has confirmed what many Arnprior residents already suspected: Ontario’s tallest tree resides in Gillies Grove. The majestic eastern white pine was offi.COM cially declared the province’s highest tree in a .COM ceremony in Gillies Grove last Friday. The NCC had announced the day before at Ontario’s Biodiversity Summit in Niagara Falls that the “magnificent” 47-metre (154-feet) pine is the province’s tallest tree. The NCC says the finding has been confirmed by Forests Ontario’s Honour Roll recognition program. To give some perspective, the tree, being dubbed Ontario’s natural skyscraper, is taller than a 13-story building, said NCC assistant conservation biologist, who emceed the ceremony in the Grove. Giroux said NCC officials and forests specialists recently discovered the “hidden gem” within the protected forest in the NCC-run Gillies Grove. Visitors have been walking by the giant tree for generations without suspecting it had such esteemed stature, she noted. It’s trees like this one that are home to a variety of wildlife from squirrels to owls, woodpeckers and beautiful songbirds, she added. The ceremony was attended by NCC officials, the family of long-time Friends of Gil-

The 70 young students, accompanied by teachers Amber Barclay and Lori MacKenzie, were intrigued by the size of the tree and wondered how big the ladder must have been for its height.CA.CA to be measured. The declaration was met with delight by Arnprior officials.“What a great discovery to have Ontario’s tallest white pine in Gillies Grove,” said Tara Pocket, vice-president of the Friends of Gillies Grove. “The community worked so hard to protect the Grove years ago – this is a wonderful reward for having stopped this beautiful woods from being developed.” “We are very proud to be able to welcome all our guests to the home of Ontario’s tallest pine tree,” added Arnprior Mayor David Reid. “Please take the time to come see what the Gillies Grove and the Town of Arnprior have to offer. “Arnprior is a town which offers many wonderful natural attributes to explore and enjoy,” said the mayor. “The Gillies Grove is one of our beautiful assets; where residents and visitors alike can enjoy the allure of spending time exploring an incredible old growth forest in the JOHN CARTER/Metroland town ‘Where the Rivers Meet’.” St. Joseph’s Kindergarten students look up, way up

Arnprior Council has opted to tackle the downtown revitalization project in two years rather than five. The two-year implementation strategy was approved at council’s meeting Monday. The planned cost to update infrastructure in the downtown core and make the area more visitor-friendly is $10.4 million. The project would have cost a million more if it had been spread out over five years. The work will include improvements to John Street North from Madawaska Street to William Street West; Elgin Street West from Daniel Street North to Madawaska Street; McGonigal Street West from Daniel Street North to end (west of Edward Street North); and Hugh Street North from McGonigal Street West to Elgin Street West. As well as repaving, water and sewer lines will be updated, as will be sidewalks. Trees and benches will be added to improve the streetscape downtown. See BULK Page 6
