“The pool will also be sand-blasted and the inside of the pool has to be resurfaced,” said Arthur.

McGonigal Street work off to slow start Workers from Primrose Cartage & Excavating were spotted on McGonigal Street West Monday, indicating the McGonigal Street rehabilitation project might finally get underway.

Work has been slow starting on the project, part of Arnprior’s downtown revitalization. It was originally slated to start July 6 and run to the end of August. However, delays in working out last minute details, including getting approval from the county for digging up Daniel Street, has the project on hold. Primrose will be redoing the water, sewer and sanitary sewer lines between John and Daniel Street beginning with the water, so temporary outages are expected later this week.

The services are being redone up to the property lines.

Road work in McNab-Braeside nearing completion end of the month.

The Lochwinnoch Road (County Road 6) work includes portions of the road in both McNab-Braeside and Horton. The construction area runs from Goshen Road to Miller Road.

The county notes the road is open to traffic, but may be reduced to one lane at times with minor delays.

River Road and McLean Drive also remain open to traffic, but are occasionally down to one lane at time with delays.

The River Road (County Road 1) construction area stretches from 600 metres west of Usborne Street to Toner Road. The work area on McLean Drive runs from Usborne Street to .7 kilometres east of Highway 17 (that short area of the drive will be redone

when the Highway 417 four-laning arrives at the intersection).

A new attraction, a model train show, will be part of this year’s Arnprior White Pine Festival.

Arnprior resident and model railway enthusiast Gaston Moreau, in collaboration with the organizers of the festival, is pleased to announce the inaugural Model Train Show at the Arnprior Curling Club on Aug. 22-23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The show will be co-sponsored by Moreau and the festival.

Moreau notes that the Town of Arnprior has never had, to his knowledge, a model train show of the size that will be offered during the festival.

He has already received commitments from modellers from Smiths Falls, Kemptville, Carleton Place and Arnprior.

They are ready to display and operate their model railways for young and old to enjoy.

Keeping in line with White Pine Festival tradition, admission to the two-day model train show will be free.

There is plenty of free parking on the curling club grounds and the Giant Tiger train will be shuttling people to and from the downtown area.

Many people have fond memories of receiving a ‘Lionel train set’ for Christmas.

Like everything else though, the hobby has evolved and today, modellers operate with digital command or radio control.

As well, most locomotives are equipped with sound with all the ‘bells and whistles’.

RAILWAY EXHIBITS WELCOME

If anyone is interested in exhibiting a model railway collection or display, they are most welcome to do so by registering with Gaston Moreau at 613612-0353 by Friday, July 31.

Ontario Power Generation is conducting research in the vicinity of its Des Joachims, Chenaux and Chats Falls hydroelectric generating stations.

This research, which is being carried out by Kleinschmidt Associates and Bowfin Environmental Consulting, is in support of OPG’s ongoing American eel and lake sturgeon mitigation studies for these species at risk.

Kleinschmidt and Bowfin boats may be in close proximity to the shoreline as it completes day and night-time fishing abundance studies and shoreline inspections. This yearly research is being conducted under permits from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and in accordance with O. Reg. 242/08 (as amended by O. Reg. 176/13) under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. Work will continue until the end of September.

can help by ensuring the province knows how many local residents still don’t have a doctor.

While the committee is pleased to have helped persuade doctors Fitzsimon and Nejad to relocate to Arnprior, the area has lost five doctors in the last five years. And there are more on the verge of retiring.

Almost half of the local physicians are over the age of 55.

“Just because we’ve got two new doctors, we’re not done yet,” said Grinstead.

“We have to keep pushing .. or there will be a real problem when we lose more doctors to retirement.”

The community can play a role in helping Tromp and the physician recruitment committee recruit doctors, says chair Mark Nibourg.

He has issued a public appeal for everyone locally who doesn’t have a family physician to be registered with Health Care Connect (see his letter on page 8).

That way the Arnprior committee can continue to impress on the province that it needs help in attracting more doctors to the community.

Arnprior’s two new doctors have had an “overwhelming” number of people sign up to be their patients, said Tromp.

“And there’s still quite a demand,” she said, noting about 25 applications a week are being made by people seeking a doctor.

She said some people who have moved to the area are travelling to Kanata, Kingston and even Toronto because they don’t want to give up their doctor in fear of not getting a replacement locally.

Not having a local doctor can put people in a “difficult situation,” she said, noting it could even force some people to move away.

“Whether you’re young or old, it’s important to be able to have your health care needs met.”

The volunteer commit-

tee appreciates the major sponsorship of the Town of Arnprior, the Township of McNab-Braeside and Ontario Power Generation, Tromp noted. However, it can step up its efforts even more if the business community provides funding and donations in kind.

Recruiting doctors is a long process, said Tromp.

“It takes a couple of years.

