An Arnprior woman is suing Calabogie Peaks Resort for millions of dollars after the tube she was riding slammed into a metal pole two years ago.

According to the Metro Ottawa newspaper, Kessie Hamilton was riding with her little girl when the tube “unexpectedly slid sideways” on March 14, 2014, at about 7 p.m.

An eyewitness who asked to remain anonymous told Metroland Media the pole, unlike others near the foot of the hill, was not wrapped in gymnastic-like padding.

The poles are about 15 cm (six inches) in diameter, and could cause tremendous damage.

“It was serious. It was really serious,” the source said.

“She couldn’t get up.”

Many children were crying and after what seemed like a long time paramedics came out, said the source.

Only young people appeared to be working that night, according to the source, no managers.

The 46-year-old mother of three children – ages 10, 8, and 5 at the time – was transported to hospital in Renfrew then to Ottawa Civic Hospital’s ICU, where she remained for six weeks with catastrophic injuries, including a brain injury that kept her in a rehabilitation facility for a year, according to court documents obtained by Metro.

Hamilton is now paralyzed on the left side of her body and needs a wheelchair for mobility.

She also suffers from fatigue, chronic pain, speech impairment, difficulty speaking loudly, and impulsivity that requires attendant care.

Jennifer Murphy is new warden of the County of Renfrew COUNTY OF RENFREW

Bonnechere Valley Township Mayor Jennifer Murphy formally took the oath of office at the Dec. 10 session of County Council and assumes the Office of the Warden of the County of Renfrew for a one-year term.

Warden Murphy, who was acclaimed, takes over from Past-Warden Peter Emon who held the position for four terms. Murphy was nominated by fellow Coun. and Past-Warden Janice Visneskie Moore, with Coun. Robert Kingsbury as seconder.

Upon assuming the chain of office for the County of Renfrew, Warden Murphy presented a brief outline of some of her goals and objectives for 2017 in an inaugural address to council and guests.

“As a council we will make sure provincial and federal government ministries keep hearing our perspective on our key issues like the Endangered Species Act, planning, funding transfers, Highway 417, and countless others.”

Warden Murphy also referenced a new initia-

tive that she would like to see council consider.

“We will explore new and innovative ways to consider options like shared services, new funding opportunities, and increased economic development to assuage these pressures.

“One of the options we will consider to increase efficiencies and decrease economic pressures on ratepayers is to review the document from 1997 regarding the role and responsibilities of upper-tier and lower-tier services. Perhaps changes could be considered with regards to shared services leading to benefits to all residents of the county,” she said.

Warden Murphy was born and raised in Toronto and she moved to Eganville in February 2000 because she loved the area.

Her father’s family is from Osceola area and she spent many weekends and most vacations at the homestead prior to moving.

Murphy and her husband Dave opened Murphy’s Auto Service in Renfrew in January 2001.

Murphy is a proud stepmother to two beautiful daughters, Nicole and Laura.

Renfrew County telephone system restored after outage On Tuesday, Dec. 20, areas of the County of Renfrew and City of Pembroke experienced a prolonged and complete interruption of Bell Canada telephone service shortly after 2:30 p.m.

As a result of this Bell Canada telephone system failure, 911 emergency telephone access was interrupted.

Paramedic, police and fire services remained available to the public at all times. Contingency plans were immediately implemented and call taking functions were transferred to centres outside of the county.

As of 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 21, Bell Canada had notified the County of Renfrew Emergency Ser-

vices Department that telephone service had been restored throughout the County and City of Pembroke.

“I would like to thank our paramedic service, communications staff and public safety partners for ensuring a seamless provision of service to the community,” said Warden Jennifer Murphy.

“The County of Renfrew will be following up with Bell Canada representatives to review the conditions that resulted in this interruption of our critical infrastructure and what actions they will undertake to prevent this from occurring again in the future,” said Jim Hutton, chief administrative officer for the County of Renfrew.

Active transportation sees a leap forward on county roads COUNTY OF RENFREW

In 2016 the County of Renfrew benefitted from favourable pricing for hot mix paving products used in the roadwork portion of the capital works program.

As a result, the county’s public works and engineering department was able to extend a number of projects to take advantage of the tender prices, thereby enabling the advancement of some projects that otherwise would have been undertaken in 2017 and beyond.

The extended projects enabled the county to complete an additional 11.6 kilometres of roadwork beyond their planned projects.

Further, the projects that were extended included an additional 9.8 km of paved shoulders to support active transportation along the county’s roadways.

Originally, the county had budgeted for 5.8km of hardened shoulders as part of their continuing commitment to add active transpor-

tation features to roads as budgets and project parameters allowed.

“By adding 15.6 km of hardened shoulders this year, the County of Renfrew has moved forward in both providing residents with infrastructure benefitting our community in terms of active living, and attracting an ever growing and diversifying tourism community,” said chair of the County of Renfrew operations committee, Coun. Michael Donohue.

“The investment in hardened shoulders delivers a message of ‘share the road’, while increasing the longevity of the roadway.

Paved shoulders decrease maintenance requirements by preventing the breakup of the road edge by large vehicles.”

It is also to be noted that even with the extended project limits, the continued changes in asphalt cement prices throughout the year, from the date of tendering to the date of construction, resulted in a further cost saving to the county’s roadwork program of approximately $306,700.

