Daniel development to be ‘sympathetic’ to heritage value Derek Dunn

The controversial proposal to alter an historic property along Daniel Street was the topic of a public meeting on Monday night.

Held during the regular Arnprior

council meeting, the session attracted more than half a dozen opponents who came out to register their concerns. Devalued heritage, tree loss and traffic were raised.

Town planner Robin Smith explained that the home at 30 Daniel St. North would be converted into three apart-

ments.

Another three would be included in an addition that is roughly the same size as the home.

Another six semi-detached homes would be built at the back of the property.

Owners plan to keep home, some trees Continued from front

Striking success L’Arche Arnprior held a bowlathon on March 12 at the Arnprior Bowling Centre. The fundraiser was to improve the quality of life for its members and give them more meaningful days. The event raised more than $1,000 for L’Arche. Among those showing up to participate in the fundraiser are ‘hippies’ Russel O’Brien and Tracy Tenedero, all smiles at the event.

Twelve parking spots, along with entrance and exit driveways would complete the project.

However, first up to speak was the property owners’ engineering consultant Murray Chown. He spoke forcibly about the presumably undesirable things the owners could have done to the property, which has several large trees surrounding a 130-year-old brick home and aging barn.

He explained how there would be no public meeting whatsoever if the owners decided to demolish the house and build an auto shop, or a hotel, or a fast-food outlet.

“Instead, their intention is to maintain the existing house with a sympathetic addition,” Chown said.

“My clients want a unique residential enclave that maintains the existing house, with low scale semidetached.”

He has been a project manager in town for 20 years. This is the first time he has taken on a real estate client. And he only agreed to do it if the owners agreed to protect and maintain the character of the house.

On the topic of parking and traffic, Chown said the County of Ren-

frew’s planning department has no concerns with traffic.

“It’s not going to generate a significant amount of traffic,” he said.

On trees, he talked about the hope to maintain the tree-lined laneway that parallels the former CN rail trail.

“We will endeavour to save as many of those trees as possible.”

When Chown finished, Coun.

Dan Lynch asked staff if the house has a heritage designation. It does not.

Artist Kevin Dodds was next to speak. He wanted to know if someone besides the owners evaluated what “sympathetic” means in relation to keeping the home’s historic characteristics. Smith said the town has a list of heritage features that will be compared with the work done.

Dodds knows someone who might be able to restore the barn and sell it.

The name was to be passed to Smith.

A second opponent was unimpressed with the conceptual drawing the owners submitted to the town.

She talked of three mature trees recently lost in the area and the benefits trees bring in terms of oxygen, shade, wildlife habitat and aesthetics for tourism.

She is concerned too much pave-

ment and foundations will mean not enough soil for the remaining trees.

They could starve at the root and die in a few years.

It was also noted that the municipality is trying to make the town more people- and visitor-friendly.

Removing attractive, shade-producers doesn’t help.

Laurie Dougherty talked about the “intrinsic heritage value” of the home, despite not being officially designated as such. She, too, would like to see more details on what the owners mean by “sympathetic.”

She said as they are asking the town for exceptions to its rules, the least they can do is provide more than basic information.

“If they are asking for exemptions, they should provide some,” Dougherty said.

Another opponent asked about possible soil contamination since the property is across the road from a former gas station.

The owners did an environmental assessment. There is no contamination.

Council accepted the submissions, both oral and written, for consideration.

It will vote on the issue at a future meeting.

Gallant apologizes for ham fundraiser that used fallen soldier Derek Dunn

Cheryl Gallant apologized on Thursday afternoon, March 10, for a political fundraising email that outraged many in the military and the general public.

The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP’s statement, in full, reads: “Earlier this week, a fundraising email in my name from my Electoral District Association raised attention.

“I have spent my entire life and political career defending and advocating for the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces, especially with Garrison Petawawa located in my riding.

“I included a photo of Corporal Cirillo as a way to honour him. In my view, and that of many others, he is a Canadian hero who should not be forgotten and whose memory should be celebrated. However, given the email was a fundraising request, I should not have included that photo.

I apologize for doing so.

“Funds already raised

through this email appeal will be presented to the Stand on Guard Fund for the families of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Office Patrice Vincent.”

Gallant’s fundraising email with the subject line ‘Terrorists in our midst’ was sent on March 2. It contained a photo of an unnamed Cirillo, the War Memorial sentry killed by a lone gunman in 2014.

The email continues to anger many on social media websites and the story keeps growing as newspapers and broadcasters across the country produce articles about it.

Beyond the Cirillo aspect, there have been accusations of racism for linking immigrants and refugees with terrorists.

Gallant attempted to quash the backlash with a March 4 statement from her Electoral District Association (EDA) president that reads, in full: “Thank you to all who responded to our letter: loyalty is what makes good citizens.

“Cheryl and I are pleased to let you know that a donation will be

made to the Stand on Guard Fund in support of the families of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

“Sincerely, Chris Brown, EDA president, Cheryl Gallant, MP Renfrew-NipissingPembroke.”

Days before the March 10 apology statement, Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose said that Gallant “has taken that back and apologized for it.”

On March 9, Gallant sent Metroland Media a letter to the editor referencing, not the ham fundraiser, but a second

aspect of the news outlet’s story: her lambasting Liberal MP Karen McCrimmon – who is retired from the military - for not participating in an ongoing campaign in support of military families.

She said, in full: “It was with considerable surprise I read the story (subtitled) ‘MP chastises veteran McCrimmon for not wearing red on a Friday’.

“For the benefit of your readers, here is some of that exchange that was omitted in your story from the February 19, 2016 Hansard, which is the official proceedings of the House of Commons. I can assure you it was not ‘yelled’ as alleged in your article.

“Mrs. Cheryl Gallant (Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, Conservative): ‘Mr. Speaker, today in the valley it is known as Red Friday. During the Afghanistan mission, two military wives, Lisa Miller and Karen Boire, started a tradition that spread right across Canada, wearing red on Friday to remember every week the soldiers who gave their lives and spilled their blood in Afghanistan.