It’s not like high tech job where there are thousands of applicants … doctors when they graduate already have a job.”

Arranging for medical students to visit the Arnprior hospital for a week, as happened last month with students from Queens and the University of Ottawa, is an important tool in recruiting doctors. “It’s a valuable experience for them,” said Grinstead. “It’s a chance for them to get introduced to the hospital and the community.”

She noted that the committee doesn’t have $100,000 in incentives to give new recruits, but there is much to recommend the area with its natural beauty and amenities, closeness to Ottawa, and office space.

The Renfrew-Arnprior OPP have reminded people again to be “very suspicious” of anyone calling claiming to represent a bank or credit card company.

One Renfrew County resident was contacted by a man claiming to represent a bank.

He claimed the person had been defrauded on a credit card issued through the bank and to log on to a website to view the transaction so the bank could refund the funds.

When the person logged on, the caller took remote access and control of the computer and began a transaction to transfer a large sum of money to a payee in India through a transfer company.

The victims told the caller he was alerting police and unplugged the computer to halt the transaction.

The male caller called them stupid and hung up the phone.

Employment and Social Development Minister Pierre Poilievre and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant urge families to take advantage of increases in the Universal Child Care Benefit.

The increases to the UCCB are expected to more than double the number of families that benefit - from 1.6 million to more than 4 million.

“Our government is making life more affordable for hard-working families in Pembroke, and across the Ottawa Valley, by increasing the Universal Child Care Benefit,” said Gallant. “More families will now be able to benefit and have more money to spend on their priorities as a family.”

About $1.15 billion in UCCB payments were sent out Monday to about 1.5 million families in the province of Ontario. The benefits are deemed taxable income.

If a family is not receiving the UCCB, has never received the UCCB or has never applied for the Canada Child Tax Benefit and still have children under 18 in your care, they are urged to go to www.canada.ca/taxsavings to find out how to apply.

The federal government campaign to encourage families to sign up for increased child care benefits reached Renfrew County last week.

The increases in the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) has generated controversy, with the Conservatives promoting them as a central to their policies to boost assistance for middle class families. However, the opposition parties are calling the increases a pre-election bribe to voters and argue a comprehensive child care plan would do more for parents who most need the help.

Conservatives Cabinet Ministers have been touring the country promoting the increases and urging families to sign up to receive the benefits, which began to be distributed Monday.

At a hastily-called press conference in Pembroke July 16, Federal Employment and Social Development Minister Pierre Poilievre and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant urged Renfrew County families not registered for the benefits to make sure they receive them.

They said an estimated 130 families with children in Pembroke and 90 others in Petawawa are eligible to receive money but are at risk of not receiving the benefit unless they apply. They didn’t have statistics for the rest of the county, although it is likely there are well over 100 more families in the riding in the same boat.

As a result, Poilievre asked for help from the media and the public to encourage these families to apply for the benefit.

Poilievre and Gallant explained that the majority of Canadian families with children, about 3.8 million, are known by the government and will automatically receive the boosted UCCB or be contacted to confirm their information.

However, an estimated 200,000 eligible families, including 69,000 in Ontario, are not currently captured by the Government’s UCCB system and may miss out on receiving money that is owed to them unless they apply, they said. For 2015 alone, this represents potentially millions of dollars in unclaimed benefits, Gallant and Poilievre noted.

Under the boosted UCCB, families will receive almost $2,000 per year for each child under 6 and $720 per year for each child aged 6 through 17. The new benefit amounts are retroactive to Jan. 1, and are reflected in monthly payments to families beginning this month.

Arnprior’s Ann Sofalvi is off to Munich in October.

But she’s not going to take in the famous Octoberfest celebrations. She is going to run the Munich Marathon for Team Diabetes.

Sofalvi is going door-to-door in Arnprior and area to raise the $6,100 needed for the Canadian Diabetes Association to make her eligible to be a member of Team Diabetes.

Sofalvi and her family are actively supporting the association as she has diabetes and so did her mother.

She is inspired by the efforts of her daughter, Sandra, who has been walking and running to raise money and awareness about diabetes for the past five years.

Ann Sofalvi has been in training for the 10-km marathon for some time and

is finding she is enjoying the challenge.

The training is reminiscent of her youth when she was an avid walker, she says.

Sofalvi will be flying to Munich on Oct. 8 for the marathon, which is scheduled for Oct. 10.

In a letter of support, Canadian Diabetes Association director Fred DeFina says Sofalvi’s dedication to raising awareness and money for diabetes “is to be commended” and the association “appreciates all her efforts.”

The funds she and other Team Diabetes members are directed towards the association’s mission of “leading the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while we work to find a cure,” he explains.

Connected to your community

Stretch your dollar at home Well, so much for heading south of the border for bargains this summer.

With the Canadian dollar down to 77 cents U.S. and dropping, any financial incentive to spend at least part of a summer vacation with Uncle Sam has waned.