The claim, filed last March, says the former production management support person at GE Hitachi can no longer work.

The family is claiming $25.75 million in damages, including Hamilton’s cost of care, lost income and the family’s pain and suffering.

The resort denies any responsibility for Hamilton’s injuries and said that the park was reasonably safe. The statement of defence also notes that a waiver is printed on the back of every lift ticket and posted around the park.

Calabogie Peaks also suggests that Hamilton didn’t follow park instructions, wasn’t wearing a helmet and went tubing fully aware that there

was a risk involved.

Metroland Media’s source said the majority of adults don’t wear helmets while tubing, just the kids do. And that free tubing passes were handed out that the night, after the facility shut down following the accident, but that tubing never returned to the resort.

Statements of claim and defence include allegations not proven in court. A trial date has been set for January 7, 2019.

Kevin and Kessie Hamilton could not be reached for comment before publication. Neither could Paul and Liz Murphy, owners of Calabogie Peaks.

A Pembroke-area man has been fined $1,000 under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act for a hunting offence.

Brad Wasmund pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting an antlerless deer without a valid licence.

Court heard that on Nov. 14, Wasmund was contacted by a conservation officer off Round Lake Road in Renfrew County.

During an inspection, the officer spotted a camouflage backpack lying in the leaves behind Wasmund’s hunting camp.

Upon questioning, it was determined that a butchered antlerless deer was concealed in the pack.

Wasmund admitted to accidentally shooting and harvesting the deer the previous day

without the required licence.

The deer was forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Barry J. Moran heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, on Dec. 19.

The ministry reminds hunters that a valid hunting licence is required to hunt wild game and that the appropriate seal must be attached to an animal immediately after it is harvested.

Facility Renewal Update

Two years ago, ARH developed a multi-year, $5.5M facility renewal plan. ARH has been working diligently to accomplish the identified projects that were highlighted in the plan.

Most recently, over the summer, the roofs at the hospital were replaced on the majority of the building, including the historic building that currently houses administration.

Before Christmas, another key component of the plan was completed with the installation of new boilers.

These hot-water boilers cost approximately $500 000 and take care of heating the air and water for the hospital. The old boilers were operating at 60-65% efficiency, while the new boilers run at 90-95% efficiency.

These efficiencies will result in savings of a minimum of $35 000 per year. They will also reduce the facility’s Facility Manager John Gruno with Project Manager Rick carbon footprint given that these hot-water boilers run on natural gas, with propane as a backup.

Another plus of the boiler project is that the new boilers are housed outside in a portable structure. This creates the advantage that internal space will not be impacted by non-clinical functions. The expected life cycle of these new boilers is 30 years.

The Town of Renfrew is set to have a new presence on the World Wide Web. The municipality is planning on launching its new website on Jan. 1, 2017.

During the Dec. 13 council meeting elected officials got a sneak peak at the new site and Mayor Don Eady thinks it looks great.

“Our old website was so badly outdated, it wasn’t user-friendly. Today’s society if you want your municipalities to get ahead, the one big tool, especially for people from out of town, want to use is the website,” said Eady.

“If you are a perspective business exploring to move into Renfrew, the first thing they will do is go on the website.

So it was time that we got it up to date and make it modern, easy to use and user friendly and I am really excited about it.”

In the 2016 budget the town included an expenditure of $20,000 for website redevelopment/redesign with the financing coming from unallocated reserves. On Sept. 27 council awarded the professional services for the redevelopment to Running Tide Inc. for $19,950.

During the presentation Kim Leach, the town’s economic officer walked through the different sections of the page and called the new platform very user-friendly.

Each department has its own section and staff took a different approach to the development of the site.

“We had to take the corporate hat off and look at what residents are looking for,” said Leach.

“We tried to make it as user-friendly as possible.”

Some of the different sections are: government, town hall, treasurer, fire department, visit here, recreation and more.

They have also added a business section.

“This is new, we didn’t have this section before,” said Leach. “It’s an attraction section. We are working to get the economic development strategic plan up there.”

The town has also partnered with the Renfrew Industrial Commission to use their business directory.

The new website is also mobile friendly and they have many more ideas for the future including the possibility of live broadcasting in the next couple of years.

With the New Year comes the announcement of a new parade in Arnprior.

Like all communities in Canada, in 2017 the town is celebrating the 150th anniversary of confederation.

Municipal officials are confident 150 events will take place across Arnprior over the coming year – from church lunches to White Pine Festival to the Christmas parade – all offering to stamp participants’ “passport” provided by town hall.

They can add one more to the list.

Another parade. For the first time in recent memory, Anprior will host an Easter parade this April.

Recreation director Glenn Arthur made the announcement to council at a recent regular meeting.

“To my knowledge it would be the first Easter parade ever held in Arnprior,” Arthur said.

The parade will be similar to the Christmas parade with the Easter bunny taking the place of Santa Claus.

The plan is for 20 floats, two marching bands, and three dance schools.

They will travel from Kenwood Centre to William Street to John Street, down John to Ottawa Street, over to Harrington Street then Madawaska Street, Edward Street, and back to Kenwood.

The Easter bunny’s float will separate from the parade at Ottawa Street and continue to Robert Simpson Park. The fun will culminate with a barbecue party and egg hunt at Robert Simpson Park. “(A) large Easter egg hunt to follow for the children complete with

pictures with the Easter bunny,” reads Arthur’s report to council.

