Phoenix: revolutionary barrel rejuvenation Achieving consistent product quality while minimising costs is the aim of any wine company striving to remain competitive. Ground-breaking new technology developed by Diverse Barrel Solutions (patents pending) will help wineries achieve that goal.

barrels ready to be Phoenixed™

Using the Phoenix highly accurate laser-guided cutting technology, can restore old barrels to an almost new condition. The rejuvenation benefits of Phoenix are far superior to traditional processes and have been independently verified by the Australian Wine Research Institute oak analysis service. Analysis shows that Phoenix precision cutting removes wine contaminants to expose clean wood and most of the original oak flavour characteristics. The life of used barrels is significantly extended at a much lower cost compared with buying a replacement.

How it works Precision engineering and ingenuity were required to develop a world leading barrel rejuvenation process. Unlike traditional systems, Phoenix is a quality-driven approach designed to restore the integrity of the barrel. During a normal life-cycle, wine and toasting generally penetrates up to 5mm into the oak. To ensure all this contaminated oak is removed, Phoenix scans each stave separately to build an accurate three-dimensional picture of the inside surface.

computer-controlled Infra red rotating toasters

A high-speed, computercontrolled cutting tool then cuts up to 8 mm off the inside to reveal clean oak. Infra-red toasting is then applied using leading technology that removes the risk of toast variation and blistering. Extending the useable life of a barrel has important environmental benefits. Less oak needs to be harvested which lowers a winery’s carbon footprint. There is also a reduction in waste. Fully mobile service Not only is the Phoenix system ground-breaking, it’s also mobile. Winemakers have the choice of having their barrels Phoenixed™ at Diverse Barrel Solutions’ cooperage in Adelaide or we can come to you. Our self-contained, fullyequipped Phoenix unit can travel to a winery with our own power supply. Strict quality standards We are building our reputation on delivering a quality product and only treat barrels that can be restored to the highest standard. First we insert a camera through the bunghole to inspect the oak and amount of blistering to assess if the barrel is suitable for the Phoenix process. Processing the heads leave them weak and susceptible to leaking, hence we fit new, 24 month country of origin seasoned heads. The barrels are then recrozed so that the newly toasted heads can be fitted below the original position and away from any possible taint.

Laboratory tested The analytical service of the Australian Wine Research Institute compared the oak flavours present in five-year-old untreated barrels with a fully Phoenixed™ barrel.

The results show marked increases in oak characteristics even though the tests were conducted without the added benefit of new heads.

The Phoenix process is so effective that barrels previously containing red wine can be used for white wine fermentation and maturation.