Instead, we should be encouraging our American friends to spend their summer holidays enjoying the many attractions, at a discounted dollar rate, that the Upper Ottawa Valley has to offer.

As for Canadians heading south to vacation and shop, there never was much to gain monetary even when the dollar was at par. Shopping in the U.S., when all factors are considered, is a false economy.

Better to shop at home, supporting the businesses paying taxes to the federal, provincial and municipal governments that provide your services. Better to give a boost to companies that contribute to making their communities strong by donating to local schools, hospitals, sports teams, service clubs, etc. (ask any merchant, the list goes on and on).

Instead of gadding off to the bright lights, consider exploring the many attractions closer to home. Eastern Ontario is brimming with waterways, beaches, trails and parks to explore with accommodations to suit all budgets.

There are plenty of inexpensive day trips within easy distance of Arnprior. Pack a picnic lunch and mosey along to Robert Simpson Park, Braeside Beach, White Lake Park, Burnstown Beach, Barnet Park in Calabogie or get really exotic by boarding the Quyon Ferry and visit the Norway Bay promenade in Quebec.

There are also plenty of local activities planned this summer to keep one amused, starting this weekend with Arnprior’s first Dragon Boat Festival. Head down to Robert Simpson Park and cheer on our very own Prior Chest Nuts or the Draggin’ Behinds.

Being the town where two rivers meet, it’s about time Arnprior has a maritime festival to complement McNab-Braeside’s Riverfest. With some vision and community participation, the dragon boat festival could grow into a celebration of all sorts of water craft.

Community participation is the key in ensuring the success of Arnprior’s two other major summer festivities, so include the Arnprior Fair Aug. 13-16 and the White Pine Festival Aug. 21-23 in your summer holiday plans.

By vacationing at home this summer, you’ll be encouraging local businesses and volunteers who help make our local communities a delightful place to live. And it will make your dollar stretch further too.

Important to register for a doctor if area is to attract more physicians To the Editor: After reading Dr. Mike Toth’s letter to the editor (Chronicle-Guide, July 16), I felt it necessary to add to his letter with comments on behalf of the Arnprior and Area’s Physician Recruitment Committee (PRC).

The goal of PRC is to ensure that every Arnprior and Area resident is able to have a local family doctor.

Our volunteers are proud to have played a key role in bringing two new family physicians (Drs. Fitzsimon and Nejad) into our community one year ago.

Arnprior is fortunate to have the Family Health Team (FHT) based model of practice available to new family doctors. However, as Dr. Mike Toth noted in his letter, the Ministry of Health slashed the number of team based positions available province wide by 50 per cent.

This quarter Arnprior was lucky enough to make the Ministry of Health’s list of underserviced communities, thus allowing us the opportunity to recruit a new doctor into the FHT model.

There is no guarantee that we will be on the list next quarter. It is essential for Arnprior to remain on the Ministry of Health’s list in order to make us an attractive practice location.

Based on population statistics, emergency room visits, pending doctor retirements and the number of new patients request that Drs. Fitzsimon and Nejad are still receiving, the committee knows that there is need for three new physicians over the next three years.

The Moth that wants to be a bird As I have stated many times, it is dangerous for us to generalize about Nature.

For example, if one were to say that caterpillars eat plants, he or she would only be mostly correct because even though the majority of butterfly and moth larvae do eat plant material, the caterpillars of the Harvester, a local butterfly, devour Woolly Aphids.

And if one were to state that butterflies fly in the daytime while moths fly at night, once again he or she would be only mostly correct for several species of moths do fly in sunlight.

Recently I encountered a number of day-flying moths along the Basin Road in Algonquin Park.

I was photographing butterflies when I noticed a small, brown creature hovering at Viper’s Bugloss blooms. Its wings beat so quickly that it looked not unlike a hummingbird.

In fact, every year readers ask me the name of the same hummingbird-like animal that hovers at their flowers. However, the animal in question is not a bird but a day-flying moth known as a Clearwing.

As I turned my focus onto the moth, which belonged to the Sphinx Moth family, I noticed a second one gleaning nectar from another plant. Then I spotted another and another, and then still more.

Eventually at least a dozen of these tiny brown helicopters were visible visiting bugloss and milkweed blossoms.

There are three species of Clearwings in our area, but only two are relatively common. The Hummingbird Clearwing and the Snowberry

Michael Runtz Nature’s Way Clearwing, which I was seeing, look alike, but the latter sports a reddish border on the wings that is usually visible while it hovers.

When a Clearwing Moth hovers, its long proboscis uncoils and inserts into the nectary of a flower.

The moth moves up a plant after first visiting its lowest blooms, which contain more nectar than those higher up on the stem. This is an intentional ploy by the plant, for when its lowest blossoms first open, they have their pollen-bearing parts partly blocking access to the nectar.

