Early morning truck fire closes Hwy. 417 STAFF

A tractor-trailer carrying a load of hay caught fire early Monday morning (Aug. 14) on Highway 417 near Kinburn.

At roughly 8:30 a.m., a fire started in the cab of a fully loaded tractortrailer on Highway 417, just east of the Kinburn off-ramp. Firefighters from Kinburn (Station 61), Dunrobin (Station 66) and Carp (Station 64) responded and had the fire extinguished 45 minutes later at 9:15 a.m. according to Ottawa Fire Services District 6 Sector Chief Jim Andrews. Two pumpers and two tankers were also on hand.

There were no injuries or damage to the road surface.

“When I arrived on scene the owner had already been working on arranging to separate the cab from the load,” Andrews said.

The highway was completely reopened around 2 p.m. “Everything was scooped up and transported to a spot where it could be safely disposed of,” Andrews said.

Despite the spectacular photos, Andrews said the fire was easily manageable by trained professionals. “One truckload of water would generally knock down a fire like this,” he said.

People are being warned not to jump into the Madawaska River anywhere near the weir.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) learned from a resident that young people, described as teenagers, last week were jumping into the river at Hydro Park West, on the public library side.

The fast-moving water is metres away from the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) weir and downstream from the generating station.

The weir is an artificial waterfall that helps to control water levels in the Madawaska River as part of hydroelectric production at the Arnprior Generating Station.

The release of water can happen at any moment.

Anyone caught by the recirculating currents would have difficultly reaching air and could be

hit by the stone weir or rocks. It has been described as a tumble action similar to a washing machine.

“You could drown in it if you get into the water there,” said OPG spokesman Neal Kelly. “We are asking the public to heed the warning signs that are posted. There are buoys in the water.

This is not a safe activity. It is very dangerous.”

OPG has taken the information seriously enough to post extra security at the site. But Jen Lewis, whose family (including three teenagers) has lived for several years across Albert Street from the river, is skeptical that anyone has been jumping from that spot.

“I think it’s a rumour,” she said. “We have never seen or heard of anyone trying to jump from there.”

Lewis is more concerned about young people jumping from the trestle less than a kilometre upstream.

The transition for Arnprior’s new fire chief, in the role for two months now, has been a smooth one.

About 30 calls have come into the fire department since Jeff Crawford’s June 19 start, but none resulted in loss of life or buildings. He hasn’t even had to implement major changes to the 30-volunteer, three full-time manager structure. “It’s been well run in the past,�

Crawford said. “There’s a very dedicated, motivated group of guys here.

I’m proud to be their chief.�

Speaking from his office at the fire hall, he said a couple of times how impressed he is with the prevention and education program run by deputy fire chief Rick Desarmia and fire prevention officer Cory Nicholas. He has also found staff at town hall to be “very welcoming and helpful.�

He fills some big shoes in John Okum, who left without explanation from his side or the town administration’s. One theory is that the popular Okum couldn’t get over the fact the municipality’s downtown revitalization plan included sidewalks too large at the John and Elgin streets intersection to properly accommodate fire

trucks. Town administration insists proper engineering studies were done.

Others have said they are technically safe, but still too tight. Does it prolong response time and pose a danger?

Crawford hasn’t had the opportunity to drive the intersection; it remains closed for roadwork. He did say that Sparks Street near Parliament Hill is a pedestrian road and doesn’t accept trucks. He added that if there is a fire, the fire department will make it on scene.

A solemn yet soft-spoken man in his early 60s, Crawford has enjoyed a long career in firefighting. It began in 1982 at the age of 25 when his uncle told him to come to a meeting in Kemptville where each was living.

He had no idea what the meeting was about. Then he was “volun-told� to join the local volunteer fire department.

They needed members and he was young with a strong back, he said.

That alone made it a good fit. But it got better. “It quickly became my calling. I love every aspect of it, took as many courses as possible. I was a Kemptville officer by election of my peers.�

In 1990 he joined the Ottawa Fire Service as a full-time member. The learning and teaching others contin-

However, he doesn’t seem to have a deeply considered opinion on the old adage that it takes a rare person to run into a burning building that everyone else is running out of. “It takes a special person to do that, for sure,� he said, chuckling.

building and not enjoy it. Not one bit.

It isn’t easy to predict how one reacts under pressure. Nor how to control it.

The best you can do it act in a deliberate fashion, not like a chicken with its head cut off, he said. “I always tell my guys: Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.�

Crawford grew up in the Ottawa neighbourhood of Westboro. It isn’t long into describing his childhood — and the significant events that shaped

his life — before the death of his father arises. “My father was an electrical engineer. He was killed in a car accident on the way to a job. I was 10 years old,� he said. “I was pretty withdrawn (in grade school). I kept to myself.

The family moved to Kemptville, where he was brought under the wing of his uncle. The two shared a love of harness racing and raising horses.

Crawford would care for the animals, train, and even race them.

Arnprior is not unknown to him.

He is familiar with the area, and now has a house here. He tells folks that his wife Leanne Rousselle is from Renfrew. (Some of have jokingly told him that is not a selling point in Arnprior.)

She intends to sell the Kemptville house where she teaches fitness, but not for a couple of years, after their son finishes high school. “We always intended to move to this area,� he said.

A major file he is currently dealing with is the fire master plan, a document that will guide the force over the next 10 years. He said the biggest challenge continues to be finding volunteers who are in town and ready to respond to calls at all times of day.

Never throw water on a grease fire – this will only spread the flame.