Live music might happen, but weather tends to be dicey near early spring.

Easter falls on April 16, but the parade is planned for Saturday, April 8.

Vendors and volunteers are welcome.

The event is spearheaded by Darren Wood, who runs the spring fishing derby. “He’s a volunteer with some good ideas,” Arthur said.

Council was receptive of the idea.

“We are looking for events for our 150th anniversary,” Mayor David Reid said.

“I think this would be a nice fit for our slate of events.”

It was noted that the second and final year of downtown revitalization roadwork will be take place, but it is not likely to start before the parade.

Family health team brings back budget bites The Arnprior and District Family Health Team is at it again. Thanks to generous donations on behalf of Jack and Faith’s No Frills and the community’s enthusiasm for the pilot class this past October, the ‘Budget Bites’ walletfriendly cooking class will be back in the new year.

“The newest iteration of the class, occurring on Jan.

“What is fantastic in this community is the large contributions that were certainly on display here tonight, and the small contributions, the little things matter and that’s what makes a community,” said Donohue, after the ceremony.

“People mistake the corporation of the township for the actual township. The corporation - that’s when we carry out the business.

“The actual community are the people who have joined us here this evening and we have just a small role to play in the community and these folks are what truly make it a community.”

Braedyn Butler was the youngest of the group at seven years old; he started a fundraiser to raise money after the devastating fires in Fort McMurray.

He ended up raising $13 more than his original goal of $1,000.

“It was awesome,” said Butler on the award.

“It was fun being up there.”

His mother Jordi was very proud of him.

“He worked really hard and we were surprised when they called us,” she said.

Sean Enright, from Enright Farms was rec-

ognized as his bull EF Titan 545 was named the grand champion for Black Angus at the Canadian Western Agribition in Saskatchewan in November.

“This is an enormous feat,” said Donohue.

“Being number one in the country is an outstanding achievement and gives us significant exposure for our community.”

Enright said it was pretty nice to be recognized.

“There are a lot people more deserving than I am,” said Enright. “It is pretty special.”

As to the honour for his bull he admits its something they always try for.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Enright.

“It’s something more for the Ottawa Valley, it shows we can compete out West.”

Also recognized were: Molly Helferty who had also received the Karl Fick Memorial Scholarship for vocals, she recently graduated high school with an average of 96.83 per cent and is now studying at Queen’s University; Terry and Evelyn McHale for their service to the community at the Douglas Tavern, including many fundraisers for the local hospitals; Maureen Hicks and Marie Schruder who won the BMO achievement award for growth and expansion; Meryl Ritz (55 years of service), Pauline Hughes (40 years of service) and Irene Rekowski (40 years of service) for their decades of service to the Catholic Women’s League; Joan Reid, Karen Pender and Joanne McDonald for their service to the Women’s Institute; Carly May, Theresa Panke and Rachel Enright for their work with the Opeongo High School concert band the Jazzcats.

Three Horton Township recreation volunteers were recognized for their outstanding efforts at the Dec. 20 council meeting.

Mayor Robert Kingsbury formally presented the Senior of Year award to Val Miller and the awards for Volunteers of the Year went to Tina Hunt and Danielle McGregor.

Miller has been volunteering on the recreation committee for more than 10 years and was humbled by the award.

“I am very honoured,” said Miller.

As to what she is most proud of over the years one thing comes to mind: fundraising.

“We kind of decided we would take responsibility of raising funds for the rink roof,” said Miller. “So far we have succeeded with only four years left, so that is pretty good for a small township to pay for the rink roof.”

Kingsbury said Miller was a very deserving recipient.

“She has contributed so much of her time over the years to help us in recreation. She started with almost a committee of one and has built it up to what it is now,” said Kingsbury. “I think this goes to say even though you are getting up there in age you can still contribute to the municipality and we look forward for other ones coming forward with ideas.”

Miller also announced this was her last meeting sitting on the recreation committee and they are currently seeking other volunteers to sit on the volunteer board.

Hunt and McGregor were the kicking force behind the township’s new soccer league this past summer. They have also spearheaded a number of fundraising initiatives to help pay for the new field located behind the community centre.

Both were so humbled at receiving the award they were at a loss for words..

“It feels really great,” said Hunt. “It was a lot of hard work and it paid off. Iit was for the kids and it was a lot of fun.”

“I really appreciate them recognizing all the hard work we did,” added McGregor. “It was a lot of work, and a lot of fun and I think it turned out really great and in the end the kids had a lot of fun.”

McGregor thinks things are coming along really well for next year.

Also during the meeting council received an update on the new field. Currently there are five drainage trenches dug and it is hoped that the field will be stripped and seeded early in the Spring.

Rethink your drinking It’s a message that has special meaning during the holiday season, but can also apply to any time of year: it’s important to drink responsibly.

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is once again promoting its Rethink Your Drinking campaign, which they have been rolling out since October 2014.

It’s geared at helping change the way people view and use alcohol through information on standard drink sizes, how alcohol affects men and women differently, as well as the timing of drinks and when zero alcohol is the limit.

As of Dec. 15, the health unit partnered with other health units across the province to promote these messages.

While it shouldn’t need to be said, those driving a vehicle or using machinery, taking medication that may interact with alcohol, pregnant or planning to get pregnant, and those responsible for the safety of others should not drink.