After the pollen is removed, the flower functionally becomes a female, and its sweet reward becomes richer and more attractive. Thus, an insect such as a Clearwing Moth is attracted first to a wildflower’s lowest blossoms, and as it feeds it deposits pollen it is carrying to those

As it works its way up the stalk, it encounters and picks up pollen from younger flowers, which are functionally male.

After the moth reaches the uppermost blossoms of a wildflower, it flies down to the lowest blooms of another plant, taking pollen with it and ensuring that cross-pollination occurs.

Milkweeds are just about finished flowering, and late-summer wildflowers such as Swamp Milkweed and Joe Pye-Weed are starting to

bloom. However, these wildflowers mainly provide nectar for butterflies, and the little Clearwing Moths will soon vanish from our area.

However, unlike their feathered counterparts, Clearwing Moths don’t migrate.

The moths die, leaving a legacy of small caterpillars that will become moths next year.

Volunteer efforts to improve Arnprior come to naught To the Editor: I surrender.

The result of nine years of volunteering to affect positive change in the Town of Arnprior have convinced me of the hopelessness of any further efforts of my part in this struggle.

Until there is a dynamic change to core vision of providing better communication,

improved professionalism, productive meetings, volunteer feedback and leadership that provides a clear vision for growth and teamwork, I have decided to shift my efforts to other challenges.

The Town of Arnprior has so much untapped potential and decades of missed opportunities. Unfortunately 60 per cent

of the Town’s majority voters are happy with the ‘status quo’, so there is no real push for dynamic change.

Even the several million dollars from our hydro dam was spent by a previous council down to $9,000 and then the multimillion dollar debt to the ratepayer was written off by our previous council. This

raised almost no concern from the public.

My efforts to get our downtown benches back on the sidewalks for three years have failed. My request to enforce the signage bylaw of removing or covering over closed business signs of 10 years plus or falling signs like Ken’s Kitchen resulted in silence.

My several suggestions in 2007 for recycling and street cleaning that are very successful and popular in Europe only resulted in a quip from the then mayor that “We are not Europe.”

An off-leash dog park could cost nothing like Ottawa did it and it even makes money.

Previous council committee said $27,000 and a unanimous ‘no’.

There have been so many attempts to help the Town of Arnprior from big box stores, bus stops to bike lanes, walking path over the rail bridge and a tourist centre.

My recent attempt this spring, was getting approval from the Canadian Science and Tech Museum Board to loan many exhibits free to the Town of Arnprior to boost tourism locally while the National Capital Museum undergoes major renovations for a few years. It appears our town has no mandate to showcase science exhibits and all I heard was silence from the Town of Arnprior since.

I believe it would have been an excellent precedent for Arnprior, but I often think outside the box.

Extracurriculars in jeopardy at local schools when classes resume Steph Willems

It likely won’t be school-asper-usual for Ontario students returning to class in September.

Escalations in labour action ramped up towards the end of the school year in May and June have given parents and administrators fair warning as to the degraded state of contract negotiations between the province, Ontario Public School Boards Association and teachers’ unions.

With students now enjoying their summer break, recent developments in the bargaining process designed to secure new contract agreements hint that a different type of break

could loom in the fall.

On Monday, the members of Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) officially became eligible to strike or start a work-to-rule campaign.

The union announced that its members are withdrawing from extracurricular activities, meaning sports, music, theatre and other such activities will not be going ahead when public schools re-open in September unless a deal is reached by then.

It is reminiscent of the teachers’ efforts to pressure then-premier Dalton McGuinty in negotiations in the fall of 2012.

Talks with the OSSTF and Elementary Teachers Federa-

tion of Ontario broke off earlier this year despite attempts at mediation, with local teachers ultimately withdrawing some administrative duties, rather than the strikes seen in two other districts in Ontario.

But now it’s not only the public schools that are being affected by the labour unrest.

On July 8, contract talks also broke off with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association, which put another group of teachers on the list of strike candidates.

“Our members are standing up for what’s right for the education system, principles the employer does not seem to be taking seriously,” said OECTA president Ann Hawkins in a statement.

In response, Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals said she remained hopeful that the teachers’ unions would return to the bargaining table.

The provincial government has remained adamant that there is no new money available with which to satisfy

union demands.

Thus, any concessions made by the province would have to be made up for elsewhere under their “net zero” bargaining stance.

However, union leaders insist the main points of dispute revolve around class sizes and

teacher autonomy.

Plane crash call Two OPP officers from the Renfrew-Arnprior detachment were called to the Sand Point dock last Friday to investigate a report of an airplane crashing into the Ottawa River.

The officers weren’t needed as the pilot and passenger in the small plane, which had just taken off from the Quebec side, were rescued, shaken but unhurt, by boaters after a wind gust flipped the plane. The plane was towed back to the Norway Bay area.