DO NOT place the BBQ close to wooden fences or walls, vinyl siding, or anything that can burn. The area behind your BBQ must be free of anything that can ignite – this is where hot gases escape.

Keep loose clothing away from a hot BBQ. Keep children and pets at least one metre (three feet) away from a hot BBQ. When finished barbecuing, turn the gas valve off first, then turn off the burner controls so no gas is left in the connecting hose.

It’s the news many in Renfrew County have been waiting for.

The next stage of the Highway 17 expansion is one step closer, as it is now at the design phase.

In a press release on Aug. 8, the County of Renfrew operations committee received a copy of a letter from the Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca that was sent to RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski.

The letter stated: “I am pleased to advise you that the ministry did secure approval to proceed with detail design for the next phase of expansion of Highway 17 from Scheel Drive to three kilometres west of Bruce Street (Town of Renfrew).”

Yakabuski told Metroland Media he received a call from Del Deca last week and knew the letter was coming. “It’s good news but not all the good news we’ve been waiting for,” said Yakabuski. “It’s good news from the point of view there is a clear commitment to move on to the next phase.”

Yakabuski has been working on this file for a number of years.

“This has been an ongoing top priority for myself, the county, and its wardens since I’ve been elected. While there has been progress, we always need to press for more,” said Yakabuski.

“Hopefully, it will mean once this phase is complete we will move on to building highways.”

As to when there will be shovels in the ground, Yakabuski hopes it will be as soon as possible.

“I will be really happy when I hear the sound of bulldozers in the ground,” said Yakabuski.

“That’s what we are really looking forward to.”

As to the cost of the design, Yakabuski was unable to confirm the details.

He also noted the minster has been very supportive of the project, and Yakabuski and Del Duca discuss it on a regular basis.

In the release, McNab/Braeside mayor and county councillor Tom Peckett, also chair of the County of Renfrew operations committee, thanked the minister for the excellent news and expressed his gratitude for all those involved in bringing attention to this vitally important issue for Renfrew County, including Yakabuski.

Peckett told Metroland Media this was wonderful news.

“It’s unprecedented; they have gone ahead and approved this study without the road being on the five-year plan,” said Peckett. “Nobody in Renfrew County has heard that being done. It indicates that it should be in the five-year plan soon.”

Peckett says it will have two major impacts on the area. “It will be safer for everyone, especially in our township at the Calabogie Road intersec-

tion,” said Peckett. “And, the economic value to our township and Renfrew County will be substantially increased.”

Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy was also pleased with the announcement.

“This announcement allows the ministry to move forward with all the steps that lead to getting the highway corridor ready for four-lane expansion to just past Renfrew,” said Murphy in the press release. “ I want to take a moment to specifically thank MPP John Yakabuski and councillor and former Warden Peter Emon.

Their tireless efforts to keep bringing this issue to the forefront with the province and creating dialogue with stakeholders without a doubt has contributed greatly to the realization of today’s announcement.”

Renfrew Reeve and county councillor Peter Emon added this is an important piece of infrastructure.

“The County of Renfrew, John Yakabuski, and the community have worked hard to demonstrate the need for the development of this critical piece of provincial and community infrastructure,” said Emon in the release. “I believe our partnerships with and the support of North Eastern Ontario also demonstrated the importance of Highway 17 in serving Ontario and Canada.”

Emon told Metroland Media it was great news that the minster had recognized their ask.

“He (Del Duca) has been fair and direct,” said Emon. “We have had some sign posts we developed and one of them was to have the design done. That’s the next milestone and he has moved that forward. The next step for us is when they finalize the design, allocate the funding, after that issue the tender and start digging. We are getting closer and it’s been a steady progress.”

Emon hopes it does not become a political issue in the near future. “The important piece for us going forward is to make sure this project does not become a political football in the next election,” said Emon. “I would hope all three parties would commit to moving it forward and speeding it up.”

Yakabuski said this is something they agreed to work on together. “This is a major priority,” said Yakabuski.

In the press release sent out by the county, it was noted that the letter outlined that the Ministry of Transportation will now be acquiring design consultants, and continuing with property acquisitions, utility relocations, environmental approvals, and consultations with Indigenous communities, the public, and stakeholders.

Once construction funding is confirmed, the ministry will identify the project in their fiveyear plan portion of the Southern Highways Program.

West Nile virus still found in county mosquitoes Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been found in Renfrew County.

It is the second week in a row that mosquitoes have been found to be carrying the virus.

“We have isolated positive mosquitoes in the Pembroke area,” said David Tantalo, coordinator of environmental health for the county, in an email statement.

The health unit began testing mosquitoes for West Nile virus (WNv) in 2005.

Mosquito traps are set up on a weekly basis across the region during the summer months. There have not been any reported human cases of WNv so far in 2017.

“The Renfrew County and District Health Unit actively monitors mosquitoes for West Nile virus,” says Dr. Robert Cushman, acting medical officer of health. “This recent finding of mosquitoes carrying WNv in Renfrew County is a reminder that even though the risk is low, individuals should take precautions to prevent bites and reduce breeding sites.”

About West Nile virus WNv is an infection found in birds, and carried by mosquitoes which feed on infected birds. WNv is spread to

humans and animals through bites by infected mosquitoes. Four out of five people infected will not show any symptoms. Others may see early symptoms of fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and, occasionally, vomiting and nausea. Of those showing symptoms, approximately one in 150 may develop more serious symptoms such as stiff neck, confusion, tremors, numbness or sudden sensitivity to light. If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of WNv, please contact your health care provider.