Did you know that a standard drink equals either 12 ounces of beer, cider or a cooler; a 1.5-ounce shot of 40 per cent hard liquor such as vodka, rum, whisky or gin), or a five-ounce glass of 12 per cent wine? It’s important to be mindful that higher percentage beer and wines count as more than one standard drink.

We all know the short-term risks of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol: they can lead to violence, risky sexual behaviour, alcohol poisoning and accidental injuries. Longer term effects could lead to heart problems, stroke, liver disease, cancer and stomach issues.

Know your limits and don’t exceed them.

Just recently, a college student in Britain lost his life after a night of excessive drinking as part of a sorority pledge.

Over the holidays, we all enjoy taking part in merriment and attending parties and social functions, but a little knowledge can make a world of difference.

Counting birds isn’t always easy Annual Christmas Bird Count currently underway The Christmas Bird Count season is finally here!

For those unfamiliar with them, Christmas Counts are day-long, volunteer-run censuses that take place annually between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5.

Each covers an area defined by a circle with a 7.5-mile radius; participants are assigned specific portions in which they tally all birds they encounter.

Christmas Bird Counts arose in 1900 as a protest to the annual Christmas Side Hunt, an event in which groups shot everything they encountered.

At day’s end the victims were tallied and the hunters who killed the most were declared winners.

Frank Chapman initiated the Christmas Bird Census as an alternative, and 25 counts were held that year.

Today more than 2,300 censuses take place in North America.

I’ve taken part in CBCs for more than 50 years, and in earlier days participated in as many as five each year. I now participate in three: Kingston, Pakenham-Arnprior, and Algonquin Park.

On Dec. 18, the Kingston CBC proved to be a real test of stamina. At 5:15 a.m. freezing drizzle made the trip to my car a challenge.

Those conditions caused Rory MacKay and fellow members of our group to cancel.

So I went alone, catching the 6:15 a.m. ferry to Wolfe Island where I was to survey the southeastern part of the island. At 6:40 the ferry landed to a downpour of rain.

The rain made the unsalted roads extra slippery but thankfully my car was all-wheel drive and bore new snow tires. Undaunted, I drove on.

My first stop was a woodlot with a resident Eastern Screech-Owl. The rain lessened and I hoped it would reply

to my imitations.

But just when I began to call, two snowplows arrived and the ensuing cacophony made it impossible to hear anything.

Frustrated, I left for Horne’s Ferry on the St. Lawrence River, arriving just before dawn.

Light rain was falling and mist cloaked much of the water but I could make out ghostly forms of ducks flying by.

Those flying close to the water were Long-tailed Ducks; higher in the mist were Red-breasted Mergansers.

Some flocks, visible for mere seconds, contained over a hundred birds and so best estimates were all I could do.

A distant flock of Snow Geese was spotted; 90 were recorded.

Many thousands of Canada Geese were present but as it was impossible to know if the same birds were being seen twice so I estimated 3,000.

Less common birds were much easier to tally; three Double-crested Cormorants, two Canvasbacks, and a single Swamp Sparrow didn’t require a calculator.

By mid morning the rain turned to windblown ice pellets that stung my eyes and fouled my binoculars. Then snow began to fall.

Currently there are two different committee member opportunities: The Renfrew and Area Home Support and recreation committee, which is seeking three new members. We are also seeking volunteers who would like to champion existing or new programming for youth in our area. The municipality offers many events and programs that would not be possible without the support and dedication of volunteers. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers that form the recreation committee.

We realize life is busy, time is precious and that is why we are seeking event champions as opposed to attending regular committee meetings as a committee member. We need your ideas, your skills, your connections. Our goal in 2017 is to bring more events to Horton, involve our youth and showcase our wonderful facilities at the Horton Community Centre. There are sports/recreation grant opportunities we may be able to access but we need to hear from you.

Here are some examples of volunteer opportunities: • Winter festival: Looking for new events for youth; need event champions-not required to join a committee.

If you have an idea, a few people to help, we want to hear from you.

• Outside rink: We are seeking volunteers on weekends and one night a week to volunteer at the rink. Winter or summer; if you have a fun activity you’d like to champion, give us a call • Winter fun - February: If you know someone that wants to organize a pizza/movie night or a couple structured play inside or outside activities • March Break: If you’d be interested in championing an afternoon for our youth(inside or outside activities) by transferring some of your skills or expertise, we can build a great program; If you have contacts that might want to make a presentation to our youth.

• Canada Day: If you have a great idea for a new event for youth or fundraising idea we are looking to expand our Canada Day celebrations.

Complaints via social media and elsewhere related to snow removal on town roads and sidewalks were addressed by Arnprior council at a recent meeting.

Chief Administrative Officer Michael Wildman explained that the province has municipalities follow a particular formula, and indicated that Arnprior does as good a job at snow removal as any town in Ontario.

“We meet or exceed provincial standards,” Wildman said.

The first roads to be cleared are county roads such as Daniel Street and Madawaska Boulevard.

Cleaning crews then move to those in the downtown core, to and from key areas such as the hospital and schools.

Time-wise, when a county road accumulates five centimetres or more, it must be cleared within six hours.

Snow accumulation and time to react increase after that.

