and further opportunities for start-ups through the new Fresh Start Cherokee entrepreneurship program, growing and strengthening that skilled workforce is essential,” COED President Misti Martin said. “We want Cherokee to be the strongest workforce supply chain in Georgia.”

Part of the project includes starting young, and that means working with K-12 and post-secondary education officials to make sure students are given the opportunity to succeed in a field that represents their strengths and provides employers with employees who enjoy their industry.

“We have a great opportunity here to work from kid to CEO – it will help students find career paths that are right for them,” Martin said. Workforce Cherokee also addresses the need for retaining their students as part of the quality workforce.

“The Workforce Cherokee plan will also launch a young professionals scholarship that will provide real-world internship opportunities,” Martin said, adding that high school seniors will be able to apply and interview for the scholarship opportunity.

Students will be offered college credit for their professional development during the internship. In addition to the opportunity for the student, the scholarship program also makes connections to employers searching Cherokee’s best and brightest.

The Cherokee Workforce Collaborative was developed by industry leaders of growing corporations, Cherokee County School District, COED, Cherokee’s Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Department of Labor, Atlanta Regional Commission, Chattahoochee Technical College, Reinhardt University, Kennesaw State University, entrepreneurs and local nonprofits.

The work sessions were facilitated by the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, the same group that facilitated Georgia’s High Demand Career Initiative, an effort driven by Gov. Nathan Deal to prepare Georgia for growing job sectors.

The Workforce Cherokee Plan includes four distinct goals, three of which are chaired by industry champions: 1. Internships (Chair – Russ Sanders of FactoryMation): Retain and attract Cherokee County graduates through high quality internship experiences for secondary and postsecondary students.

2. Innovative Career Preparation (Chair – Aaron Ingram of NeoMed): Pilot a Cherokee College and Career Academy Model.

3. Business and Education Alliances (Chair – Danny Meece of Inalfa Roof Systems): Strengthen partnerships and align resources and programs through purposeful business and industry interactions.

4. Sustaining the Momentum – Strengthening partnerships for talent development.

#PlayinCanton Day a #Success More than 1,000 people attended the city of Canton’s Parks and Recreation’s #PlayinCanton day at Etowah River Park, an event designed to highlight the area’s fitness opportunities. World War I exhibit “Doughboys and the Home Front: The Great War in Cherokee County” is open at the Cherokee County History Museum and Canton Visitors Center at 100 North St. in Canton. The exhibit focuses on the United States’ entry into WW I and the effect on Cherokee County and Georgia. The exhibit highlights the efforts of citizens on the front and at home, and draws attention to our soldiers who valiantly served, as well as the women and families at home.

As part of the exhibit, the museum offers an in-depth look at the United States School Garden Army, created in 1917 to encourage children to garden as a way to avoid a food crisis during wartime. Students have a chance to learn about Liberty Gardens (later Victory Gardens) as well as how to start their own garden at home. The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Cancer Patients Should Have a Choice

You may have seen the commercials showing a couple at a restaurant to share a meal together. As the couple begins to look over the menu, the waitress comes over and asks where they are from. “Georgia,” they reply innocently. The waitress then informs them they will have to leave, because the restaurant has met the legal limit of the number of Georgians it may serve. Sounds crazy, right?

The commercial, funded by Speak Now Georgia, is intended to show the absurdity of a state law that allows only 35 percent of patients at a specific Georgia treatment center to be Georgia residents. Imagine if you had cancer and wanted to go to a specific treatment center in Georgia. Imagine that the cancer treatment center turns you away because of this law. Now, that sounds really crazy, right?

As a member of the House Governmental Affairs Committee, I recently participated in a hearing on legislation that would gradually repeal the law on the cancer treatment centers’ arbitrary cap on the number of patients treated from Georgia.

When I walked in the room, there was a nervous energy in the air. The committee hearing was packed with lobbyists for hospitals all around Georgia, and they had come to testify against the bill.

We heard testimony from a stage-four brain cancer patient from one of these cancer treatment facilities. He told how he

chose the place for his treatment and why. We then heard from the CEO of one of these facilities, who testified that last year they had to turn away 70 cancer patients because they had met the cap. My heart began to break for these patients whose choices had been limited by a senseless law.

When the attorney for a major hospital system gave testimony against the bill, I took the opportunity to ask him a question: “I want you to look me in the eye and imagine for a moment that I am one of the 70 cancer patients that had to be turned away from that facility last year. What do you say to me?”