The risk of being infected by the West Nile virus is low, but now is a good time to reduce your risk by the following actions.

Cover up when outside by: • Wearing light-coloured clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, jackets, long pants, hats and socks, especially between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

• Applying federally-registered insect repellent (containing DEET) on exposed skin to limit exposure to mosquitoes. Follow label instructions for proper application.

Plaintree Systems’ fortunes skyrocket this year DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The layperson would be forgiven for thinking Plaintree Systems, one of Arnprior’s largest employers, was in trouble. It sold off one of its seven businesses last year, Arnprior Firetrucks. And it recently issued a press release announcing a delay in filing its annual financial statements because it couldn’t afford to pay the auditors.

However, nothing could be further from the truth, according to CEO David Watson. The high-tech fire truck manufacturing still takes place at

Plaintree’s location, and the new owners haven’t told him of plans to move it. More importantly, though, is that last year’s slump in sales — across all its businesses — caused by sluggish markets has been replaced by significant highs.

“Right now, we are absolutely booming,” Watson said. “It’s been a really dramatic turnaround.”

The company of about 125 workers and 15 engineers is looking to hire more salespeople, engineers, plant people, and technicians. Its steel supplier is struggling to keep up with Plaintree’s demand, he added.

Last year’s slump in sales at Plaintree was caused by sluggish markets, and has been replaced by significant highs.

A major reason for the turnaround has to do with its Triodectic business.

It builds geodesic domes for the commodities sector, primarily mining. The sector usually asks for one or two of the roughly $3 million domes per year.

In the last six months, now that the mining has picked up again worldwide, Triodectic has accepted three orders. And it expects a few more in the near future.

Other operations under the same roof — aerospace parts maker Hypernetics, telecommunication light-beam provider Plaintree Free Space Optics, and hydraulic cylinders producer Spotton — are also moving along.

The company also owns aerospace Summit Machining in Pennsylvania.

But the recently-acquired Madawaska Doors is struggling.

“We are still trying to get produc-

tion levels up,” Watson said. “Every door is custom-made. We are trying to increase production to keep up with sales while retaining the high quality people have come to expect.”

A delay in filing statements is “very common” in Plaintree’s business, and it won’t result in any penalty. The auditors are now getting to work.

The annual general meeting will be held as usual in September.

Highway expansion nears?

Yes, residents in Arnprior and Renfrew and all points in between should take a moment to enjoy the latest development in the Highway 17 expansion saga.

It has been years in the making; virtually every top community leader along the route has lobbied Queen’s Park for it.

And now the provincial Liberals have issued a letter saying the government is at the design stage.

But don’t grow too complacent, not, at least, until shovels are in the ground.

Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca sent the Aug. 8 letter to Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MPP John Yakabuski, who passed it along to the County of Renfrew operations committee. The letter states: “I am pleased to advise you that the ministry did secure approval to proceed with detail design for the next phase of expansion of Highway 17 from Scheel Drive to three kilometres west of Bruce Street (Town of Renfrew).”

Designs are good. Designs are expensive.

Designs usually mean a builder is serious about proceeding. The obvious question is when, and we have no obvious answer to that question.

It isn’t officially in the government’s five-year plan. That fact has allowed doubt to seep in.

Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon already hinted as much.

He hopes it will not become a “political football” in the next election.

Are the Liberals using the plan as bait for

votes? Would the PCs suspend and review all infrastructure plans if elected? How would the NDP move forward?

Emon, former county warden who took the lead on this file for many years, didn’t make any guesses.

He simply stated a hope the expansion will go forward, and that Del Duca has been “fair and direct” in their exchanges.

There is no question that the sooner this road turns into four lanes, from Scheel Road to three kilometres past Renfrew’s Bruce Street, the more lives will be saved.

Especially at the Calabogie Road intersection, which will become a cloverleaf.

Human error will be greatly reduced even as traffic moves more quickly.

This is true regardless of assertions some have made in social media: namely, blame bad drivers not the road.

The almost bumper-to-bumper traffic on the narrow Highway 17 is less forgiving of careless drivers. That is why the government is indicating it will spend millions of dollars to widen it.

However, there is much to be done before travellers get to that point.

Design consultants must be hired, property acquisitions made, utility relocations, environmental approvals, consultations with Indigenous communities, the public, and stakeholders. There is plenty of talking still to do, unfortunately. But, yes, we should enjoy this next step.

Setting the facts straight on global warming To the editor: In inspiration from MP Cheryl Gallant’s unfortunate House of Commons vote to repudiate the Paris Climate Accord, pseudoscience has been filling these pages in recent weeks. In a July 5th letter to the Renfrew Mercury, A.M. Azulay argued, “The truth is that climate change is a political tool.” In the July 19th issue, Bob Beyer argued, “Twenty plus years ago a career politician (not a scientist) by the name of Al Gore shocked the world into believing in global warming.” In the July 13th Arnprior Chronicle Guide, Brian Tourangeau wrote, “scientists and Al Gore were caught red-handed falsifying documents in order to

provide the data results they wanted.”

Let us review the real facts: The science linking global temperatures to atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels was first developed in the late 19th century by the Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius.

CO2 has been confirmed within laboratory settings to trap heat by trapping sun radiation.

At the start of the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric CO2 levels were around 280 parts-per-million (ppm).

Today atmospheric CO2 levels are above 400ppm, higher than they have been in millions of years.

Humans are emitting hundreds of billions of tonnes of CO2.

The earth’s natural climate changes

have usually correlated with changes in atmospheric CO2 levels.