The 55 kilometres of roads in the municipality is done by three snowplows, two loaders, and a half ton truck.

Drivers must take rest periods at certain times.

Downtown sidewalks will see enough done to clear a path, enough to walk through, basically, then return the next night to clear onto the roads.

When there are back to back storms, as the town has seen these season, snow will not be completely taken away for at least a day.

“This comes up every year and it’s frustrating, yes,” Mayor David Reid said.

“Overall staff, with the resources they have, do an excellent job.”

The snow piling has not changed.

If a road or sidewalk is missed, as happens from time to time Reid said, he encourages residents to call town hall.

But again, a snowstorm will not be completely removed until the following 24 hours.

Pakenham residents now won’t have to travel far to get their prescriptions filled.

Remedy’sRx officially opened its doors Dec. 19 at 2547 County Road 29 in Pakenham. Mississippi Mills Mayor Shaun McLaughlin was on hand to help cut the ribbon and welcome the new business to the municipality.

“This (pharmacy) will be especially useful for the seniors in our community,” he noted, adding that the Whole Medicine Wellness Centre across the street will benefit.

“They can write prescriptions, but they couldn’t be filled here.

With the new pharmacy, the two businesses can benefit and feed off each other.”

The pharmacy offers a full prescription service, including easy transfers from other drug stores, medication reviews, over the counter medications, assisted living devices for seniors and home health care supplies, as well as a small gift area. According to the Remedy’sRx website (www.remedys. ca), which operates pharmacies across the country, “We are the local drug store, offering a variety of services while focusing on individualized care.

We are committed to achieving the best outcome for each of our patients.”

“Some of our clients had come in and chatted about not having a pharmacy in Pakenham,” Ibrahim said. “We came to talk to the mayor... and were trying to search to find the right place on the main street.” “...I said we have a perfectly good building that’s available...eight months later, here we are,” McLaughlin remarked.

Ibrahim said the pharmacy will cut down the 15 to 20-minute travel time for clients, who would traditionally have to make the drive to nearby Arnprior or Almonte. The high visibility

EOWC, EORN applaud CRTC broadband ruling Two local municipal associations are pleased with a new announcement on broadband Internet.

“On behalf of all rural residents across Eastern Ontario and those who travel to and from our region we applaud yesterday’s ruling by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) making access to mobile broadband and high speed Internet services an essential service,” said Peter Emon, chair of the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC).

“It is what we had hoped they would do,” said Dave Burton, chair of the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN).

“Together both of our organizations have been working hard over these past eight years to close the gaps in Internet services across the whole of our region,” he added.

“When we made our submissions to the commission last April EORN urged them help ensure that rural people and rural businesses get the same type of access to high speed internet services that our urban neighbours enjoy,” said Burton.

“We asked that the commission also develop an ongoing fund to help organizations like ours to continue to work with the telecommunications industry and that is exactly what they have done,” said Burton.

EORN estimates that about onesixth of areas in rural Eastern Ontario where there are homes, busi-

nesses or major roads, is a cellular dead zone.

This lack of access to mobile calling and data is a risk to the region’s economic vitality, quality of life and public safety.

EORN, which helped expand high-speed Internet access in the region, is now seeking federal and provincial support for a public-private initiative valued at about $200 million.

The project would cover some 99 per cent of the region, providing mobile access to 72,000 more homes and businesses as well as those who travel its highways.

“With this announcement and the funds that will be made available we think the time is right to act quickly on our project to improve cellular networks particularly in the rural areas of Eastern Ontario,” said Emon.

“This is a good decision by the CRTC. It’s important that people have equal access to broadband Internet at the same level of service and price in rural Eastern Ontario as our urban neighbours to allow them to compete more effectively,” he added.

“We need to build new towers, improve existing ones as well as add coverage and capacity and we are confident given our experience on the first EORN project that we can create another success partnership with private sector companies in our region,” said Burton.

Morgan It is with immense sorrow that the family of Joan R. Morgan (aged 90 years) announces her peaceful passing on Monday, December 19, 2016 at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital in Renfrew, Ontario. Joan was predeceased by her husband Gerald (“Gerry”) and brother Eric Rawlins.

Joan’s beautiful life will be remembered lovingly forever by her three children Chris, Rod (Margaret) and Lorna (Dan). Joan will also be remembered by her loving grandchildren (13), great grandchildren (13), nieces and nephews and many friends.

Born to Marjorie and Reginald Rawlins in London, England on February 14, 1926, Joan went on to marry Gerry in England, and then traveled to and lived in many parts of the world: St. Catharines ON, Pakistan, New Zealand, Northwest Territories (Nunavut), Florida, and Nova Scotia. After Gerry’s passing in 1983, Joan settled in Lakefield, Ontario and over a period of 27 years, became an active and loved member of that community, providing vital volunteer support for several organizations including Community Care, Lakefield Public School Breakfast Program, and Renewed Classics (clothing). Joan cherished her circle of good friends in Lakefield.

Joan worked as a telephone switchboard operator during the Second World War and later with Bell Telephone in Frobisher Bay (Iqaluit, Nunavut), where she also worked at the post office and as the librarian at the Centennial Library. She was a talented artist and poet and her wisdom, sense of humor, generosity, kindness and affection touched the lives of all those who were privileged to know her.

Our family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Renfrew Victoria Hospital for the compassionate care they provided to Joan in her final time with us.

