Arnprior mayor, reeve candidates square off over growth and taxes DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
SILO FALLS A large silo full of corn silage at the Dean farm east of Arnprior in Galetta toppled on a barn Monday. It was a devastating loss for the farm family. 12
DEATH IN THE WOODS A convoy of police vehicles gets ready to leave Calabogie Saturday after a woman’s body was found near Mountain Chute. The next day a man’s body was found in the same area. It appears the elderly couple got stuck while back-roading and died before being found. 14
Growth and tax increases were the recurring themes as Arnprior mayoral and reeve candidates made their case before a standing room of some 350 people at the Nick Smith Centre Sept. 29. Mayoral candidates Nancy Black, Ted Kelly, David Reid, Jim Silye and Doug Smith joined reeve candidates Alex Winter, Eric Burton, Walter Stack and Tom Peckett to answer questions from the public on topics ranging from four-year vision to the OPP contract and seniors’ housing. But many questions came back to growing residential, industrial and commercial developments. Some candidates indicated Arnprior is playing catch-up and must to move quickly to spur growth. Others said growth needs to be balanced. Black led off the evening by saying, in her introductory remarks, that the town “didn’t turn down” the boxstore retail proposal and if it comes back council will help accelerate growth in an “orderly way.” “It is essential that controls be managed,” she said. Kelly called himself a businessman and consultant who analyzes public and private sector problems then offers solutions. He is also a real estate agent who would like Arnprior to become a “bedroom community of Ottawa.” He said boxstores and new industry will solve homeowners worst problem: high taxes. Reid said a “customer-focus” and business mentality is needed at town hall. He wants to encourage growth by building a community square and boardwalk to link the downtown core with the waterfront. CAR CRUSHING ACTION AT FALL BRAWL The Arnprior Agricultural Society’s inaugural Fall Brawl demolition derby is being deemed a success with an estimated 1,500 people attending. Above, a red flag goes up as Corey Washburn gets a unique airborne view of the ring as his car is rammed by competitors in the 17-car four-cylinder class. For more on the derby, see Page 20.
