Santa Claus parade Nov. 26 STAFF

Jolly Old St.Nick himself will be hitting the streets of Arnprior this weekend.

The annual Santa Claus parade, hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 174, Arnprior, is set for Saturday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m.

The parade will start at Winners Circle Drive and goes down Daniel Street, then turns left onto Eady Street, then turns on John Street and turns right at the museum and

goes back to Winners Circle.

Everyone is invited back to the legion afterwards when a special visitor may appear so that young and old can share their Christmas wishes.

Volunteers will also be collecting loose change and non-perishable food items along the parade route for the Arnprior and District Food Bank.

A one per cent increase would generate an additional $42,470 to the municipal coffers.

But Lochtie had yet to calculate how much that would mean to the average homeowner.

It came as no surprise to anyone on council that policing is the single largest driver of the tax increase. The new billing model introduced last year means “significant increases” between then and 2018. OPP spending will increase by just over $161,000 to a total of about $866,000.

The additional policing cost, pegged at 3.8 per cent, includes calls for service. Calls are estimated every few years based on previous

actuals. Often the municipality gets money refunded, but doesn’t expect to get anything back in 2019 when the estimate is next revised.

Another major factor driving up the levy is increasing the number of workers. Staff suggests moving a part-time “cashier/receptionist” to full time. That will put the staffer’s salary into the $40,000 to $48,000 range, plus benefits.

A new winter plow operator would cost about $16,600.

After the presentation, members of the public were invited to ask questions. Christopher Clarke questioned the need for a full-time cashier. Growth has been slow; it is at .58 per cent.

Staff wages will increase by just over $19,000 to account for the 1.1 per cent cost of living adjustment. Volunteer firefighters could see a $5,000 boost to “provide more competitive pay as compared to neighbouring municipalities,” reads the report. Horton pays $18.57 per hour, plus four per cent vacation pay.

A third major factor driving taxes up is the need for new equipment, specifically a $63,000 fire rescue truck.

The U.S.-made vehicle will likely be dropped due to the sagging Canadian loonie.

Police warn drivers to slow down on the roads during snowy weather The winter driving season may have caught some people off guard, as Renfrew and Arnprior Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were busy with collisions and vehicles in the ditch during the first winter storm of the season. As the cold weather arrived on Nov. 20 and 21, and snow began to fall, officers responded to 31 collisions and traffic related calls (and the storm continues).

Drivers are urged to stay off the roads during inclement weather if they can.

If you must go out, make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter driving, including having good windshield wipers, top up your washer fluid, and install four winter tires.

Most importantly, slow down and give yourself plenty of stopping distance.

An area seniors' group recent meeting welcomed providers of both mental and physical health activities.

The Greater Arnprior Seniors Council (GASC) met at Nick Smith Centre on Nov. 16. The five senior citizen members, along with representatives from the town and township, Arnprior Regional Health, Seniors At Home, Hospice Renfrew, and the family health team, gathered to learn about available programs in both the public and private realm.

GASC grew out of the Town of Arnprior's two-year creation of an Age-Friendly Community Plan, designed to support and enable older people to "live in a secure environment, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in their communities," according to chairman Darrel O'Shaughnessy.

The group has also teamed up with others to pressure the provincial government for more long-term care beds in the region.

However, at the meeting a town recreation worker, a librarian, and a Township of McNab/Braeside representative shared details on the programs and activities available to seniors. Rick Gwalchmai is the town's recreation program co-ordinator. He pointed to the magazine Arnprior Life and the website arnprior. ca for complete details, then talked about the pool, two ice pads, community hall, and weight room at Nick Smith Centre.

There are adult aqua fitness classes five times a week that are "fairly active," Gwalchmai said, but can be modified upon request. A water fitness class by certified instructors is geared to rehabilitation training.

It is for those with hip or back issues related to arthritis, and is considered very slow and gentle.

"It's meant to keep the muscles and joints supple," Gwalchmai said. "Water has magical healing powers."

Doctors are increasingly referring patients to the program, he added.