That humans cause global warming through greenhouse gas and CO2 emissions is the conclusion of thousands of peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Unfortunately, sharing more of these scientific facts is not likely to change the minds of those who fervently dispute the human causality in global warming.

The problem is not that they lack information, but rather that they are falsely educated with misinformation.

They also fear to accept the science out of a value-based fear of justifying political ideologies that they oppose.

Easing the deniers’ fears requires arguing that controlling CO2 emissions does not require either big government or small government, nor more powerful nor less powerful corporations, but rather only smart government.

Generally, there are four methods that governments may choose to reduce greenhouse gases: picking and choosing “green” businesses to subsidize, sector-by-sector regulations, carbon cap-and-trade, and direct carbon taxation.

revenue-neutral carbon taxation to reduce emissions, with the revenue of the tax kept out of the public purse and redistributed back to the citizenry.

Preston Manning, one of the patriarchs of Canada’s modern conservative movement, endorses this form of carbon pricing.

Conspiracy theories are not always wrong, since humans do at times cynically manipulate each other. But the real conspiracy is in the millions of dollars that oil companies invest in climate denial propaganda, despite their own CEOs acknowledging human-caused global warming. The conspiracy is not in the science that is older than the lifetime of any person on earth.

MPP wrong to call for minimum wage study

To the editor: In his August column decrying raising Ontario’s minimum wage from around $11.50 today to $15 by 2019, Conservative member Yakabuski reveals only one side.

He states “...that before changes of such magnitude are made, a comprehensive economic impact study should be completed.” Translation: “When one has all the time in the world, or wants to delay interminably, form a committee—i.e. this will never happen under the Conservatives.”

Member Yakabuski failed to state that in fact, Ontario has studied the matter interminably, resulting finally in this decision by the Liberals to both assist our economy as well as raise citizens out of poverty by raising the minimum wage. This issue has also already been positively decided upon by other jurisdictions—the cities of San Francisco and Seattle, the State of New York, U.S.A. federal government (re: its own employees), and the thriving nations of Great Britain, Denmark and Australia, to name a few.

Competent, multi-national, independent research into the overall effects on economic activ-

ity of raising this wage in these and other regimes has admittedly been mixed, with much of the data favourable to such an increase.

This member Yakabuski well knows, but doesn’t say.

To summarize such research: Yes, some small businesses do sometimes lay off workers or close shop because of rising wages, but this seems also due to those individual businesses being “inefficiently” run in the first place. Most well managed small businesses paying out a “living wage” continue to operate at a profit because of better automation, cheaper production and admin. costs, decreased hiring costs with greater employee “loyalty”, and spreading out any residual cost increases to the consumer.

These above four examples indicate nothing new: Automation is always on the rise, better ways to obtain and produce products are always occurring, human resource costs are always expensive, and inflation (for example) is always eating into consumer costs anyway, so a minimum wage increase cannot be construed as a sole driver of economic growth or lack thereof.

Economic ups and downs are

constantly happening over time for a large variety of factors, and this will always be the case.

Member Yakabuski would no doubt like to see purely “marketdriven forces” to be the single determinant for wage and price changes, but any grade-school child can tell us that at least in democracies, “greed-driven/ trickle down” market practices need to be mitigated by sensible government policies such as reasonable occupational health and safety rules, labour laws protecting the “vulnerable”, fair work standards for all workers regardless of background, and as well, decent (minimum) wage rates and contract assurances.

This is especially true in Ontario, where fully 30 per cent of all workers earn less than $15 per hour. How does this large lack of spending power decrease overall personal consumer debt, assist job security, or enhance personal savings—all desirable social goals? Clearly it does not. Research also shows that increased wages, if introduced gradually and carefully (as is the case proposed here) can in turn lead to substantial increases in domestic consumption, tax revenues due to that

consumption, decreased poverty, therefore increased overall economic activity, resulting in (surprise!) more jobs!

Is this not exactly the ideal “capitalist” model that should inform Member Yakabuski’s thinking? If, however, he (or any reader) still has doubts as to the correctness of this much-needed wage increase, he (or they) should try living for a month on $11.50 per hour (or less) – oh, my apologies: many, unfortunately, already do! At an estimated full time annual gross wage, $11.50 equals approximately $24,000; $15 equals $31,000. This wage increase will therefore put many more Ontarians into the “lower middle class.” No one can dispute the economic benefit of a viable, working middle class.

In short, competent small businesses will fully adjust to this necessary policy change, as will the rest of us. We will then I think be a far more affluent society in the longer term, and that is an outcome noone can argue with.

To the editor: I’d like to thank Bob Boyer for his timely letter in the July 20 Renfrew Mercury, ‘Applause for MP Cheryl Gallant for Standing up for Personal Beliefs.’

In defending MP Gallant for standing up for her personal beliefs he is actually typifying the gutless Liberal tolerance for their agenda only, and nothing else - swimming downstream with erroneous dogma.

I applaud Cheryl for her stance on man-made global climate change. She sees the Paris Accord for what it really is: control by the Leftist elites to destroy the economy of the richer nations, the United States being in the forefront, by mandating transfer payments to Third World countries. Isn’t it ironic how Turkey opted out of the accord when they learned they wouldn’t be receiving cash from the United States, the main contributor. We don’t know how much Jihadi Justine has pledged Canada for, but it must be remembered that Stephen Harper was dragging his heels towards this fiasco.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama joined the accord in 2016 by executive order because he knew Congress wouldn’t pass it. The agreement obliged America to pay $100 billion a year to the United Nations, possibly the most corrupt institution in the world. We are supposed to believe the UN will use this money to protect the environment, namely the reduction of carbon dioxide which would be extremely costly; and many governments want to increase regulations, even more rules that would gut prominent industrial economies.