Crawlers and critters Arnprior’s Ontario Early Years hosted a show by Little Ray’s Reptiles on July 7. It was the first time for such a show at the Arnprior Family Pre-School Centre, said Karina Dewar, noting it was 100 per cent sponsored by Jim Flowers of Jim’s Auto Glass and Car Sales.

The kids and parents were able to see Fluffy the tarantula – with little tidbits of information about the critters along the way, such as more people are afraid of spiders than they are of death and that Spider-man the Gecko can make his tail fall off to evade predators.

New families can register their students online for public school Get the registration process started for your child for the 2015-2016 school year without leaving your home.

New students to the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) can now start the registration process online.

Families with students joining a Renfrew County public school for the first time, Kindergarten to Grade 12, can start the registration process from their desktop computer, laptop, tablet or even smartphone.

“This new process is another example of how the RCDSB continues to support families,” said Cathy McCann-Kyte, Superintendent of Education – Early Learning and Operations.

“The online registration for new students to our board makes registration easy and accessible for families. This process will also enhance and streamline the communication process between new families and our schools.”

The RCDSB has partnered with SRB Education Solutions to allow parents to start the registration process from the comfort of their own home. While parents will still have to come

in to either the school or board office to show proof of residency, birth and other documentation, their children will already be in the system and the visit will be more streamlined and much quicker.

Registration forms are completed and submitted online with an email receipt that the submission is being processed. Registration will not be confirmed until parents have visited the school with original documentation.

The new online registration system will help streamline the process as parents scramble to register their children for school during the summer months.

The online registration is easy to understand and simple to complete, with clear, concise instruction on the RCDSB website. Get the enrolment process for a new RCDSB student started without having to leave your front door.

Music festival to welcome ‘young performers’ at August concert The Ottawa Valley Music Festival has a proud tradition of encouraging talented young musicians through scholarships and by inviting young people from the Valley to perform at its concerts.

The Young Performers program began in the late 1990s and was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Eganville. On Sunday, Aug. 9, four of these young performers - now all grown-up - will return for a very special concert: Young Stars Return.

Trumpeter Alex Buttle, soprano Jessica Belanger, tenor Kevin Myers and cellist Brandon Wilkie will make a triumphant homecoming as they perform with the Ottawa Valley Music Festival in a program developed in collaboration with artistic director, Peter Morris.

The eclectic program will feature music by Schubert, Verdi, Strauss, Bartok, Gershwin, and Britten. The concert will also be the debut of the Ottawa Valley Music Festival’s new accompanist, Dian Wilkie.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. at Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church in Renfrew. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $10 for young adults, $5 for students (with ID), and free for children 12 and under.

The Madawaska Girls Peewee Hockey team are champions of the Ottawa Valley.

The Madawaska Mustangs advanced to the playoff finals against Pembroke after a round- robin playoff round. The Mustangs fought hard in the first game but were handed a devastating 3-0 loss.

The Mustangs knew they had to win game two to keep the series alive and they pulled it off by a score of 1-0.

The third and final game was a nailbiter. The Mustangs fired shot after shot against Pembroke, but they were all turned away until late in the first period when Janelle Russett dug the The Madawaska Girls Peewee Hockey Mustangs celpuck out of the corner and passed it to ebrate after a 3-0 win over Pembroke gave them the an awaiting Jadyn Stashick in front of Ottawa Valley title. the net. A big break for Madawaska came in the middle of the third period when Stashick and Russett rushed down the ice with a 2-on-1 advantage. Stashick fired the puck at the goalie, who stopped the shot but couldn’t control the rebound.

Russett quickly buried the rebound and put the Mustangs up 2-0.

Pembroke pulled its goalie seeking to keep its hopes alive, but Alyssa Davison added an empty-net goal to give the Mustangs to a 3-0 win and the Val80 ElgIn ST. W. ARnpRIoR ley title.

Gearing up for the provincials in McNab

Gout is referred to as a recurrent attack of an acute inflammatory arthritis in the joints. The joints are usually red, very tender, hot and swollen. Gout often sets in in the feet or hands, but there are many other forms of gout able to appear throughout the body. It is caused by elevated uric acid level in the blood. The uric acid crystalizes and these crystals can deposit in your joints, tendons and the surrounding tissue.

I see these uric acid crystals frequently, when patients seeks me out to have their blood analysed.

Besides of course many other things we find in the blood, the uric acid crystals are very easily characterized due to their unique shape. As part of the Live Blood Analysis, I provide guidelines how to rid the body of these toxins in order to prevent conditions like gout to become chronic.

But even more frequent, I am treating patients for another condition and as a side comment they’ll mention their gout attack and discomfort. So, it happened recently with an older lady I’ve been treating for a while. She started complaining of a swelling in her foot and the “damn” throbbing pain.