Another program called Boot Camp H2O is

"more energetic" and usually for younger participants. There are also adult swimming lessons and public swims. Three leisure swims are for seniors and free of charge.

Old-timers hockey takes place some mornings and nights, and public skates are open to all.

Walks at the high school take place, but going up and down stairs and travelling along inclines can be too much for some, he said, so the town offers a "walk and talk and tea" in the community hall. It also hosts a chair-fitness course. Free transportation is available by calling the town.

There are also couples dance classes and linedancing, along with sing-a-longs and watercolours workshops.

There is also low-impact yoga for seniors twice a week; one at Island View Suites and the second at The Villa retirement homes. They teach breathing and relaxation skills.

"It has been really well received," he said.

Other activities have been less so, including carpet bowling and shuffle board. Pickleball (similar to table tennis) is gaining interest among seniors across Canada, including Arnprior.

In summer there is sailing at the marina and swimming at Robert Simpson Beach. The Grove and Macnamara trail offer shaded walking.

The township offers mostly seasonal activities like horseshoes at Wellington Park, along with swimming at Burnstown Beach and Red Pine Bay in Braeside. Both Braeside and White Lake have outdoor rinks. Seniors play euchre at the Braeside RC Centre. There is baseball at McNab Park. A cycling group called MAFIA (Men Against Fat In Arnprior) is fairly intense, going on 100-kilometre rides.

The curling club, a dragon boat group, and private workout centres such as Kenwood and Ultimate Fitness have programs for seniors.

The annual Renfrew County Games offers activities throughout the region in May and June, but it hasn't been well attended in recent years. Arnprior offers carpet bowling; seven or eight teams of two participated last year.

Skiing is offered in nearby Pakenham and Calabogie, with special passes for seniors over 70.

In Pakenham and Fitzroy Provincial Park there is cross-country skiing.

There are extensive snowmobile trails throughout the region.

Moving from the physical to mental, Arnprior Public Library's chief librarian Karen Deluca stressed that the vast majority of their services are free with a library card.

Although many believe the library is mostly geared toward kids, she said 70 per cent of activities are for adults (including seniors).

She talked about ancestry research, the availability of consumer reports, newspapers and magazines, and free technology training.

Bring in your laptop or handheld device and receive one-on-one training from a librarian.

The library has a monthly newsletter and the board of directors meets regularly. They consider communitygenerated ideas and more.

There is a knitting group that talks books.

Salute youth Extraordinary young leaders they’re all around us - in schools, at church and on sports teams.

The truth is, there are young people everywhere who are working hard to make their community a better place by volunteering for various organizations, making donations, saving lives and maintaining top grade averages.

It’s time to recognize their dedication and nominate them for a 2016 Ontario Junior Citizen Award. Our newspaper strongly supports this program here in Arnprior, because we care about the growth of our community.

Harper promised he would be providing compensation to dairy farmers for their loses and now it looks as if government is going to be implementing “transition” – in government terms - you probably aren’t going to receive anything because government is broke.

Not to take away anything from those who are to receive compensation but why are Canadians on the hook to provide compensation because our government doesn’t seem able to enter into an agreement that is favorable for Canadians?

Isn’t this indirectly subsidizing

foreign companies because foreign governments seem to have done a better job negotiating a better deal for their businesses, over Canadian businesses?

Talk about spreading Canadian’s wealth globally, to the detriment of Canadians.

Then there is the public-private partnerships (3Ps) Trudeau is looking at.

He had a meeting recently, in Toronto, with large foreign business representatives, asking them to foot the bill for infrastructure which will more than likely involve road-tolls, bridge tolls, etc.

Things were wild during the timber times in Renfrew County.

Larry Cotton’s new book The Turbulent Square Timber Era, the sixth book in the Whiskey and Wickedness Ottawa Valley series, examines life in the Valley during the bustling time.

“People will find it entertaining, informative and educational,” Cotton said of his newest book. “I’m very happy with the way it turned out.”

This is a sequel to his Canadian bestseller Whiskey and Wickedness Renfrew County, published in 2008.

Cotton has a passion for writing historicalbased books and is currently writing three more books.