‘How can the member over there stand under the pretext of representing military families when today the minister admitted to withdrawing the CF-18s before putting other proper protection in place?

The best way to ensure that

military families are taken care of is to ensure that their loved ones come home all in one piece.’

“Mrs. Karen McCrimmon: ‘Mr. Speaker, The honest thing to admit is that I got splashed yesterday. The nice gray suit I normally wear with my red shirt, well, I am afraid it was unsuitable to be worn this morning. Sometimes those kinds of things just happen.”

Gallant’s letter to the newspaper concluded: “The next time you get a so-called hot tip from a defeated candidate and his version of cynicism and fear that did not work for him in the last election, you should hit the delete button.”

Overturned truck An overturned transport truck slowed traffic on Hwy. 29 last week. The single vehicle accident near Shaw Road, between Pakenham and Arnprior occurred in morning. By late afternoon emergency workers were still emptying goods, mostly groceries.

Syrian family flees Aleppo before mass exudos The kids ran about the wood floors and laughed with Lowe’s grandson.

1.) What practical and fun things have you done since your arrival in Canada?

Faour explained that they’ve been too busy for any tourist activities such as visiting Parliament Hill or skating on the Rideau Canal.

But they have thrown a lot of snowballs with the kids, and gotten to meet a lot of new friends. On the practical side, Abed shovelled his driveway for the first time. He got a chuckle from it, and hoped to shovel others’ too.

2.) Tell us about the journey you and your family have undergone to arrive in Arnprior.

The family didn’t exactly flee back in 2011. It was always their plan to leave, but to leave on their terms and with dignity and some comfort. They were working class people with Abed taking wedding photos, graduation and more at a photo shop in the city. When the time did come, they had a few dollars to buy them some options in Beirut, Lebanon.

They lived in a lower class Syrian neighbourhood in the capital city. Refugees prefer to stay together and are often forced together. Karima and her family were never separated and never forced to stay in tent camps. There was a little bit of work here and there, so they got by.

It was before the mass exodus that has filled western television screens with cramped boats and makeshift accommodations. Still, after five years in Lebanon, they were ready to settle in a country permanently. Karima signed the UN document asking to resettle. When the got news it would be Canada, friends and others said the family won the lottery.

Seize the opportunity. The place is cold but the people warm. You will feel like a human being again.

They flew in to Montreal last month.

“A dream,” Abed said in English, smiling broadly.

3.) What do you miss most about Syria?

Aleppo was a cosmopolitan city of two million now reduced to rubble. Literally every building and open

fears the conversation with a neighbour could find its way back to the authorities. Everyone is afraid to have different ideas, hence the fear to even talk.

Where once they had only government officials and soldiers to fear, now they are nervous around one another – even family members.

Absurd situations breed extreme ideas and twisted mentalities.

“He could answer your question in many different ways, but it all comes down to the same thing,” Faour said. “If there will be peace, it will take generations.”

There is no hope for the country and those left behind, only for the future and upcoming generations.

Faour talked about his journey from Lebanon when civil war broke out in the mid 1970s. He goes back now and is dumbfounded by the transformation. He didn’t live through the stages of rehabilitation.

He suspects it will be the same for this family.

5.) Have you found similarities between our two countries, either in the people or things?

Canadians are like Syrians were before violence erupted. They will help with no strings attached, just because it makes them feel better too. People come up to

space shows the effects of numerous bombings. Syrians are a gregarious group. They enjoy eating and drinking together, sharing gossip and planning futures together.

The streets were full of such people. Abed, also a talkative person, described beautiful sunny days strolling through parks. As he talked, his hands would make grand circular gestures. He would touch his nose when explaining how the smell of a city is unique to that one place; it can never be replicated.

Then his hands dropped.

His shoulders slouched. His eyes were covered to mask tears. He was sobbing.

Karima, a dignified and stoic woman now breastfeeding her toddler, said one word. She repeated it.

“They miss family,” Faour said. “His mother. He hasn’t seen his mother in five years.

Because it’s not safe. So they miss their extended family.”

A tear escaped Karima, and many more were flowing from Elaine’s.

4.) What needs to happen in Syria and internationally to restore peace in your homeland?

Abed said it is hard to see any solutions at this point.

The hatred and fear between groups and even on the individual level is too thick. It seems like every dialog ends in an argument. Everyone

talk out of the blue, for no reason other than to make the association.

Wealth distribution is about the same. Aleppo had its millionaires in big homes, and working class people in their neighbourhoods, and everyone in between.

Abed said both societies have extremists, and the media focuses on those people to the point that the vast majority are forgotten. Western media shows unending images of people screaming and firing guns in the streets.

Middle East media talks of westerners having no control over their children, of decadence and hedonism.

As an example, Abed said the school wants his daughter to attend a swim.

He is OK with it because he doesn’t want her to feel left out. He is not in favour of

her wearing a bikini while there, but as it turns out – plenty of other parents don’t let their girls wear bikinis.

So modesty and parental authority does exist in the west, regardless of the propaganda.

And the same is true in Syria. Most people never wanted the killing. They just wanted to provide a life for their children.

6.) Canada is a society with a scientific view of the universe. We don’t posit a God above the clouds or trade individual effort with the oftused Muslim term “God willing.” Which things will you have to give up and take on to adapt to life in Canada?

Abed has no interest in pushing his beliefs on others.

Nor is he concerned the children will lose their religion.

He does, however, maintain

that parents are the first influence on their children.

They will be raised knowing their language and religion, the house rules and family values. They will respect others.

He also is grateful for the opportunity to learn about two different societies and languages. He will always appreciate how good life is in Canada.

7.) What hopes and dreams do you have for your children?

Karima had a one-sentence response. If they have it in them, to obtain their dream.

8.) What do you want to get across in this interview?

Faour said they travelled thousands of kilometres to reach this spot. They want to thank all those who helped, and they hope one day soon to give back.