He looked away and replied, “I would tell them that it is the law.”

“Do you believe that is fair?” I responded.

“I believe it is the law,” he replied, “and if the cancer treatment center wanted to treat you, then they could pay a $2 million fine for being over their cap and they could treat you.”

“So, you want the cancer treatment center to have to pay a $2 million fine to treat one patient. Do you think that is fair?”

elissa Mintz says she did not grow up thinking, “One day I would like to channel energy through my hands.”

Not Your Average Pet Rescue

When I sat down with the founder of Green Pets America (GPA), Steven Monahan, I learned quickly that nothing about this organization is basic. During this 10-year anniversary of rescuing, renewing and rehoming almost 1,000 death-row shelter animals throughout Georgia, it’s eyeopening to see the variety of good deeds the volunteers have done for the welfare of our furry friends.

Green Pets America started as a simple food pantry, buying food for Papa’s Pantry, MUST Ministries, Cherokee Animal Shelter, local trailer parks and anywhere hungry pets lived. “When I first started, I asked the food pantries if they had pet food to give away, and none of them did. I worked to get pet food distributed across the county for families facing hard times who have pets. There are now 20 donation boxes across Cherokee and Cobb counties.

Our mission then and now is to keep families and pets together, especially for those facing difficulties,” Monahan said.

Since the beginning, they have worked in many areas of pet welfare, like working to get service dogs for children with disabilities, providing funds for medical care, spaying and neutering, educating children in our schools about how to treat family pets humanely, and, of course, rescuing and fostering.

Monahan even squeezed in some time to write an animal welfare book: “Rescue Renew Rehome.” The name Green Pets was chosen to reflect the philosophy that pets are a precious resource to be sustained, and not discarded.

The organization also supports the Woodstock Police Department’s working K9s, giving them the love, dignity and respect they deserve. “We think the world of Mr. Monahan and Green Pets,” Chief of Police Calvin Moss said. “They were instrumental in providing a key donation to build a kennel here at the city annex to give our K9s a safe place to be outside during good weather, free to walk about while their officers are filling out reports to close out the day.”

Monahan is grateful for the support that has carried them through the first decade of service.

“We are happy and blessed to celebrate 10 years of service here in Cherokee County. This is a community effort, and we want to thank the hundreds of you who have helped make Green Pets America such a great success, making our vision to keep families and pets together a reality,” Monahan said.

As GPA enters its second decade, the focus will remain on rescuing, fostering, paying veterinary bills for those who can’t afford it, and offering holistic pet foods. Monahan has researched the best brands for pets and includes a link to them on the Green Pets website (www.greenpetsamerica.org.) As much as I did not want to, I had to reach out for financial assistance. Steve of Green Pets America promptly began working to ensure I received the help I so badly needed. I was greatly appreciative and most impressed with the _ way everything was handled.

LK: Reclaim numbers are 500 to 800 per year. That is low and sad.

What can I do to help you?

SG: Keep putting the word out there.

LK: Sharing information about adoptions and finding lost pets is a big thing.

How do you make money?

LK: The basic running of the shelter is county funded, but to cover extra animalrelated costs and projects, we fundraise and apply for grants. The puppy mill and hoarding situations we encountered in the past couple of years required us to apply for extra grants.

Are you making any big changes?

SG: We try to make changes every day.

We always want to keep learning and keep making progress in all areas – animal welfare, marketing, etc.

LK: We have made big changes over the past few years. We participated in the ASPCA Challenge and learned to use “fee-waive adoptions” and special promotions to help get animals adopted. We utilize a “paw-itforward” initiative whereby donations cover adoptions so people can adopt without paying the adoption fee.

What advice do you have for me?

SG: Keep learning. Keep up with your school-work. Be respectful. Reaching out and talking about animals is important. When kids see you helping, they realize it is possible to stand up for someone who is small and helpless and in need of a voice.

LK: You are making a big impact with what you do. The things you are doing and sharing with other kids is important. Keep on setting an example. Emphasize spay and neuter programs.

herokee Charter Academy, located on Sixes Road just off I-575 in Holly Springs, is a tuition-free public charter school. Charter schools are schools of choice, which means any student who resides in Cherokee County attending grades kindergarten through eighth is eligible to attend. Parents have said they are surprised there is no tuition, because many elements of the school feel more like a private than a public school. Students wear uniforms, parents actively volunteer, class sizes are a little smaller and students receive personal learning plans with one-on-one learning opportunities. As a charter school, the staff has more flexibility in how they

teach. While the school is still held to the same standards as a traditional public school, the learning environment is more flexible.

