While Arnprior has suffered through crime waves before, a series of incidents last week was notable for who was targeted.

The insensitive acts by vandals and thieves has angered the public because the victims include such community service organizations as the Arnprior Legion, Neighbourhood Fountain and the Macnamara Field Naturalists.

As well, local businesses and car owners continue to be targeted by thieves in a summer that has seen a series of mostly minor incidents.

However, the public appears to be growing increasingly irritated with petty thefts from homes, cars and businesses and the damage that often accompanies them.

OPP are investigating several incidents, including two overnight break-ins on Aug. 30-31, and have made an arrest.

A 16-year-old male was picked up in Arnprior Sept. 1 and is facing several charges related to the thefts.

STEALING FROM VETS

The targets were the Arnprior Legion on Daniel Street and Scheel Window and Door on Madawaska Boulevard.

OPP officers responded to an alarm at the Legion on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 11:09 p.m.

When they arrived they found a door forced open, a safe damaged and cash stolen.

What makes the theft particularly galling is that the money raised at the Legion goes toward helping veterans and their families.

Don’t get talked into an expensive water filter.

That’s the message from two Arnprior residents who are trying to extract themselves from a 10year contract with a Toronto-area company.

The highly publicized two-day water ban in town in early August has made Arnprior residents the target of companies selling water purification products.

In response, the Town of Arnprior has sent out a release emphasizing to residents on the town system that their water is safe and to be careful about being talking into buying expensive add-ons.

Arnprior resident Clare Charette has a cautionary tale relating to a water filter system she and her partner were talked into buying back in May. She maintains the sales person indicated he was acting for the government and needed to check her water. “He looked official … so we stupidly let him in,” she said.

He tested their town water with a substance that turned it pink, Charette said, adding that he said it showed that they should do something about the minerals in the town’s water.

After getting them to answer a series of questions on the phone to a call centre, it was recommended they buy a water filter. Charette insists that while it was to be leased from the company for $67 a month, the sales person told them the province would be picking up a good part of the tab.

Within two hours of signing the papers, the filter had been installed in the water system in her basement, she said. “It was much larger than I thought … it looks like a rocket.”

It’s also noisy, she adds, especially when it comes on at 2 in the morning.

Charette maintains that there were never given a copy of the contract and it wasn’t until a few days later that they found out they had signed up for 10 years. It also became clear that the province would not be paying any of the lease

“I can’t keep paying this … I could lose my house … everything,” she said, adding that she may have to come out of retirement to afford to continue the fight. “I’m so discouraged by all this.”

Charette says she no longer trusts people who come to her door. “I used to like to talk to people, but now I’m afraid to open my door.”

She cautions other residents to be careful when anyone suggests their water system needs a filter or purification system.

She would like to talk to anyone who has had experience with the company or any similar firm or has ideas on how she can resolve her dilemma. If interested in talking to her, leave a contact number or email with the newspaper, she said.

TOWNSHIP ALERT

Arnprior is not the only municipality advising its residents to be cautious when approached about their water.

McNab-Braeside has issued a ‘scam alert’, urging residents to call police if anyone claiming to be from the township offers to test their water. The township stresses that it doesn’t test private wells.

Canoeist paddles across Canada for war veteran services Continued from front

“He’s been with me on all three trips,” said Ranta, who glided into the Arnprior marina on Aug. 29.

“He’s got a great life.”

The two set off from British Columbia this spring for Cape Breton, N.S. Their attempt in 2014, which also found them stopping at a friend’s in Arnprior, was cut short by a massive Atlantic storm. It still won them the record for longest solo trip.

They are determined to complete the trip this time.

“It’s a dream of mine and I’m going to do it,” said Ranta, who sports a permanent half grin under wild straw-like hair and a birch bark hat. “Not really competitive; I’m just determined to get this done.”

He is also determined to share a message: Canada must do better by its war veterans. Ranta has a large wooden flag with numerous veterans’ signatures from folks he has met along the way.

He wants better mental health services for them, and is “embarrassed and ashamed” to see so many living homeless on Canadian streets.

Mike Ranta and his trusty dog Spitzii are travelling across Canada by canoe, again. The pair stopped in Arnprior recently, as they did in 2014, en route to Cape Breton. They are determined to complete the trek this time.

One story stands out for him.

A veteran met him at one stop and told him about landing on the beaches of Normandy. Of the 98 with him, 83 perished on the first day alone.

Ranta knew he was looking at a hero, but also a feeble old man with little fight left in him. Certainly not enough to do battle with the De-

partment of Veterans Affairs.

“He told me about his pension getting cut and how he doesn’t know how he will get by,” Ranta said. “I’m not ashamed to tell you that I cried with him on the side of the road. We can help these guys out. They don’t deserve this.”

On the mental health side, entire families are affected. Ranta didn’t

go into detail, but his brother was once a soldier and now he “suffers a little bit” from PTSD. But he has hope, saying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a good heart and will do what is necessary to end the suffering.

“It really bothers me to know they are going through that,” he said. “I see a real change for the positive with Justin Trudeau. He’s got a lot of compassion and I want to be part of that. I want to be a true Canadian.”

He finds much goodwill on his journey, including his time at Doug Mitchell’s home near Division Street just outside of Arnprior in McNab-Braeside. Man and dog enjoyed a nice meal in a busy household, then returned to the marina where they bedded down for the night. Indoor beds are too soft, the rooms too quiet. If he does stay at someone’s house, he sleeps on the floor.

It takes him a long time to adjust after a trip. He sleeps in the backyard for 10 days or so.

“It’s almost a shock,” he said, adding that wanderlust is also hard to break. “The constant motion of the canoe can get you. It’s a bit like PTSD. You’re always on tense, then it shuts off right away.”

Many people would think canoeing is calm, if not boring. Not Ranta. There is always a new relationship developing, from the 17 bear encounters, two mountain lions, even a moose calf in distress.

“I rescued a baby moose one time. Had him right inside the boat with us!”

He doesn’t shy away from the label of environmentalist, saying humans must learn better to co-exist with animals. We must also “stop sticking our nose” in nature’s business.

“Take what you need, and try to give back.”

Much of his diet comes by way of foraging along riverbanks and eating a lot of fish. A typical day sees him paddle between 15 and 20 hours, with another hour to explore the bush.

Spitzii doesn’t get a lot of Kibbles ’n Bits in his diet. He somehow remains a fairly spunky little guy with a strong independent streak.

Ranta often has to raise his voice to bring the dog back around. He also doesn’t take well to other dogs in Mitchell’s neighbourhood.

Maybe he’s protecting his spot on the canoe.

