An award winner at the 14th annual Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce made an announcement of interest to area consumers.

Karen Gilks accepted the Business Appreciation Award under the Township of McNab/Braeside category.

She also made it known that Gilks Signs & Trophies will be offering sporting items, now that Play It Again Sports has shut down.

“We are going to open up a sports store,” Gilks said on stage, with husband Gary at her side. “So when you break that hockey stick you don’t need to go to Ottawa.”

Since 1982 when the store was in Arnprior — now on River Road just outside town limits — Gilks has generously given to sports teams and athletes in the area. Karen said it is smart strategy for every local business.

“We are happy to see the town grow,” she said. “We take so much so to give back is important.”

Town supports autism awareness initiatives The Town of Arnprior has shown its support for autism awareness.

April 2 was proclaimed World Autism Awareness Day in Arnprior and the town once again participated in the Raise the Flag and Light it up Blue initiatives to foster acceptance for individuals living with autism spectrum disorder, and support the day-to-day issues faced by people with autism and their families.

On April 2, blue lights illuminated

town hall and the Arnprior and District Museum clock tower. On April 3, a flag-raising ceremony was held and the Autism Awareness flag was raised at town hall. In October 2012, Bill S-206, An Act respecting World Autism Awareness Day, was fast-tracked and passed in the House of Commons. This means that each year April 2 is recognized officially as World Autism Awareness Day in Canada. The passing of this bill dem-

onstrates that Canadian lawmakers care about autism and autism awareness.

Autism spectrum disorder occurs in one in 66 Canadian youth ages five-17, affecting boys at a rate five times higher than girls. Through improved public awareness, the message to the people and families affected by autism spectrum disorder living in our community and the province is loud and clear — Your struggles matter to all Ontarians.

The LCBO in Arnprior could be moving from its Daniel Street location to one near No Frills.

A public hearing to discuss the move to the parking lot at 39 Winners Circle Dr. was set for Tuesday, April 10 at town hall. The minor variance application presented at the Committee of Adjustment asks permission for relief from a zoning rule: decrease the front yard depth from 10.5 metres to six.

The standalone store facing The Prior Sports Bar & Restaurant fits a pattern for retail developments in recent years, said town planner Robin Paquette.

The larger malls are being replaced by individual entrance businesses backed onto roads and in clusters often called power centres.

Those at Baseline and Woodroffe, and Strandherd and Woodroffe in Ottawa are recent examples.

“It’s very typical,” Paquette said. “Their layout is to be a standalone.”

There are no rules against LCBO stores visible from highways, and many are near restaurants that serve alcohol. The required number of parking spots for all businesses using the lot will be achieved.

The retailer would rent from the owners of President’s Choice and No Frills, bumping up tax revenue for the town. However, the current location may fall back to vacancy, which would mean less tax revenue.

Paquette isn’t concerned the large location at Daniel and William streets will stay empty long. The municipality would like to see a structure with commercial outlets on the ground floor and residential units above.

“We’re hoping so,” she said. “The official plan calls for mixed use, so we’d encourage some intensification. It’s a prominent corner.”

Golf tournament to benefit addiction treatment centre

Work planned on the Madawaska Bridge next summer and the following will cause some disruption for Arnprior travellers.

The bridge will be reduced to a single lane and one sidewalk during rehabilitation of the 44-yearold structure. Major delays in the planning process could see the two-year project pushed back to 2020 and 2021.

The work – including expansion joint replacements, west abutment repairs, approach slab replacements, and repaired parapet walls – should last 25 years.

A presentation at the April 9 town council meeting by county public works director Steve Boland shared plans to date and asked for municipal input.

The town owns the watermain on the structure, and is responsible for maintaining sidewalks streetlights, along with the pedestrian path under the west abutment.

Does the town want to alter the sidewalks along with bridge repairs? Three options mentioned include: • A basic rehabilitation with relocated utilities would cost between $6.2- and $7-million; • With sidewalks widened by two metres, the cost jumps to between $6.5- and $7.4-million; • With a single three-metre sidewalk on the north side (none on

south), the cost jumps again to between $10- and $10.8-million.

It didn’t take long for Mayor David Reid and most councillors to say spending about $2 million for a nicer sidewalk on the side overlooking the weir is too much.