All of the school’s teachers are state-certified. Cherokee Charter administrators reinforce with each educator the important role he or she has on the student’s experience.

According to Phyllis Miller, her children learn best by doing, not just listening.

The hands-on field trips planned by the teachers made all the difference.

“The lessons they retained the best were the ones where they could see, touch, visit or experiment,” Miller said.

“My girls enjoyed numerous field trips in middle school, from testing water in a stream by the school, to climbing Kennesaw Mountain, studying geology at Stone Mountain and learning to camouflage themselves at the Blue Ridge Outdoor Education Center. They took their first visit to the symphony with their music teacher. They viewed art exhibits at The High Museum. These students have flexibility in their junior year to take AP courses and enter a dual enrollment program with local colleges.

The school recently received a $2,000 grant from the Towne Lake Optimist Club to purchase two hydroponic gardens, one for the elementary and one for the middle school STEM labs. Students will be able to explore a farm-to-table approach with the school cafeteria. If they can grow it, they’re going to eat it.

According to parent Addie Price, the overall family-like environment provided a turning-point in her child’s life.

“Cherokee Charter Academy not only changed my daughter’s life, I firmly believe that it saved her life,” Price said. “Prior to entering CCA, she was a shy little girl who had been bullied and picked on until she wouldn’t even raise her hand in class. She was entering the seventh grade reading on a second-grade level, but was brilliant in other subject areas. Thanks to the innovations and individualized learning plans, she soared to the top, becoming the first student government president of CCA and was recommended to start high school honors classes in her eighth-grade year.”

Living and Working at the Lake

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park attendant contractor staff and volunteer park hosts are the lifeblood of the Corps of Engineers’ parks and campground programs. Their generous assistance makes it possible to accommodate the thousands of people who use parks and campgrounds around the lake each spring, summer and fall. Currently, Allatoona Lake has several positions available for the 2017 recreation season.

The Corps at Allatoona has two types of park staff: paid park attendant contractors and volunteer park hosts.

Park Attendant Contractors In campgrounds, the park attendants are paid contractors, consisting of two couples, who work within that campground until the end of the season. These paid attendants must submit bids for a chosen campground. The contract is usually awarded to the low bidder, who must be bonded. A park attendant team consists of two persons, who must be mentally and physically capable, have excellent customer service skills, and be available to work four days on and four days off, including most weekends and holidays.

Because campgrounds at Allatoona Lake use the National Recreation Reservation System, attendants must be proficient with the computer. Attendants check campers in and out, monitor campground parking and other rules and regulations. All attendants must go through a vigorous week of training each year before the season starts.

Contractor park attendants also work a few of the busiest day-use areas on the lake. Anyone who has ever been to Galt’s Ferry Day Use Area or the Blockhouse Ramp recognize the work

and commitment these contractors put in at these overflowing areas. They must meet the same requirements as campground attendants, and oversee traffic control, annual pass sales, shelter reservations and fee compliance.

Pineapple Park owner Pacita Wilson is accustomed to designing homes for clients who contact her through her showroom and design center in downtown Woodstock.

The most recent project that’s kept her busy, however, started a little differently.

Pacita is the sole decorator for Children’s Charities Inc.’s 2017 Clarity Farm Showcase Home and Tour. It’s an idea she brought the charity’s cofounder Amanda White, because she wanted to do something great for the community.

“The whole project is Pacita’s brainchild,” Amanda said. “All of this is made possible by Pacita’s generosity, insight and vision. We are grateful and humbled for the opportunity to work together to bring something so amazing to Milton that will benefit children from five counties.”

Pacita is particularly fond of Children’s Charities because the nonprofit helps local children. The Clarity Farm Showcase Home, which is decorated in Pineapple Park’s trademark neutral palette, is a new home purchased by a couple who prefer to remain anonymous. They will move into the home the last night of the event. Items used to decorate will remain with the new owners, but some items can be ordered.

The 9,800-square-foot modern farmhouse-style home has a separate guest barn on 30-plus acres in Milton. During the tour, area artists will offer works for sale in areas outside the home and merchants will offer items for sale out of a food “pantry,” according to Amanda.

Money from ticket sales and a percentage of sales from items sold during the tour will help build an all-inclusive play park in Milton. The park will offer sensory centers for kids with autism, Braille on play units, a place to learn sign language and a music center.