The next day (Aug. 31) shortly after 8 a.m., OPP officers responded to a call from Scheel Window & Door reporting the business had been broken into overnight.

The OPP is asking anyone with information on the break-and-enters to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.

Meanwhile, the Neighbourlink Fountain on Mary Street reports someone used crowbars on its doors last Wednesday evening in an attempt to find something to steal in various areas of the facility.

While there are no valuables nor money kept in the building to steal, the culprits did cause substantial damage.

Again the public response was anger as the churches-sponsored Neighbourlink Fountain is a drop-in centre for anyone who needs support in the community.

By attacking the centre, the perpetrators were targeting the most vulnerable in society.

Earlier in the week, two volunteers from

the Macnamara Field Naturalists found bird feeders along the popular Macnamara trails on the east side of town had been destroyed.

As well, vandals had knocked down some of the big rocks making up the historic limestone kiln by the MacLachlin Lumber Company in the 1860s, now situated along the trail.

The trail is maintained by volunteers, so the thoughtless acts again prompted public outrage.

Several residents also report having their vehicles broken into recently with such items as a laptop computer, ring, Iphone, tarps, jack, sleeping bag and even a drive shaft taken.

The investigation into thefts of vehicles and from vehicles in Arnprior and Renfrew has resulted in the arrest of the person believed responsible for the crimes, OPP report.

After an investigation that began which began in May, a 16-year-old male was arrested in Arnprior on Sept. 1 and is facing several charges.

OPP and Ottawa Police also held warrants for his arrest for failing to attend court, breaching conditions of an undertaking and being unlawfully at large.

The investigation began in May when reports of thefts from vehicles were made to Renfrew and Arnprior OPP officers. Items stolen include loose change, wallets, cell phones, laptop computers and other valuables from unlocked vehicles.

In August the thief or thieves began to smash windows or otherwise damage vehicles to gain access and steal property. Officers also investigated thefts of nine motor vehicles, all of which have been recovered.

At about noon on Thursday September, an OPP officer arrested the 16-year-old. Under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, he cannot be identified. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.

OPP Constable Mark O’Dacre is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Detachment Analytics Officer, Forensic Identification Services Unit and the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau Repeat Offender Enforcement Unit.

Arnprior bicyclist one of top MS ride fundraisers once again John Carter

For a small town, Arnprior certainly provides a great deal of support to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

And a good part of that is due to the efforts of Mel Porter. However, a modest Porter says he couldn’t do it without the “tremendous support” he receives from Arnprior residents and particularly his Legion comrades.

Despite being a senior citizen Porter continues to participate in the annual MS Ottawa to Cornwall bicycle ride each August as he had done for 15 years.

During that time he has raised about $99,000 for the MS Society of Canada’s efforts to find a cure for the dehabilitating disease and provide comforts for families dealing with it. This year Porter is again in the top-10 when it comes to individual pledges, raising $10,120.50.

“He’s such a wonderful man,” says the MS society’s director of community development Leanne Anderson. “He donates a lot of time fundraising for MS … he’s in the top 10 in fundraising every year.”

She said that Porter is so successful because he loves being involved in the community.

“He is so inspiring to everyone else … he’s an incredible person.”

Anderson notes that the 79-yearold is in the shape of 50-year-old, so has no problem riding from Ottawa to Cornwall and back. In fact, he’s one of the events most valuable tour leaders, she says.

He helps other riders when they

get into trouble with flat tires or other problems, she says, adding that he also promotes the ride by talking to people along the route about the cause.

Anderson says the ride has become a major success “thanks to people like Mel.” She explains the money raised ($540,000 and counting this year) in the ride goes toward research programs at places such as the Ottawa Hospital and services to enhance the quality of life for those with MS. There’s been some astounding findings in some of the studies, giving hope that could be some major breakthroughs, she added.

Porter gives credit for his fundraising success to the people of Arnprior “It’s amazing the support I get when sitting at No Frills or Tim Hortons (collecting donations),” he says.

It helps that he is well-known in town as the Arnprior Legion’s veterans services officer for the past eight years. As well, he’s used to collecting money for a good cause, having been the Legion’s poppy campaign chairman.

The Legion and its members are major contributors to his MS ride fundraising.

He got involved in the MS ride when looking for a cause to support. The ride fit the bill for Porter, an avid bicyclist.

He frequently bicycles to Ottawa and back, as well as up the trails and back roads to Glasgow Station and Renfrew. The only difficulty is crossing the highway, as the “traffic is crazy,” he notes.

His first MS ride earned him

a riding top for raising more than $1,000. In his second year, he received a pair of riding shorts and it grew from there.

While Porter is one of the older riders in the event, he notes that one of the participants is is in his 80s.

“He’s an amazing guy.”

It takes one to know one.

The McGregor Family of McGregor’s Produce of McNab-Braeside has been named one of 10 families who have earned the 2016 BMO Ontario Farm Family award.

One of the area’s most well-known families is earning fame province-wide.

McGregor’s Produce has been named one of 10 Ontario families to receive the 2016 BMO Ontario Farm Family award.

“It certainly is an honour to be given the award and to be one of the 10 in Ontario,” said Jim McGregor, who is the fourth generation of McGregors to farm on the land. His children, Ian and Cameron, are now the fifth generation on the land.

“It’s humbling to be chosen.”

The families are being honoured for their dedication to Ontario’s agriculture sector and the rural way of life.

He feels the award is a chance to shine the light on farming.

“In our business it’s positive to get some exposure,” said Jim. “It also makes you feel good that people in the community think you are contributing.”

The farm started with 200 acres of land, which dates back to when Jim’s great grandfather and great uncle moved from Beckwith to McNab Township in 1856.

At that time they erected a log home close to where they later built the current stone home. Jim’s father and grandfather were both born in the home.

Ian and his wife Deb now live in the homestead.

McGregor’s Produce is located in McNab-Braeside on Lochwinnoch Road and has grown to include 1,000 acres of owned and leased land. This year 1,500 apple trees were planted.

McGregor’s has 14 fresh produce stands throughout Renfrew County and participated in four farmer’s markets. Their produce includes strawberries, raspberries, beans, tomatoes, corn and more.

Mary Harris, account manager at Renfrew’s Bank of Montreal, nominated the family for the award.

“When I think of a family who exudes all of the traits and attributes that contribute to rural life, I think of them right away. They are very active in so many charities,” said Harris.

“They really are involved in the community and they have so much depth in the community.”

The family has been involved with a number of farm and church clubs over the years and also donate produce and money throughout the Valley to several local food banks and senior homes.

Harris also thinks the McGregors work very well together as extended family and says it’s nice to see the different generations work together.