Report from Parliament As we observe the Season of Lent, culminating in Easter Sunday, I was moved to recognize, in a statement to the House of Commons, the genocide directed against Christians in the Middle East.

The United Nations (UN) defines genocide as wilful acts intended to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. This describes the campaign by the Islamic State of the Levant, ISIL, in the Middle East, to particularly target Christians. Christians have been crucified, beheaded, raped, enslaved, subjected to forced conversion, or immediate death.

On February 4, the Parliament of the European Union passed a unanimous resolution recognizing the Islamic State’s attacks on Christians for what they are—genocide.

In Canada, the Liberal Prime Minister refuses to join the rest of the civilized world in recognizing the ISIS campaign against Christians as genocide. The Prime Minister does not think Christians are the right kind of refugee. A member of the Prime Minister’s family is the prominent lobbyist for a suspected sleeper agent for al-Qaida plotting to commit extremism or espionage, from being deported.

The Liberal party is revoking the law that allows Canadian authorities to deport convicted terrorists with dual citizenship to their country of origin after they finish their Canadian prison sentence.

In the case of Christians, they are not to be found in the U.N. refugee camps. Christians have been attacked and targeted by Islamic Extremists, and driven from them. They go without any shelter provided by UNHCR, International Rescue Committee and other international NGOs, or any education for their children. The so-called Islamic State and other radical groups openly glorify the slaughter of Christians.

It was with moral clarity that our Conservative government chose to help refugees in greatest need.This moral clarity has been abandoned in Ottawa.

The victims of genocide are crying out for our help. In addition to persecuted Christians and other religious minorities, millions of refugees languish in UN refugee camps in places like Africa.

Politics in Ottawa have taken a radical shift to the left. The longer this government is in office, the more desperate will be the cries from the most needy.

A national broadcaster’s new podcast debuts with a fresh look at the disappearance of an Arnprior boy back in the 1970s.

Someone Knows Something is a truecrime series examining unsolved cases of missing or murdered individuals. Its inaugural program will focus on Adrien McNaughton, the five-year-old boy who disappeared while on a fishing trip in 1972.

When the boy disappeared without a trace from Holmes Lake, near Calabogie, thousands of searchers, including soldiers from Garrison Petawawa, scoured the area to no avail.

The hope is that it will generate new leads in cold cases.

“We can put out evidence and see what we get back,” Ridgen said.

“Social media helps speed up everything immensely.”

Already the series has interviewed a person on scene that day who has never been interviewed before.

Ridgen said the podcast is getting a lot of reaction and was the top podcast in Canada last week.

“It’s going very well,” he said.

An Arnprior pharmacist says he will fight allegations he sexually abused a patient at a hearing in September.

He told the ChronicleGuide that the allegations are a “personal vendetta.”

James Ying, co-owner of the Remedy’s Rx (Excellent Care Pharmacy) at the Arnprior Shopping Centre, is accused of having: • sexually abused a patient; • failed to maintain a standard of practice of the profession; • abused a patient, verbally or physically; • engaged in conduct or

performed an act relevant to the practice of pharmacy that, having regard to all the circumstances, would reasonably be regarded by members of the profession as disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional.

The discipline committee of the Ontario College of Pharmacists will deal with the matter from Sept. 6 to 9 in Toronto.

According to a public document on the college’s website, Ying is alleged to have committed professional misconduct while employed as a pharmacist at Walmart Pharmacy in Kanata and/or at Victoria Pharmacy in Ottawa.

“It is alleged that … you

failed to maintain the professional boundaries of the pharmacist-patient relationship when you developed a non-professional, personal relationship with the patient or former patient, in or about January 2013 to June 2013, and continued to pursue that relationship thereafter, until in or about June 2014, and/or you engaged in sexual abuse of the patient, on one or more occasions, in or about January 2013 to June 2013,” reads the document.

The patient’s name does not appear.

Making the best of winter Okay, enough, already. Spring arrives Sunday and it’s about time.

It’s been a crazy winter, weatherwise. For a change, wouldn’t it nice to have a good, oldfashioned winter with snow and cold temperatures on a consistent basis, instead of weather all over the map.

Nowadays, we never know what to expect.

First, it appeared winter would never arrive. Then it showed up in force. But not just with normal cold temperatures and a decent amount of snow.

Oh no. There was an irritating mix of sleet and freezing rain mixed in with icy temperatures (remember the Family Day weekend), then close to record dumps of snow.

We have no snow days for most of the winter, then four snow days in less than a week, and just before March break. It’s not the best time to have an unexpected break from school.

There was no snowmobiling for most of the early winter, and almost no skiing for weeks, then, boom, plenty of snow.

Calabogie Peaks says the white stuff that fell (and fell and fell) a couple of weeks ago gave the ski hill the best snow conditions it’s had in years.

The great skiing conditions even attracted former prime minister Jean Chretien to the hill.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Ottawa River, U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman and members of his staff enjoyed another

To the Editor: Commenting on Terry Cunningham’s piece on ‘Bellamy Road maintenance lacking’ (Chronicle-Guide, March 10).

I have been wanting to call/write in for years on this issue.

I’ve been driving the Bellamy Road from Peneshulla Road to White Lake village for over 20 years.

From Peneshulla to Bayview Road it is always well-cleared. However, there is, and has been for years, a distinct line at the Bayview Road, and from that point on it is very rarely even plowed.

winter pursuit in the Ottawa Valley. From all accounts, they had a great time dog sledding in the Bristol area.

And on Calabogie Lake, the darling of the fishing community, author and angler Ashley Rae, caused excitement when she accompanied students from St. Joseph’s school in the village for an ice fishing adventure.

It goes to show that despite all the complaining about the weather for the last couple of months, this area’s winters can provide major benefits.

People take notice when celebrities show up to enjoy the many delights winter in this area brings.

The next winter sport to attract a celebrity to the area is the most popular one of all: hockey.

The celebrity is not a person, but a thing.