Children’s Charities is working with the City of Milton on the park project and must raise $500,000 for its construction, Amanda said.

Showcase home participants will donate at least 25 percent of money made from sales, she said.

“The park will offer special features for children with specific disabilities, but all kids can use it,” said Amanda. “It is going to be a fantastic place to play.”

Pineapple Park offers interior and exterior decorating services, ranging from outdoor furniture and landscaping to floor-to-ceiling design inside the home. Pacita sources a vast number of vendors when selecting items for her store and the homes she decorates.

“We travel, and we rely on pickers who travel all over the world, to find unique items and new vendors for our shop,” said Pacita, who along with husband Ken has deep roots in home design.

What Does Your Home Insurance Policy Cover?

Not all home insurance policies are alike. Take a moment to see if you are adequately protected. Coverage amounts obviously vary, and so do coverage areas. Taking 10 minutes to scrutinize what your policy does (and does not) cover is a wise idea.

Homeowner policies routinely provide tornado, windstorm and hailstorm coverage. If a tornado, windstorm, or hail storm damages your home or yard, the insurer commonly will pay out in response to your claim, unless your residence somehow has failed to qualify for such coverage.1,2 How about hurricanes and floods? Here, basic coverage may not be enough. Most homeowner policies cover hurricane damage, but a hurricane frequently results in flooding. A flood is not usually a covered peril in a standard home insurance policy.2 In areas with serious flood risks, mortgage lenders often require borrowers to obtain flood insurance. Nationally, about a fifth of flood insurance claims are filed Taking 10 minutes in regions that have low to scrutinize what or moderate flood risks.

If you live by a normally your policy does calm creek, river, (and does not) reservoir, bay or beach, cover is a wise idea. you must decide if flood insurance is worth purchasing. You should consider it even if a creek, river or reservoir near you is dry most of the year; flash floods, for example, can wreak havoc in a desert community.3 How about earthquakes? If you live in quake country, you likely know that the standard homeowner policy will not

cover earthquake damage. Just like those who consider an optional flood policy, you must conduct your own informal cost-benefit analysis: Is the extra coverage worth the money?3 Many homeowners decide against buying hurricane, flood and earthquake insurance. They see this supplemental coverage the same way they see long-term care insurance – a lot of money spent for something they may never need. Their decision may come to haunt them, however. One temblor, one storm or one rising river may impact them more than they could imagine.

How about fire and lightning? The answer is yes, homeowner policies commonly provide coverage against lightning damage as well as damage from fire and smoke.

Explosions from gas leaks also may be covered, at least under most circumstances.1 What about sewer problems? Damage caused by leaking or ruptured septic tanks, sump pumps and sewer systems usually is not covered in a home insurance policy. You often can attach a rider to a policy to gain that kind of protection.3 How about theft? Coverage against larceny – the theft of real property – is common in any homeowner policy. Limits are set on coverage of art, antiques, collectibles and jewelry, but they can be raised. They may need to be raised because, in some instances, the payout may fall short of the full value of what was stolen. Open That Wall to Add More Space

If you live in a house that is full of small interior rooms, you might want to consider opening those walls to create more space.

A big question always: “Is that wall separating the rooms structural?”

Possibly, but a structural wall can be removed. You will need to replace the load-bearing characteristic of the wall, so consulting with an experienced contractor — and possibly an engineer — to make sure the work is done properly and safely is paramount. This is definitely not a do-it-yourself project, but don’t be scared to pursue it.

Here's a little idea of what is involved in such a project: Typically, two temporary walls are framed on each side of the wall to support the floor joists and transfer load while the wall is taken down. Then a new LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beam designed for your home’s specific structural needs is installed.

Columns are installed to support the LVL beam and carry the new load points of the beam. These point loads will be tied to the beam, transferring the load of whatever is above the wall to the foundation of your home. This structural load usually consists of the roof and/or second floor, if you have one.

Removing a wall like this requires that you know how much load is being supported over how much distance. This information is determined by an engineer or architect through an examination of the existing conditions. The amount of weight the beam must span and carry will determine if you can use an LVL, or a more expensive material, such as a steel beam. In most situations in our area, 12foot spans or less can be done economically using LVL materials.

The impact of this type of home improvement can change dramatically the way you use and live in your home. I encourage you to step out of the box and consider such a dramatic improvement to your home’s interior space. Remember, no guts, no glory!