“They are the perfect farm family because they are ambassadors for agriculture.”

Harris also points out that for the fifth year in a row Renfrew County has had a winning family.

“We are the only county in Ontario to be able to boast a winner for each of the five years,” said Harris.

Past local winners include the Bromley family of Spruce Briar Jerseys, the Stewart and Vera McBride family of CMcB Holsteins, the Reid family of Davdonest Holsteins, the Alex and Betty Briscoe family of Briscoelea Holsteins.

“We have a lot of good farms in Renfrew,” said Jim. “A lot of farm families are involved in the community and interested in both sustainable and environmentally friendly farming.”

The McGregors will be formally recognized at the International Plowing Match Expo in the Town of Minto (Harriston) on Sept. 24.

Eighteen members of the family who are involved in the farm will make the trip for the presentation.

“It’s going to be great,” said Jim. “There will be a presentation and a lunch under the tent. It will be fun and nice to have all the family there.”

On the basis of these Provincial requirements, the Town of Arnprior initiated a process leading to the preparation of a proposed updated Official Plan in mid-2015. The process leading to the preparation of the proposed updated Official Plan is considered to be a comprehensive review as defined by the Provincial Policy Statement (2014).

Section 16(1) of the Planning Act indicates in part the following: “An Official Plan shall contain goals, objectives and policies established primarily to manage and direct physical change and the effects on the social, economic, built and natural environment of the municipality.” On this basis, the purpose of the proposed updated Official Plan is to provide direction and a policy framework for managing growth and land use decisions over the planning period to 2036.

A further intent of the proposed updated Official Plan for the Town of Arnprior is in part to: 1. Ensure that all land use planning decisions are based on the principles of wise growth management that supports the Town’s unique character, diversity, civic identity, natural heritage and cultural heritage; 2. Support a prosperous local economy by providing opportunities for economic development, and investment and diversification in the Town in a manner that fosters entrepreneurialism, competitiveness, and a positive and attractive business environment; 3. Protect and enhance the character of existing neighbourhoods in the Town and to maintain them as diverse, liveable, safe, healthy, thriving and attractive communities; 4. Support all forms of intensification in key areas to support the efficient use of infrastructure, the many retail stores and services that exist and to provide additional housing options to existing and future residents; and, 5. Ensure that an adequate supply of land and housing choices are available for present and future residents of all ages, abilities, incomes and household sizes.

The proposed updated Official Plan applies to the entire Town, save and except for the lands that are owned by the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada. As a result, no key map is provided.

Any person may attend the public open house to review and ask questions about the proposed updated Official Plan and attend the public meeting to make representations in respect of the proposed updated Official Plan.

Promise of a new beginning September brings so many changes to our lives it is sometimes hard to process them all.

It’s a new beginning this week for students as they hit the books for another year and while for some it is the most exciting time ever, for others it can be quite scary.

In a recent interview one local principal gave out two key pieces of advice for students: get involved and stay positive.

Nowadays there are so many extracurriculars to do before and after school it is a balancing act to pick and choose what you would like to do.

But in today’s world, adaptability and a wide range of skills, including how to work well in a team setting, are keys to getting ahead. So getting involved, whether it be sports and the arts or technology clubs and student government, is more important than ever.

Students need to experience a variety of different perspectives if they are to get the most out of school life.

Students can learn so much from these adventures as they meet new friends, learn to balance schedules and priorities, and begin to understand how they can make a difference in society.

To the Editor: This letter is to give credit to the organizers of the White Pine Festival.

We had visitors from southwestern Ontario this past weekend (Aug. 27-28) who had never been to Arnprior. Since they have young children (8 and 5), we decided to take in the White Pine Festival on Saturday.

We drove to the Curling Club to park and first took in the train display, which was just fantastic. So much to see and the boys really enjoyed getting on the bike and making the train go.

After that we hopped on the Giant Tiger train to the ball park

For students going back to class in September, it’s a chance to start with a clean slate. While it is often difficult to stay positive in this sometimes cynical and often frightening new world, it can be done by embracing new experiences and helping others do the same.

Show you care. Small gestures can mean a lot. It would be a better world if there were more please and thank you and people offering to open the door for you when you have your hands full.

When was the last time that you made the extra effort to be kind to your neighbour or helped someone down the street.

As the leaves on the trees start to turn colour and students move into new grades, we are reminded that change is inevitable.

Sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith off of a cliff, figuratively speaking, of course, to make a difference in your life and that of others. So take advantage of a new beginning, become involved in your school and community life and make a positive impact on your fellow citizens.

The world awaits the promise of a new generation. Don’t disappoint.

where we spent the next several hours. The bouncy castles, zip line, old cars/trucks and the motorcycles kept those boys enthralled.

The Heartbeats were playing when we stopped for lunch at Dan’s Dogs (always excellent) and took our food across the street to the little beach area and sat under a tree in the shade.

Of course, we all had to put our feet in the water and the boys were hunting for rocks and shells. All while listening to excellent music and even Elvis made an appearance!

Finally, everyone was tired and hot, so we got back on the GT train and caught a ride back up to our car.

and this is not a criticism, was that they should have had more people driving the train and looking after the people riding it.

I believe the same wonderful woman on the back of it keeping everyone safe was there all day. She was burnt to a crisp and looked like she had heat exhaustion.

When we wanted to head back to the car, the train operator was going on a lunch break (much needed), which lasted about 40 minutes. Maybe next time the driver and ‘caboose’ person should be relieved every two hours or so?

Cavanagh construction in downtown workers helpful, caring To the Editor:

Re: Cavanagh Construction I am sending this letter in support of the staff members of Cavanagh Construction who have been so obliging and helpful over

the summer while working on our downtown core.

I am in downtown Arnprior usually 5-6 days a week and have yet to find and unfriendly person on their

staff.

They have made this large development easier for more comfortable for me and I am sure for many others. I have been met by a smiling

Sept. 21 is the day declared by the United Nations as the International Day of Peace.

Over the few years that we have had an Arnprior and Area Chapter of the Canadian Peace Initiative, we have had wonderful support and encouragement around this time when taking the opportunity to publicize, address and commemorate efforts to build peaceful ways of living and working together locally, nationally and globally.

Letters and articles have received thoughtful responses.

We want to continue the dialogue this year under the theme ‘Weapons to Art: Transcending the Past’.

Look for a display at the Arnprior Public Library showcasing artists in war-torn countries who have converted weapons to art or tools to transform the message of violence into a voice for peaceful living.

As well, a one-minute film will be shown in various locations and publicized in posters put up around the community.

Additionally, we are writing two letters.