The Stanley Cup is coming to the Valley for a full day of festivities on April 5. Lord Stanley’s visit to Renfrew should go a long way in adding legitimacy to the community’s claim to be the birthplace of the NHA/NHL. It’s by embracing winter sports such as hockey, skiing and even dog sledding that this area can truly become a four-season tourist destination.

So hats off to the Peaks, Denis Rozon and his sled dogs, St. Joseph’s school and the NHA/NHL committee for making it attractive for celebrities to visit here.

When they come, many others are sure to follow. And we all will benefit.

without plowing, resulting in treacherous driving conditions.

If it is the soft slushy variety as we had most recently, it inevitably freezes into cement-like ruts and ridges that make driving a hazard, not to mention very unpleasant and hard on the vehicles.

It is a very frustrating situation, obviously well-known to all who travel the road. Certainly we could call in every time we have a snow-fall, but who has the time?

Clearly, Lanark has no difficulty in maintaining their section of the road promptly after each snowfall.

I cannot comprehend why McNab-Braeside/

Renfrew County simply ignores theirs. Can this small section of road simply be added into the normal snow-clearing operations map rather than being ignored?

Ratepayers living from Bayview to White Lake are not lesser citizens, though they may be few, and the road is well-travelled by many coming from Lanark Highlands as well.

It is long past time for some attention to this matter. It reflects very badly on the township.

Most of the waterfowl are heading north to their breeding grounds after spending the winter along southern coasts or in the Central Plains. However, because northern ponds and lakes are still locked in ice, these travellers will remain in our area for several weeks, and while their numbers build (a phenomenon known as “staging”), the migrating waterfowl are food for a number of animals.

Recently I saw two very different animals trying to attain a waterfowl meal.

The first was a Bald Eagle. Now, eagles are opportunists when it comes to dining. Many eat fish, which they typically capture by swooping low over water and snatching with their massive talons.

Ospreys, which will soon return to our area, capture fish by diving in feet first. Eagles also employ that technique, especially when capturing diving ducks.

The eagle I saw was four years old. It looked very much like a full adult (the distinctive white head, white tail, and dark brown body take five years to attain) except it bore a dusky band near the tip of

At first I thought it was trying to capture fish, for, after hovering over the water, it would plunge in feet first. Twice it went completely under except for the tips of its massive wings.

Then I saw the object of its intent. Just after the eagle emerged from its second dive, a male Common Goldeneye surfaced a few metres away.

The duck exploded into flight, and the eagle quickly gave chase.

But it was no contest. With its pointed wings the goldeneye shot into overdrive, soon leaving its pursuer far behind.

A few days ago I visited Wolfe Island with the hopes of finding a Gyrfalcon, the largest and most northern falcon in the world. Gyrfalcons occasionally come south to our area and when they do, ducks are often on their menu. In fact, just before writing this column I received a call from my friend Jon Ruddy excitedly informing me that he had just seen a Gyrfalcon (his first ever!) chasing Mallards near Barrhaven.

I didn’t find a Gyrfalcon, but I did see something equally exciting.

As I passed by a field full of geese I noticed a medium-sized,

dark brown mammal sitting in the middle of it. Expecting to see a Groundhog, I raised my binoculars.

To my surprise I saw a Fisher!

Years ago I watched a Coyote stalking Canada Geese in a field near Renfrew, but I’ve never heard of a Fisher hunting geese.

Now, it certainly is possible that the Fisher wasn’t hunting geese but was merely travelling across the field to reach another woodlot.

And when it encountered the geese, it simply had to stop to take a closer gander!

Killed horse mistaken for black bear

Car thieves strike, Shooter fined $2,000, pays owner $7,000 for loss of ‘beloved pet’ ‘lock your vehicles’ Staff

A area man charged in the shooting of a horse in the Springtown area last fall has been fined $2,000 and has paid the animal’s owner $7,000.

Malcolm Pierce was charged after OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) investigated when the horse went missing Nov. 1 and was found shot dead and partially hidden more than a month later.

Pierce admitted he shot the horse after mistaking it for a black bear. The “beloved pet,” a sorrel gelding named Peppys Charge it Up (‘Mac’), was being boarded at the Springtown property.

Pierce pleaded guilty in Pembroke court Feb. 22 and was fined $1,000 for careless hunting and $1,000 for hunting at night.

He has also been suspended from hunting for two years and must complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course prior to obtaining a hunting licence in the future.

Court heard that on the night of Oct. 31, Pierce was hunting between Calabogie and Burnstown later than the allowed time of half-an-hour after sunset. He noticed what he believed was a black bear approaching him and shot the animal.

On inspecting the animal, he determined that it was, in fact, a horse from a

The owner searched for ‘Mac’ for six weeks, including running a newspaper advertisement asking for information about the missing horse, before finally discovering the partially concealed body on Dec. 11 The owner contacted the MNRF and conservation officers from the Pembroke office attended to investigate. They determined that Pierce had illegally killed the

horse. In addition to the fines, Pierce paid $7,000 in restitution to the owner of the horse, prior to the hearing in court.

The case was heard by Justice of the Peace Nancy Mitchell.

Thieves strike at car wash A thief or thieves damaged coin operated dispensing machines at the Four Seasons Car Wash on Madawaska Boulevard in Arnprior. They stole the contents, which included car cleaning clothes and air fresheners valued at about $100.

They were unsuccessful in stealing money from the cash box in the machine. They also attempted to gain access to an office but were only able to damage the door handle and could not get inside. The theft happened between March 6 and 10. OPP Const. Dallas MacLeod is investigating.

OPP report the building that houses the canteen at the White Lake Community Centre has been broken into, with a window forced open and pop stolen. The break-in was discovered on March 4 at 9 p.m.

OPP report a mailbox on Burnstown Road was damaged overnight on Feb. 29.

In all, Renfrew and Arnprior OPP officers investigated almost 400 calls for service in the last week of February and first week of March, including 13 domestic disputes. One man was charged with three counts of assault and one count of uttering threats.