“This is a retirement project. The important thing is to determine a passion, I would have gone crazy,” said Cotton on his love of writing.

“Some people slow down but I drive by a small town and wonder if that old hotel could talk.

Well it can. I can walk by and say I read a story about that. People have to realize how important the town’s histories are.”

Cotton has written 18 historical-based books and the new one on the timber era was published in October.

He uses early newspapers, criminal court records, coroners inquests, journals and diaries to write his stories.

“I try and get most of my stuff from primary documents but I like to put by own narrative to it,” said Cotton. “I think I have a strong sense of whimsy.”

The Perth-based author, is originally from the Barrie area but also taught at Madawaska High School and started as the planner for the County of Renfrew in 1976, serving for de-

cades.

Some of his other books look at Barrie, Orillia, Muskoka/Parry Sound, Simcoe, Toronto, Halton and Hamilton.

Cotton says a large majority of the male population in eastern Ontario worked in some capacity of the timber trade.

“It was unique in terms of the number of men occupied in the trade, it was different than the northern Toronto area,” said Cotton. “In eastern Ontario and western Quebec, you have the river and 80 men died in one year. Along the Madawaska River you had a very high mortality rate because there was quite a bit more violence because of the ethnic groups, the quality of timber and the number of taverns.”

But there was one specific reason this area was more unique.

“It was a wild and woolly place to work,” said Cotton.

He says the new book is really the story of the average working man’s life in the bush in the mid-19th century, which was calls it a rite of passage into manhood.

“If you go and ask half a dozen people in Renfrew what their great-grandfathers did, they worked in the shanty or hauling supplies. It’s a universal experience every man went through.”

Cotton has two book signings coming up.

On Nov. 26, he will be at the Arnprior Book Shop from 2 to 5 p.m. and he will be in Renfrew on Dec. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at A Sense of Country.

They chose the wrong bird Last week I wrote about the Greater White-fronted Geese that were frequenting the Madawaska Headpond.

These stray geese stayed until at least Nov. 14. More recently, another species of goose has made the news but for a very different reason. Earlier this year the Royal Canadian Geographic Society started a campaign to name a national bird.

The five finalists were: Canada Goose, Common Loon, Snowy Owl, Gray Jay, and Blackcapped Chickadee. A public forum was held at the Canadian Museum of Nature where a proponent for each species defended his or her choice. When the one for Canada Goose fell ill, I was asked to take her place. I turned down the invitation because I strongly felt another species deserved to be placed on a national pedestal.

My choice: the Black-capped Chickadee.

Last week it was announced that the Gray Jay was the winner. Now, I have nothing but admiration for that gentle bird of the north for many reasons, including those given for its selection (i.e., found across Canada, hardy, friendly, and smart).

However, those attributes

equally apply to Black-capped Chickadees. And these affable little birds own other impressive features.

Their hippocampus, the part of the brain dealing with spatial memory, grows larger in the fall to enhance their owners’ ability to store and retrieve food. On cold winter nights chickadees lower their body temperature by 12°C, entering a deep sleep called torpor to conserve energy. And their feather insulation is among the best in the bird world.

Other points tip the scales in favour of Black-capped Chickadees. They are found

across Canada in many habitats, including cities where they come to backyard feeders and land on us for handouts on public trails; almost every Canadian knows them! In winter chickadees socialize with other species forming “mixed-species flocks.” When they encounter a predator, chickadees give alarm calls that give information as the level of danger it presents, information that other species decipher.

Conversely, Gray Jays are boreal forest birds that stick to themselves, seldom socializing with other species. Comparatively few Canadians have met or even know the species. And last but not least, part of their name bears an American, not Canadian, spelling.

A dark cloud hovers over this competition. Unexpectedly, near the finish line, Blackcapped Chickadee, Common Loon, and Snowy Owl were disqualified, even though two of those species garnered more votes than Gray Jay. Why? Because those three were already provincial symbols (New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec, respectively). But this begs the question: “Why did the contest organizers allow these

WI names recipients of Women of Excellence Fair Award 2016 This year’s Arnprior Fair recipient of the Women’s Institute (WI) Women of Excellence Fair Award 2016 is Karyn Martin.