The Left has made climate change something

like a religion, an article of faith regardless of the evidence. It is a tool they are using to increase their control. But what about the evidence?

Mr. Boyer mentions the oft-quoted 97 per cent of scientists who agree that climate change is real and threatening the planet. Do you know how the 97 per cent figure was arrived at? Well here it is: (Source,The Heartland Institute, International Conference on Climate Change: Art Robinson, Voice of Reason Award) “The 97 per cent figure comes from a survey of almost 12,000 peer-reviewed science papers conducted by Australian scientist John Cook.

The survey actually found a 97 percent consensus only among peer-reviewed papers taking a position on the cause of global warming. The catch is that only 34 percent of the papers took a position on the subject. Since 33 percent of the papers appeared to endorse the notion that humans cause climate change, Cook divided 33 by 34 to arrive at his 97 percent figure. It would be more honest to claim that 1 percent of scientists say humans are not causing climate change, one third of scientists say they are and two-thirds of scientists are not making such dogmatic proclamations. “ “When University of Delaware Prof. David Legates re-examined Cook’s study, he found that even the 33 percent figure might be artificially high.

There you have it; the Left will cling to their intolerant belief systems to gain control no matter what the evidence – akin to the junk science of evolution; but that’s another topic.

One thing I enjoy about nature is that in the wilds, there are always unanticipated encounters. It might be a spectacular wildflower or unusual insect whose identity remains unsolved until you return home and search the books. Or it might be an encounter with a larger animal, even one with which you are quite familiar.

Recently, I experienced the latter. I was in Algonquin Park looking for Common Branded Skippers, tiny northern butterflies that fly in August.

For two hours I searched for them in a small meadow near West Smith Lake.

This year, apart from Monarchs, most butterflies are scarce; the incessant rain has likely had a negative effect on caterpillars and pupae.

The Joe Pye Weed and other meadow wildflowers were alive with bees and flies, but butterflies were near absent; I encountered only three Least Skippers, one Painted Lady and one Aphrodite Fritillary.

I was on my knees taking photos of Bumble Bees when I glanced toward the narrow canal that ran along the meadow’s edge to a pond farther out.

To my surprise I was looking into the eyes of a beaver.

As I slowly moved to change my camera lens, the beaver, which had been floating silently, responded with an explosion of water. Waves soon rippled down the canal toward the pond. Eventually the animal’s head emerged far away and soon was out of sight. I waited quietly and after about 15 minutes the beaver returned. It swam up the canal, one that had been dug years ago by its ancestors, stop-

ping mere metres from me. For several minutes it silently floated, its nostrils flaring as it smelled the air. When a breeze blew my scent to it, the beaver dove and again vanished. Over the next hour this scenario was repeated several times until the beaver decided I posed no threat.

Once satisfied I was harmless, it swam past me and climbed out of the water onto a trail leading to the meadow. It vanished into the dense cloak of Virgin’s Bower that smothered the Bracken Fern and grasses. I could always tell where the beaver was by the violent shaking of the plants, a scene reminiscent of one in Jurassic Park.

Eventually the beaver emerged, a long bouquet of plants clenched in its teeth and trailing behind it. It entered the canal and towed its cargo to a widening where it stopped and began noisily devouring its bounty.

A smaller beaver, likely last year’s young, arrived a short time later.

When it tried to steal part of the larger beaver’s meal it was met with an angry response, so it settled for nibbling on chunks of Water-lily floating on the water’s surface.

Both beavers regularly swam past me to harvest more plants. One time the larger beaver returned with an impressive White Birch in tow. The physical effort it expended in dragging the tree along the canal and across the pond was admirable.

As I have experienced in the past, once Beavers learn your scent they will tolerate your presence. It just requires a lot of patience. And not showering or changing clothes for a week also helps!

An Arnprior comic is a semifinalist in a national competition, and he needs as many votes as possible by Friday, Aug. 18, to win $25,000.

“Twenty-five thousand dollars is a quarter of a tenth of a million,” said Nigel Grinstead.

He laughed at the idea of well-paid Canadian comics.

“Oh, yes. The business is just booming these days,” he said.

“I’ve been sprucing up my spaghetti with sauce.”

SiriusXM’s Top Comic competition went from 60 hand-picked comics to just 18. Billed as a search for “Canada’s best comedian,” voting has been open for the last month. At the end of the voting period, the six comics with the most votes will move on as finalists, along with two picked by judges. Grinstead made the finals two years ago.

“It’s been the only loss I’ve suffered in comic competition. I’m hoping this will be a retribution story.”

The eight finalists will then compete live on stage in September as part of Just of Laughs (JFL) 42 in Toron-

to. Along with the cash sum, the winner will also receive a guaranteed spot at three of Canada’s biggest comedy festivals in 2018: JFL Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Two runners up will also receive televised spots in the Montreal show.

Grinstead is up against competition from across the country, almost all from large urban centres with potentially huge voting blocs. He isn’t begging for support, but he is working hard to convince social media users to “go from the Prior to the fire” and double-click on his name.

“I hope people watch the videos and, if they like mine, to vote for me,” he said.

His style is curmudgeon sarcasm, he said, that draws from his “Valley boy” upbringing. He is the son of town coun. Lynn Grinstead.