A total of 18 thefts from cars in Arnprior in the past three months has prompted OPP to issue another appeal for owners to lock their vehicles.

“Take heed – thieves are always on the lookout for valuables left behind in unlocked vehicles,” warn police. While generally a crime officers see frequently in warmer weather, it’s been happening regularly in the winter too, they note.

The thefts from unlocked vehicles are usually happening in the overnight hours. Stolen items include loose change, wallets, cell phones, GPS units and sunglasses.

“Protect your property,” urge police. “If you don’t want to replace it, don’t leave it unattended. Remove or secure valuables out of sight. Get in the habit of locking your vehicle every time you walk away from it.

“Remember lock it or lose it.”

Group petitions for more speed signs in township Derek Dunn

A group of homeowners in McNab-Braeside has petitioned township council to slow traffic in their neighbourhood.

Cameron Woods includes Kippen Road (off White Lake Road), Lorlei and Deerfield drives (along the Madawaska River) and Stewartville Road. About eight residents attended the March 1 council meeting to present a 100-signiture petition asking for something to be done about fast-driving vehicles in the area.

Susan Gillan said OPP agree that speeding is a problem in that area, south of the Stewartville dam.

“The content of each report is to be shared with the municipality for which it was generated only and not be publicly shared with any other municipality or agency,” Slight wrote.

The secrecy raised a concern for Coun. Scott Brum. “(Service hours) are dramatically down,” Brum said. “This should be public knowledge. That kind of disturbs me a little bit.”

Mayor Tom Peckett, who like others on council ran a campaign based in large part on openness and transparency, was unequivocal.

“Anything that comes like that is public knowledge,” he said. Reports and other correspondence submitted to a township are to be made available to council and, therefore,

the public.

OPP service and billing is a touchy issue with the township and other small municipalities in Ontario. A new billing system was introduced that makes for more predictable and accurate costs for larger municipalities such as Arnprior. Savings to taxpayers in those towns is also considerable.

However, billings have jumped sharply for townships. McNabBraeside faces significant tax hikes largely to cover policing.

Coun. Heather Lang noted the number of calls is going down but billing is on the rise.

“I find the whole formula inequitable,” Lang said.

Peckett said he and other small municipal leaders are working on a resolution, but not to expect it anytime soon.

“I agree,” Peckett said. “All I can say is it’s a work in progress. It is going to take time.”

A passenger in the vehicle was found to be breaching two conditions of his probation order.

The Goldbar lost its luster earlier this month when the popular owner died unexpectedly at her home.

Marlene Hube was the longtime owner of the jewelry store, located at the corner of Elgin and John streets. Flowers were left near the door not long after she passed away on March 2.

Married to Jack Hube for almost 60 years, Marlene was the mother of Mark, Scott and Pam, all of who still live in the area.

Marlene was predeceased by an infant daughter Kelly. She was the much loved grandmother of Melissa, Joshua, Jessica, Natasha, Rachael, Emily, Mary, Brian, Darren and Jason.

She worked at the store most days, but found time for family on Sundays and holidays.

Just the mention of family, as described by Jason Marshall in a story for Arnprior and McNab-Braeside Seniors at Home, would cause her face to light up and a broad smile emerge.

The story described her daily commute from a lovely spot in Castleford, overlooking the Ottawa River, to the shop she said had the nicest location in all of the downtown core.

Marlene bought the store from Doreen Moore in 1992, moving from behind the CIBC bank to its current location a few years ago. She was proud to say she would select every item for sale, and had something in every price point, from expensive diamond rings to a Toronto Maple Leafs lamp.

She described herself as an upbeat person still up for the daily grind in her late ‘70s.

“I’m a hands-on owner and that’s the best thing you can do in a business like this,” she told Marshall.

“People ask me why I don’t retire. Well, I’m not ready to retire. I’m still enjoying what

Former prime minister skis the Peaks Calabogie Peaks receives accessibility funding Staff

Calabogie Peaks had a special visitor March 4.

One-time Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien took to the slopes with former Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP Hec Clouthier. After a stint as MP, Clouthier served as an advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office during Chrétien’s last term.

Liz Murphy, the director of marketing at the Peaks confirms Chrétien skis in Calabogie once or twice a year.

“He’s a great skier,” said Murphy. “He adds a friendly environment because people love to chat with him and he’s so warm and personal.”

The 82-year-old Chretien enjoyed a day of skiing and posed for photographs with other skiers. A Facebook photograph posted by Clouthier’s son Geoff and shared by the Peaks’ Face-

book page was accompanied by: “Unbelievable day on a fantastic hill with good chum James Scott, my dad Hector Clouthier and his good chum former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.”

Chretien is known for his active lifestyle, so most weren’t surprised by his skiing exploits.

Last year at 81 he was photographed water-skiing.

A few years ago he went Whitewater rafting at Wilderness Tours and has frequently been photographed snowboarding, bicycling, golfing, tossing a softball, dribbling a basketball, vaulting over walls and racing up stairs.

Calabogie Peaks, already wellknown for catering to disabled skiers, is going to become even more accessible.

The resort has been awarded $44,200 in federal funding to go towards paving handicapped parking spaces and a pathway to enable better acccessibility for the mobility challenged to activities and buildings at Calabogie Peaks.

“Paul and Liz Murphy have made Calabogie Peaks a leader in accessibility advocacy and working to advance the lives of Canadians living with disabilities,” said Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP Cheryl Gallant during a recent visit to announce the Enabling Accessibility Fund (EFA) grant.

“These renovations will be vital to the services offered at Calabogie Peaks for Canadians living with disabilities, including Calabogie Adaptive Snowsports Centre of Excellence and the headquarters of the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing (CADS),” she added.

Many disabled Canadians partici-

pate in the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) Sunday Ski Program at the Peaks. The centre is also home to a five-day winter sports clinic for injured military veterans and Community Living days for disabled adults in Renfrew County.