EVERYDAY Sometimes superheros live in the hearts of those fighting battles bigger than themselves.

Everyday Angels would like to recap past features and update those of you who have prayed for and generously given in support of these strong families. In August 2016, we shared the story of Kyle Gebhardt, a fourth-grade student at Bascomb Elementary who had been diagnosed with nodular lymphocyte predominant hodgkin’s lymphoma (NLPHL), cancer of the lymph cells. Kyle has completed chemo treatments and returned to school. His hair has grown back and has had two haircuts. Kyle will continue his post-treatment regimen for the next two years until he can be considered cancer free. He is happy to be back in school with his friends and playing the sports he loves. Praises!

Our May feature, 44-year-old Ryan Bacon, had been diagnosed with a rare cancer of the bile duct. Bacon, a war veteran and former basketball coach, continues his treatment. “We were told last year that Ryan had a year to live and he has surpassed that year with progress, and we are thankful,” said Ryan’s wife Kim. “Ryan has lost 70 pounds and has some setbacks due to the aggressive treatments but the tumor in his liver has shrunk, so we consider that progress and positive news.” We continue to say prayers for Ryan and his doctors to defy the odds and rely upon our Great Physician for his complete healing.

Matthew Lane returned to Etowah High School on a part- time basis in March. In January, Matthew underwent 18 hours of surgery to remove cancer from his jaw, which was replaced with bone from his tibia. Thanks to our compassionate community, Everyday Angels was able to assist Matthew’s mom Ryan Bacon and his wife Kim. with their mortgage Top, Kyle Gebhardt.

and bills while she was out of work caring for him. We are in the process of purchasing the recommended alkaline water system for him, thanks to the assistance of Tony Perry and Patti Bachtel. Matthew has also been chosen by Sunshine for a Ranney Day to receive a room makeover.

Katelyn Fige was 11 entering sixth grade at Woodstock Middle School when we featured her story. She was diagnosed with stage 4 pineoblastoma, and underwent a 13-hour surgery removing 95 percent of the pear-size tumor deep inside her brain. After a long two-year journey, Katelyn is a survivor and continues to work hard to overcome the brutal effects of her aggressive treatment and surgeries.

She is unable to walk and is considered legally blind today but continues to work hard through occupational, physical, speech and feeding therapies. Her parents continue their search for a ranch home that would be better suited for Katelyn’s care. “Progress often comes with setbacks and she has had her fair share. Katelyn is our hero and we are grateful she is here!” said Elizabeth, Katelyn’s mom.

Blended Families: Equal May Not Seem Fair

Blended families often face unique challenges, as individuals who’ve been married before come together, bringing with them children from the previous relationships.

Studies show that four in 10 Americans are part of a blended family. While 70 percent report being satisfied with their step-family relationships, it isn’t unusual for feelings to remain stronger toward biological family members. That’s what complicates estate planning for blended families.

The quandary is: How do you plan for family members so they can provide for one another but still be confident that, in the end, their children or beneficiaries will get what’s legally entitled to them? The challenge with blended family planning is that, while the spouses trust each other to carry out their wishes, life often doesn’t work out the way they expect. After the death of one spouse, the relationship between the surviving spouse and the deceased spouse’s family tends to become more remote and diminished. As a result, over time the surviving spouse may forget or no longer wish to follow the planning as originally intended, or no longer deem it relevant based on new circumstances.

More importantly, even if the surviving spouse did wish to follow the original plan, circumstances may occur that put the assets in danger. The surviving spouse might need a nursing home, or might face a lawsuit, or remarry someone who could gain power of attorney, which would modify the planning after the incapacity of the original surviving spouse.

Many complications can arise, but here are four tips that should help:

Trusts. Generally, the most efficient and recommended way of avoiding the pitfalls of dividing up assets among a blended family is a trust. There are many types of incentives and limits that can be set up to meet your wishes fully.

Proper titling. Understand how titling assets, like a bank account, with just one child potentially could exclude your spouse or other children.

Specific bequests to your children. Making an outright gift to your children at your passing, especially by specifying what personal property with sentimental value goes to each person, can go a long way in avoiding arguments over who gets what.

Discuss your plans. Communication is key. Discussing your wishes in a non-argumentative way with your new spouse and family can go a long way in making sure your wishes are carried out the way you hope.