Reid was told the hefty price tag is due to drainage changes, more structure material (a barrier wall between the sidewalk and vehicular traffic would be needed) and the sheer length of the bridge.

However, council did acknowledge that crossing the bridge is a risky, unpleasant venture for pedestrians and cyclists. Reducing the vehicular lanes is an option, but they are pretty narrow as is; having a narrow sidewalk on the south side and wider on the north is also possible.

Regardless of the final outcome, the bridge walls will be slightly higher with a single rail.

Town staff will study the issues, including what to do about the watermain, if decorative lighting is worthwhile, and get back to council – likely for the May 14 meeting.

The county, along with other stakeholders such as Bell Canada, Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, and the provincial Ministry of Transportation should hear the town’s input later that month.

A public meeting for residents and Arnprior businesses explaining the plan will take place soon after that.

The second anniversary of Chris Walsh’s tragic death was last week on, Easter Monday.

Now the family is ready to honour his memory with an event that occupied much of his time: a golf tournament.

“He would think it would be a good idea,” said Diane Swaine, his mother.

“He spent a lot of time at Madawaska Golf Club. They were very good to Chris, very kind to him.”

Held at Madawaska on June 2, rain or shine at 1 p.m., the Swing in the Memories of Chris Walsh is a four-person scramble style tournament that caps off with a barbecue dinner.

Registration deadline is May 25.

Walsh was more than an addict, too.

He was a fairly decent golfer; invested in a good set of clubs; spent quite a bit of time working on his swing.

“He loved golf and respected the facility (at Madawaska),” Swaine said. “I don’t know how many times I dropped him off there.”

The cost to play in the inaugural Swing in the Memories of Chris Walsh is $75 per person, which includes cart and awards for top teams.

Connected to your community

A nation in mourning

It’s unbelievable. Unfathomable. Horrific.

The stories and photos coming out of Saskatchewan following Friday’s deadly crash that claimed 15 lives and injured 14 others from the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team have been nothing short of mind-numbing.

The players on this junior hockey team, 17 to 21 years of age, their coaching and support staff, could have been anyone, on any bus, in smalltown Canada.

It wasn’t long ago members of Renfrew’s own junior hockey team gathered in hospital and at churches and funeral homes following a tragic crash that killed two players and injured two others. That experience underscored for us the incredible healing power of community.

As we get to know the people of Humboldt, the pain and suffering of a nation is front and centre.

Our junior hockey teams, or minor hockey teams for that matter, it could have been them.

It’s not like we haven’t thought about that already, and perhaps that’s why it’s been so easy for Canada to come together as a nation – it’s what we do. We support each other, through tragedies like this. We offer money, food, condolences, floral tributes, our hearts, thoughts, and our prayers.

“Hockey is a community, no matter where we play,” said one local coach and hockey dad. “It’s not just a sport, it’s who we are.”

Local condolences are pouring in. The #putyoursticksout campaign saw numerous families and agencies pay tribute with sticks placed outside doors. Teams and officials paid tribute with unity circles in rinks. Students are wearing their jerseys to school April 12 in honour of the victims. The Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe page has reached over $6 million and the money keeps coming. The Town of Arnprior announced Monday night it will donate to the cause.

To the families of the victims, may you continue to find strength in the rally of the nation.

Cousin Ronny’s antics frowned on at school and the farm, says Mary It wasn’t unusual for my Montreal cousins, Ronny and Terry to come to the farm in Renfrew County at any time of the year.

Spring came early that year, and with it came Aunt Helen with Ronny and Terry in tow.

All she did was drop them off, have one night’s sleep, and was back on the train to Montreal the next day.

You’d never know Terry was in the house, but Ronny was a different story.

All Mother had to do was pack another sandwich in the lunch bag, and off Ronny went to the Northcote School with the rest of us.

Well, it didn’t take long for Ronny to be up to his usual tricks at school.

He was back to eating chalk, throwing spit balls, and dunking Cora’s long braids into the ink well on his desk where he sat behind her.

home with my sister Audrey to mother.

“Straighten him up, or keep him at home.” Saturday couldn’t come soon enough for me!

But all that really meant was Ronny’s antics just moved from the Northcote School to the farm.