Special features include two wheelchair ramps, a large washroom equipped with adult change facilities and a 300-square foot basement storage space for skis, sit skis and other specialized adaptive equipment.

Gallant pointed out the EAF was established in 2008 by the Conservative Government to help fund small projects in communities across Canada to improve physical accessibility for persons with disabilities. Between 2008 and 2010 the program provided funding to hundreds of accessibility projects across Canada.

Arnprior peewee teams meet in league championship Staff

There was no doubt going into the championship round of peewee house playoffs that an Arnprior team would take the cup.

Arnprior peewee 1, called River Kings, finished the regular season in first place, an impressive feat given the 18team league includes powerhouse towns like Petawawa and Fort Coulonge, Que. Arnprior peewee 2, called the Anacondas, finished well too, securing third place.

So the minute the playoff season began, players and parents alike on both teams, were speculating on the possibility.

Could they meet in the championship round?

It happened.

The River Kings beat Fort Coulonge in round one of the playoffs in two games (4-1 and 4-0). That gave them a bye for round two.

That final game, held March 10, proved a special night for one River Kings player. Not only did Joel Neville win the house championship, but he won the Packers rep title too.

Neville struggled to get out of his uniform in Arnprior after the first win. His mother barely got the affiliate player to Cobden for game two of the championship round. That team also clinched the title that night.

Neville won two championships in one evening.

It comes as little surprise to the young athlete, who has also won basketball and volleyball championships at McNab school this year.

Valley players to gather for Tim Hortons hockey jamboree Young Arnprior hockey players will be among 300 taking part in the 16th annual Ottawa Valley Timbits Hockey Jamboree this Saturday, March 19.

ADHS skiers, snowboarders excel on the slopes The Arnprior District High School Ski and Snowboard Team has just completed another “fantastic” season, winning 44 medals and having several athletes moving on to the Eastern Ontario (EOSSAA) and 10 qualifying for the provincial (OFSAA) championships.

At the county meet Feb. 6 at Calabogie Peaks, hardware was awarded to many Arnprior athletes. The Level 1 Girls team (Kaileigh Wright, Katie Carry, Marley Blok, Kianna Backs) placed second overall at the county championships behind Valour and again placed second behind the eventual OFSAA gold medal winning team Lasalle from Kingston.

The Level 1 Boys team (Nic Edge, Spencer King, Devon Dean, Jack Farmer, Travis Wilson) placed first overall in the county meet and then after a few critical mistakes in the slalom race, won a silver medal at EOSSAA behind Kingston VCI. Individually, the skiers also had success. Isaac Murray place fifth overall the county Level 1 boys competition.

Sean Swayze, ADHS’ only Level 2 ski racer, placed second as individual at the county championship.

Nic Edge was crowned the Level 1 boy champion and at EOSSAA was ADHS representative to OFSAA as an individual boy. At OFSAA, Edge competed in four races and placed 42nd in the slalom division and 44th overall in the giant slalom division out of 93 Level 1 racers.

On the snowboard side of things, the ADHS Team ‘Red’ (Kaitlynn Edge, Margaret MacKenzie, Callie Mosseau, Miranda Robinson, and Jordyn Gibeault) had a fantastic year. After multiple falls at the county meet and earning a bronze medal, the team rebounded at EOSSAA to become the EOSSAA gold medallists.

At OFSAA, the team placed fifth out of 20 Level 1 Girls teams.

Long-time ADHS coach honoured Continued from Page 25

The ADHS Girls Team ‘White’ (Brye Enright, Grace Philp, Zoe Van Sickle, Trinity Kaerbye) also had a great rookie season. After placing second and beating the veteran team Red at counties, they won the bronze medal sending them to OFSAA for the first time. After two races, the team ended up a respectable 12th out of 20 teams in the standings.

Individually, boys snowboarders Connor Ogilvie, Bailey Schlievert, and Tyler Burnette had great races at counties and EOSSAA but fell short of qualifying to OFSAA. Kaitlynn Edge won a bronze medal at both the county and EOSSAA championships, and placed a career high 16th at OFSAA. Rookie Brye Enright won a silver medal at the county championships while fellow rookie Miranda Robinson placed 17th overall at OFSAA out of 115 racers.

The OFSAA snowboard competition added a new twist this year with the addition of team snowboard-

Renfrew County champion skier Nic Edge of ADHS. cross race. The format, different from the Olympics, has a team of four working cooperatively together to get down a course that includes jumps, berms and rollers.

At the inaugural race this year, one of the two EOSSAA All-Star girls team that

included three ADHS girls racers (Grace Philp, Miranda Robinson, and Brye Enright) placed second overall.

It was a fantastic result for girls with limited exposure to the new sport.

The teams travelled to Collingwood for OFSAA at the Blue Mountain Resort Feb. 28 to March 4. Retiring ADHS coach Karen Dodds was presented with an OFSAA leadership award for her long-term involvement in the sport.

The team and its co-coach Krista Petrie-Wallace thank her for her 20 years of ski and snowboard coaching at ADHS. Dodds, who has organized numerous ski and snowboard meets over her coaching career, retired from ADHS in January, so this will be her final season as a coach.

“Congratulations to all racers and Karen on a great season.”

The team also thanked coaches Petrie-Wallace, Dave King and Kate McKenna their contributions to the success of the team.

Early Years Centre has busy spring ahead with Easter party on March 26 Karina Dewar Ontario Early Years

Hop into Spring at the Easter Eggstravaganza.

The Arnprior Family Preschool Resource Centre-Ontario Early Years (OEY) is hosting its annual Easter party on Saturday, March 26 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the

centre at 16 Edward St. South Suite 130 (Kenwood Building).

The morning will include games, cookie decorating, a craft and an eggstra-special scavenger hunt.

“It’s a fun filled morning for the entire family,” said Julie Burns, program director at the OEY. “The Eggstravaganza was very

successful last year and we are encouraging everyone to come check it out.”

The event is designed for children up to eight years old and costs $10 per family.