“I can’t even wear any shoes!” she said annoyed.

The gout had set in on her right foot, on top of the foot, underneath and in her big toe. I gave her some remedies and at her next visit she smiled and said in her raspy voice: “This gout stuff is great stuff. I even told my daughter about it. The swelling is down, the throbbing pain is gone and I am getting my shoes back on.” she smiled. “This is the best thing that ever hit the market!” she laughed.

Galetta lawn bowling teams put in a good show at provincials Peter Clark

The Galetta Lawn Bowls Club played host to 16 teams July 11-12 as the Ontario Men’s Triples Final was held at the local venue.

Among the 16 teams competing was the District 16 representative, which just happened to be the club’s own trio of skip Grant Fletcher, vice Bill Sheffield and lead Malcolm Rose.

The Galetta trio turned in a fine weekend with five games played.

The Fletcher group posted a 3-and-1 record before dropping a 15-7 decision to Rich Peart’s District 5 contingent in the B semifinal Sunday afternoon. Peart’s team included Charlie Lyall and Peter Clark (not this reporter).

The District 7 team of Colin Thomson, Darryl Fitzgerald and Mike Wagner captured the gold medal; while the District 4 squad of Brad Fleming, Larry McLellan

and Len Boreham took silver. The Peart trio captured the bronze medal. Both the Thomson and Fleming teams qualify for the Canadian Championships at the Willowdale Lawn Bowling Club in Toronto Aug. 16 to 22.

The opening ceremonies featured official flags, ceremonial piper Bob Smith leading the players onto the field, words of welcome from City of Ottawa Councillor Eli El-Chantiry, a toast to the piper, the singing of O Canada and a ceremonial ‘First Bowl’ delivered by Helen MacHardy. She and late husband Donald MacHardy were founding members, and instrumental in getting Galetta Lawn Bowling started.

Ontario Lawn Bowling convernor Elaine Houtby also spoke to the players, spectators and umpires.

“Let me congratulate all (16) district winners for getting here,” Houtby said. “Many thanks to Sandra Fletcher (Galetta Bowls Club) and her team of volunteers. I’m

sure everyone here will appreciate the wondered job they have done.”

Ladies in Smiths Falls

The Ontario Ladies Triples Final was also held over the weekend in Smiths Falls, and the Galetta Lawn Bowling Club represented District 16 there. Like their Galetta male counterparts, the team of skip Sandra Jefferies, vice Flo Silvestro, and lead Karen Oatman also played five contests, finishing with a 3-and2 record.

The Galetta ladies’ second loss came at the hands of the eventual gold medallists. The District 6 team of Marg Lepere, Sue Roth and Wendy Devonshire claimed the title. The silver medal-winning team from District 12 – Kelly McKerihen, Laura Seed and Gloria Cheung – will also advance to the Canadian Championships.

Team Green queens of women’s ball hockey at Nick Smith Centre The Arnprior Women’s Ball hockey season wrapped up July 13 with Team Green being declared the champions and Team Black runner-up.

The league, with six teams this year, began play in April in Arena B of the Nick Smith.

Team Green was led by Laura Graham, named the league’s most valuable player.

The league’s MVP forward was Kerri Ann Utronki of Team Red, while Anna Barr of Team Blue was named the MVP on defense.

Erika Haebecker of Team Red was given the Best Wipe Out award.

Each team gave out awards to its top players. The inaugural Arnprior Kids Fishing Derby July 11 was a big success, attracting about double the participants expected.

Event owner/organizer: Darren W. Wood reported he expected between 30 to 50 children at the first-time event on the Ottawa River at McLean Park, but 76 kids and 32 adults attended. Participants came from Arnprior, Renfrew, Pembroke, Pakenham, Kinburn and Ottawa.

Wood organized the event, with the Arn-

prior Fish and Game Conservation Club a major sponsor. Every child received a gift bag from the fish and game club.

As well, first- through fifth-place finishers received prizes donated by almost a dozen Arnprior areas businesses (O’Brien Theatre, Domino’s Pizza, TSC,Home Hardware, McDonald’s, Metro, MAC’s Convenience, Giant Tiger, Brian’s Spuds, Dairy Queen and PJ’s Restaurant).

“I have had the opportunity to run this same kids derby in various cities and towns throughout Ontario and felt it would be a good fit for Arnprior,” said Wood.

“And I could not be more pleased with not only the turn-out, but the generous support of the fish and game club as well as from business community in Arnprior.

“A community event is only as good as the people who support it and the community supported this event beyond my expectations.”

Wood said next year’s event is already in

the works with prizes that will include some kind of kid size boat as well as other major prizes.

“I am lucky enough to live in a town where city council encourages and supports event like the kids fishing derby and I have already contacted parks and rec’s Glenn Arthur about my next event aimed for the spring of 2016,” said Wood.