His first target was the old gobbler who didn’t like Ronny any more than Ronny liked him.

Audrey said gobblers had good memories. Using an empty grain bag as a shield, Ronny taunted the gobbler

until it was going crazy trying to nip at Ronny’s legs.

It took Father to bring the fight to a close by grabbing the bag, and sending Ronny over the fence.

Terry would eat anything Mother put before him.

Not Ronny.

At supper that Saturday, we were having sauerkraut, salt pork and turnips, all of which Ronny hated.

Now, how Ronny did it I didn’t know, but his plate was empty before I hardly got started.

After our dessert of chocolate cake, Ronny stood up, and you didn’t have to wear glasses to see Ronny’s pockets on his pants, bulging.

I knew then where the food on his plate went to.

I looked over at Father, who would never tolerate such nonsense from us kids.

his tea was cooled down in his saucer, and headed for the rocking chair by the Findlay Oval.

By bedtime, Ronny had managed to have a fight with Emerson, who was twice his size, steal Terry’s crayons as we sat around the old pine table, and knock down Earl’s house of cards.

But the night was young.

Before we climbed the stairs for bed, Ronny managed to upset his chocolate milk all over the table.

Mother frantically tried to wipe it up with her apron so that it wouldn’t ruin her diaries she worked on every night.

The mess was terrible, and it took both Mother and Audrey to clean it up.

Thankfully, before it reached Mother’s precious diaries.

He also managed to steal Terry’s cookie when he wasn’t looking.

He must have been tired out from his day of antics, because even before I went upstairs, there wasn’t a peep coming down the stairwell.

“I’ll bet my last dollar that one day we’ll read about that lad in the Renfrew Mercury. And it won’t be a writing you’d want to cut out and put into the family bible.”

Giants frequent local waters MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

When it comes to animals, our species has always been impressed by size.

Big mammals like moose attract considerably more attention than do mice.

People journey to foreign continents to see elephants and giraffes while few would walk a block to see a snowshoe hare or a red squirrel. And birds as large as eagles never fail to elicit excitement when sparrows and their kin bring only yawns.

Perhaps it is their size that draws our eye to great blue herons, now just returning from their winter retreats.

Five feet tall and owning a wingspan that exceeds six feet, herons are among the largest birds on this continent. Yet, while the sighting of an eagle always seems noteworthy, few people mention with great excitement an encounter with a great blue heron.

Perhaps that’s because herons are far commonly encountered than are eagles. We see them on creeks, rivers, and shallow bays of lakes. We often see them flying over highways, their long necks folded back into an S and their long legs sticking out behind as their ponderous wing beats carry them slowly through the air. In spring and summer, herons seem ubiquitous.

Still, they are fascinating birds.

Their long legs serve them well as they stalk frogs and fish in shallow water. Their spear-like bills snatch (not spear) fish and other prey, which can include voles, chipmunks, snakes, frogs, and occasionally other birds.

Meals are swallowed whole but sometimes a few whacks are required to subdue fish with spiny fins before they are swallowed. Prey is located visually and herons have remarkable patience in standing still until something of interest moves below them. When it does, they slowly lean forward, cocking their neck for a rapid thrust. When it shoots out, the head vanishes below the water’s surface for a second or two, reappearing most times with a small fish clenched in the bill.

Like all birds, herons spend a lot of time keeping their feathers in good order for they not only keep their owners warm and dry but also allow them to impress the opposite sex.

During the breeding season, great blue herons sport long, thin, white ornamental feathers on the back of their head (occipital plumes), breast (pectoral plumes), and shoulder region (scapular plumes). More than a dozen courtship displays have been described, with many of these involving the plumes. Displays include the “stretch display” in which an unmated male extends his neck and erects his neck plumes, and the “snap display” in which a heron erects its head, neck, and breast plumes and lowers its head, loudly clapping its bill together with

“Once upon a time people always had a set of good underwear that was never worn,” Carlile explained.

“Maybe some older folks still do. They would keep it just for good – but good never happened.”

The wedding night that never happened; maybe the negligee is still in a closet. Any that are donated must be at least 50 years old, she said. Bathing suits will also be welcomed.

The exhibit could become a travelling one,

meaning Arnprior’s undergarments could be on display at museums across Canada. They have a decent collection already from some underwear made in Arnprior.

