There will be no swimming this fall at the Nick Smith Centre. Arnprior parks and recreation director Glenn Arthur explained that all programs from September through to November will be cancelled as the pool is shut down for rehabilitation work. St. Lawrence Pools has been contracted to do the work at a price of almost $390,000. Arnprior council approved a bylaw to award the $389,109.29 contract to

St. Lawrence at its meeting on July 13. “It is asset management,” said Arthur. “It’s to make sure everything is running properly. “The pipes will be dug up and replaced. They are 38 years old and we want them up to code.” There have been problems in the past few years with leaks in the piping. The pool had to be closed at times as it was necessary to find a leak and fix it. “The pool will also be sand-blasted and the inside of the pool has to be resurfaced,” said Arthur.

A community-wide effort is needed to ensure there are enough doctors serving Arnprior and area, say members of the local Physician Recruitment Committee. Their campaign may not receive as high a profile as some others in the community do, but it’s just as important if not more so, they add. Arnprior-McNab-Braeside physi-

cian recruitment co-ordinator Laura Tromp says the committee formed a couple of years ago to tackle the problem of replacing retiring doctors successfully attracted two new doctors last year. But it’s no time to be complacent. “We were in a crisis mode … we don’t’ want to be there again,” she says, noting Arnprior needs three more doctors over the next three years. See COMMUNIITY, Page 6