In this first letter, we want to recognize all those who have served in the military; a second letter will give examples of how peace is being imagined by a variety of leaders, countries and scientists.

To start our yearly conversation, we would like to thank, honour and respect each military member, who has, over the last 150 years, offered their services to protect and emulate the ideals of being a Canadian.

We believe that an ongo-

ing commitment to peaceful means of resolving differences, acceptance of diversity and fair distribution of resources and opportunity honours the values of our past and present military who lost their lives, innocence or comrades in times of conflict.

Many have given their lives, and others continued to or yet serve, putting demands on their families while they wait for their son, father, brother, daughter, mother or sister to come home and resume their lives together.

What does it take to make Prior-ites shake their booty?

To the Editor:

As avid dancers who retired to White Lake, my husband and I were interested in opportunities to dance in Arnprior or nearby towns to avoid the drive to Ottawa where there is an active dance scene.

It quickly became obvious to us that - along with some amazing fiddling - step dancing was a big thing locally.

Square and round dancing classes for couples could be found in Carleton Place, and line dancing and Zumba lessons (both preferred by ladies) are offered in some Valley towns.

There are also two dance studios in Arnprior and in Pembroke that offer a range of dance lessons to both youngsters and adults.

We, too, as dance aficionados, offer partner basic lessons.

One can dance at legions, other halls, stag and does, and wedding receptions.

There are also social dances held occasionally, such as Cobden, and Horton Township’s monthly fallthrough-spring Friday night dances (which also include some square dancing), or charity fundraising dances at the Nick Smith Centre and some church halls.

For example, when the Sting Rays band hits town, the dance floor’s guaranteed to be full.

There are many opportunities, so what’s my point?

We’ve noticed that at most of the dances we’ve attended - and yes, we do crash stag and does - the dancers out on the floor are predominately of the boomer generation.

The millennials do not seem to know how to dance beyond the old ‘hang and hug belly-rubbers’.

We’re often disappointed and concerned when we watch young women get up, hanging onto their drinks, often sloshing them on the dance floor as it’s safer than leaving them unattended at the tables where, heaven forbid, some lout might lace one’s drink with a roofie (Rohypnol, aka the date-rape

drug).

The young men tend to hover together, drink in hand, watching the girls.

Occasionally one might muster up the courage to ask for a dance.

Sometimes entire mixed groups will do a kind of group boogaloo.

If you’re really into dancing though, the sticky drink puddles and residue on the floors is a big deterrent.

Surely there’s a better way?

It begs the question: is social dancing going the way of the Dodo bird?

In other parts of the world, line dancing for both men and women continues to be a very popular thing.

For instance, many bars in the States offer line and country/western partner dances that are wellattended by young people in their requisite jeans/cowboy boots/hats ‘uniform’; were that it was the same case here!

Fred Astaire and Arthur Murray studios teaching social dances still abound, but the names alone indicate you’d need to be a boomer to even know who those men were.

And the classes can be expensive after they get you started.

Hip hop is popular now amongst the youngsters, but what will they be dancing in their 50s and beyond?

As ladies know, there is nothing more pleasurable than watching a man dance or dancing with him, so you’d think men would be motivated to learn since it’s a great way to meet and attract the opposite sex, yet we suspect men’s lack of interest plays a role in social dance’s decline.

TV shows such as Dancing With the Stars, and So You Think You Can Dance would indicate there is still much interest amongst the younger generation, so perhaps the question should be rephrased: are your parent’s and grandparent’s dances passé, out of style, oldfashioned?

Dance instructor Wendy and Dennis Tessier of White Lake are wondering if social dance has a future in the Upper Ottawa Valley. They hope so.

As dancers, we know the music of today, be it country or modern, still comprises latin and social beats; think cha cha, rumba, foxtrot, waltz and jive.

Polka is still a thriving thing, we hope, with those of Kashub descent in Wilno and Killaloe, and surrounds.

But is it only folks of a ‘certain age” doing these dances? Is there hope for our children and children’s children to enjoy the pleasures that dancing together brings?

I don’t know if social dance is still taught in grade and high schools, but if not, we’re willing to volunteer teach.

Why not have girls and boys learn how to ask, accept and dance some basic steps together?

It’s a skill that goes beyond just dancing. The rewards are many: motor skills, memory improve-

ment, physical and mental exercise, a natural anti-depressant, a joyful activity, and helpful in relationship-building. It’s a skill one can start at any age and use one’s entire lifetime. It bridges generations.

Some people sign up to be able to perform a nice dance at their weddings, but will it lead to a lifelong love of dance?

To the young people in the area, we’d like nothing better than you prove us wrong about the future of social dance.

Under Nick Smith Centre’s sponsorship, we have offered a free dance class recently with dances suitable to partners of any age, so time will tell whether Arnprior responds, but naturally we hope not to be disappointed.

At the recent White Pine Festival, there were many bands and solo acts who were phenomenal,

their music rhythmically irresistible, yet very few people (perhaps five) got up to move to the music with the exception of a local line dancing troupe who did put on a nice show. But what a shame. What does it take to make Prior-ites shake their booty?

As humourist Dave Barry said: “Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.”

And I would add: without your drink in hand and with a few basic steps in your ‘arsenal’.

Some of us have had the privilege of meeting many serving military members, some of whom are members of the Canadian Peace Initiative.

There are families in the Valley who have generations of family who have served in the military and can describe how the military culture has changed.

Both groups have seen how the forces’ experience changes depending on the politics of the day.

Regardless, our soldiers are our protectors.

They loyally undertake the directives our politicians determine.

We, the citizens, need to take what we ask of them seriously. Is it moral?

to the benefit of all involved? Is it creating safe and resilient connections with the people we affect?

To do anything less is to sacrifice our family and friends in the military for a destructive and futile cause.

Finally, we need to respect our military.

Even some of those in the peace movement have negative stereo-

types of our military, but no one deserves to be labeled and judged.

Our forces are a diverse and varied population.

They voluntarily take on intense demands that involve the whole person. They deserve our thanks and respect.

Those who are deployed deserve support to come home and proudly put down their banner as soldiers

and be allowed to be civilians and family members.

May peace be our common goal.

Arnprior Scouting to hold registration night Sept. 19

The 2nd Arnprior Scouts are one of two youth groups benefitting from the Arnprior Lionettes major draw of the year. The Arnprior Scouting and Guiding movement received $300 each from the draw. Presenting the donation to Arnprior Scouts group commissioner Brian Dougherty and Scout Sydney Dougherty are Peggy Frechette, Sally Bromley, Joan McConnell and Monique Lynch. The Scouts are holding a registration night Monday, Sept. 19 at Walter Zadow Public School, where the Scouts, Ciubs and Beaver groups meet each week.