“We are not just about lumber, although lumber is important to the region,” Carlile said.

“But lumber doesn’t appeal to everyone.

So we are trying to think outside the box.”

The travelling exhibit My Tattoo, My Story was a huge hit, bringing in many new visitors who might not have been to the museum before. Carlile is hoping for the same with Arnprior Undercover.

Here is your opportunity to declutter at a reasonable price.

Concert pianist shares gift April 22 Concert pianist Sylvia Etcheverry moved to Arnprior with her family in July 2016.

While attending the piano concert held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church last October, Etcheverry birthed the idea to hold a concert of her own, and approached Rev. Hooper to seed that plan.

The rest, as they say, is history.

An engaging Classical Piano Concert is now scheduled for Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m. at the church.

Etcheverry’s piano career started when she was eight years old, taking lessons with Hungarian pianist and teacher Laszloffy Margit, who was trained at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Etcheverry was also to attend the same academy, but her destiny changed when she met the love of her life, José. She continued her piano studies and completed her Grade 10 piano at the National Conservatory of Music in Santiago, Chile, and in 1978 she and José immigrated to Canada.

After obtaining her Performer’s ARCT from the Royal Conservatory, Etcheverry began giving recitals, and since 1997 has graced audiences

with her playing in several locations throughout Ontario. Her love of music and entrepreneurial spirit caused Etcheverry and a colleague, Anne Roveda, to open and direct a musical education business in Mount Albert, Ont. Called “Orffans,” the business’s name was taken from the Orff Approach and method of teaching music, which incorporates music, movement, drama and speech into lessons that mimic a child’s world of play. It was developed by German composer Carl Orff and his colleague Gunild Keetman in the 1920s.

During the 17 years of “Orff-ans” success, Etcheverry also ran a thriving music studio in her own home, in Mount Albert. The scheduled concert promises to thrill the audience as Etcheverry entertains with a number of classical piano pieces, including music by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Albeniz, Granados, Satie and others.

Join Etcheverry at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian’s church for this afternoon of beautiful music, delivered by an accomplished pianist. Refreshments will be served following the concert, and a free-will offering is appreciated.

The mercurial, five time Juno-nominated/seven Canadian Folk Music Award winning mando maestro Andrew Collins will perform in Arnprior this spring. Collins brings his Trio and their popular collision of bluegrass, folk, jazz, classical and swing, not to mention a dizzying number of instruments on stage in the ambiance of the Arnprior Public Library on April 21 at 8 p.m.

“The acoustics are second to none,” says head librarian Karen DeLuca. “Moveable shelves allow the space to be transformed, and the space has hosted a myriad of musical genres – from blues to classical.”

Andrew Collins finds himself – through no actual fault of his own – at the epicentre of Canada’s burgeoning acoustic/ roots music scene.

He didn’t invent it – but he’s certainly a major contributor, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking String Quartet, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and, more recently, the Andrew Collins Trio.

As Collins gathers up innumerable awards and nominations by these various ensembles, Collins is zeroing in on the work he does with his beloved trio: fellow string guru Mike Mezzatesta, whose versatility and mastery shine through on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and mandola, and in-the-pocket James McEleney, holding it down on the bass, mandocello and vocals.

Mackay Manor seeks support for women’s addiction facility TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Mackay Manor (MM) is demanding financial support from the provincial government for a new Women’s Residential Addiction Facility in Renfrew County.

Along with Bernadette McCann House, Mackay Manor officials are set to launch a petition “seeking support from the people of Renfrew County to demand that the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Fund a Women’s Residential Addiction Program.”

MM has been in existence since 1975 in Renfrew, serving close to 4,000 male clients.

There have been discussions since 1987 to have a women’s treatment centre and they came close to having one in Horton in 2013 but were unable to secure a letter of intent for funding.

Tom Carroll, executive director of MM, knows the time is now for a treatment centre.

“The longer we wait the more people are going to die,” said Carroll.

MM gives priority to clients living in the county but as it is provincially

funded, the centre helps people from all over Ontario.