A member of the White Lake Women’s Institute for 19 years, Martin brings new, interesting and innovative programs and ideas to our organization.

She has also been involved in the Arnprior and Renfrew fairs for many years. She is passionate about opening new worlds for her students in the classroom and encourages all of her school and her community to enter items, volunteer and participate at the local fairs.

Martin also works with the demolition derby team at the Arnprior Fair to provide great entertainment during this event. It was a day to celebrate a group that has not only supported individuals with breast cancer for 20 years but also blazed trails in Arnprior and area.

The Arnprior and District Breast Cancer Support Group hosted an open house to celebrates its 20th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The anniversary event was held in place of the group’s annual fundraising dinner, which was held for the past 18 years.

Earlier this year, officials announced they’re open to having another group host the dinner and are considering other fundraising ideas.

Elta Watt and Rita Clouthier, two of the founding members, were on hand for the event.

“This is just so special,” said Watt.

“We’re so grateful for the support over the past 20 years.”

She was overwhelmed by the turnout.

“When we started this we had no idea it would turn into this,” said Watt.

“It was the breast cancer group that did that,” said Gibeau. “All council did was pass the resolution.”

Among those who spoke at the event were Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski, Arnprior Mayor David Reid and McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett.

“Thank you from our council and the greater Arnprior community,” said Reid, who made note of the large turnout for the open house. “Keep up the good work.”

The Breast Cancer Support Group meetings will continue every third Tuesday of the month at the Arnprior Public Library from 7 to 9 p.m.

For Cathy Balla-Boudreau, the process of the workshop was important. “Seeing the set, then talking about it and then going back to it to reaffirm,” said Balla-Boudreau.

“The idea that you have to reframe your lifestyle and re-evaluate values. Consider what really works and how one wants to personally invest.”

Once again, the Arnprior Community Choir, under the direction of its founder Lisa Webber, will present its concert Sing Noel on the first Sunday in December, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church, 116 Baskin Dr. West in Arnprior.

This fall, the Arnprior Community Choir has 80 members from the local area and beyond – Almonte, Renfrew, Pakenham, Kinburn, Bells Corners, and West Carleton – and enjoys creating wonderful choral music together.

The dedication and enthusiasm by all members has led to the choir’s long success in the community.

This year’s Sing Noel, the annual Christmas concert presented by the Arnprior Community Choir, will include a wonderful program of excellent choral music from the choir and special guests.

Young students of song and piano will also feature prominently.

Mallory Brumm, Webber’s high school co-op student and senior private voice student, will join her in a program of duets.

The duo will perform four pieces accompanied by local musicians

Elizabeth Brumm on piano and James Hrkach on guitar. And Rhiannon Hendley, a student of the choir’s pianist Andrea de Boer, will perform a piano duet with Andrea on the hauntingly beautiful The First Noel/Pachelbel’s Canon.

The choir will be presenting a mix of music to get you in the Christmas spirit. Christmas on Broadway features a number of pieces with a delightful Broadway singing style.

The Huron Carol, a long-time carol favourite, is sung acapella.

And Below the Mistletoe has a real sixties rhythm and do-wop style that will put a smile on your face.

The audience will not only delight in listening to these pieces, but they will have a chance to sing familiar carols and enjoy a festive reception following the concert.

Health unit provides tips as November is Fall Prevention Month RENFREW COUNTY AND DISTRICT HEALTH UNIT

During November, Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) is helping older adults, as well as their family members and caregivers, recognize what they can do to prevent falls.

Falls are the main reason older adults lose their independence.

In Renfrew County and district, approximately 1,800 older adults visit a hospital emergency department

each year for care of injuries caused by falls.

This averages five visits per day in emergency departments across Renfrew County.

The good news is that there are many things that can be done to prevent falls.

RCDHU, along with the other Champlain regional health units and the Champlain LHIN, are encouraging older adults living in the community to use the Staying Independent checklist to identify their risk

of falling and to discuss their risks with their doctor or health care practitioner.

This is an important first step in preventing future falls.

