Analyzing the CCZ2 (retail core) guidelines, existing building usage, government policy support for the education precinct, and Melbourne’s fashion and culinary identity, a fashion institute would replace the existing banks, Telstra, and tertiary education institutions in the building. The Chemist Warehouse and DAISO will be retained in the basement after allocating some space for essential services.

TRANSPARENCY Transparency improves social connections and fosters a sense of openess and adaptability. More transparency ≠ more energy by welcoming natural light, and appropriate heating for Melbourne climate it slashes energy consumption, reducing costs, and our carbon footprint. It benefits users with well-being-boosting spaces filled with light and a connection to nature, creating an enticing and eco-friendly haven.

IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

ILLUSION Achieving transparency through a strategy rooted in Gestalt psychology and analytical cubism, which focuses on simultaneous perception of different spatial locations, functionality and definitions.

BUILDING USERS

Wanderers Design staff Students Machine technicians

Users include 60% students, 20% design staff, and 20% technicians and wanderers. In the proposed stepped spatial design, experienced students will supervise new students.

Waste fabric will be repurposed for fashion and partition walls, while food waste will serve as printing dye, generating revenue from waste.

The removed concrete can be crushed & reused in other construction projects as aggregate The subtractive proposal aim of giving back to the country, regenerating nature and rain-water retention in the basement.

The subtractive proposal yielded 8 faces: 3 introverted and 5 extroverted. The luminous 16m wide central atrium ideally orchestrates a phenomenal activities, voids and vistas, and shepherds the educational journey from inception to completion, within a re-used cube.

A buffer circulation space at the 6 Extroverted faces made the atrium faces as natural light source for the design studios.

The low-fi phenomenal facade generates 1350 MWh energy as well.