The Arnprior Scouting movement is gearing up for another season with a registration night Monday, Sept.

19.

Anyone, boys and girls, interested in joining the Scouts troop, Cub pack or Beaver colony can drop by Walter Zadow School between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Prospective members can attend two meetings free to find out if Scouting is for them.

The ages are 5 to 7 for Beavers, 8 to 10 for Cubs and 11 to 14 for Scouts. The cost is $200 for the year, but subsidies are available for those who need them.

Arnprior Scouting is led by group commissioner Brian Dougherty and group treasurer Rod Boileau The Scouting movement can always use more volunteers and adult leaders.

The pressure will return to normal once the flushing is completed.

• If you detect discoloured (red) water, turn off your tap for 20 to 30 minutes; this should allow work crews enough time to complete the flushing. When work crews have left the area, turn on one COLD water tap for a few minutes to flush the system.

• Discoloured water may occur in close proximity to the watermain flushing or many blocks, even kilometre’s away, depending on various factors such as their supply main size, location and demand flows. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the location and extent of the customers that may receive discoloured water.

• Residents who live in the areas being flushed may want to collect containers of water for drinking and cooking, each day before the flushing program starts.

• We recommend that you do not drink or wash laundry with red water.

The Municipality of Mississippi Mills (the Municipality) has undertaken a planning process to assess the short-term rated capacity of Wells 7 and 8, building upon recommendations from the related Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Master Plan (Almonte Ward) completed in 2012. As part of the process, background information was reviewed and alternative solutions concepts were developed and evaluated based on several criteria, including impacts to the natural, social cultural and economic environments. A hydrogeological evaluation was also completed to assist in determining the preferred alternative. Furthermore, as part of the Class EA process for reviewing the rated capacity of Wells 7 and 8, public comment during the evaluation of alternative solutions was requested. This project is being carried out in accordance with the Terms of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) process, which is approved under the Environmental Assessment Act.

TAKE NOTICE that the Municipality of Mississippi Mills held a meeting with respect to the five year review process for its Community Official Plan on Thursday, June 23, 2016. A second Special Meeting of Council to discuss growth projections and land needs and to discuss the revisions that may be required will be held on Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 at the Municipal Office, 3131 Old Perth Road. The board estimates more than 265 children in the Arnprior region have a constitutional right to a French Catholic education.

“We are happy with the interest shown so far,” Bourbonnais said.

The CECCE is also planning to include a daycare for 36 children at the new school.

Don’t be impatient: be safe around school buses With a new school year upon us, the Canada Safety Council is reminding drivers to be extra cautious as school buses return to the roads.

Despite it being an annual occurrence, the return of school buses often brings about episodes of impatience, confusion regarding some of the rules of the road and a spike in fatalities and injuries among young pedestrians from September to November.

SAFETY TIPS

With this context in mind, here are a few tips to ensure that everyone, from you to the littlest bus rider to the driver getting them to school, is staying safe on the roads: • Leave yourself a bit of extra time to get wherever you’re going. Being in a rush is no excuse for disobeying the rules of the road and endangering the lives of others. • When a bus has its arm extended and flashing lights, stop. It’s the law. Do not proceed until the lights are turned off, as there may still be children coming or attempting

to cross the street. In most cases, traffic in both directions must stop unless separated by a median. • Slow down in school zones. Be vigilant and careful in residential areas where children are present as well. Moving slowly and predictably can help children feel more at ease and make them less likely to try and rush. • Avoid doing manoeuvres like three-point turns and U-turns in school zones. Children are often unfamiliar or simply not expecting these, which can cause them to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as a result. • Always obey crossing guards and signage, especially as it relates to pedestrians and school zones. • Give cyclists a wide berth. Many jurisdictions require a minimum distance of one metre. Additionally, shoulder check before opening your door to ensure you don’t accidentally open it in a cyclist’s path. • If you’re able, choose public transportation or an active form of transportation. If you’re in a position to leave the car at home,

the roads are made that much more safer for its more vulnerable users.

Additionally, for parents driving their children to school, be sure to never let your child out of the car when they’ll be getting off into traffic. Make sure they’re stepping out onto a sidewalk or away from the flow of traffic.

Also, consider driving a block or so away from the school and walking with your child, in order to reduce congestion around the school area.

This will also make the bus drivers’ jobs a bit easier.

Summer learning ‘packed with fun and innovation’

Hundreds of students participated in a fun-packed, innovative program of activities at Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) schools this summer.

More than 200 students enrolled in RCCDSB’s summer program to boost literacy and numeracy.

The students, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 7, attended classes at St. John XXIII Catholic Elementary School in Arnprior, St. John Bosco in Barry’s Bay, St. Anthony’s in Chalk River, St. James in Eganville, Holy Name in Pembroke, St. Francis of Assisi in Petawawa and St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew.

“I was thrilled to be part of such a dynamic and innovative summer school program this summer,” said principal Amy Sicoli, who led the program with principal Clint Young.

“Because of the talents and experience of our amazing teachers, our program provided students with the opportunity to boost their literacy and numeracy confidence and skills.”

Sicoli noted the program’s innovative math lessons sparked creativity in students and challenged their thinking and curiosity around math learning and problem-solving.

“The integration of 21st-century learning and a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) was evident at all our sites,” Sicoli said.

“Inquiry-based learning was also a pivotal part of our summer program, from our youngest Kindergarten children asking questions about the world around them to our intermediate students delving into self-directed e-learning,” she added.

The summer program also tested a gamebased learning project for mathematics that was funded by the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE).

“We used our summer CODE funding to assist with creating, implementing and evaluating a mathematics diagnostic test that can be used in primary and junior math,” said Dave Noble, the principal of SEF. DIAGNOSTIC TEST

Noble said the diagnostic was tested at Holy Name and St. Francis of Assisi schools by two teachers, Chantelle Spence and Rebecca Clarke, who had taken extra professional development in order to implement the diagnostic. The diagnostic was designed by the K-12 curriculum co-ordinator Lynn Denault and implemented by her and coordinator Tracy Joyce.

“Our goal is to have an RCCDSB math diagnostic that will help educators to find gaps in student learning in mathematics,” Noble said.

“Once the gaps have been found, the goal will be to implement math-based games and activities to help close those gaps. We also hope to increase communication with our parents so that mathematics activities at

home will become as common as reading to your child before bed.”

The CODE project also included promotion of healthy living for our students, Noble said. Participants were involved in a variety of healthy living activities such as yoga, a field trip to the Best Western Hotel’s fitness facility in Pembroke and field trips to the grocery store.