Certified Road Superintendent (CRS) and/or OACETT designations will be considered an asset; • 5-10 years of experience in municipal or construction environment, including 3-5 years of supervisory experience; • Act as ORO (Overall Responsible Operator) for the Town’s Water Distribution System (Level I) and Wastewater Collection System (Level II); • Certification by the Ministry of the Environment as a Class I Operator of Water Distribution and Class II Operator of Wastewater Collection Systems; • A thorough knowledge of legislation and regulations that may impact the operation of a Municipal Public Works operation such as, but not limited to, the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways and Town By-laws and policies; • Class G Ontario Drivers Licence (will be required to provide abstract and provide on-going confirmation of appropriate licence). DZ licence will be considered an asset; • Possess knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, construction and repair of roadways sidewalks, bridges, culverts, storm and sanitary sewers, water systems and associated features including safety precautions.

Starting Jan. 1, Ottawa residents might find it hard to keep track of all the events planned for the nation’s capital to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. In an effort to help residents stay abreast of all that is going on to celebrate the anniversary in 2017, Metroland Media has created a special Ottawa 2017 calendar that highlights the city’s history since 1867.

Cheryl Hammond, director of advertising for the Ottawa region of Metroland Media, joined forces with editor-inchief Ryland Coyne and managing editor Theresa Fritz to create a calendar as a special 2017 memento.

“I think the photos are really special,” Hammond said. “It took us a long time to do it, because there were so many pictures to choose from.”

The calendar costs $5 and a portion of the proceeds will be divided to help two charities located in the Ottawa area — Dreams Take Flight, which takes physically, mentally or socially challenged children on a trip of a lifetime to Disney World in Florida, and Hospice Care Ottawa. There are 10,000 copies of the calendar for sale, which are available at all nine Kardish Health Food Centres, all three Ottawa Freshco stores and the Carleton Place Freshco, and at Home Hardware stores in Leitrim, Orleans, Manotick, Bridlewood and Richmond.

The women of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Auxiliary are very cheerful about raising close to $9,000 for the hospital’s new solarium, part of the Healing Garden project.

Their most recent raffle, Wheelbarrows of Cheer, was a complete sellout.

The winning tickets were pulled on Dec. 14 in the new auxiliary solarium during a small reception attended by auxiliary volunteers and prize sponsors.

“All money raised goes towards our five-year $250,000 commitment to this beautiful new room,” said RVH Auxiliary president Shauna Lemenchick. “We are very fortunate to have a place such as this for our patients and families to come to spend time in.”

The new fundraising idea was to sell tickets for one

wheelbarrow filled with a few bottles of wine, but it grew to three sought-after prizes: two overflowing wheelbarrows and a bar fridge fully stocked with holiday cheer.

“We never really expected such a great response from everybody,” Lemenchick said as she thanked the 25 sponsors for their generous support.

Auxiliary member Audrey Green told the story of how it all snowballed: “I went to Canadian Tire and ran into Bill Kenopic (the owner) and asked if he could maybe donate the wheelbarrow and he said, ‘Where’s your car?’ And that, believe it or not is how this whole thing took off.”

Green reported that the volunteers managed to sell all 2,500 tickets and raise $8,900 towards their pledge to the hospital.

Randy Penney, RVH president and CEO, drew the lucky ticket holder’s name for the grand prize valued at $1,500: Dan Pollock from Ashton, Ontario.

Second prize went to Vincent Johnson from Renfrew, and Christy O’Connor from Haley Station won the third prize.

“On behalf of the hospital and the foundation, I would like to thank our auxiliary and the sponsors that have stepped up to the plate once again,” commented Penney. “We are totally dependent upon local fundraising to be able to have a building like this. It really is our patients and their families who are going to benefit from your efforts. Throughout the years, our auxiliary has always been there to support the hospital in so many different ways, such a classy organization!”

St. Joe’s high school performs the Mannequin Challenge ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Remember the ice-bucket challenge a couple of years back?

Where everyone seemed to get into the whole idea of dumping a bucket of perfectly good ice water over their heads as a way of accepting challenges thrown out by others?

Obviously not something thought up by anyone who has to pay a municipal water bill.

Well, that’s gone now.

But the spirit of the whole thing remains, as a new craze is sweeping along the networks of social and mass media.

That new phenomenon is known as the Mannequin Challenge.

It would appear that St. Joseph’s High School is not immune to such waves of mass hysteria, as mannequin challenges appear to be popping up all over the place.

In fact, one media class has the option of incorporating such a production into their final culminating assignment.

Taking its cue, or perhaps inspiration, from that stalwart of retail marketing, the mannequin, teams of people of all types are using video to

capture what are basically tableaus, a fancy little name given to the exercise of having people hold predetermined poses, with the difference being a video camera moving around them and among them, capturing what appears to be a snippet of time, almost as if it was a photograph, only one where the camera is moving.

Make no mistake.

This flies in the face of one of the most fundamental rules of videography, that being that the camera remains still and the subjects move.

This mannequin business puts all that wonderful theory on its ear.

Perhaps it’s the intuitive knowledge that they’re breaking such a golden rule that appeals to those who take the time, and make the effort, to attempt this.

Or maybe it’s just fun.