“This event would be the only one of its kind in Eastern Ontario that I am aware of.

“Details to follow in the coming weeks,” he promised.

Local dancers shine at Nationals The Arnprior School of Dance competitive dance team capped off a successful season with multiple first-place finishes at Shine Nationals June 29-July 4 in Niagara Falls.

The Arnprior area dancers went up against 359 other entries and performed their best dances of the season. The 50 member-team came home with several judges awards and 12 top-10 finishes.

Thomas Cherney won the Mr. Shine title and received the 10th highest mark in the competition. Rebecca Cowal was named runner-up for Miss Shine Acro.

The team’s senior musical group placed first in the Ultimate Shine Dance-off.

The Arnprior School of Dance has moved to a new larger location with plenty of parking at 44 MacDonald St. N (side entrance).

There is still has room in its summer dance camp, which runs July27 to 31.

The school’s fall dance registration dates are: Aug. 15 10 a.m.-noon; Aug. 24 6-8 p.m.; and Sept. 11 6-8 p.m.

Nirvana tribute band to play Arnprior A tribute band for one of the greatest grunge groups of the 1980s is coming to Arnprior for a gig this Saturday, July 25.

Publicist David Berardi touts April Hate as “undoubtedly the closest tribute band to Nirvana that one will ever see on stage.”

He points out they have the same equipment, same clothing and even the same mannerisms.

The band will play its tribute to Nirvana at the John St. Pub in downtown Arnprior.

April Hate started in 2007, born from the ashes of a band that began in 1992.

Today it is composed of three members: founder, leader and singer Christian Poirier (‘the epitome of Kurt Cobain’); Peter Tzaferis (Slaves On Dope) on drums; and Stephanie Lemieux (Death Proof, Ignition Riot) on bass.

Since its creation, April Hate has played a number of shows in Quebec, sometimes with guitarist François Gagnon (ex-Rags) and cellist Gael Huard.

No one won the $5,000 prize for a hole-in-one, but it was a winning event for Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home on June 20, when it hosted the second ‘First Day of Summer Golf Tournament’ at Mountain Creek Golf Course.

successful fundraiser for the agency.

Gauthier elected Arnprior Toastmasters president for 2015-16 On June 10, the Arnprior Toastmasters club held its annual induction ceremony to install executive officers for the upcoming year.

The club’s executive officers for 2015-2016 are president Susan Gauthier, vice-president-education Lynne Zander, vice-president-public relations/secretary Lenore Whelan, treasurer Gail Smith and sergeant-at-arms Brad Dota. Their duties began July 1.

The Club Mission is: “We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.”

Toastmasters international values are respect, integrity, service and excellence (RISE).

Toastmaster members ‘RISE’ to the occasion to complete tasks such as a 10-project speech assignment called Competent Communicator, which begins with members giving an introductory speech of 4 to 6 minutes called the LENORE WHELAN/SUBMITTED Ice Breaker.

Youngest and last surviving child of the late Louis Victor “L.V.” Pilon and the late Lena Marontate. Beloved wife and best friend of Thurston Smith. Predeceased by her first husband, Gerry Gratton (1977). Dearly loved mother of Paul Gratton of Toronto; Daniel Gratton (Brenda Stufko) of Ottawa and Louise Lalonde (Wilfred) of Greely. Cherished and proud “Gramma” of Dylan Lalonde. Predeceased by her 4 brothers: Frank Pilon (late Kaye); Vincent Pilon (late Cécile); Bill Pilon and Ambrose Pilon (late Gisèle) as well as her only sister, Olive Sutherland (late Robert “Bob”). Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mary Helen grew up in the Pilon’s Bakery in Vankleek Hill. She later left home to pursue a career in Nursing that brought her to Ottawa where she and Gerry Gratton raised their family. Following Gerry’s death in 1977, Mary Helen subsequently met and later married Thurston Smith and together they opened and operated The Book Den on MacLaren Street until its closing in 2014.

She will be lovingly remembered for her gentle and kind spirit as well as her unwavering faith in God. Friends were invited to join Mary Helen’s family during visitation at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Inc., 1200 Ogilvie Road, Ottawa on Sunday afternoon, July 19th from 2 to 4 p.m. and again on Monday morning, July 20th from 9:30 until 10:15 a.m. A Funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 400 St. Laurent Blvd., Ottawa on Monday morning at 11 o’clock. Interment followed at the Notre Dame Cemetery. In memory of Mary Helen, a donation to the Franciscan Mission Associates would be appreciated by her family. ROBILLARD, Hunter April 19, 2015 – July 6, 2015 After sharing life in his mother’s womb with his twin sister, Fawn, our Gentle Giant managed to survive 11 weeks in this life before succumbing to conditions that were more than he could handle.