100 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED

More than 100 high school students also participated in e-learning courses, which included Grade 12 Religion and Grade 10 Civics and Careers. The summer courses allowed more room in students’ regular school timetables so that they can reach ahead to take Grade 11 courses, or get an early start in preparing for their careers or post-secondary education.

Young noted that the summer e-learning courses allowed students some flexibility, although they had to meet deadlines and complete each course within 18 days. “Kids are so tech savvy and the teachers are there if help is needed,” Young said.

Also, the teachers could track students’ progress. “It was a very successful program,” he added. “Students did very well.”

Another program highlight was a sneak peek for RCCDSB’s Grade 4 students at the Board’s two high schools. Forty-nine students participated in the Jaguar Camp at Saint Joseph’s in Renfrew from July 4 to 7 while 30 students attended Crusader Camp at Bishop Smith High School in Pembroke from July 11 to 14.

The students had two sessions each of sports, science, robotics/music and outdoor education.

Young noted that two groups were very instrumental in the success of the summer school program.

“They are the Board’s office staff, who handled the administrative responsibilities, and the Renfrew County Joint Transportation Committee, which arranged buses for the students. We have great partnerships and we really want to say a huge thank you,” Young added.

The summer learning experience also extended to more than 50 educators from across the RCCDSB who participated in a voluntary full-day math Professional Development session on Aug. 29 in Pembroke.

K–12 Curriculum coordinators Denault and Joyce facilitated the learning for an enthusiastic Kindergarten–Grade 8 audience.

The day was an opportunity to provide new strategies and practical ideas that educators could add to their repertoires for the upcoming school year, explained Denault.

“I am always impressed by the dedication of staff to continue to implement the most current practices in their classrooms to support their students,” she added.

Predictions for what could be a difficult Fall for wildlife

With a blink of an eye summer has slipped by.

Bird nests are now nothing more than empty egg cartons and their makers have fallen mute and will remain silent until next spring. Overhead, while a million stars burn brightly against the black curtain of moonless nights, peeps and cheeps tell us that warblers and thrushes are winging their way south.

The severe drought that held much of southern Ontario hostage this summer will likely have ramifications extending well beyond this year. Areas with shallow soil were particularly hard hit.

While deciduous trees that turned colour prematurely or dropped their leaves will likely recover next year, Eastern White Cedars that turned brown are undoubtedly lost.

Other plants either failed to produce fruit or produced lower than normal amounts.

In many areas, raspberries, Blackberries, Elderberries, and Pin and Choke Cherries are devoid of fruit. This will likely have serious consequences for Black Bears because these animals fatten for winter by devouring carbohydrate-rich foods. While lean bears might survive the winter, especially if temperatures are favourable, they’ll have a difficult time next spring.

After leaving their dens in April, bears are confronted with a paucity of food for many weeks, and during this time their fat provides much of the nutrition that keeps them alive.

Many White Spruce and White Pines

failed to produce cones this summer.

While a lack of conifer seeds may not affect bears, it does determine what types of birds will be present this winter.

Red and White-winged crossbills are major consumers of pine and spruce seeds, respectively.

Thus, these fascinating birds with their odd, name-giving bills could well be absent from local woods this winter.

The lack of cones might also be bad news for Red Squirrels. These vociferous rodents stash piles of cones under logs and tree roots, and these stores are dug up and consumed in winter. Only the seeds housed inside the cones are eaten, and a pile of scales on top of snow is a sure sign that a Red Squirrel has eaten well.

A paucity of cones could affect the winter survival of these squirrels, which also store mushrooms after drying them on tree limbs.

But not all trees and shrubs are devoid of fruit. Bumper crops adorn White Ash, Black Cherry, Wild Raisin, and a few other species.

Scarlet Tanagers, Red-eyed Vireos, Blue Jays, and other birds are currently devouring the cherries so there’ll likely not be many left by the time snow arrives. However, if the

The drought may also affect animals in other ways. Many beaver ponds currently display low water levels. If a severely cold winter descends on us, some ponds may freeze to the bottom, spelling disaster for their occupants.

Beavers don’t hibernate; they depend on water under the ice for access to their food stores. All of this, of course, is speculation, and time will tell the true tale.

Even if a happy ending is not in store for some of our wild neighbours, it will simply be Nature’s way.

Walk on the Wild Side with naturalist Michael Runtz Sept. 18 If walking in the woods isn’t something that you would ordinarily enjoy doing on your own, then there couldn’t be a better opportunity than following the lead of Michael Runtz.

High Lonesome Nature Reserve has been a favourite spot of Runtz’s for years, before it was donated to the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) in 2012. This 200-acre property lies within a wetland com-

The White Lake Stewardship Plan Steering Committee is hosting the second community open house to discuss the state of White Lake from noon to 4 p.m. at the Stewart Community Centre in Pakenham.

The White Lake Community has come together to create a Lake Stewardship Plan in collaboration with Watersheds Canada and French Planning Services. A steering committee has been formed with representatives from various stakeholder groups including the four municipalities directly influenced by White Lake, provincial agencies, stewardship groups and other stakeholders.

Lake stewardship is vital to maintaining the health and future integrity of a lake, say organizers. It involves the collaboration of the lake community and stakeholders in taking actions, such as implementing programs and practices to maintain and enhance water quality and responsible usage for the benefit of all.

A report entitled White Lake State of the Lake 2016 has recently been released and can be viewed or downloaded from the White Lake Preservation Project Stewardship Plan webpage (wlpp.ca).

The State of the Lake Report is a document summarizing all aspects

of the environmental and social characteristics of the lake and its watershed. The report will provide a snapshot of the lake’s environment, land uses and development levels, and its boating and recreational conditions.

Ottawa Senators’ hockey fans benefited from two players visiting Arnprior last week, but so did the local hockey association.

The Hometown Tour saw up-and-coming defenceman Cody Ceci and the team’s newest member Mike Blunden stop by to greet fans and sign autographs in the Canadian Tire parking lot on Aug. 29. The place was brimming with activity. Kids playing road hockey, little ones playing in an inflatable rink, a shot accuracy game and more.

The NHL club also invited along Arnprior Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) to set up a table next to theirs, and to raffle off a signed jersey. The jersey of the Senators top goal scorer Mike Hoffman’s resulted in 120 tickets sold, with proceeds going to the AMHA. “It was an amazing turn-out and we can’t thank the Ottawa Senators organization enough for coming to Armprior,” said Scott Thomson, AMHA president. “The look on the children’s face when they got to meet Cody Ceci and Mike Blunden was priceless and I’m positive that some of the moms were happy to meet them too.”