Annual ‘Tune Ups’ Crucial to Men’s Health

Too many men take better care of their vehicles than themselves. Oil changes, car washes and yearly tuneups are routine. But, unlike caring for their cars, men can be reluctant to schedule an annual checkup for themselves. Many worry about what they will discover.

In fact, one-third of men do not even have a primary care physician.

But don’t men deserve regular maintenance, too? An annual wellness check can be the difference between a vibrant life and terrible quality of life – or worse.

Men’s health is something I am very passionate about. As my dad ages, I feel comfortable knowing I have the medical background to address his issues. And, since I am aging myself, I am learning firsthand about topics that are important to my patients.

It may surprise some that a yearly wellness visit with a primary care physician is included in most insurance plans. It’s more effective to treat a health condition early rather than treating after it is out of control.

Like car maintenance, basic health screenings point to areas of concern to address before they cause damage in the long-run. Recommended tests vary from patient to patient, based on factors including age, sex, medical history and family history.

We’re looking at high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, depression and prostate cancer. And, we’re staying healthier with immunizations and boosters like flu shots.

In order to be proactive about my own health, I stay informed on recommendations for diet and exercise from specialty groups, and make sure to schedule one physical with lab work each year. Leptospirosis: Is Vaccination Necessary?

Leptospirosis is an infectious bacterial disease that is found worldwide. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning it affects both animals and humans. Leptospirosis causes many symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases. It most often results in kidney and/or liver damage, and may result in death. The bacteria are spread through the urine of infected animals, which can get into water or soil. The bacteria can survive for long periods of time. Infected animals may have no clinical symptoms and continue to excrete the bacteria into the environment for years.

The symptoms of leptospirosis vary widely in dogs. Common signs include: lethargy, depression, muscle tenderness, jaundice, anorexia, vomiting, fever, increased thirst and urination. Some infected dogs do not show any signs of illness, some have a mild and transient illness and recover spontaneously, while others develop severe illness and death.

Leptospirosis can be treated successfully with antibiotics. However, the disease can progress quickly and cause irreversible organ damage, resulting in rapid deterioration and death in spite of appropriate treatment.

Vaccination can help prevent infection in at-risk animals.

Leptospirosis is considered a non-core vaccine and is not always recommended for every dog. This vaccine tends to result in more vaccine reactions. Typical vaccine reactions are minor, such as pain at injection site, vomiting, facial swelling and hives. However, more severe anaphylactic reactions can occur. Pet reactions cannot be predicted.

This vaccine provides short-lived immunity and requires a yearly booster after the initial two-booster series. Be sure to talk with your veterinarian about which vaccine option is best suited to your pet’s specific needs and risks, based on your geographic location (including places where you travel), lifestyle (urban, rural, hunting) and medical history.

Vaping, Dripping and Oral Health

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling vapor produced by an electric device, called a vaporizer or e-cigarette. The vapor is created by heating e-liquids that can contain relatively harmless substances, such as water, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. However, in many cases, they also contain chemicals known to negatively impact the body, such as nicotine (highly addictive), diacetyl (lung disease), formaldehyde (respiratory irritant) and acetylpropionyl (lung and brain damage).

How common is vaping?

E-cigarette usage has exploded in recent years, growing from a $20 million industry in 2008 to more than $2.9 billion in 2016.

Even more concerning is that studies show a huge increase in vaping among middle and high school students. For example, the number of high schoolers who smoke e-cigarettes increased from 1.5 percent in 2011 to 16 percent in 2015.

Is vaping harmful?

Unfortunately, there is far less research available regarding the impact of vaping on the body as compared with smoking traditional cigarettes. However, we do know a few things. First, anytime a person introduces chemicals into his or her body, there is a risk. Harm can be done by the delivery method, such as burns to oral tissue, or from dangerous chemicals such as those noted above.

Second, it is common for teens to alter vaping devices and processes, which further increase the associated dangers. For example, a relatively new method of vaping called dripping is becoming more popular. It involves applying the e-liquid directly to the e-cigarette coils for the purpose of enhancing flavor or being able to produce larger clouds (a.k.a. cloud chasing).

What can you do?

First, don’t assume your child would not or has not already tried vaping. Research typically shows that far fewer parents believe their children are participating in risky activities than the number who are actually doing so. Second, show a genuine concern about the well-being of your teen. Communication is key.

Share information about the risks associated with vaping. Simply texting an article about the topic to your child can be an effective method of showing you care, as well as expressing your desire to provide them with good information. Finally, if you feel a third person would help deliver the message, ask your child’s doctor or dentist to review the dangers of vaping or smoking with them.