The Ultimate Multi-Vendor Garage Sale is set for Saturday, April 2 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Kenwood Corporate Centre.

businesses and other vendors are also welcome.”

Seniors at Home

Now underway is the 2015 Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home (ABMSHP) Volunteer Income Tax Program available only to individuals with low to modest income.

You must have a simple tax situation, i.e. no self-employment or business income or expenses, no capital gains or losses, no bankruptcy files.

The office, located at Towne Centre Unit A1 – 106 McGonigal St. West, Arnprior, is open to accept 2015 Income Tax forms from now until May 2.

The service is offered only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Note - these are the only days and times volunteers are available to accept returns.

ABMSH does not accept nor deliver any income tax forms on any Tuesday or Thursday, nor will they be taking any or delivering any income tax on the slotted days outside of the hours as stated above.

ABMSH offers the Income Tax Program free, but as it is a non-profit charitable organization, the Income Tax Program is considered an annual fundraiser for the agency, which makes a donation at the completion of your income tax most appreciated.

In return for your donation, no matter the

amount, you will be issued an official donation receipt for income tax purposes (2016).

Ontario Parks suggests summer campers book now Ontario Parks is suggesting campers take advantage of its five month booking window and book their summer camping vacations now.

Over 12,000 park campsites were booked by the end of January. Numbers continue to rise steadily with over 35,000 reservations processed at the time of this update. According to park of-

ficials, campgrounds at popular provincial parks like Sandbanks, Killbear and Pinery fill up quickly for summer holiday weekends.

Day camp tips for parents School is barely out before it’s time to start the kids at day camp. All summer long, they will be able to do a variety of activities, go on group outings, and make lots of new friends. that your children will feel a little nervous about going to camp, especially if it’s their first time. How to choose a summer camp

Summer is a great time for kids. They need to get away from the everyday stress of school as much as adults need to get away from their full time jobs.

What better way to help kids relax and enjoy their time off than to send them to summer camp? (By the way, this gives parents a nice break too.)

Before you make a camp decision for your child, there are a lot of factors to consider.

You will want to do your homework before you drop your child off for the day to be cared for by people you hardly know.

It’s not easy. There are so many camps to consider and they come in all shapes and sizes.

There are day camps, overnight camps, golf camps, horseback riding camps and science camps to name a few.

Here are some general considerations: YOUR CHILD›S INTERESTS

What does your child like to do? Children know what they like and don’t like. Ask them for their input. If your child is active and loves to play sports, a sports camp is probably right for him or her. If your child is creative, then choose a camp that offers arts and crafts. Camp choices are as varied as children themselves. Choose a camp with the specific focus geared toward your child.

DAY CAMP VERSUS OVERNIGHT CAMP

Depending on the age, maturity and independence of your child, he or she may or may not be ready for an overnight camp. Some overnight camps accept children as young as six years old.

Only you can decide when the time is right.

CONVENIENT LOCATION

Location is important because you will have to drop off and pick up your child every day. You’ll want to consider your drive time and also

keep in mind the hours of the camp.

COST

Of course, the cost is something to consider. The cost of camp should reflect the service provided. When comparing camps by price make sure that you are comparing apples to apples. Some camps include lunches, while others include snacks, t-shirts, hats, extended hours and off site field trips. Price alone, can be misleading.

I’ve always believed, “You get what you pay for”.

RESEARCH

With pencil in hand, contact the camps you are considering and ask some specific questions. Not all camps are created equal, so ask the same questions to each camp director and compare their answers. You need to feel comfortable with their answers before you make your choice. This is not an exhaustive list, but here are a few questions to get you started: 1. Who do you hire as counsellors? Are they experienced? How old are they?

Are they certified in CPR and First Aid? Have they undergone a criminal record check?

2. What are your hours for the camp program? for pre and post camp care? Is there an additional cost for extended hours?

3. What is the ratio of campers to counselors? Ratios of 8:1 are common. A maximum of 10:1 is probably the maximum ratio you would want.

4. Are snacks or a lunch provided? Is the lunch program optional or mandatory?

5. What do you do on rainy days? Are your facilities airconditioned?

6. Do the children swim every day? What are your rules for supervision at the pool? Is there a wading pool for young campers?

7. Do you offer any discounts?

8. Can you provide a list of references or testimonials?

Word of mouth is the best reference. Ask around and find out where other parents are sending their children.

9. How are different age groups divided?

10. What if my child doesn›t like the camp? Do you offer a guarantee? What is your cancellation policy?

11. Where can I find more information about your camp? Do you have a website? Can I register online?

Can I pay by credit card?

The best way to determine if a particular camp is right for you is to ask a lot of questions. Camp directors are used to answering questions about every detail of camp.

If you don’t get the answers you are looking for, keep searching. You need to feel good about your decision. After all, you want your child to have an awesome camp experience that will forge memories to last a lifetime.

Cousins brought with them a special gift to Northcote They didn’t need much of an excuse for Aunt Helen and Uncle Herby to ship off my cousins Ronny and Terry to Northcote from Montreal.

But rarely did they come in the dead of winter like they did that year. Uncle Herby said measles were raging in the city, and the only way to avoid the boys getting sick from them was to ship them off to Northcote.

And so they arrived, and Aunt Helen stayed only long enough to unpack their suitcases and make a trip to Briscoe’s General Store for treats, and then she was back on the train to Montreal.

Beds were shifted. And it always amazed me how Mother would make a few changes and any number of relatives could be bedded down. If that meant three to a bed, so be it.

Ronny was old enough to go off with us to the Northcote School, but Terry would spend the day at home with

Mother. No permission was needed from our teacher Miss Crosby. All Mother had to do was pack an extra sandwich and cookie in a brown paper bag, and send Ronny off.

Young Terry was considered delicate, whatever that meant. But it gave him extra privileges, which didn’t sit well with his older and rambunctious brother Ronny.

Ronny said it was all an act, and Terry could turn a ‘ sick spell’ off and on like a light switch.