Nursery recognizes quilters’ guild The Arnprior and District Quilters’ Guild hosted a very special visitor at the October meeting.

Trish McEachern, a registered nurse from the Rich Little Special Care Nursery, presented a plaque to the guild members in recognition of their support of their nursery.

“For several years the guild members have been donating little 24-inch square ‘preemie’

quilts to the nursery,” says a guild press release.

“Each baby that is cared for in the nursery receives a quilt.

Last year we donated over 150 of these little quilts to the nursery. Trish relayed now meaningful these little quilts are to the families. We have received many uplifting thank you notes from appreciative parents for these treasured gifts.”

Snowy season to yield best ski conditions in years: forecaster AccuWeather reports a snowy season is in store for some of Canada’s biggest cities as winter storms dump frequent snow on eastern Canada.

This winter is expected to play out much differently across eastern Canada than it did last year, when mild conditions and below-normal snowfall dominated.

“The upcoming winter will likely be a stormy one across eastern and Atlantic Canada, especially during January and February,” said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Brett Anderson.

“This pattern will lead to a higher probability of significant snowfall events from eastern Ontario through Quebec and into New Brunswick and Newfoundland,” he said.

This includes some of Canada’s largest cities such as Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City.

The forecast is good news for ski resorts across the region that had a slow season last year due to mild weather and below-normal snowfall.

“I expect this upcoming ski season to be significantly better than

last winter’s,” Anderson said.

Meanwhile, areas closer to the relatively warmer ocean water will receive more than just snow.

“Areas such as Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island will see constant battles between snow, ice and rain,” Anderson said.

ARCTIC TO FREEZE PRAIRIES

The Canadian Prairies have already had a taste of winter with both chilly air and accumulating snow, but the worst of the season will hold off until the arrival of 2017.

The start of the season will feature occasional intrusions of chilly air, but the overall pattern will favor windier and milder conditions in cities such as Calgary and Edmonton.

“A pattern change by midwinter will likely send waves of very cold Arctic air directed into the southern Prairies for January and February,” Anderson said.

The onset of each wave of arctic air may bring some periods of snow, especially in southwestern Alberta,

but this will be followed up by drier conditions once the frigid air takes hold.

“Despite the arctic fronts, a persistent northwesterly flow of air during the second half of winter will suppress moisture far to the south, leading to below-normal snowfall over the eastern Prairies,” he said.

Skiers to benefit from stormy start to winter in British Columbia, Canadian Rockies A stormy pattern typical of winter will set up over British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies, delivering rounds of rain and mountain snow across the region.

“Heavy snow will quickly pile up in the mountains, which should get the western ski season off to a good start,” Anderson said.

This will allow ski resorts in British Columbia and Alberta to establish a solid base early in the season that will last through the spring.

While winter may start off wet and snowy across the region, a change in the weather pattern will cause the frequency of storms to decrease

coast, possibly making it all the way to Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the overall weather pattern this winter will favor warmer-than-normal conditions across far northern Canada, including Nunavut, the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories.

Winter driving tips from the OPP

With winter weather in the forecast the Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind motorists that adverse weather conditions put extra demands on you as a driver and on your vehicle’s performance.

“Stay alert, slow down, stay in control,” says an OPP press release. “These are three key elements to safe winter driving.”

Motorists are advised of the following safety tips to help everyone arrive at their destination safely.

• Drive according to current road and weather conditions. Reduce your speed when adverse weather conditions arise.

• Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Remember, longer stopping distances may be required.

• Be able to see and be seen. Clean frost and snow off all windows, mirrors, and lights.

• Consider installing four winter tires on your vehicle, install good wiper blades and keep an ample supply of windshield washer fluid in your vehicle.

• Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.

Consider postponing or cancelling your trip if the weather does not improve.

The following is a list of some recommended items to carry in your vehicle: • A charged cell phone in case of an emergency.

• An ice scraper, snow brush, a small shovel, sand, salt or other traction aid.

• Booster cables, road flares, fuel line anti-freeze, and tow rope.

• Extra clothing and footwear, a blanket, high energy non-perishable food, matches and a candle.

