An almost audible collective sigh of relief was released last Friday when Robert Reid agreed to take over the Arnprior Golf Club. Reid, former owner of an Arnprior automobile dealership and one of the town’s sharpest business minds, stepped up to save the historic club from possible bankruptcy. The existing debt is considerable, membership is in decline, the clubhouse is showing its age, and the industry is at a standstill. But the feeling among many golfers in the area is that if anyone can chip the place out of the rough, it is Reid. “I think he’ll be very successful, club president Joe Ferrari said. “Put it this way: he’s not the type to lose. Still, total debt is somewhere near $700,000. Membership is at 225, almost half what it was 15 years ago. The number of golf courses in the region has skyrocketed, even as interest has levelled off. But Reid, as a private owner, will have a significant advantage over the member-owned club when he takes over on May 1. He won’t require consensus from a board of directors before making decisions. “Too many chiefs and not enough Indians: that’s been an aspect, Ferrari said. “Look, we’re all volunteers, but everyone has an opinion and a vote is a vote. There was little disagreement when the board laid out options for the members at an April 7 meeting. At that time creditors were mounting pressure and as many as

However, Reid is clear that the course will see significant changes beginning with the name. It will be called the Sand Point Golf Course. And it will be a family business that is welcoming of the public. The perception that the 91-year-old course is for members only should decline. The customers Reid wants to attract are not just golfers. He is going after restaurant patrons as well. The upstairs banquet room with its panoramic view of the Ottawa River will be updated and sectioned off.

three businessmen showed an interest including Braeside’s Sean Black, who has done well for himself with restaurant franchises. Members – called debenture holders – voted 142-3 in favour of selling. They voted unanimously in favour of selling to Reid even with no other official offers on the table. “He presented a good business plan, said Ferrari, who owns the Dairy Queen on Madawaska Boulevard. “He isn’t going to turn it into another (residential) development. That was the rumour. That’s not his vision. It’s been very positive. Reid even offered five-year discounts to the debenture holders, and is honouring prepaid memberships and booked events.