He said a good motivator for entering the world of comedy is the aversion to doing other jobs. He was a fan of slapstick comics Leslie Nielsen and Jim Carrey, but “getting hit in the face with a frying pan and a fish” wasn’t for him.

Safe student accommodation fire safety tips from AFD ARNPRIOR FIRE DEPARTMENT

As students prepare to move into shared or rented accommodations to attend college or university, parents, guardians and students themselves should take an active role in finding a safe place to live. It is essential for caregivers and students to talk about fire and life safety. Whether returning to school or leaving home for the first time, a discussion about good fire safety practices can help to ensure this exciting time in a student’s life is not marred by a fire tragedy.

“I understand that it is a very exciting time for young adults, however they should take extra steps to ensure that they stay fire safe during the school year as this important part of adult living may often be overlooked,” said Cory Nicholas,fire prevention/ protection officer for the Arnprior Fire Department.

Living Safely 101 - What Every Student Should Know to Prevent Fire Look While You Cook: Stay in the kitchen when cooking – especially if using oil or high temperatures. If a pot catches fire, have a proper-fitting

pot lid handy to slide over the pot and turn off the stove. Cooking requires constant attention. Distractions like televisions, cell phones, or computers can lead to a tragic cooking fire.

Candle With Care: If you use candles in your room or apartment, keep

them away from anything that can burn and place them in a safe, sturdy holder with a glass shade or hurricane chimney. Place them where they cannot be knocked over and blow them out when leaving the room.

Keep An Eye On Excessive Drinkers: Alcohol is a common factor in many fire fatalities involving cooking and smoking. Be aware of roommates and friends who have been drinking excessively, especially if they are cooking or smoking.

Smoke Outside: Establish rules for smokers. If you permit smoking inside, use large, sturdy ashtrays that can’t be easily tipped over. Ashtrays should be emptied into a metal container not the garbage can. Check around furniture cushions after people have been smoking, especially if they have been drinking.

Use Electricity Wisely: Toasters, coffeemakers and microwaves should be plugged directly into an outlet. If you must use an extension cord, buy one that is the correct gauge for the appliance and has a CSA or ULC approval mark on the label. CSA or ULC approved power bars may be

used for stereo equipment, computers and lights.

Clear the Clutter: Keep things that burn away from heat sources like stovetops, space heaters and electronic equipment. Tea towels and paper too close to burners can catch fire. Keep space heaters at least one metre away from bedding, furniture and curtains.

Working Smoke Alarms: It’s the Law: Your room or apartment must have working smoke alarms. Test them monthly and notify the landlord immediately if they’re not working.

Dead batteries must be replaced right away. Nuisance alarms can be avoided by making sure smoke alarms are not located too close to the kitchen or bathroom. Consider getting a smoke alarm with a hush feature. Smoke alarms should be checked after any extended absence such as Christmas break and reading week. Never tamper with or disable a smoke alarm.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms: Ontario law requires all homes/apartments to have a working carbon monoxide alarm outside all sleeping areas if there is a fuel-burning appliance or fireplace in the home/apartment. If

the building has a service room or a garage, carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside each sleeping area of all apartment units above, below and beside the service room or garage.

If there is a service room, a carbon monoxide alarm also must be installed in the service room. Contact the local fire department for more information.

Plan To Escape: Know two ways out of your room or apartment in case of fire. Identify all exits and make sure you can use them. If you live in a highrise, familiarize yourself with the building’s fire safety plan. If you discover fire, call the fire department from a safe location outside.

Be Equipped: To stay safe, all students should put together a package that includes a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm, a battery powered lantern or flashlight and radio, extra batteries and a CSA or ULC approved power bar.

CPAN issues Canada 150 challenge RENFREW COUNTY CHILD POVERTY ACTION NETWORK

Lyn Smith, Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) executive director, said, “We very much appreciate the ongoing help and support the community continues to provide. This is especially important for our Tools for School program.

The key to CPAN’s success is that we are fortunate to live in Renfrew County, where our community is kind and caring, their involvement helps us to continue to help so many local children in need each and every year in many ways. We are asking for their help to allow every child the opportunity to reach their full potential so that no child is left behind.”

Research shows that when children grow up in poverty, they are at high risk of dropping out of school and/or not transitioning to post-secondary education. This then puts them at risk of being “unemployable” as adults, and if they then have children, these children

are more likely to live in poverty, continuing the cycle of poverty.

CPAN’s Tools for School program was created to allow all children to reach their full potential in life and enjoy a bright future.

When CPAN was formed in 2000, our goal was to take action and help children living in poverty. Back then, we stuffed one backpack at a time and gave them out to children on a case-by-case basis.

Tools for School has grown substantially since then and now helps between 1,000 and 1,500 local children/youth in need annually by providing a backpack, school supplies and shoes. We cannot do this alone, and need your help.

Annual seniors barbecue another success LIZ WALL Seniors at Home

The sun gods looked down on us throughout the day and continued until the day ended with ‘Wipeout’.

We could not have asked for a better day when the sun shined throughout on July 20 for the seniors’ barbecue in Robert Simpson Park and the 255 plus that participated in the 18th annual as hosted by the staff and volunteers of Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home (ABMSH). Social program co-ordinator Marg Bourk and ABMSH executive director Dennis Harrington welcomed everyone to the event, thanking everyone for supporting the yearly event and promised an enjoyable afternoon with plenty of music by Smooth Country, good food, fun and plenty of old-fashion hospitality.