• Flashlight, small tool kit, first aid kit.

To check on road conditions before your trip you can call 5-1-1.

Annual hockey tournament raises over $10,000 for charity DAVE MCCORMICK

The 31st annual ‘It Shouldn’t Hurt To Be A Child’ hockey tournament wrapped up this past weekend, Nov. 18 and 19 at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior and once again was a great success.

The event kicked off Friday at 6 p.m. with opening ceremonies that included four youth teams; U14 Ringette teams from Arnprior McNab and Metcalfe, as well as Pembroke Atom Flames and Arnprior Atom Knights House league. Ainsley Phillips sand a beautiful rendition of our national anthem and then the games began.

Over the weekend 28 teams competed in both ladies and mens’ divisions.

The overall winner in the ladies VIA Rail championship game was local team Pickel Vixens defeating Arnprior Moose in a hard fought final game.

The Myers consolation ladies final was won by Valley power over Pirie insulation, and in the Kelly Huibers McNeely Final Golden Lake Thunderbirds took home the prize in the women’s Tomlinson Final Scissor girls defeated Goulbourn. In the men’s Brokerlink Insurance division Renfrew Millionaires were victorious The Prior Sports Bar Division winners were open Roads of Stittsville.

Men’s recreational 19 plus division winners were Don Cherry’s of Ottawa defeating the Beer Hall Heroes of Arnprior in the Herzing College Championship game 4-3 in overtime. Other winners were Danny Macs taking home the honors in the Lafarge Final, the Coasters won the Reid Bros final, and Cianni Construction defeated Richmond Goats in the consolation men’s final.

The BIG winner was the charity Victims of Violence Canadian center for missing children, and although not all is calculated just yet it looks like over $10,000 was raised in the 2016 event. Arnprior fans of the town’s best shot at an NHL draft pick next year can watch Liam Hawel on television this week.

Hawel, the Soo Greyhounds centre who stands 6’5”, plays against the IceDogs in Mississauga in Ontario Hockey League (OHL) action this Friday night, starting at 7 p.m.

Hawel, who sports #22, has played in all 23 games this year registering two goals and four assists, with some time on power play and the penalty kill. He played his minor hockey in the Ottawa Valley Titans AAA system while growing up in Arnprior.

Sault Ste. Marie chose him in the first round of the 2015 OHL draft.

The 17-year-old is expected to go between the second and fourth round of the NHL draft in 2017.

Hawel’s father Andrew said the game should be a good one. Although the promising IceDogs have struggled to start the year, the Greyhounds are tied for third overall and filled with draft potential. He is also pleased with Liam’s progress this year.

“It’s going pretty well for him.

He’s getting decent ice time,” Andrew said. “It’s still a matter of time. Everybody develops at a different pace at this age. Some are later than others.”

His son hasn’t said much about preferences for NHL teams to play on. He was an Edmonton Oiler fan, but also follows particular players.

“He hasn’t talked about it lately. I think he’d just be glad to be picked by any of them. Who wouldn’t?”

Liam is blessed with speed, good hands, and fine hockey sense. The one criticism he has had to endure is his size. While one of the tallest on the ice every game, he weighs in at just 179 pounds. But he works out every day, and takes advantage of the off season to pile on the pounds.

“It’s hard to maintain the calories when they are on the go,” Andrew said. “It’ll come.”

The OHL game will appear on both SportsNet and SportsNet 360, along with Cogeco 52, 56, and 741; Bell 410, 845, 1410; Shaw Advance 114, 118, and 608; and Shaw Classic 108, 403, and 417. A couple of other chances to see the Greyhounds will come up later in the season.

The Arnprior Packers are in first place in the Richardson Division of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League after two big weekend wins.

On Nov. 16, the Packers had a huge win over the former first-place team the Richmond Royals 9-6.

“It was a great effort by the whole team to keep on playing hard to get the win,” said Tony Iob, Packers head coach, in an email.

“We seem to find ways to win.”

The two teams go head-to-head again on Sunday, Nov. 27 in Goulbourn at 2:30 p.m..