The winner of the jersey was Cliff Menzies.

Ceci enjoyed his visit to Arnprior and, earlier in the day, Pembroke.

“It’s really important to give back to the fans,” he said. “They travel all the way to Kanata to see us, so it’s important to get out and see them.”

He is also optimistic for the upcoming season, after a season that ended with no playoff berth.

“I think we have a good team this year. It’s definitely a different look with all new coaches and some new players,” Ceci said.

The final two games for the Packers preseason were losses as facing the Ottawa West Golden Knights proved to be a challenge.

The back-to-back matches up started on Aug. 30 in Ottawa. The teams stayed even for the first period, but the Golden Knights pulled ahead in the second to win by a final score of 4-1.

Alex Caparelli scored the lone goal for the Packers.

The teams returned to the ice the next day in Arnprior and this game was closeer but Ottawa West ultimately won 6-5.

Arnprior players help Valley team win baseball title Bishop to be

honoured Saturday

Five Arnprior players played key roles as Renfrew Minor Baseball’s Renfrew 1 Majors team proved that dedication pays off this season.

After a slow start, the team practiced hard and was rewarded with the Ottawa Valley championship in the season-ending tournament. The team played five games in a day that stretched from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., outlasting teams from Renfrew, Barry’s Bay, Pembroke and Petawawa.

The team was comprised of both rookies and veterans from Renfrew, Arnprior, Cobden and Calabogie.

The Valley’s golden girl, Melissa Bishop, will be honoured at a homecoming parade and dinner this Saturday, Sept. 10 in Eganville.

The parade for the runner who set a Canadian record at the Olympics is set for 1:30 p.m., followed by an open air reception at Legion Memorial Field.

Local schools are invited to participate in the parade and reception by making posters or messages for the Olympian.

Anyone participating is being advised to be at Legion Field no later than 12:30 p.m.

The dinner, which costs $85 a ticket, will be held at the Eagle’s Nest at 7 p.m.

All proceeds from the dinner will form part of a community gift for Bishop.

Meanwhile, the County of Renfrew has proposed a role model award to be presented in Bishop’s name.

Calabogie Trail Ride dedicated to fallen rider Staff

This year’s Calabogie Boogie trail ride has been dedicated to the memory of a wellknown rider who died in a crash in the Calabogie area this spring.

Blake MacMillan of Ottawa died at the age of 36 on May 1 in an off-road motorcycling collision in the Calabogie Highlands.

The annual two day off-road race is being

held Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11 in the hills and trails around Calabogie. The race has again attracted the maximum 200 riders.

The Calabogie Boogie is touted as Ontario’s premiere ride event.

Just prior to his death, he led a novice skills camp for riders in Shawville.

A famous line from an ABBA song that demonstrates nothing less than the start of Vicki Brittle’s musical talent and interest. Since the age of 2 when she began to sing, she has yet to stop.

Making singing not only a passion, but a dedication at a young age, she began singing lessons with Arnprior Community Choir musical director Lisa Webber, studying

After developing beneficial and proper vocal abilities throughout the time of being Webber’s student, Brittle moved on to begin writing and singing on her own, and introducing herself to different genres.

tre. The joy on her face was beyond contagious as she shared the song of her country with fellow members of Arnprior, and visitors from all over.

Although the cold weather didn’t bug her, she began getting busy with music in all seasons, from bonfires and gigs to music school organized events. Once music became an all-around-the-year thing, Brittle knew she was comfortable being hand in hand with music 24/7.

Through the bumps in the road, many learning experiences and personal discoveries, she has written and recorded her first E.P (Extended Play album) with a heavy heart and released her first single called ‘Candy’.

With a heart built at home, Brittle is holding her E.P release party in Braeside at the Sand Point Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 16. She will be releasing and selling ($10) her whole album to the attendees the night of the release, and releasing the official E.P on iTunes Sept. 17.

Highland dance competition grows by leaps and bounds A large number of dancers from all over the region attended the Caitlin Stewart Memorial Highland Dance Competition Aug. 28 in Arnprior. Caitlin must have been looking over the contest as it rained all around Arnprior, but not in town during the event. Baptist summer camp focuses on finding strength in God Elgin Street Baptist Church in Arnprior hosted another successful day camp again this summer.

Attended by about 45 children from Arnprior and across the Ottawa Valley, the camp provided the kids with opportunities to take part in fun games, adventurous drama acts, artistic crafts, and tasty snacks, as well as a time to sing silly but memorable camp songs.

Pastor Eric Green reports that this year the camp revolved around the theme of Babylon, which focused on the biblical story of Daniel’s encounters in the land of exile.

“Through the daily chapels, the children learned about how Daniel found

strength in God, and how we can find that same strength in the same God: Jesus Christ,” he said.

Pastor Green noted that the kids were excited to learn the memory verses and were still reciting them on ‘Camp Sunday’, which was held July 24.

Many of the parents attended the service to see their children perform the camp songs, hear the memory verses, and listen to an inspiring sermon encouraging all to trust and turn to God. “Elgin Street Baptist gives glory to God for a great week, great weather and a great time with the children,” Pastor Green concluded.

Community choir seeks new members Right, Lisa Webber leads the Arnprior Community Choir in its 25th Anniversary Concert at the Christian Education Centre back in May. The choir is seeking new members and will hold the second of two introductory rehearsals Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Arnprior Legion. The hot sun was beating down on my sister Audrey and me.

We were on our backs in the long grass watching the soft white clouds form and reform in the mostly blue sky above.

It was a favourite pastime for me. Not so much for Audrey, who went along with it because she knew how much I liked to pretend the clouds were little dogs, someone with long flowing white hair, or any number of things I could muster up in my young imagination.

But that day was different. Audrey talked to me just as if I was her best friend Iva. Rarely did my older sister ever include me in serious chat. After all she was years older than I was.

But that afternoon, it was like she had to get off her mind what she was thinking about. “I wish I could see the future,” she said softly. I knew there was more to come. “I would like to know what I will be doing when I am finished at the Northcote School.”

I looked over at her face. Her eyes were closed.

She wasn’t looking at the clouds above us. “I really want to be a nurse. Or a teacher.”

I knew she would make a wonderful teacher.

Didn’t she spend hours with me showing me how to knit, embroider, print in my scribbler, and go over my spelling?

And as far as being a nurse was concerned, I didn’t know one living soul in all of Renfrew County who had a kinder heart. She would make a wonderful nurse. And I could picture her in her uniform, with a nurse’s cap on her brown hair, and a pin on her collar to show the world she had graduated.