Arnprior Packers name new head coach TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

It didn’t take long to line up a new bench boss for the Arnprior Packers of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League (CCHL2).

General manager Brent Sylvester made the announcement of a new coach via email Aug. 8.

“The Arnprior Packers are pleased to name Hamish Fraser the new bench boss to replace Tony Iob’s departure,” said Sylvester.

Fraser is a Carleton Place native and is no stranger when it comes to coaching minor hockey.

He has coached minor hockey with the Mississippi Thunder Kings for 12 years, was the head coach/general manager of the Perth Blue Wings, and spent four years with the Richmond Royals organization as assistant/head coach and general manager, both of the CCHL2.

He separated ties with Richmond in the spring of 2017.

Fraser’s personal hockey claim to fame was when he played for Kemptville 73’s when they were a Junior B club. The team went undefeated in the 1996 season and went on to win the league championship.

Fraser admitted he has a different style of coaching.

“I’m a communicative coach. I rely on talking to the players a lot to make sure they are well aware of their roles,” said Fraser, who is also open to ideas the players may have.

“It’s been well received over the last nine or 10 years.”

It is evident by the way he speaks about his team he cares about the success of his players both on and off the ice.

“They are my players, my boys, I say that a lot. I tend to do a lot for them and they end up doing a lot for me and we end up being successful,” said Fraser.

“I want them to reach the next level but I understand they have school and other commitments.”

The Packers finished in second place in the Richardson Division last season with a record of 39-8-1.

“Out of the top four teams from last year, Arnprior is by far set up the best this season,” said Fraser.

The Packers made it to the quarter finals in the playoffs, losing in game seven, at home to the Royals.

Fraser said he is familiar with the

Packers as it was his job as general manager to study the other teams.

He noted the Packers will be without leading scorer Mathew Labrosse, who had 42 goals last season, and Daniel Monk who had 41 goals.

Fraser said he is confident with the returning core and some players they have acquired in the off-season that they will do well.

“They probably have three or more 30-goal scorers this year,” said Fraser.

Former Packers coach Iob recently left the team for the Navan Grads of the Central Hockey League.

“I have a lot of respect for Tony and knowing what Brent can bring I think we will be competitive,” said Fraser. “I expect us to be one of the top teams and we will be ready to go.”

Packers training camp runs Aug. 15, 16, 17 and they have four exhibition games scheduled.

On Aug. 24 they travel to Ottawa to face the Golden Knights at 7:15 p.m., Aug. 27 they host the Knights at the Nick Smith Centre at 7:30 p.m. The Packers also have two games with the newly-formed Carleton Place Jr. Canadians on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. and Sept.

3 at 2 p.m. both on the road.

The regular season starts with the annual showcase in Ottawa Sept. 9 and 10.

In other Packer news the team announced on Aug. 9 former player Ryan Bangs has committed to the London Knights of the OHL.

The Upper Ottawa Valley’s only dirt bike track is motoring past its third year in operation.

Dubbed “Ontario’s naturally elevated track” the Kennelly Mountain Motocross (KMMX) race series this year was on two weekends, one in June and one in July. That’s when dirt bike racers from across the region bring their campers and equipment and machines up Ontario’s highest mountain ridge near Calabogie and Mount St. Patrick to a unique destination. The sandy loam soil track winds along the mountain’s ridge offering two-minute lap times of continuous elevation change.

Owners Sheri and Chris Kopetoske opened the second track in Eastern Ontario (the only other is south of Ottawa, in Richmond). After years of driving their son to tracks in Toronto, Montreal and beyond, they were sure a spot in the valley would work. And it has. More than 200 participated in the July 15-16 series, up significantly from the previous year. Hundreds of kids – both boys and girls - from towns like Arnprior and Renfrew have joined KMMX. Riders up to the age of 65 participate.

“We’re having a terrific weekend,” a busy Sheri said on July 16. “The kids are having a great time. Motocross is

Riders take the tournaments quite seriously, she added. It’s usually lights out (or at least generators off) at 11 p.m. and helmets on at 6 a.m.

“They have to be very disciplined,” Sheri said.

The competition is real, and the stakes are high for those looking to turn professional in Canada or the U.S. Sheri said about five riders from the Ottawa area are making a living off the sport.

It’s also a good cardio workout, surprisingly. A motorized bike does require daft handling and peak awareness. When the helmet comes off the driver is usually exhausted and sweating.

The couple hasn’t regretted taking the plunge and opening a motocross business. The entire family and some friends are involved. Son Collin, now 19, has a major role to play.

“The sport has been good to our family,” Sheri said. “It’s a huge community of friends, too.”

January 18, 1956-August 7, 2017 Former Town of Arnprior By-Law Enforcement Officer & Animal Control Officer It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our “rock”, our mom and devoted wife and best friend of our dad Bill MacMeechan of Arnprior.

Mom, Mary Barbara ‘Barb’ MacMeechan, passed away unexpectedly in the comfort and peace of her Arnprior family homestead on Monday, August 7, 2017. Mom was only 61 but filled a lifetime for us with lasting memories. We will always remember those years filled with so much love surrounded by family, friends and love of community. She was born January 18, 1956 the daughter of the late Clifford and Delima (Kilbride) Lebrun and sister to five brothers and three sisters. Mom and Dad started dating at a young age and soon knew they were soul mates.