At St. Joe’s, there didn’t appear to be an awful lot of reflective soulsearching as to why a mannequin challenge should be undertaken. It appeared, rather, to be a simple case of “Hey, we should do this!” And so it was done.

And let’s forget about things like planning, organizing, and getting everything set-up. No, let’s just go for

it, at half-time, in a gym packed with people, during one of the biggest events of the year, that being Baskets For The Bank. Let’s just, well, go for it!

And so they did. Six hundred people, or thereabouts. Remaining absolutely still. So that a camera could move about them as they held their poses. As if that was gonna fly.

But you know what? It did. It actually did fly. I mean, try to get thirty kids in a classroom to remain quiet and still during a critical examination of the Pythagorean Theorem. It’s like taking a bunch of cats out for a walk.

But the Mannequin Challenge? Well that’s different. Suddenly you have dozens upon dozens of students absolutely frozen in their places! For a minute! You can’t buy that kind of attention.

Sometimes things defy explanation. And sometimes, the fact that things defy explanation is explanation enough. The Mannequin Challenge appears to be one of those things, and full marks need to be given to everyone who made this thing work. And as for who came up with the idea in the first place?

God only knows.

Renfrew Minor Hockey Association weekly results Packers face Wolves This week in Renfrew Minor Hockey novice house action, the team hosted its seven-team tournament on Dec. 17 with a strong Almonte Pakenham team coming out on top with a win over Fred Hansma Construction (FHC) who were a tired group but gave a great effort.

FHC won the previous games 2-1 over the Rink Rats on goals

by Evan Charbonneau and Joshua Ruddy, Kyler Rea played well in goal stopping a couple breakaways.

The Rats got one past Rea by Jackson Sammon.

Fred Hansma Construction won another thriller 2-1 over Pembroke. Rea was steady in goal and Joshua Ruddy scored both goals.

The Rink Rats lost a barn burner 3-2 In the B-Final to Kanata. Jackson Sammon and Gabriel Leighton fired number one on the season and was named top hustler. Goalie Noah Hein was tremendous in goal and was named MVP. Hein earned a 5-0 shutout over Pembroke. Thomas Roselar scored three times, Jackson Sammon and William Moriarity fired singles.

Renfrew Pizzeria lost both

games 5-0 to Kanata and 3-2 to the Kanata Rebels.

Ross McGregor and Josh Cross scored.

Canadian Tire (CTC) (8-6) lost in Eganville Dec. 17 on a snowy day 3-2. Connor Hanniman scored twice in Eganville.

CTC won 5-0 at home Dec. 18 over Pembroke.

Isaac Labossiere had the shutout, his second. Colin Charron and Connor Hanniman each scored twice and Davis Runtz also scored.

Barker’s Collision Center are first overall at 11-0 had their games cancelled.

The Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League took a very short holiday break and now the teams are back at it.

One of the oldest rivalries on ice heats up for the next three games as the Arnprior Packers and the Renfrew Timberwolves play three games in a row.

On Dec. 23 the two faced off in Arnprior as the Packers honoured Daryle Meek. The Packers website described Meek as a staple in the community for many years.

He is a former Packers player and was the top defensemen on a number of occasions. Meek’s jersey was honoured before puck drop. Game score was unavailable due to early deadline. On Wednesday, Dec. 29 the Timberwolves host the Packers at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre with an 8 p.m. puck drop.

This game is also a special fundraiser for the Renfrew Midget Timberwolves who are off to compete in the International Silver Stick competition in early January.

The third game of the series is set for Friday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. also in Renfrew.

Even though the two teams are on opposite ends of the standings Packers head coach Tony Iob says they’re always great games.

“They always come hard,” said Iob. “Last time we played them, Renfrew was up 2-0 with eight minutes to go before we came back, so we can’t take them lightly.”

Iob says the rivalry goes back years.

“I can remember when I was a kid it was huge,” said Iob. The Packers are currently in third place of the Richardson Division with 47 points behind Perth with 51 and Richmond with 48. The Timberwolves are currently in last place with eight points.

Jo-anne Caldwell, program developer, Town of Renfrew parks and recreation department, also reminds people can get skates at the arena.

“People can borrow skates during public skate sessions – there are many different sizes available – child and adult,” said Caldwell in an email.

There are also a number of different activities you can enjoy at Ma-Te-Way. “The sliding hill is snow covered, people are out on the Ma-Te-Way Park trails snowshoeing (you can borrow snowshoes from the Recreation Centre) and cross-country skiing and the Recreation Centre has free play in the gymnasium over the holiday,” said Caldwell.

“People are welcome to play floor hockey, badminton or basketball during this unstructured time. The gymnasium is open to the public each day the facility is open.”

Tim Hortons is also sponsoring free skates at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior from Dec. 27 to Jan. 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. (excluding Dec. 31 and Jan. 1).

Youth indoor soccer league stars Jan. 9 The Lil’ Cleats indoor soccer league is back for its second year.

The program runs on Monday nights for two different age groups.

The under six league for boys and girls ages five and six goes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the under eight league is for boys and girls seven and eight years olds foes from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The six week program runs: Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13 at Renfrew Collegiate Institute gymnasium.

In case of bus cancellation, snow days,

safety permits are cancelled, and therefore Lil’ Cleat will be cancelled that night as well.

The coaches are: Wilson and Kyla Halk, they are both teachers with the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board.