Loved son of Kendra Robillard and Raymond Brosseau. Cherished greatgrandson of Marilyn Robillard (late Jack) and grandson of May Lebrun and Barry Robillard (Bonnie), Paul Brosseau and Jacqueline Brosseau and step-grandson of Barb Robillard. And then story time was over. Mother went into the house, and we kids scattered ... some to get cooled off in the Bonnecherre … and some to get a cup of ice-cold water from the well.

Ronny sort of slinked off towards the barn ... but I never took my eye off him. I knew he was up to something.

I saw him walking slowly over the barnyard, stick in hand poking the ground, eyes cast down ... and in the deepest concentration.

He finally found what he was looking for. It was a big black beetle. We called them June bugs, and they could be found in great abundance on the farm, and I hated them with a passion.

I wasted no time in asking Ronny what he intended to do with it. Now his eyes were barely visible between the lashes.

“I’m going to make a harness out of thread, and train this critter to perform, that’s what I’m going to do,” he said. “And I’m going to charge admission. Now, if you want to get to see it free, you better help me.”

I took the thread out of Mother’s sewing box ... heavy black thread she used for buttons for our winter coats.

He touched it with a finger. Then with a blade of grass. Finally he blew on it. It was either asleep or dead.

Seven pairs of eyes were glued to the beetle. Nothing happened. Emerson wanted his money back. So did Audrey.

Everett said he was going to the house to tell Mother who had no tolerance for inhumane actions towards animals, be they big or small.

Ronny knew he had to do something, or he was going to have to give back the pennies he had collected. “Now I ask you,” he said. “Have you ever seen a bug in a harness?”

We all agreed we hadn’t. “Have you ever seen a harness that small?” Again, we all said no.

“Then that’s what you’ve paid for. You’ve seen two things today you’ve never seen before ... the tiniest harness in Renfrew County ... and a bug tied into it.”

He dusted off his knees, left the bug where it was still motionless, rattled the coins in his pocket ... and headed for the pump for a drink.

“I’d say, you’ve got your money’s worth,” he said without looking back.

Once again, we had been had by our Montreal cousin.

Seniors atPROOF Home FORM yard sale best yet

Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home thanks everyone who donated and bought items at their annual Yard Sale on May 9. It was the best yet because of the weather, the number of volunteers and the financial reward, as $1,300 was raised. Without great volunteers such as Margot Levy, one of Seniors at Home’s oldest volunteers at 88 (“we are proud of that and so is she” and Linda Chalmers, right, ABMSH would not be able to host such successful events.

Ronny had moved over to the back of the silo so no one could see what he was doing. He figured if he could get the bug harnessed and trained before anyone saw him, he was more likely to get away with charging for the show.

The beetle was helpless on its back, but I was still terrified to give it more than an occasional glance.

Ronny fashioned a harness of sorts from the thread and wrapped it around the bug’s gyrating body. Then he flipped it over on a rock and with a small twig prepared to embark it on its education. It scurried in every direction, and each time Ronny would bring it back to a starting position.

This went on in the beating sun for what seemed like hours to me. I was anxious to get on with other things, and was reaching the conclusion that Ronny was never going to teach this beetle a thing. But every time I started to move away, Ronny hauled me back to hold the harness.

It became a battle of wills between the beetle and my Montreal cousin, and it very much looked like this was one war Ronny was not going to win. I might have known Ronny was not going to give up easily on what could be a lucrative venture. He dispatched me to the house to fetch the rest of the kids, and they were all to bring a cent with them if they wanted to see this spectacle.

I had no idea what they were going to see for a cent, but I did exactly as I was told.

Marcus lived a hard life on the streets of Arnprior for a couple of years, his beautiful coat was full of burrs and he was suffering from open sores and many cuts & scrapes. Mother talked endlessly about the sights of her beloved New York ... all the things you could do that didn’t cost a penny, and of spectacles she was sure you could find nowhere else in the world.

We hung onto every word, and in our mind’s eye, each one of us five children created our own images of the glories of this great and wonderful city.

One summer day, when our cousins were visiting from Montreal, was a day I would never forget. It was a hot and sticky day, and we had taken refuge in the grape arbour ... all sitting around Mother in the big wooden swing.

Someone was fanning her with a copy of the Renfrew Mercury, as she told of the wonders of that city. Stories we never tired of. Even young Ronny, that incorrigible cousin who wasn’t easily impressed, was spellbound, as she talked about trains that ran on tracks high above the streets, and a place called an automat, where you could buy your lunch for a dime from a little glass window in a wall.

And then she told us for the first time about a circus that even in our wildest imagination we couldn’t fathom.

It was a circus of fleas. She said they wore little harnesses, and their trainer showed them off in a magnified glass top case, and they obeyed his every command. We couldn’t imagine anything so fascinating.

Ronny’s eyes started to slit, and I could tell his fertile mind was working overtime, and that he was planning some deed, which was bound to get him into trouble.