On the flip side of that, the latest research MM has conducted shows in an 18-month period 160 women had been referred out of the county for treatment to Ottawa, Toronto, Brockville or North Bay. Leigh Sweeney, executive director at Bernadette McCann House, said a women’s centre is needed because this service is not available in Renfrew County.

Women need something closer because once they leave the county it becomes complicated, she said.

“Many women who require that service have to leave the county and that means leaving their kids.

That means they have to make choices and usually that means staying with their kids so it’s not successful that way.

And we have one for men and we need one for women,” said Sweeney.

“It is an issue in the county, addictions are very prevalent and they affect kids, and going forward in our community, we need to look out for one another and to me this is a great example of that.”

Carroll is encouraging people to sign the petition and do more to show support for the new centre.

“We are going to ask the people of Renfrew County to write letters to their MPP demanding that the government fund this program for women,” said Carroll.

“There is a real lack of interest from the ministry to give annualized funding to programs.

They are fine with one-time funding but they don’t want to commit to annualized funding.”

To combat this lack of enthusiasm from the government and the Local Health Integration Network, Carroll says they are trying a different strategy with the petition and the letter writing campaign.

“We need the people, we need to come in the other way and have the taxpayer and the people of Renfrew County demand now that they support this service,” said Carroll, who also wants to raise $250,000 to prove this point even further.

Things are falling into place to get a new centre off of the ground after an anonymous benefactor purchased the Deacon House located at 358 Pembroke St. E. The building has 14 bedrooms and is 9,000 square feet.

“It purely coincidence, last summer I was asked to go and look at this empty building … the owner said do you have any ideas and I said absolutely I got ideas,” said Carroll.

He would not disclose how much the building cost but is very grateful it was purchased on their behalf last summer.

“That’s someone who is very interested in helping the people of Renfrew County and they recognize the fact that there is a lack and a big gap of services for women,” said Carroll.

“We went ‘Wow, maybe this is going to happen and we will be able to get our women’s treatment centre after all.’ ” The organizations have secured a funding agreement with Infrastruc-

The goal is to have it open in 2020.

Another recent change, a former fee-for-service addiction treatment

centre located in Pembroke, has become available as well.

Carroll’s goal is to have two buildings in Pembroke: one as a treatment centre and the other will be an ongoing support building.

The vision with the new centre would also include a Hub for Women’s Addiction and Mental Health needs in Renfrew County.

The Village of Calabogie was brimming with Ontario’s top under 16 ski racers March 19 to 25. Calabogie Peaks and the Calabogie Ski Racing Club hosted Alpine Ontario’s prestigious annual weeklong event that crowns the best ski racers at the U16 age level.

Over 150 competitors came from all over the province and western Quebec for the opportunity to compete in Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G and Dual ‘head to head’ Slalom events.

Brain Ivay, president of the Calabogie Racing Club described the event as a tremendous success.

“Most of the athletes and their families had not been to Calabogie, or if they had, it was many years ago. They were amazed at the variety of the terrain, the quantity of snow, and the high quality of conditions this late in the ski season.

Paul Murphy, Calabogie Peaks’ president, described the event as a major gain for Calabogie and Renfrew County.

“The Ontario Cup filled all the tourist facilities in Calabogie and neighboring areas for over a week – the community’s shops, restaurants and bars were hopping and the event was a huge contributor to our local economy”.

In recognition of the event’s significance, Murphy presented a Calabogie Peaks check for $1,500 the Calabogie Racing Club thanking Club president Ivay and all club volunteers for putting on a week of successful professional racing and showcasing Calabogie and everything it has to offer.

(Calabogie) 27th, James Gaffney (Deep River) 32nd and Jack Carnahan, (Kanata) 47th. Out of 65 girls who raced, Bailey Stonham was 31st.

Calabogie Ski Racing Club is a competitive alpine ski racing program focused on the development of youth into competitive athletes and responsible young adults.

The club delivers an athlete-centered program that encourages personal growth and develops individual potential. It is coach-driven and supported by a parent and volunteer infrastructure.

The club adheres to the structure established by it’s governing body, Alpine Canada Alpin, and is an active member within the National Capital Division of Alpine Ontario.

Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews as well as so many wonderful friends within the L’Arche community and beyond who have supported and loved her throughout her life. Her pleasant demeanor, her infectious smile and her genuine interest in others will be missed.