Audrey let out the longest sigh. I wanted to get into the conversation and so I reminded her of what our mother always said: “You can do anything you want to do, if you want to do it badly enough.”

I thought that would make Audrey feel better, because she certainly didn’t seem too happy to me. But what I said didn’t seem to make her feel any better.

And I told her I thought she should be a teacher and come back to the Northcote School when Miss Crosby was too old to teach anymore.

“That will never happen,” she said in a voice I could hardly hear.

“Well, what about being a nurse? Now, it’s the last thing I would want to be. I hate blood! But, Audrey, you would make a wonderful nurse.”

She opened her eyes MARY COOK and looked at the soft white clouds moving in the sky, and I was pretty sure I could see that she was trying awfully hard not to cry.

Why she would be feeling so sad on such a beautiful day was beyond me!

“No, that will never happen,” she said, in a voice so low I could hardly hear her. I wanted to know why.

After all, she was smart and I thought she could be anything she wanted to be, and if she wanted to be either a nurse or a teacher, all she would have to do, is go out and do it.

So I asked her why. What would stop her from being either?

“Because there is no money. It costs money to be a nurse, and we could never afford to send me to Teacher’s College. No, I’m afraid I’ll never be either.”

Now, there really were tears. Just gently rolling down her cheeks and into her hair. I knew if I reached out and touched her, it would cause a flood, so I stayed perfectly still and waited for Audrey to say something else.

Finally, there was a big sigh, and she brushed the back of her hand across her eyes. And she pointed to a huge white cloud above us, and said she thought it looked like someone riding a horse.

I couldn’t see anything that resembled a horse, but I said nothing. Audrey had returned, and that was all that mattered.

But long after we got up and went to do chores, I thought about what Audrey had said. Would that be my fate too?

Was I destined to live out my life on a farm out in the country? And would my sister end up like so many other young girls who finished public school, working at cleaning houses for the rich people in Renfrew or married to another farmer? Was that all could happen to a child of the Depression?

I knew I would not have the answer that day. I knew, like my sister Audrey, only time would determine what

Building on the success of the past five seniors’ expos, the sixth annual North Lanark Seniors’ Expo today (Thursday, Sept. 8) promises to be a great success, say organizers.

The Expo will be delivering the kind of information that seniors, their families and caregivers seek, they note.

The seniors’ Expo offers a onestop showcase of goods and services available to seniors in North Lanark.

Last year 73 exhibitors saw about 615 attendees come through the expo.

The theme this year is ‘Be Prepared’ – for emergencies, changes in health, retirement, any changes that may happen as you age.

Such preparations include having emergency kits handy, writing wills, and having decided on Power of Attorney designated for property and personal care.

The popular ‘Speaker’s Corner’ will again feature experts present-

ing on topics important to seniors and the services available to assist them.

The hours have been changed this year in an effort to better serve the community, including those who work. The Expo opens at noon and runs to 6 p.m. at the Almonte Community Centre, 182 Bridge St. Food is available for purchase.

This Expo is part of lead organizer Mills Community Support’s commitment to building an agefriendly North Lanark.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness, Karen Scobie announces the passing of her husband, the love of her life Gary, on August 31st, 2016. Gary passed away peacefully at their home in Sebring, Florida after a lengthy illness. Gary will be greatly missed by both of their families. “The Scob” will be fondly remembered by his friends in Ontario, Canada as well as in Sebring, Florida. Ottawa Valley Music Festival presents ‘Classicism Par Excellence’ The Ottawa Valley Music Festival’s final concert of the season takes place in Pembroke on Sunday, Sept. 18, when the festival presents a program of Haydn and William Boyce.

Classicism Par Excellence will feature the Ottawa Valley Music Festival Chorus as well as guests Danielle Vaillancourt, Jessica Belanger, Kathleen Radke, Kevin Myers, and Jean-Sebastien Kennedy.

Vaillancourt, a mezzo-soprano, studied in Toronto and Montreal, where she was awarded the prestigious Prix avec Distinction for her outstanding Masters recital. As well as performances in Canada, the Renfrew native has performed in Greece at the Maria Callas Grand Prix Opera Competition in Athens, and singing the title roles in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges.

Soprano Radke is one of the brightest new stars on the Canadian opera scene, and no stranger to the Ottawa Valley Music Festival. Originally from Renfrew, Radke studied at Wilfrid Laurier and McMaster, and was a member of the Festival Choir of the European Music Festival, performing in Stuttgart, Bonn, Athens and Berlin.

Soprano Belanger is a graduate of the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, where she studied voice performance with tenor Stefano Algieri.

After going on to complete her Education degree at Nipissing University, Belanger began her career as an elementary music specialist and currently teaches in Renfrew.

Since 2009 she has held the position of director of the Renfrew Children’s/Youth Chorus and from 2009-2013 professional chorister with the Ottawa Choral Society, where she enjoyed frequent performance opportunities with both the NAC and Ottawa symphony orchestras.

Tenor Myers performed with the Ottawa Valley Music Festival twice in 2015, and is delighted to be returning. The Deep River native studied at McGill and has performed nationally and internationally, including a tour of China as a laureate of Jeunes Ambassadores Lyriques. He is currently performing

Armsden golf tourney put off until spring Local golfers will have to wait until next year to honour Bruce Armsden on the links.

The first edition of what is planned to be the annual Bruce Armsden Packer Alumni Golf Tournament was rained out in May and tentatively rescheduled for Sept.

9 at the Sand Point Golf Club.

However, organizers and the Armsden family have

decided to hold off on the tournament, which will double as a fundraiser for the local Kidsport initiative.

It will be rescheduled for 2017, likely in the spring.

Bruce Armsden was a well-respected, long-time Arnprior Jr. B Packers equipment manager and trainer (58 years) and tireless community volunteer who died Feb. 15.

Jaguar open raises $5,000 for high school’s sports Jaguars are not native to the golf course, but when it comes to raising money for a great cause they can be easily spotted.

On Aug. 20 there were more than 80 golfers at the Renfrew Golf Club for the third annual St. Joseph’s Catholic High School Jaguar Open. The annual event raised about $5,000 for the school’s athletic program.

“It’s definitely an injection into the program,” said Mark Valliquette, athletic director at the school. “It’s been great and it builds every year … we feel it has been a huge

success.”

The last two years the funds raised have been used to buy new sound equipment for the gym, jerseys and helped contribute to the school score/shot clock.

Valliquette sends a huge thank you to all the players, volunteers and local businesses who helped contribute to make this year’s event another success.

Andy Skerkowski, Graham Connors, Steven Lance and Ryan Lunney won the tournament, shooting a 13-under 58.