Ronny loved going to the Northcote School, and Terry was quite happy at home with Mother, where

he had the run of the house, and especially liked helping Mother in the kitchen, doing little jobs like wiping the windowsills. I vowed we had the cleanest windowsills in all of Renfrew County, as all I had to do was tell Mother I was bored and there was nothing to do, and she would tell me to either get a cloth and wipe the windowsills, or get the ball of string and knit a dishcloth.

I hated both chores with a passion.

After they had been with us about two days, and after we had redded up the kitchen after supper, the table was cleared for the usual board

games we played until it was time to go to bed. Ronny told Terry he couldn’t play Parcheesi because he couldn’t read and he couldn’t count.

Terry started to cry and told Mother he didn’t feel well. Needless to say, Ronny said it was just an act, and Terry did that all the time when things didn’t go his way.

Mother took Terry on her lap, and let him look through her scrap books, but nothing seemed to calm him down, and he kept asking “Aunty, itchy me,” which was his way of asking to have his back scratched, which he loved.

Mother raised up his pajama top, and let out a yelp that I was sure they could be heard on the next farm.

“Dear Mary and Joseph ... it’s the measles. He’s covered with them!”

We all scrambled from our place at the table to have a look at Terry’s spots. They

were there alright. There was hardly a square inch that was spared.

Mother immediately phoned Mrs. Beam who everyone in Northcote called before getting old Doctor Murphy to come all the way out from Renfrew. Even over the phone, Mrs. Beam was able to confirm what Mother already expected: Terry had the measles and a good dose of them too!

It took another day for the spots to show on Ronny, and he wasn’t at all pleased, and to say Father was overjoyed was a gross exaggeration. “Come all the way from Montreal and bringing the measles with them. A fine kettle of fish.”

And then, all in perfect order, each one of us got the red spots, one after another. The last one to come down with them was my sister Audrey. She turned out to be the sickest, and was no help to Mother at all, who

was trying her best to keep seven children from killing each other, as we fought for her attention.

Well, it didn’t take long to hear that except for Fat Cora and Two Mile Herman, everyone at the Northcote School was felled with the measles. Miss Crosby refused to close the school, and my sister Audrey said we should send Ronny and Terry packing back to Montreal, spots and all.

Of course, that didn’t happen, but for a long time after, that winter was referred to “the time those Lapointe kids brought the measles from Montreal, and infected the entire Northcote community.”

Helen Scheels Since Mom’s (Grandma’s) passing on February 22, we have heard many comments over and over again: “she was a gracious lady”, “she was the most caring and compassionate person I knew”, ”she was a good-natured soul who was proud of her family”, and “she was my mentor who took me under her wing”.

We take comfort in knowing that she touched so many lives in a positive way and the manner in which she did so, will be her legacy now.

To the physicians, nurses and staff at the Arnprior Hospital, we want to express our sincerest “thank you” for being a colleague to Mom over the years and for caring for her as a patient especially during her last month. We also appreciate the support you gave each of us as we sat by her bedside.

To the hospital administration, who approved our special request to make a short funeral procession past her beloved hospital – thank you. To the various colleagues and staff who stood in the cold that morning to pay tribute to Mom – thank you. We were deeply touched by your presence.

To the hand bell choir who made Mom’s funeral service a one-of-a-kind tribute – thank you. Not only did you make last-minute sacrifices to perform but you also played Mom’s (Grandma’s) favourite piece of music. How thoughtful.

To all of you who are not listed here by name or by function or by profession, we can assure you that we know who you are. It is only due to space constraints that you are not being individually acknowledged in this announcement. We know how you touched Mom’s (Grandma’s) life over the years.

We know what you have done for our family as a whole – especially most recently with your cards, condolences, floral arrangements, donations and words of encouragement. We are forever grateful to each of you.

Mom often said “Life makes changes in all of us”. Our lives were forever changed on February 22nd, but with all of your love and support, our “new” life without Mom has begun its journey.

Ronald Gerald June 20, 1962-March 6, 2016 Canadian Armed Forces - Retired Passed away peacefully in the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital in the arms of his loving wife and family by his side, Sunday evening, March 6, 2016. Ron Delwo of Arnprior at the age of 53 years. Beloved husband and best friend of Mary Anne Delwo (nee Clark) and devoted and loving stepfather of Jeffrey Horricks of North Gower and Todd Horricks (Rose) of Stittsville.

Cherished grandfather of Amberlynn and Aaron Horricks. Son of Gerald Delwo (Linda) of Sudbury. Brother of Rick Delwo of Waterloo, Debbie Carey (Dave) of Nova Scotia and Terri Lynn of Sudbury. Ron will also be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Ron was predeceased by his mother Patricia Delwo (nee Horne), mother and father-in-law Audrey and Bill Clark and his step-daughter Carrie Dawn Horricks.

Raised in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and looing for a change in scenery and adventure, Ron enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in January, 1982. Upon completion of recruit training, he traveled to Shilo, Manitoba for his Artillery course. His career in the Army would take him to Lahr, Germany and Gagetown, New Brunswick. During his stay in Gagetown, Ron met and married his wife Mary Anne in September 1989. in January 1990 , his remuster to Fire Fighter came through and following training at the Fire Academy, he was posted to Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. What followed next was a posting to HMCS Vancouver in July 1996, DV D :HVW &RDVW ´)DLU 'D\µ VDLORU +LV ÀQDO posting brought him back home to Nova Scotia in March 1999, where he was employed on Brown Platoon until his retirement in June 2002. REMEDIATION OF TENNIS COURTS – GEMMILL PARK CONTRACT No. 16-12 The tennis courts in Gemmill Park, Almonte are experiencing soil erosion at their north end adjacent to a ravine. This erosion is causing the undermining of the low toe wall, asphalt surface and chain link fence. This project consists of the remediation of these issues, including the construction of a new gabion wall, replacement and repair of chain link fencing, electrical relocation, grading, drainage works and paving.