They were married December 15, 1973. Later came their children, Meagan MacMeechan (Ottawa) and Mandy Stinson of Arnprior. Mom was so dedicated and loyal to her family, a strong lady who was there for all of us. She would later share that special love and dedication by showering her grandsons Deven and Liam Stinson. Together Mom and Dad shared their love of music as members of the Spirit of 69 (drum core marching band) for 10 plus years. They spent many nights at the ball diamonds in Arnprior; Bill coached and Barb as score keeper or running after her daughters. She had a strong respect for animals and her community serving both in her career as the former Town of Arnprior By-Law Enforcement Officer and Animal Control Officer.

Barb is also survived by siblings Marian Miller of Galetta, Anne Shirley Lebrun of Arnprior, Maureen Larkin (Danny) and James Lebrun, all of Galetta, brother-in-law Dwight Miller, two nephews, two nieces, many cousins and her special and true friend, Linda Roy of Ottawa. Everyone was “Kiddo” to mom but to us she will always be our mother, wife and grandma. Arrangements by the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street N., Arnprior. Classical, folk concert for 150th Grace St. Andrew’s United Church in Arnprior will be filled with the melodious sounds of Canadian classical and folk songs on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.

Molly Luhta is a lyric soprano praised for her full, warm and even tone of voice. She is a native of Arnprior and will be returning home to present a special concert of works in celebration of Canada’s 150th as part of a three concert mini-tour.

Pianist Kim Duca of Kingston will be her accompanist.

A meet and greet and light refreshments will be served after the concert.

Molly’s love of classical voice and theatre has driven her to pursue a career on the opera stage. Dedicated to her craft, she spent this summer in the role of the Countess in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Recent performances include Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, Beth March in Little women and Mrs. Webb in the Canadian premiere of Rorem’s Our Town.

In 2016, she won First Place in Voice 26 years at the National Canadian Music Competition.

Molly holds a Masters of Music degree from Western University. She holds two bachelor degrees from Queen’s University, one in Vocal Performance and a second in Music Education. In September 2014, Molly was guest soloist with the Ottawa Valley Music Festival in their performance of John Rutter’s Requiem. Molly was the 2014 winner of the Kingston Kiwanis Gobin Voice Award.

Molly lives in Kingston, Ontario and runs a very successful private studio with a full roster of voice and piano students. She is also the founder and program director of the Odessa Children’s Choir Program (OCCP).

New Plymouth was soon treated like a member of the family It wasn’t a secret for long ... even if it was meant to be. But no one got a brand-new car without the news spreading pretty fast.

Being next farm to Uncle Alec’s though, meant that we got a look at the new Plymouth before anyone else at Northcote.

And what a beauty it was. Certainly many steps up from the old Model T with the hole in the back floor, and the two front fenders different colours, which we got in a trade.

I was just as excited as was my little friend Velma when the new car came into her family.

My sister Audrey wondered where the money came from.

Did Uncle Alec sell off his herd of cattle, or his workhorses?

No, he didn’t. The cows and the horses were right there in the barnyard.

Uncle Alec, the good neighbour that he was, was more than generous letting us all have a ride in the new Plymouth, taking Mother to Briscoe’s General Store, and our family taking turns, and once driving Velma and me all the way to Douglas. He was pretty fussy about his new car too.

None of his sons were allowed behind the steering wheel, even though they were old enough to drive.

Enjoy the Pakenham Fair Aug. 19 Celebrate tradition and community Saturday, Aug. 19 in the village of Pakenham at the Pakenham Fair.

The more than 100-year-old traditional country fair gets underway bright and early on the grounds of the Stewart Community Centre from 7 to 9 a.m. with the popular breakfast at the fairgrounds concession stand.

Afterwards, satisfy your sweet tooth with a bake sale in the community centre lobby, sponsored by the Zion United Church Women.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., there are a whole host of activities for the entire family, including viewing fair exhibits (community centre), farmers’ market and displays (outside community centre), as well as a special Water Ways water show in the upper hall of the community centre. Local group, Bridging Generations, has co-ordinated the mini home show, which will showcase innovative water treatment solutions and waste water systems for rural residents. Workshops given by experts and outdoor Water Festival will also be featured, offering educational water play activities for kids.

As part of the Water Ways event, come participate in the dunk tank from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and pitch a few balls to dunk community members, including Pakenham Public School principal Dave Balfour.

Fire department displays and a craft and trade show will also be on offer. Vendors are welcome to participate and can call 613-2561077 to reserve a spot.

Community Centre and its grounds. A Merchant’s Sidewalk Sale and Community Yard Sale will be featured on the main and side streets, beginning at 9 a.m. The Pakenham Horse Association Family Horse Show will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the ball diamond and take in the Man’s Best Friend Contest in the special event tent at 10 a.m. In this competition, children are invited to bring their dogs to the fair and enter them into the contest for a chance to win some fun prizes.

Children’s activities and a petting farm will also be set up throughout the day in the tent beside the ball diamond. Fred Millar Field is the site of the 4-H Calf Club’s Calf Show, which will feature both dairy and beef classes.

The firefighters of Station 2 Pakenham will be grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers for hungry fair visitors, beginning at 11 a.m. in the canteen as well.

Puppets Up! Presents brings their travelling puppet show to Pakenham at 11:30 a.m., just before the official opening of the fair in the horse show ring at noon. The Fulton Deugo Family, the official 2017 Pakenham Fair Family, will be opening this year’s fair. Puppets Up! Presents are back with another performance at 1:30 p.m. and the Frog Jumping Competition will take place in the children’s tent beside the ball diamond at 1 p.m. All frogs will be returned to their home following the race.

Admission to the fair is $5 for all adults, while children under 12 get in for free.