How many mailers do you receive each day for hearing devices? If you think hearing devices are being marketed more these days, you are correct. With “hearing stores” popping up in every other strip mall, warehouse clubs, magazine ads and the internet, the confusion for those in need of assistance is increasing at the same rate.

Myth: “I hear what I need to hear and get along fine.”

Fact: You only hear what your hearing capacity permits.

Reality of what is actually being said is now altered for a person with hearing loss. If you can’t hear it - how do you know you missed it?

People with untreated hearing loss experience a decreased quality of life. It has been proven to cause varied levels of depression, anxiety, paranoia and poor social relationships. According to The Hearing Health Foundation, even those with mild hearing loss are twice as likely to develop dementia.

Myth: “My insurance doesn’t cover hearing care, and I can’t afford to pay out of pocket.”

Fact: Credentialed audiologists can contract with the major insurance companies. Diagnostic hearing testing is typically covered once a year, and more plans are starting to include hearing aid benefits. Financing programs that offer loans to help cover the upfront cost of hearing aids may be worth considering.

Myth: I will save money if I buy online or at my warehouse club.

Cancer Patients Should Have a Choice

In the end, I was the only member on this particular committee who wanted to see the bill move on to the next step.

The committee voted to table the bill and the debate, for this day, ended.

Some time ago, a few guys in suits with titles like representative and senator got together and arbitrarily set the cap of patients from Georgia for this cancer treatment center to 35 percent. The decision made that day has had an impact on the lives and health care choices of countless Georgians.

It isn’t right, just or fair that some people gathered under a gold-domed building far away preordained the health care choices for people like this. I believe the cancer patient should be able to go to whatever facility he or she wants without the law getting in the way. It is just another reason why I am in this fight to limit the size and scope of government and get it out of your life as much as possible.

Many times, goals may include losing weight. Lower weight decreases the risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart disease. It is not a realistic goal to lose 20 pounds in a week, but losing realistic amounts of weight a little bit at a time is achievable. Long-term health goals are easier to accomplish if they are broken down into smaller, more reasonable objectives.

In addition to having the reward of a healthier life, patients are being rewarded for going to wellness checks in other ways. Many companies have health initiatives and give financial benefits to employees who take the time to talk about their health with their healthcare provider.

My plea to the men in this community is to think about your vehicle. You would not let it get to 30,000 miles without a tuneup. Now, what about you? Have you gone a year, maybe two or three, without your basic maintenance? Get your well checkup, too. One appointment on just one day of the year can keep you running like a well-oiled machine, or, if needed, start you on the journey to become one. And, it will keep you running much longer than your car.

Dead Things Coming Alive

This year, Easter falls on April 16.

The Christian faith centers around this celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Like the miracle Jesus performed in John 11 calling a dead man, Lazarus, out of the grave, the resurrection of Jesus proved that God has the power to bring dead things back to life.

Even if you aren’t a Christian, you can see a similar process every spring when dormant plants and trees sprout new life after a season of “death.” The trees in my backyard are proof of this reality.

We watch the dying each fall and winter as leaves cover the ground, flowers close their petals, and the vibrant colors are replaced by drab brown and gray.

I wonder, though, how many of us have had hopes and dreams that were as vibrant as the spring and summer flowers? Failure wasn’t an option and the colors of life seemed to be everywhere we looked. But somewhere along the way, our plans stalled, our marriage became hard, and our dreams grew dim. What used to be a promising career path has

derailed to the point that you’ve laid aside hopes of advancement and are content just to draw a paycheck.

What started as love at first sight has become someone you can’t stand the sight of.

My prayer for you this Easter season is that you would find new life in the places that seem dead. That you would pick up old hobbies and find the same joy you used to feel.

That you would go out on dates that feel like first dates all over again. And that you would find joy in your life that hasn’t been there in a while.

Easter has become eggs, bunnies, pastels and marshmallow birds. However, Easter is really about finding hope in even hopeless situations!

Buses Among Safest Form of Transportation

In January, the U.S. Government Accountability Office released the report “School Bus Safety: Crash Data Trends and Federal and State Requirements” after reviewing nationwide data from 2000-14.

School buses transport more than 26 million students daily to and from school and other activities nationwide. While crashes of any kind involving school buses concern all of us, this report clearly indicates that school buses — carrying precious cargo — are very safe.