This is our second year coaching Lil’ Cleats, and together we also have eight years coaching experience coaching soccer through the Renfrew Minor Soccer Club. The main objective is to foster, develop, and promote the game of soccer, while assisting in the development of individual athletic skill and

most importantly to encourage sportsmanship and to have fun!

Space is limited and capped at 25 (please email khalk@rccdsb.edu.on.ca to reserve a spot.

The $60 registration fee, and completed registration form, are due by the first night of the program (Monday, Jan. 9). Cash and/or cheque can be made payable to Kyla Halk.

The winning team consisted of Marg Dawson, Theresa Mann, Ann Forgie and Carol Mathers.The second place team consisted of Anne Windle, Rachel Leclaire, Louise Jamieson and Marie Edwards. Congratulations to all of the ladies. In Wednesday Skins action the team of Rob Warren, Karl Mann, Steve Hibbons and Kevin MacGillavary swept all of their games and took home the honours in the second draw.

Nine-and-one-half tables competed for honours at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre Dec. 21 as regulars didn't let holiday preparations trump an afternoon of duplicate bridge entertainment.

In the Chalk Talk preceding play, Wayne Daze highlighted Audrey Grant's guidelines for declarers. Her advice is that declarer should make a plan that has three components.

The first step is to assess the situation which involves counting winners and losers. If you have enough tricks, you should take them before something goes wrong. A second step comes into play if you find you need extra tricks.

The advice here is to browse the Declarer's Checklist which has five options to develop tricks or eliminate losers. These options are promotion, length, finesse, trumping losers and discarding.

A final piece of advice is to consider the best order in which to play the cards. Wayne concluded with two practice hands where players could apply Grant's advice.

The afternoon at Ma-Te-Way saw two successful small slams. On Board 1, Leanne Cheliak and Rick Duncan made six diamonds. Then on Board 8, Sharon and Tom Sewter brought home a six hearts contract. Kudos to both pairs. Congratulations to the Dec. 21 winners: NORTH-SOUTH

Maple yule log a holiday favourite from Foodland Ontario This holiday tradition is even more Canadian with the addition of pure maple syrup. Spread maple syrup-flavoured whipped cream on the maple sheet cake and roll up. This can be made up to three weeks ahead, assembled and frozen.

Preparation time: 30 minutes Baking time: 12 minutes Serves: 10 to 12 Ingredients Cake: * 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose or cake-andpastry flour * 1 tsp (5 mL) baking powder * 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt * 4 Ontario eggs * 1/4 cup (50 mL) maple syrup * 1 cup (250 mL) brown sugar, not packed * Icing sugar Filling: * 1 cup (250 mL) whipping cream * 2 to 3 tbsp (25 to 45 mL) maple syrup Topping: * 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) whipping cream * 1/4 cup (50 mL) maple syrup

Garnishes: * Cocoa, shaved chocolate and whole cranberries.

Preparation instructions Line 17- x 11-inch (45 x 29 cm) rimmed baking sheet with parchment. Spray with no-stick vegetable spray. Set aside. In small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt to blend well.

In large bowl and using electric mixer, beat eggs and maple syrup until slightly thickened.

Gradually add brown sugar, beating until thick.

Sift flour mixture over egg mixture in three additions, folding in gently after each addition.

Spread evenly in pan. Bake in 400°F (200°C) oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until light brown and firm to the touch.

Sift about 2 tbsp (25 mL) icing sugar onto clean tea towel in even layer. Invert cake and pan onto towel. Remove pan; carefully peel off paper.

Roll up cake and towel together (begin at short or long edge, depending on whether you want a longer thin or shorter thick Yule log). Cool completely on rack.

In chilled medium bowl, whip cream with maple syrup until firm peaks form. Unroll cake and spread filling evenly over cake. Roll up, using towel to help. (Cake can be wrapped and frozen at this point if desired, or frozen after adding whipped cream topping.)

Only time would tell if Emerson could build his dreams There was nothing left in the house to remind us that Christmas had ever happened. The tree, as bare as a badger, was in the backyard, the few decorations packed away, and the last of the shortbread long gone.

We children were left with a few presents as reminders that just a few days before, our lives were filled with carol singing, the smell of the tree, and a table laden with turkey pie, Christmas cake and Mother’s French Tourtieres. Now it was all leftovers.

But there was still the thrill of enjoying the few presents, one from Santa, and of course, the usual new mitts, socks and underwear. And a book.

Mother always managed to find a few pennies to buy each of us a book for Christmas. But it was my brother Emerson who always knew even before Christmas morning, what one of his presents would be. And even though he knew what it was, he was always thrilled to open the same present he would get every year.

Early in the fall, Mother would have gone into Ritza’s Rexall Drug Store for its ‘one-cent-sale’ and for 10 cents she would buy one large white writing pad ... and for another nickel, she would get five more. These would be tucked away until Christmas, then wrapped and put under the tree for Emerson. Emerson loved to draw.

Not animals, or trees, or scenes of the country, but buildings. He could sit for hours drawing the most outlandish buildings you ever saw! He drew big glass buildings, never before seen on the face of the earth ... all made of glass. For heaven’s sake! Glass! Who ever heard of glass buildings? And

Mother forbid us to say anything to Emerson about his crazy drawings. We could laugh ourselves sick behind his back, but he was to be left alone with his fantasy buildings.