“We know that they are a team that doesn’t stop playing even if the score is out of reach,” said Iob. On Nov. 19, the Packers defeated the Char-Lan Rebels 6-4.

“Going into the third down 4-2, I don’t think the team thought we would lose,” said Iob on the come from behind victory.

“The Packers kept up the pressure we had in the second and brought it into the third. Big goals early in the third put them on their heels.”

Coins had a ‘Come easy, go easy’ fate for this special treat The winter Eaton’s catalogue had arrived.

The mailman left it in our mailbox.

It was fat and shiny with a woman wearing a bright red coat on the cover. It was sitting on the kitchen table when I got home from school.

I couldn’t wait until supper was over, the kitchen redded up and the red and white checked oilcloth wiped clean.

My sister Audrey knew what was ahead and though she wasn’t nearly excited as I was, she too, would be pouring over each page, from the fashions in the front, to the corsets, the Christmas decorations and candy and the tools and farm items at the back.

The old catalogue, dog-eared, with pages torn out where necessary, would be moved to the outhouse after Father had punched a hole in the upper corner to feed through a piece of strong binder twine to hang it from the spike inside the door.

Mother would look through the new catalogue when she had time,

and order the usual long underwear and a pair of navy blue fleece lined bloomers for me.

We had little hope of getting anything else from Eaton’s catalogue.

Until that night.

As soon as Audrey and I sat on the long bench behind the kitchen table, and the book was in front of us, I turned right towards the back and the pails upon pails of Christmas candy.

This was one of my favourite sections and I could almost taste the striped hard candy and the chocolates that had been strewed over the entire page, looking like they had been accidentally spilled from the cans holding them.

“Enough of that page,” Audrey said.

She was ready to move on. I shoved the book over to Mother sitting at the end of the table working on her diaries.

“If I took all the pennies out of the corner of my hanky, do you think we could take some out of the eggmoney to add to them and maybe buy one of those little pails of candy?”

I figured it was worth a try. Mother looked at the page, ran the tips of her fingers over the candy pictures and in the lowest of voices said, “I don’t see why not.”

Well!! Father shook his head, my three brothers, let war hoops out of them that could be heard in Arnprior, Audrey was pouring over the page to see what pail to pick and I thought I was going to cry!

It seemed like only a few days before the candy arrived on a Saturday, C.O.D., Mother paying the mailman with a handful of coins and the fight was on to see who would open the

scooped up by licking the end of his finger and running it around the inside bottom of the pail. Audrey said the pail would be good for picking raspberries the next summer.

We were all sitting around the kitchen table as usual when the last candy was eaten with Christmas more than a month away.

Mother was at her diaries and was no doubt thinking about the coins taken out of the egg money in the blue sugar bowl to pay for the candy.

The pail sat empty in the middle of the table. Father never took his eyes off the Ottawa Farm Journal, but we all heard him say, “Come easy, go easy.” We knew he wasn’t talking about the candy, but the coins taken out of the egg money to pay for it.

And there it was, a shiny pail of Christmas candy and the holiday weeks away!

The excitement wasn’t to end there. Just before we were to head upstairs to bed, Mother said she could see nothing wrong with opening the pail and giving each of us just one to taste!

I picked a green and white striped one and Audrey looked for and found a cinnamon one, with the brothers, so anxious to get a taste, just grabbed one off the top and popped it into their mouths.

Well, having a piece of the Christmas candy every night before we went to bed became a ritual and it wasn’t long until we could see the bottom of the pail. We knew there wasn’t a hope of getting another order of candy from Eaton’s catalogue.

And then the pail was empty.

All that remained was a dusting of sugar in the bottom, which Emerson

The Canadian Peace Initiative Arnprior and Area Chapter has grown into one of public awareness, a petition campaign, noting the International Day of Peace, and a membership campaign. On Wednesday the local members of the Canadian Peace Initiative and all interested citizens are invited to a meeting to discuss current national and local initiatives to forward a political agenda for peace. The way forward has been approved at the recent AGM and now specific actions in each Chapter is required. Your attendance would be appreciated.