A review of the data shows only .003 percent of the 34,835 total fatal crashes involved a school bus. Bus driver training and bus maintenance and equipment inspections were considered key factors in the analysis.

Federal and state laws set requirements for school bus equipment, inspections and driver licensing. Also school districts have policies, procedures and guidelines that address hiring standards for drivers, training and operations.

The Cherokee County School District (CCSD) takes pride in its transportation department, which maintains more than 386 school buses transporting more than 28,000 students daily over 20,000 miles covering 1,500 routes.

Hiring people who care is a vital part of our district’s success. Many of the drivers employed by CCSD have long

tenures, and the training provided by the transportation department is considered among the best in the state -CCSD requirements far exceed state minimums. Many of CCSD’s drivers have competed in the annual bus rodeos, which display driving skills and knowledge, and our drivers have advanced to state and national competitions.

The CCSD transportation department consistently receives high marks for safety and reliability from the Georgia State Patrol and the Department of Public Safety during annual inspections. In 2015, the department earned the prestigious National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Blue Seal of Excellence, becoming one of the first school districts in Georgia to achieve this level of certification.

Remember that accidents generally involve more than one vehicle. Be conscious of the other motor vehicles around you. If you see a school bus, pay more attention than you normally would and, as always, stop when the flashing lights and stop signs are activated.

Seniors Win Welding Scholarships Students from Cherokee High School’s welding program recently competed at the National High School Senior Welding Competition hosted by Tulsa Welding School in Jacksonville, Fla. Grant Blalock, Eric Cochran, Jack Elwell, Ed Herrera, Jacob Little and Damon Sheffield competed against 200 students from across the country.

Herrera placed second and won a $9,000 scholarship and championship buckle, along with other prizes that included welding equipment, a welding hood and other tools. Little placed 12th and was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, as well as a new welding hood and tools.

Each of the participating students earned a $500 award.

“I am super proud of these students,” teacher Carter Woodall said. “These students put out 110 percent effort every day to Ed Herrera, pictured with his father, kneeling in front, learn these skills, and this shows how it can pay off.” and Tulsa Welding School representatives.

Woodstock High School recently held a Poetry Out Loud student competition, with published poets serving as judges.

Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation competition for high school students that takes Competition winner Josh place in schools across the Roberson and runner-up country. The goal is to teach Deonna Francois. students about poetry and inspire them to pursue creative outlets.

Senior Josh Roberson won the school’s competition with his recitation of “The Song of the Smoke” by W.E.B. Du Bois. Sophomore Deonna Francois was runner-up for her rendition of “Hip-Hop Ghazal” by Patricia Smith.

Where to Be If You Are … um … Different

Ah, the teenage life, fond memories of breakups, gossip and cliques. Don’t we all wish we could go back? I don’t know about you, but the drama of high school every year was at its peak around prom time.

So why not celebrate that? OK, still not into the gossip or cliques? Welcome to Zombie Prom. From “Night of the Living Dead” to “World War Z,” the fascination with zombies surfaces in every generation. Maybe the roots in folklore make them seem a bit more plausible, horrible and utterly fascinating.

Enjoy all things zombie? This would be the prom for you.

But even more so, “Zombie Prom” is a (terribly campy) musical, and the “promposals” in this show bring their “A” Game. Try breaking up, riding your motorcycle into the local nuclear power plant, resurrecting yourself as a zombie, and then asking the girl who broke up with you to prom. Of course, then you have to deal with the principal, who won’t allow “zombie scum” to attend the prom … but that’s later in the story.

My point? Zombies make everything cool, even high school gossip and breakups. But what is particularly great about this production is that it is being produced exclusively by our teens.

They get to make fun of all of the teen drama in high schools through a comedic-rock-corny-zombie musical. Who wouldn’t want to go?

The other almost-as-cool-as-zombie fact is that the teens aren’t just learning how to put on a show (which by the way … the show is fantastic). They are learning how it impacts the community, and how they can be involved in benefiting the community.

In fact, the April Friday Night Live in Downtown Woodstock is themed Zombie Prom and all of our teens are helping to make it happen. They get to see firsthand how something like a show can contribute to the vibrancy in the community.

So to recap: • At our Zombie Prom, everyone (even you “different” folk) is invited.

• Teens are making fun of high school drama through a musical to encourage inclusion and tolerance (NOT just a teen issue).

• Teens are actively contributing to the betterment of our community.

• It’s 2017 and zombies are still cool.
