Respondents • Sent to current members only, 1-Nov to 1-Dec • 413 of 1,148 members participated (36% RR, 4% MoE) • Last membership survey was in 2004; board’s plan is for more regular updates every few years 8

Respondents: Main findings ARNOVA is young and diverse • More than half of all respondents joined ARNOVA five or fewer years ago.

• One in five is a student; two in five are early career.

• One in five is from outside US/Canada.

• Half of members pay their own dues.

Respondents: Main findings Networking is highly valued • Second most frequent reason for joining; most frequent reason for attending annual meeting; most frequent “best thing” they like about ARNOVA. • Most belong to multiple other professional/scholarly associations.

• Members love ARNOVA’s collegiality and sense of community.

• Most would like to hear from ARNOVA at least monthly.

Respondents: Main findings Yet, opportunity for more member engagement • 39% attend annual meeting “occasionally” or “never” • 66% have never volunteered for NVSQ • Half have never: • read/posted to ARNOVA-L listserv, • been to a section/common interest group meeting, • submitted a manuscript to NVSQ • communicated with board members, or • encouraged someone else to join ARNOVA (yet, half say they are likely to recommend ARNOVA to a colleague).

So, how can ARNOVA better engage members?

• Keep our eye on the top four reasons for attending the annual meeting: cost, opportunity to network, opportunity to present research, and content.

• Assist members in making the case to their employers about value of publishing in NVSQ. • Improve membership renewal process and consider multi-year or lifetime dues.

• Improve website functionality and content.

• More active assistance for members looking for volunteer and networking opportunities.

• More frequent member communications (3/4 want monthly or more) • Sponsor more journals serving different niches.

• More networking/social/cultural events.

FY2017 Audit Report • Unqualified audit was completed on-time and with no management letter • ARNOVA reported surplus of $800,000 on $2.1 million of revenues • Largely result of grants for next fiscal years • Revenues up 45% from 2016 (mostly grants) • Expenses down 4% from 2016

FY2018 Financial Results to Date • For the first nine months of year, operating surplus of about $300,000 (slightly under budget) • Royalty income down for the year but grants and membership are over budget • Expenses are 9% over budget, but paid for by grants • Investment portfolio is down about 4% for the year (October volatility) 17

Conference Registration Analysis • Conference registration fees • Registration fees do not cover the full cost of the conference (direct or total) • Sponsors and other donors helping to offset these costs • Financial performance of annual conference has improved over time, but still not a money maker 18
